FOODIE ALERT! FOODIE ALERT! This place needs to be at the top of your Bologna, Italy list. Salumeria Simoni is a must-do for pre-dinner snacks. It's located close to Piazza Maggiore along a quaint, romantic little side street. Try to sit outside if you can for more ambiance, as the high top tables spill out into the charming cobblestone street.
The service is up to Italian standards: which means slow and slower. Don't come here if you're in a hurry, and plan to spend at least 90 minutes to two hours just to have an apertivo. Arrive early because this is a popular spot with locals and has been since it opened in 1960.
The store serves up locally produced and farmed meats, cheeses, breads, and more. The most famous items here are a local meat plate full of Emilian cold cuts (mortadella, ciccioli, culatello, Parma ham), and a tasting flight of Parmigiano Reggiano with balsamic. We asked our waiter to bring us a sampling of the best local items they had on offer that day, and with a grin, he scurried away.
The guy knocked it out of the park! He started us out with a glass of local Sangiovese (€5) and a glass of local prosecco (€4), both tasty and cheap. Next up was a foccacia with bacon and tomatoes (this wasn't that great, but it was fun to try; it was a little too "bready" for us). Then we had another local favorite, the Parma ham panini. This was a great introduction to the style of cuisine that Bologna is known for. The grand finale was a tasting flight of cheese with balsamic. My hubby isn't a cheese fan so I devoured every last morsel of this cheese. I could've keep eating cheese into the next week it was SO DELICIOUS. If you love cheese, get this item.
The giant platters of cold cuts and deli meats seemed to be very popular but I'm not a fan of that type of cuisine so we didn't order that. Note that tourists are becoming wise to this place so the prices, while reasonable, are actually high compared to some of the smaller places in town (where you can get glasses of wine for less than one dollar).
This is a fantastic intro to Bologna's gastronomy scene. Highly recommended. read more
