I read the most recent comments and had to chime in. I've been coming to Salon L Manayunk for many years, even before they moved to their current location and I continue to be pleased with the level of professionalism and skill set of the stylists. The salon is respectful of your time and does not double and or triple book their stylists so you are able to get in and out within a reasonable amount of time, receive quality service and not feel ignored or rushed. There have been times when stylists have moved on and the front desk staff made every effort to ensure I was paired with a stylist who specialized in working with curly hair. The owners have worked hard to provide an upscale and relaxed experience that is consistent. The salon is clean, calming and soothing without the threat of children / pets destroying the environment. Please be aware before booking your appointment - Salon L is not a daycare center so if you're asked to remove a disruptive situation, please understand the request - as I personally don't want to be forced to endure the pain. Salon is clean and welcoming. I just moved to the area and needed a balayage. My stylist was Nancy and she was great 5stars for her. Though, unable 5 stars to the salon because what I got was not a balayage considering additional charges. What I gotten, I considered to be more of a highlights They charge extra for glaze, and blowout which is normally standard at other salons with a balayage or color service. Receptionist told me if I didn't add on the blowout option, I'd have to leave with my hair wet. read more

Nancy was wonderful and made me feel so welcomed the minute I came in! So I went Salon L today to get a blowout and they told me that they could squeeze me in. However, I was unaware of what this particularly meant. I wanted my stylist to do a blowout and pin the curls ups so they would be ready for my event later. I was told they could not do this and instead just curl my hair. I then asked for tight curls so they could stay and be ready for later. The girl agreed and then proceeded to do loose curls and brush them out. Now after leaving the salon 30 minutes later my hair is dead straight. Waste of money and time as I could've done a better job myself. read more

Got a men's cut mid June, worst haircut I've ever received, got butchered, my hair was 5 different lengths

My hair was a disaster after doing nothing with it for over a year! Lauren gave me the best cut for my curls and my hair looks and feels so much better! She is so sweet and I really enjoyed my conversations with her! I can't wait to come back for color! Salon L is beautiful and everyone there is so kind! Highly recommend Terri for fellow blondes/balayages!! She was very knowledgeable and provided recommendations based on what she thought was best for my hair and it turned out so nice. I can't wait to go back in a few months. Only complaint was the front desk girl was a little rude and waved me off with her hand after I finished paying. I want to highly advise people not to go to Salon L , hair salon. My daughter and I were disrespected and treated unfairly . We went for a consultation with Lauren and she "seemed" confident in coloring and cutting my daughter's hair. Lauren cut her hair and it was uneven and she did not color her hair properly. I spoke to the manager and she nor the owner of the salon is interested in color correcting my daughter's hair. They will not refund me the $250 either . The manager ,Chelsea, even laughed at me on the phone. This is unacceptable way to run a business. Salon L clearly cares more about money then actually treating their customers with respect. I have referred many people to Salon L in the past and I went there too. No more! I highly recommend not going to Salon L for any service. They have poor business skills and customer service. Salon L has a great vibe (clean, well-decorated, lively) and everyone is super friendly. The parking is a wonderful bonus, especially given the area. Cayla, who I visited, is so welcoming, accepting, and creative in her cuts. I felt so stylish walking out of the salon -- Cayla took four random pictures I'd shown her and turned it into one cohesive haircut that was exactly what I was looking for. It is hard to find such inclusive hairstylists but Cayla is truly wonderful, and the Salon L staff take great care of their clients. read more

I wish I could give this place -10 stars. Rudest salon experience ever. My daughter went in for a blow out and received a basic curl and was charged 75.00. What a total rip off. Her 2 girlfriends got blow outs and were charged 45.00. When my daughter asked why the big price difference, the manager rudely said because you got a top tier stylist and she used a special curling iron. She then continued to be rude to her and told her that her rudeness was due to it being the end of the day. Please listen to your customers and learn to be nice. read more

I had a phenomenal experience with Ryan at Salon L Manayunk and will be a client so long as I live in Philly! :) I have thin-ish, dark brown Asian hair. I have gotten my hair balayaged every 2 years since 2016 so that by the time it gets done, it is essentially back to my natural hair. In the past, I have gotten it done with warmer, more blonde tones. It has always appeared brassy and "orange"-ish. This time I wanted a cooler, more ash brown balayage to give my hair dimension with softer hues. My time at Salon L was unlike my two previous hair treatments. To put it bluntly, Ryan /knows/what the hell he's doing. He is professional, talented, outgoing, friendly, and very clearly passionate about his line of work. He was able to explain everything so clearly and make me feel comfortable getting my hair done (which is a feat in it of itself considering the fact that I am very much a hair novice). I went in for two visits and Ryan was able to make my hair done exactly how I envisioned it and honestly blew my expectations out of the water. Thank you Ryan! :-) Review concerning COVID precautions: the salon appeared very clean and the stylists do a good job making sure you are 5-6 feet away from others. Everyone wears masks. Pretentious, discriminatory and NOT family or children friendly. MOC the owner told me to move my crying baby from the waiting room "somewhere else" because the facial room is just next to the waiting area and someone was getting a facial. My mom moved outside in the rain with my infant and 2 kids so as NOT to disturb the salon. Message received. kids outside so they can't be seen or heard. We are a family of 4 with every 5weeks scheduled cuts, NOT new clients. I was appalled at the disrespectful and callous tone the owner shouted out from his office door to tell us to move away with my briefly crying 1yrs old. It was a special day having his first haircut, why he was crying and to be greeted in such a hostile manner. I was shocked and disgusted. PROS: Kudos to Michael Garity, Luanna and Candace. Words cannot even express how magical I feel after leaving today. I was blessed to be seated in Ryan's chair. I went in with a mop of hair that was damaged due to over processing from another salon, in addition to the toils and troubles of 11 rounds of chemo! I had been letting my hair "recover" for a while and let's just say.... It was time. I shared my vision (and hopes) for a smidge of normalcy back in my life regarding my "do". Ryan took that info and ran with it! A few of his suggestions later, a bit of time in the chair, and PRESTO! It is amazing what some color and a hair cut can do for a girl. First time. Last time. I recently moved to the area, and needed a cut - just a simple trim with long layers. I made the mistake of looking @ Salon L's instagram (instead of yelp). I saw cuts similar to what I was looking for, so assumed the stylists were qualified. When I got home, I saw there were a lot of negative yelp reviews... I showed my stylist four pics of what I wanted - one even had views of the front, side, and back. She nodded, then started separating my hair into sections. That's when I brought up the *first thing* every other stylist asks..."is that the length you want?" She did NOT. When I realized this, she had apparently already cut the back SHORT (4 inches!!). I immediately told her I wanted about 1.5 inches taken off with long layers - she didn't look at me, she just nodded again and kept cutting. I was surprised how quickly she 'finished.' It appeared to be all one length, so I asked for more layers (which she did, quickly again, and only a few in the front). She didn't show me the back or asked me what I thought. I didn't want her to style or blow dry my hair, and honestly just wanted to get out of there. As I was getting up, she literally asked "does your hair grow out fast?" When I got home, I realized that she didn't even add layers to the back - it was a 'short in the back, longer in the front' all one length disaster. Not even close to the pictures I showed her.  I will never go back to this place. I'll have to wait months for my hair to grow out, then find a new salon to fix it...a complete waste of $70.00. read more

Overpriced Cut 3-4 inches longer than requested and uneven. Horrible, careless, thick striped, and lopsided highlights. Up charges without consent Terribly rude attitudes Treat customers like they are beneath them and when you bring a problem to their attention instead of fixing the problems they dismiss you. I always look forward to going to Annie to get my eyebrows waxed! I moved out of Manayunk a few years ago and still make the drive from the city because I don't trust anyone else. She not only does an awesome job but also makes you feel like an old friend. I also got my second facial with her and it was phenomenal: so relaxing and uses great products. Salon is beautiful, too! Terrible experience. I went to Salon L for the first time hoping to either get highlights as usual or a single process to cover my roots. I was left with orange roots half way down my hair. Wish I had paid more attention to the negative reviews prior to wasting close to $300 here and a lot of my scarce time. I read the phrase "rude and ineffective" in previous reviews and I now understand! I was very unhappy with my experience here. I did ask for highlights, but was upset when my hair just came out looking completely grey. When I expressed dissatisfaction--however--offering to pay to have this corrected, the stylist did in fact (unapologetically) charge me to redo it, but acted like she was only doing me this "favor" because she had had a cancelation! Nevertheless, I still expressed interest in other services they offered (like hair extensions), (the triumph of hope over experience!) and she dismissively told me that hair extensions are "expensive", (and that only one stylist there even does them!). Bringing up cost surprising to me since I was already willingly paying a large amount for a cut and color and then even more to correct the outcome, thinking I was somehow paying for "quality". This place is definitely NOT worth the money. I chose Salon L thinking I would be getting what I paid for, but was extremely disappointed. ( I still left a generous tip, but shouldn't have!) I was being gracious acting like the whole situation was because I hadn't clearly communicated what I had wanted, but in reality felt that it was just unprofessionalism and incompetence on the salon's part. Looking back, every stylist in the salon seemed to have the same mall girl look of long extensions of blonde stripes over dark roots, fine for twenty-somethings, just not exactly sophisticated or elegant. read more

I visited Salon L on a whim last Sunday as I was in need of blowout and few salons are open on Sunday. As a first time client I was given a complimentary Voluminizing treatment (instead of conditioning treatment as I had an event later that night and needed the hair to last). Reilly was my stylist and she was great - she listened to what I was looking for and even provided recommendations for how to extend my blowout. Will be back for sure! read more

They are taking good covid preventative measures- spaced out appointments, distancing, etc. My stylist LuAnn knew exactly what I wanted with my hair and didn't try to talk me into anything else. Have you ever worked with someone with the most fantastic hair? Shiny, stylish- you could kill that person for their well coifed mane. Well I work with one of those people and imagine my surprise when she told me she goes to salon l'etoile... What?? I hate that place. Unhappy with my last cut I decided to cheat on my stylist and try this place again - did I mention all of my prior traumatizing experiences?? I must have been desperate.. Well Melanie gave me the most fantastic cut. Trendy, easy to style, works with my hair texture, lots of room to grow and try different styles. I love it.. It's exactly the cut my not so stylish mane needed! I come to Salon L to see Lauren S. for cut and color, and I can't say enough good things about them both. Lauren is seriously a godsend - she gives me the blonde supermodel hair of my dreams!!! Lauren has been my stylist for about two years now, and I absolutely love her. I was in a serious hairdresser rut before I found her - suffering with streaky, fake-looking blonde highlights (which was exactly what I DIDN'T want) and feeling so discouraged. I have a pretty tall order when it comes to my hair color, and couldn't find a stylist who knew how to achieve the look I wanted. My natural hair color is an ashy light brown these days, but I was blonde until about age 18, and strive for that "my hair gets blonde in the sun" look. I also like my hair to be a little "lived in" when I leave the salon, with some darkness at the root, so the roots will blend in as my hair grows out. Blonde highlights from root to tip on a brown base just ain't it, ya kno? Honestly I don't know exactly what process Lauren uses to color my hair; it's some combination of balayage / partial highlight / shadow root / base bump. We always talk about end goal and I always show inspiration pictures at the beginning of the appointment. The finished result with Lauren is always warm and bright, beautifully blended, and lasts me 3-4 months (!!!) Lauren is so sweet and genuine, I enjoy our conversations almost as much as the final result. I've walked by this place a million times and finally decided to make a hair appointment here! I typically go for cheaper haircut places, but it's been awhile since I've gotten one, so I decided to treat myself here. Before the appointment, the email reminder filled with info was great! Once I got to the salon, the front desk girls were very friendly and accommodating. The salon itself was gorgeous and very clean. The waiting area had nice chairs and couches, and even had a cell phone charging station with a variety of chargers hooked up. The main salon area is this huge open room that has various stations throughout. I loved the openness of it - it was so bright and welcoming! My stylist, Lauren, and her assistant, Jackie, were fantastic! They were both very friendly and professional. Lauren did an amazing job with my hair and understood exactly what I wanted. It's amazing how something so small can make such a huge difference. She used this thickening product as well that I really liked and ended up purchasing as well. I typically have always had my hair at shoulder length but I've been trying to grow it long - Lauren was great about answering my questions about hair care regarding keeping the length going. Wonderful experience at this salon! It's on the pricey side for me to be coming here regularly, but I will be back in the future. They are also a full service spa as well, and I think I may be making a massage appointment soon! read more

After reading the reviews on Salon L'Etoile Spa, i decided to take my husband here for his birthday. We both got a Swedish massage and manis and pedis. I thought it was really strange that they only had 1 masseuse and 1 nail technician working on a Sunday - this ruined my idea of a couples massage but i looked past that and still booked our spa package here. Lisa did our massages and we loved her! So sad that it is her last day at the Salon today cause i think that would be the only reason i would go back here. She used great pressure and i didn't end up super oiled up afterwards. The lady who did my mani and pedi (i forgot her name), was much less impressive! She cut my nails too short and i felt like she rushed through both the mani and pedi. My nails were cut square and were suppose to be filed round on the ends but it feels so rough and i had to file them myself when i got home. The actual paint job was bad - it is unevenly painted (one side has more nail polish than the other) and she didn't go to the end of the nail. It looks like she just painted the "tops" and didn't bother about the rest of the nail. It was a beautiful spa but i do not think that i will be going back there ever again.
