Rick Gallagher and his team are simply fantastic. We did a significant renovation to our 180 year…read moreold house. The Gallagher Brothers did a number of projects for us over a year. People hardly comment on the renovation. We get most comments on the fieldstone wall they built in front of our house. Our front wall, despite being new (but made to look old), was featured in some town presentations discussing the historic stone work in our town. They did a bunch of work for us; repaired a retaining wall at the back of our house (matching its aged appearance, and adding a bluestone bench), installed two dry wells and underground drain pipes, excavated a crawl space in our basement (securing a rubble foundation and poured a concrete floor), poured our garage foundation and floor, installed a cobblestone driveway and our reclaimed granite slab patio. The Gallagher Brothers were very reasonably priced and were hands down our favorite contractors. We cannot recommend them highly enough. They are consummate professionals, and truly kind, good people.

Victor is very patient, cooperative and kind. I'm kind of a lot, and he did a great job of putting up with me. We experienced a number of setbacks and delays because I insisted on very specific materials for certain things, and he was right there with me the whole way, even when we ended up special-ordering shingles from halfway across the country. Victor's team are all highly skilled and take pride in their work. They demolished the old porch, removed all debris, and built us a brand new one. They fixed the siding the old one had messed up. They replaced the gutters with new ones. They patched up the newly-exposed part of the chimney. Every last detail. I also didn't have to hassle Victor to get a permit; he just did it. Which is such a baseline expectation it shouldn't make him stand out amongst his competition. Sadly, it very much does. Whenever you take on a home remodeling project like this, you have a picture in your mind of what you want. For this project, we had really specific ideas, a mix of old and new, materials and techniques. Which is normal. And it never turns out that way. Not once in all the renovation and rebuilding projects I've done over the years. Reality just doesn't live up to imagination. So I don't know how to put this in terms that will communicate how rare and remarkable it is. Our porch is exactly right. It is exactly what we wanted, and looks exactly how we imagined it. I don't think there's any possible stronger recommendation I can give than that. We couldn't be happier. And I am pretty sure that in another 125 years, whoever is living in this house is going to say, "Well, the place is showing some real wear, but at least the front porch is still in great shape."

I interviewed a few masonry companies for repairing spalling brick in my basement. Some wanted to…read moreparge the walls, which was not what I wanted. Some quoted me fairly high prices for the repair, but Martin Forde offered me the best, and most reasonable cost for the job. During our interview Martin struck me as a competent, and fair mason and he is responsive by email, which are valuable traits in a contractor. We scheduled the job, and he and his team showed up right on time. The first thing I learned is that Forde masonry may not have a full time staff. Martin definitely came out to my job periodically to deliver materials, but the masons who did the work were actually two latinos who seemed to be day laborers. They were competent, and very polite as I asked questions in my broken Spanish, but that makes accountability a little more difficult. That became a problem when I was in the basement with another contractor, and I saw one of the mason repairing a hole that was two withes thick. He was just repairing the outward face that I could see, but leaving a whole in the second layer. I asked him about it, so he dropped some mortar into the hole, a few bricks, and kept on with his repair. Yes, it visually looks fine and I would not have noticed if I were not watching as the hole was getting closed up, but that is not what I expect when I hire a professional mason to repair my walls. My job is done though, and I hopefully will not need masonry help for a while. Most of the issues I had are easily fixed with a little more attention to detail, and oversight, so I would encourage others to give Martin a chance if you need masonry help.

A friend recommended Lopez Masonry, and Carlos came right away to check out my steps. His team did a great job with a big repair. Another great thing about Lopez Masonry is that they also guarantee their work. There was some damage from the winter freeze, which they came to repair this week, and it looks great. I would use Lopez Masonry again for future work around the house.

Update: At his leisure and after lots of back-and-forth, Carlos reimbursed me for the work that…read morewill have to be re-done. Lopez Masonry will cost you so much time and money, you'll wish you never heard of them. We hired Lopez Masonry to pour a concrete pad for a hot tub. I noticed they weren't doing everything right, I thought, but the foreman reassured me they were. Well, 2 weeks later when my hot tub got delivered, they took one look at it on the brand new pad from Lopez Masonry and said, "if you fill your tub on this un-level of a surface it will void the warranty." I let Lopez know, and instead of fixing it, he told me the hot tub company is supposed to shim it to level - ON THE BRAND NEW PAD I HAD POURED FOR THIS PURPOSE. Now I have to pay not only to have the pad ripped out and re-done, but I have to have the hot tub company come and move the tub twice more, to the tune of $1k per move.
