As a single business traveler I often find it difficult if not a little intimidating to go to…read morerestaurants alone resulting in many nights of room service and two minute noodles. But after visiting Amor Mexico on a particularly lonely night, I am very happy to report that the warm and welcoming staff (not to mention the yummy food and cosy atmosphere) prompted a return visit a week later. And although the staff were different, the way they made me feel genuinely welcome and better still, appreciated for my choice to dine with them, was exactly the same as the first time. The restaurant was quite busy the first night and apart from the volume of the two large tables celebrating birthdays (they weren't that loud - I'm just a grumpy old man!) the service was equally as wonderful as that of the second occasion when there were only 4 or 5 tables of two dining. I ordered different drinks and meals each time and everything was delicious and reasonably generous in size adding good value for money to the list of positives of this place. If you or you and your friends/family are ever in Forest Hill - or within 20kms of Forest Hill - and feel like some yummy Mexican and great hospitality, drop in to Amor Mexico. PS. I talked with the owner on my second visit and was informed it has been a Mexican restaurant for 30 years and hasn't changed hands on the last 15 - which I guess is testimony to my very positive review.

The shop itself is very unassuming - a diamond in the rough. Juanita (or who I assume is Juanita? Should have asked! ... ) was very friendly. She made us feel very welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. We tried the taco mix, pork and chicken tacos. The tortillas were rustic. They come with an array of sides (& plenty of them!) including a pineapple/cucumber salsa, a cabbage slaw, some diced onions, coriander, tomatillo with avocado and chipotle sauce. There was also a couple of Juanita's home made sauces on the table to use. We enjoyed it all! Although quite full we couldn't resist trying the salted caramel Cheezecake. It was really delicious, thick and rich but well balanced with the addition of yoghurt, honey, bitter chocolate and praline served with it. This is a vegan option FYI! BTW - Juanita's sells delicious sauces and spices to take away ... we just had to grab one. We'll definitely head back.

The rice was zesty, full of flavour. The Pork Quesadilla was different and wonderful, better then the other Chicken Quesadilla as I preferred my quesadillas with no sauce on top. Nice and dry. My fault, you learn as you go along. I havnt had Pork for a long time so it was a nice change of scene. I did not have the Fajita Pack my friend did. Sometimes, some of the food had a slightly wet, soggy undertone. Most likely from the sauce that was on top of it. Therefore I would recommend taking it easier on the sauces when you go here. A good, suitable large order with lots of things to try. Decent, 3 stars from me this time.

The Hispanic taste is there but it feels like it is catered for the Australian public. What blew m mind was the dessert, there was so many components to this plate; there was deconstructed peanut butter cheesecake, chocolate brownie, coconut panacotta, caramel flan and berries. The kids and adults all love this and we thought we were too full for dessert, we thought wrong.

This particular outlet is massive, with mountains of seating to look after the lunch time crowds. Get here bang on noon if you want a table right away, otherwise you risk having to line up and wait a little while (though the speed of everything probably means you won't wait long). You can also pre-book for groups of 12 which is great if you want to come during the lunchtime rush with a big group of colleagues. Weekends are a bit dead. I went for a Sunday dinner and our group of 10 had no problem getting seating at 6pm. The selection of drinks is small but the house-made Agua Frescas and the cocktails using local spirits are fun and inventive. The Horchata is delicious and worth a try if you've not had it before. If you're a mad Mexican fan then the food at Fonda will let you down. There's not a lot of punchy flavours and some dishes fall short (the beef taco wasn't that great - the topping bitter) while others are surprisingly tasty though far from authentic (fish taco I'm looking at you). The chicken quesadilla is just plain boring if you ask me, but it great for kids or plain eaters. My advice? Choose wisely and go with the approach of sharing a number of dishes for a bigger variety of flavours.
