In April, I visited Costco Optical to purchase glasses for my granddaughter. My husband absolutely…read moreloves Costco, and our family has always had a positive impression of the company. I brought my granddaughter's prescription with me, and the entire experience was wonderful.
My granddaughter fell in love with a beautiful pair of Gucci eyeglasses. My first thought was, "Oh no, Gucci!" However, I was pleasantly surprised by Costco's amazing selection and competitive pricing. The glasses were approximately $300, and we left extremely happy with our purchase.
Unfortunately, this week, one of the temples (arms) of the glasses detached where the metal component connects. I returned to Costco today to ask whether the glasses were covered under any warranty. If they were not, I was completely prepared to pay for the repair or replacement. I simply wanted my granddaughter's glasses fixed.
After patiently waiting my turn, I approached a young female employee with long black hair. She took the glasses without even greeting me or saying hello. Her immediate response was that there was no warranty.
I explained that I understood and was willing to pay because my granddaughter still needed her glasses. But she caught me off.
Rather than offering assistance or explaining our options, the employee began accusing my granddaughter of deliberately breaking the glasses. She insisted that someone had taken the arm and broken it off.
I explained that I was physically present when the glasses simply fell off my granddaughter's face. I witnessed what happened. Why would my granddaughter intentionally break a pair of expensive glasses that she absolutely loved?
Instead of listening, the employee continued making the same accusation. Her attitude became increasingly rude, confrontational, and hostile. Eventually, she told me that her manager would assist me and simply walked away.
I found this behavior completely unacceptable, particularly from a company like Costco, which has built its reputation on customer service and member satisfaction.
I understand that retail employees face challenges and that businesses may be experiencing staffing difficulties. However, those challenges do not excuse disrespectful behavior, unnecessary accusations, or an unwillingness to assist a paying customer.
While waiting a second time for the manager, who was already assisting another family, I was texting on my phone. Suddenly, I heard the same employee shouting from across the optical department not to take her picture, I did not even think she was talking to me because the manager was right in front of me. What should have been a simple request for assistance had now escalated into an unnecessary and embarrassing situation.
In my opinion, the employee appeared more interested in creating a confrontation than in helping resolve a straightforward customer service issue. Her conduct was unprofessional, immature, and completely inconsistent with the level of service I always received from Costco.
Thankfully, there two people who completely turned this experience around: Cliff and Jason, the Optical Department Manager.
Jason was polite, friendly, patient, professional, and genuinely kind. He listened to my concerns, apologized for the way we had been treated, and immediately began looking for a solution. Cliff also apologized and was extremely kind and efficient in descaling the situation.
He located an identical pair of Gucci frames, transferred my granddaughter's existing lenses into the replacement frames, and resolved the entire situation.
My granddaughter went from sad bc the woman was accusing her of breaking her glasses to super happy, Jason has a way with kids, he is a gentle giant, Jason made my daughter feel comfortable and had her smiling after all was done!!!
That is what exceptional customer service looks like!
Thank you, Jason!
Your professionalism, kindness, and willingness to help reminded me why my husband loves Costco so much. You deserve recognition for providing outstanding service and for treating customers with dignity and respect.
I am requesting that Cliff of management review this incident, address the employee's conduct, and formally recognize Jason for his exceptional customer service.
Costco members deserve to be treated respectfully, regardless of whether a product is covered under warranty.
Once again, thank you, Cliff & Jason, for restoring my confidence in Costco Optical and demonstrating what outstanding customer service should be.
