I wish I had checked the reviews on Yelp before I came here for a mani/pedi. I walked in for a last-minute mani/pedi before going away this weekend. At first, the woman who helped me was very helpful and recommended that I go with a gel manicure because they lasted at least 2 weeks. She seemed genuine, so I agreed. I had originally picked a light pink color and she showed me a gel color that was supposed to be the same. It was not. It was completely clear, so after a coat of the clear one, I asked for a more pink one. She was clearly pissed when I asked for a different shade because her attitude completely changed. She gave me an eye roll, was immediately on her phone between coats, and hastily put one mediocre coat of the shade I wanted and said we were done. I had a terrible experience here. They have horrible customer service. I walk in after a stressful day at work and I'm met with rude employees. The woman who did my nails (short blonde hair) walked away while I was mid sentence asking her for details regarding their service. I was met with derision by multiple staff members and even told to rush my decision in selecting a nail color because "they have too many other clients". Mind you, I even came a few mins early to an appointment that I set a week in advance! And at the time I arrived there was not a single customer in the entire salon. When I sat down to get my nails down, the lady who performed the service, did not ask me how my day was, what my name is or any other pleasantries. Rather she kept mentioning how "short my nails are", speaking in Russian to her colleagues and chatting on the phone with her son. When I come to get my nails done, I expect a relaxing experience. I don't expect to be treated as less than human, especially not when I ask clarifying questions about the services provided or rushed through the appointment because they want to service as many individuals as possible. Nail salons are a dime a dozen in NYC. I would highly recommend you go to any other spot other than this one! Really unhappy with the service and outcome. I got a gel manicure here less than two weeks ago. Before appointment: I scheduled one far in advance so I could make my work schedule. They were about 10-15 mins late to start it. During appointment: She was very rough on my nail beds. My nail beds were literally burning from the heat that was generated from the nail file rubbing against my nails so quickly and roughly (I had previous gel nails to be removed). Needless to say, less than a week of the manicure, two of my nails have chipped significantly and 4 nails are not fully polished. 1 nail wasn't even fully polished! She was in a hurry to get me out the door so one of my nails isn't even completely painted. There is only one nail technician here according to the receptionist when I called 5 days after my initial appt to have them fix it. Since there's only one, it's rather hard for me to get a time slot for them to fix my nails. They're not open on weekends, which makes it even more difficult unless I get out of work. I really don't recommend this place for a manicure. I would have preferred to do it myself at home. read more

They use Essie nail products for both regular and shellac manicures. I got shellac for only $25 and my manicure stayed perfect for 3 weeks! This is for the nails only-- not hair or other services they offer. I've broken down my review to both the customer service and the nails themselves. They both deserve a 1. On the customer service: Here goes-- I mistakenly bought a lifebooker loot in June because I needed a gel manicure for my friend's bachelorette. I downloaded it and called to make an appointment only to find out their nail salon lady only comes in certain days. This should've raised a red flag that this isn't a true nail salon; it's a hair salon with a nail lady in the back. Well that was fair and my fault so I just made an appointment for when my friend was getting married. Fast forward to the appointment-- I booked a pedicure and a gel manicure for 8/20. I waited 30 minutes to be seen while my friend waited 45 minutes (she actually booked her appointment earlier than mine but was seen after me for some reason). Mid-pedicure, I'm talking about my gel manicure and the lady said I wasn't on the books and she has to leave so she doesn't have time to do my manicure. I didn't want to make a fuss so I rescheduled to 9/5 (today) for my gel manicure in time for my fiance's cousin's wedding & vacation. So I left with just my toes done but as one of the bridesmaids in my friend's wedding, I had to get my nails that night though so I scrambled to find a place that would take me at 830PM. I found one near me and it's the best nail place EVER-- Idea Nails on 62nd-- look it up. That night ended up great because of Idea Nails. Fast forward to 9/5-- I get a call at 3:15 saying that the nail lady leaves at 4:45 on Fridays and asking if I can come in earlier. I can't because I'm at work and I feel like they're on the verge of canceling so I argue with them telling that last time they didn't honor my appointment and that they're the ones who scheduled me for 5:15 so they should honor their appointment. They decided to let me come in at 5:15 (wow thank you, you're so kind to keep an appointment for your customer). Then I called Lifebooker to try to get a refund for my loot knowing that I'd be rushed and get horrible service but the salon refused a refund. Then they call an hour later to confirm I'm still coming in-- a sign that the nail lady is ready to leave but just has to stay because that's her job to keep appointments? Yes, I think so. On the nails: 1st visit on the toes-- She did not cover the nails with enough nail polish. After two coats, you could still see through some spots. I bought the same Essie nail polish color ($8.50 a bottle) and repainted my toes. She also does not know how to use a cuticle cutter. There was a ton of skin cut off shown by how frazzled my toes looked a couple hours later. 2nd visit with the gel manicure-- It looks like a teenager painted my nails (can't say a child cause it's not as bad as that). I paint my own nails better than this. I've posted photos so you can see. Again, she's very aggressive with the cuticle cutters; more skin than cuticle. I was wondering if there's a nail school you can attend to learn nail techniques or how people learn because she needs to brush up her skills. I've never had a gel manicure where they've soaked my nails prior to it. I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to. If you have short nails or bite your nails, then forget about coming here. A good nail lady should be able to handle short or long nails but maybe because my nails are short, she had trouble staying in the lines. When she put on the clear nail polish (base and top coat of gel manicure), she did not care if it went onto my skin or cuticles probably because it's clear but I've had other nail technicians take great care in this. Worst part is I told her I wasn't happy with how the nail polish was spilling over my nails and that I was worried because I can't just use nail polish remover to fix it since it's gel so her solution was after my nails were done baking in the UV light, she took a cuticle cutter to fix her mistakes after she already took off a lot of skin. Oh yah, and the UV light they have burns- don't stick your hand in all the way because you'll get burned. Back to customer service: Both times, she's mentioned how she has to go or has things to do. She likes to point out if you bite your nails, etc. (overhearing from my friend who was there too) or if anything is wrong with your nails. Personally, if I'm paying someone to do my nails, I'd like for them to look better, not to be nagged at throughout. I still tipped 20% because she's a nail lady after all, but I was in and out in 20 minutes (including time to pick my color and tip). Gel manicures usually take 40 minutes. I'm never going back for nails and would love it if you saved your money to go elsewhere. Don't buy a lifebooker loot for this place. Spend $10-20 more and get a real manicure/pedicure elsewhere because you'll have to do it yourself or fix it yourself anyway read more

I came here because I bought the 3 pack of gel manicures from Groupon. They are great for booking manicures ahead of time or just stopping in. The manicurist are super fast and you can get in and out within 20-30mins for a full set of gels. Do NOT go here to get your nails done. They have 2 chairs in the back of the salon that are less than sanitary. They used old files on both my friend and me (since we were traveling we didn't have our own with us and they don't have new ones to buy). Gross! There was really no massage to speak of on either the pedicure or manicure (maybe a half-hearted attempt, but really...). I was not confident at all in the woman's capabilities to do a quality and considerate job, so it was anything but relaxing. The end result? Nails I wasn't thrilled with and a stressed/grossed out feeling. I was in the area in desperate need of getting my eyebrows threaded. It has been a long time coming. My previous experience left me with uneven eyebrows due to dashing into a random salon in another area. I put off coming to the city due to time conflicts. I took advantage of a day off and set to go to my regular place. To my disappointment, this location closed down (queue tears)!!!! On my way back to the train station, I passed Salon Vollo.
