Intro: After exploring Bologna to the fullest, we made our way to Osteria Broccaindosso for dinner. Located outside of the heart of Bologna, despite being away from the center of the action, the restaurant was almost full. They didn't have any tables outside so we were seated inside. Service (3.5/5): No WiFi unfortunately which isn't great for an international traveler like me. Standard European service. Not terribly friendly and not terribly efficient but I would say they were a bit more attentive than the norm. They did hook us up with some complimentary limoncello shots which was a really nice touch. Ambiance (3.5/5): A little quieter since it's off the beaten path which I like. A pleasant, homey restaurant. Drinks (4.5/5): We shared a bottle of wine. And the aforementioned limoncello shots. Food (4/5): We went with their pasta for two deal where each person gets three different types of pasta that you choose from six or so options. I love getting a variety of dishes so this was a nice way to do it. Not huge portions given the price but still delicious. The dishes were served to us quickly and we got to try some pastas we had never heard of. Overall: When in Bologna, Osteria Broccaindosso makes for a fine choice. The food was the best we've had in the 4 days we've been in Italy. Some of us ordered the 3 pasta sampler; some ordered the 2 pasta sampler, and we didn't regret it! All of the pasta choices were super tasty and very much enjoyed dinner. We tried 3 different wines and they were all also very good. Our main courses ended with tiramisu and apple cakes, which were also delicious. The staff was friendly and spoke enough English to communicate with us. Wait, I can't believe that did not post a review on Osteria Broccaindosso. We dined here twice during our 5 day stay in Bologna. People would tell us to not repeat a place when there are so many options. But we were so thrilled with our visit, that we had to go back just one more time. The first time I had the Pumpkin Ravioli and my husband had the Beef Steak. We shared both of course. I loved the ravioli and the steak was good as well. We typically don't have steak in Italy, but he was jonesing for steak. I think we had Tiramisu for dessert. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures, and we ate a lot on this trip so I may be forgetting a bit. Service was great and our server spoke English really well. Which helped quite a bit since my elementary Italian gets me by, but is not the best. The restaurant is your typically Osteria. Warm, friendly and inviting. Tables are really close together, so you can ogle and drool over what your neighbors eating. There was a mix of about 70% locals and 30% tourists. It's always reassuring when it's not just tourists. We returned a couple of days later for lunch and were greeted and welcomed back. They brought out some cheese for us to try. I wanted to try the lasagna after seeing it being served around us during our last visit. However, the lasagna was not ready, so we decided to try the 3 pasta sampler. The Tagliatelle was delicious! We also had the Tortelini with butter & sage, and I believe we had the Gramigna with sausage. I know that we thoroughly enjoyed all three. We ordered a dessert that I know we enjoyed and were contemplating how they were going to roll us out of there. Then the owner came out and placed a plate of mascarpone with brandy cherries. I thought I was going to explode, but didn't want to be rude so went in for a taste. It was fantastic! We finished every last drop. Absolutely perfect local Osteria that is also open and quite welcoming to obvious tourists like myself. A relaxing, classic atmosphere with just enough hustle and bustle to put me at ease. Lots of locals chowing down on Bolognese classics and good local wine. The Tagliatelle Al Ragu was probably the best we had in Bologna. Rich and meaty, sweet and savory, with fresh tagliatelle that had just enough springy life left in it, yet still absorbed all of that Ragu goodness. Phenomenal dining experience at a price that won't hurt your wallet too badly. It had some of the best pasta I've ever had in Italy or elsewhere. Tortellini al brodo (5/5) - mini wrapped up pasta balls of deliciousness in a flavorful broth. It packed so much flavor in each bite it was astounding Tagliatelle al ragu (5/5) - quintessential rendition of the iconic pasta dish known as Bolognese sauce pasta in America Lasagna (3.5/5) - interesting and better than in America but I'd skip it in favor of more of the other pasta The dessert was a near limitless assortment of Italian dessert. Came here as a suggestion from my Bolognese friend and it didn't fail to disappoint. The lasagna is to die for!! It melts in your mouth and it is sooo fresh!! You have to press a button/doorbell to get into the restaurant. For appetizers, we got mortadella slices, tortellini in broth, tortellone with butter and sage, lasagna with béchamel sauce, ragu, beef/pork and mozzarella with fresh spinach/herb pasta and semolina pasta which just melted in our mouths, and even a possibility of ten different desserts. We stopped after being served a huge flan, brownie, mascarpone, chocolate mousse, cream cake with rice and ricotta and cream puffs with dark chocolate that you can dip or drizzle. We also got the house red and white wine which was very smooth and not dry. At the end, they served limoncello, nocci and a licorice hard liquor which you can pour as much as you want to help you digest. I will definitely be back! read more

Good, but far from great. The rating is based only on the taste of the food. I tried three different pastas and the taste ranged from mediocre to acceptable. One of the pastas was seriously overcooked. The bolognese sauce was completely bland and needed a lot of seasoning as well as on the dryer side (it lacked texture) but the pasta it came on was at least cooked to a perfect al dente. One of the sauces I had was the porcini mushroom sauce and it also was seriously underseasoned. read more

We came for lunch on a Thursday and despite there being an entire empty room of tables set up in long rows in the front, we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. We were taken in the back room, which was pretty full. Turns out there was a very large party that showed up in the front while we were eating. We ordered the 3 pastas to share, having the tortellini in brodo (nice broth, could have been a bit richer, and tasty tortellini), gramingna with sausage, and passatelli with zucchini. All were very tasty, although they could have been hotter. The bread was very fresh and soft, and the grilled zucchini, eggplant, and tomato and roasted potatoes were so much more delicious than we had imagined. My husband hates zucchini and ate all of the zucchini on the table. We also had a bottle of the house sparkling white, which was light and refreshing. We got the assortment of dolce, which consisted of some kind of thin apple tart with raisins and an anise flavoring, tiramisu, chocolate mousse (oh my goodness, was that lovely!), very chocolatey brownies, and a creamy, custardy thing with the most intense cherries on top. Really a feast. We told the waiter we only wanted one serving of the variety of desserts but the bill charged us for two. Seeing as it was a large dessert platter, we just paid for it. We ate here last night they have a nice simple menu five or six different pastas couple of meat dishes and a few appetizers but the highlight is desserts. We had the trio of pasta to share between two people that the tortellini's were definitely the winner with the sage and butter sauce- lots of nice wines by the glass. It was very busy I think because it's on yelp a lot of Americans find their way over there. Service was good the food came out quickly but here's what you have to watch when you eat there-I was overcharged when I receive my bill. Prices I would charge or not the prices on the menu, and it's embarrassing front of other people to have to confront you later about the check. The daily (house made) tiramisu and mascarpone creme were fantastic. Despite several delicious meals around the region, we continued to talk about this meal for the next several days. If only I'd had more tummy real estate, I would've continued consuming all the delicious plates they put in front of us. Excellent quality and it's a great experience. This place gets a lot of reviews so it seems like it is THE place to go, but it's Bologna.... there are great places EVERYWHERE. While I don't think it's essential dining in Bologna, it's definitely can't-miss. The English is about 75%. You probably cannot go wrong in ordering, but the antipasti is like a round robin of small dishes for $12 a person (I don't think it's possible for just one person to order). Went here on a Sunday night in an area where everything else was quiet, so seeing a good amount of people waiting to be seated was a good sign. The food and wait time were great. A friendly waiter greeted us and a wonderful culinary experience commenced. We came here for dinner on a Friday night and didn't have a reservation. They just happened to have a table for three and graciously sat us very quickly. I had searched for places with gluten free noodles and was excited to try their pasta. We got the starter for 15 euros and two pasta dishes. The starter was a great option for three to share. About 5 amazing plates cane out, everything from warm cheeses to beef carpaccio. They even gave me extra gluten free crackers! The pasta was wonderful as well.
