Located on the busy corner of High St. and 5th Ave., this smoke shop is currently off the beaten path due to construction, but provides nothing short of helpful, attentive service. Street parking doesn't exist in this area of the Short North right now, but here in a few months it should be available again. Until then, there's a small parking lot across the street, right next to BrewDog. I made the quick trek across the street, dodging construction workers and makeshift ramps to be greeted immediately. At a quick glance, I noticed they had what I needed but I browsed around for a minute too. They really offer everything you need if you're a smoker of any kind. From large glass bongs to vape pens and everything in between (yes, there's a lot in between), they've got it. Their prices are on par with what I've seen at other similar establishments too. Well not for the vaping but for the newly legal tincture they sell--CBD oil. And this store brings the goods. ( I think they sell CBD vapes too but don't quote me on that.) I heard about CBD long ago and wished to test its reported property to improve sleep. It reportedly helps with anxiety and mental concentration too, two other afflictions I suffered from. I was intrigue with its hypothetical serotonin raising abilities--low serotonin is something I long suspected I suffered from. So once the hemp extract was made legal in Ohio and I heard this local spot specialized in it I made a visit. Let me tell you the clerk--who I assume is the owner-- knows his stuff. He asked about my issues, listened carefully, and gave advice in a warm, confident, and authoritative manner. He suggested a certain mg/ ml tincture, told me when and what amount to take, and how to adjust according to results. I bought a bottle and went to testing it. There are several flavors they can mix in. I asked for black cherry. It tastes like cough medicine. It was awesome service. As for the CBD --it worked! It put me to sleep and I have deeper, higher quality sleep. My concentration is through the roof--I handle situations that had my flustered before with confident aplomb and hip coolness. Anxiety, which I had already lowered with daily meditation, was totally vaporized. Of course, I can not say it was not the placebo effect, and the FHA has not evaluated the claims, but I urge anyone suffering from such affliction to try it. Do research and come to knowledgable venders like this and ask questions. The only downer is the price here. It a little expensive. You can find cheeper online but you do not know if you can trust them. You can get hemp oil without cbd, or stuff with THC, the psychoactive ingredient of marijuana. ( which for many may not be a deal breaker.) Here you can be sure. Consider too the economy of scale; once it becomes more popular and capacity is reached the price will go down. Yesterday, I pulled up to get some supplies. As I was walking in, I recognized some people from the store, outside assisting an elderly lady. It seemed like the situation was well under control, but I quickly realized the "situation" had just happened. The lady had just taken a nasty fall, after driving herself there to mail a letter. She was very shaken and confused and bleeding quite a bit. I think there were about 7 people there, assisting. The people working at Altsmoke did an impressive job of handling the situation. Any single one of them was of more help than the three other women standing there when I arrived. The team assisted her into the store, it was 14 degrees. They tended to her bleeding head injury, while the women watched. They did not abandon the store, a manager was on the phone with medics and inside the store. He was advising the helpers of what to do. One woman ran off to find gloves, which is important in preventing the spread of illness and disease. However, the blood was flowing and the woman (90+ I'm guessing) needed help right then and these guys were helping. They weren't talking about helping, they weren't interrogating the woman, they weren't running away to find help or supplies...They were doing everything reasonably possible, right at that moment, to help this sweet lady.
