Great curly hair cut! I was given good advice about how to treat my thin curly hair. I was also given advice on products to use.

I moved to Anchorage almost four years ago and struggled to find someone who could care for my then-relaxed hair. After a few disappointing experiences with other stylists, I decided to start my natural hair journey and grow out my relaxed hair. For reference, I have 4a/4b hair. I was referred to John at Salon Ginger during this transition, right when I was considering going back to relaxed hair. During my first appointment, John provided a thorough consultation and encouraged me to stick with my natural hair journey. That advice truly changed everything for me. Now, two and a half years after my last relaxer, my natural hair is thriving, and I owe so much of that to John. I visit him every couple of months for deep conditioning treatments and trims, and my hair has never been healthier. On my most recent visit, he trimmed, blew out, and straightened my hair. It looked stunning--just as beautiful as my former relaxed hair but so much healthier and natural! John's expertise and care are unmatched, and I couldn't recommend him enough. If you can get on his schedule (he's definitely in high demand!), it's absolutely worth it. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. Why me! there are chunks missing in the back of my hair! I just can't believe a master stylist totally botched my hair. I asked for blended layering throughout all of my hair. It's not fair. A waist of $90 and I have to live with this for a year until it grows out enough to get it re styled. read more

I've been coming here for haircuts for at least a year and I've received excellent service up until this point. I made an appointment over one month ago, and when I arrived - ON TIME - I was greeted by my hairstylist and told that because I was almost 30 minutes late that she wouldn't have time to see me before her next client (which I question because I arrived early for the appointment I scheduled.) I explained that I was not late and was basically dismissed. Essentially what happened was that my appointment time was changed without my consent and so because I missed the ONE phone call to tell me of this change, it was my fault that I was apparently late for my appointment (which I wasn't because no one confirmed the time change with me!). It was especially disappointing because I needed my haircut like a month ago and they couldn't reschedule me until another month out. Not to mention that I received a call from my hairstylist moments later asking to change the time AGAIN. I've never had an issue here before but whatever is going on is leading to a clear lack of communication and poor customer service. I felt like I was rushed out the door and I had come in really looking forward to chatting with my hairstylist and buying products from there. I would not recommend this salon if you're looking for reliability and great customer service. I surely will not be returning. read more

Made an appointment today on the phone but also canceled in the same phone call. The receptionist said she needed to take my "credit card number just to hold my appointment" (it took five or six tries for her to get the number down correctly) and then I asked if it was for mire than to just hold the reservation. I said that usually when a business takes your card number that there's a stipulation involved. She said yes, that if I were to cancel within 24 hrs that they'd only charge me half the price. (I'm assume they charge the full amount if you cancel w/less than 24hrs notice. I told her that she should give that info when taking people's cc# so they aren't surprised if they have to cancel and then are charged for the services. She seemed put off by this suggestion and it felt very unprofessional to me. read more

I'd had a bad feeling when I met my stylist, but made no assumption about her talent based solely on that fact because, I'll be honest, I always have a bad feeling when I meet a stylist. I don't like the feeling of putting the image I will present to others in the hands of someone who doesn't know me, and I don't like it when strangers touch me. So, the fact that my first reaction was "this girl is going to eff my hair up beyond comprehension," is really nothing out of the ordinary. It's usually fine 30 minutes later, and if it's not fine 30 minutes later, it's almost ALWAYS fine by the next day. It's the next day. It's not fine. In fact, it's been not fine since the shampoo phase. She scalded most of my scalp with hot water, missed the back of my head entirely, and gave a head massage that I will graciously describe as lackluster. A quick towel-off, and I was into the chair. Previously, I had given the receptionist an idea of what I was looking for, and to her credit, she had passed the word along to my stylist, who had a preconceived notion of the cut she wanted to give me. I was pleased to hear that she had thought a bit about this cut ahead of time, but wasn't entirely on board with what she wanted to do, so I made my own very clear suggestions about changes to her plan. I had my verbiage down; I thought that there was little chance of her misinterpreting "I'd like it to be a little longer on top, about 2 to 2 1/2 inches, with a distinct difference between the length of the top and the sides, please don't blend it in. The sides and back should be much shorter." She brightly acknowledged that she understood these directions, and then completely ignored them. There is an even, steady blend from the sides to the top, which is significantly shorter than what I asked for, about 1 1/2 inches. The sides and back are about one inch long. (NOTE: Before you assault my credibility or write me off for not stopping her sooner, I will let you know that I am so terribly nearsighted that I literally cannot see objects clearly until they are about 6 inches from my eyes. I couldn't see what she was doing.) She gave me the haircut she had planned from the beginning, apparently without even considering what I actually wanted her to do. But that isn't the worst offense committed during the hour -yes, an entire hour for a men's cut- that I sat in that chair while she meticulously snipped away several ounces more than the amount of hair I had approved for removal. The worst part is the complete lack of technical skill with which she executed this hack job. I truly thought based on the amount of time it took her to finish my very basic haircut, that she was creating a work of art a la Michelangelo's David: a reductive piece of art in which each hair removed was part of a slow progression toward a masterpiece. In actuality what I got was more akin to Picasso. (Sorry for the tired analogy, but I want everyone to understand exactly what we're talking about here.) Extremely professional and kind staff that always remember your name, constantly offering something to drink or to take your jacket... anything they can do to make your stay more pleasant and relaxing. One of my staff was very nervous about a waxing, and everyone was extremely helpful and considerate to her. They even had the beautician call her to explain her credentials as well as procedure. Amanda was awesome and talked her through the whole situation. At Salon Ginger you may only see them once every 6 weeks, they become not only your beautician, but also your friend. I've also never met such a wonderful receptionist! As soon as she answers the phone, you are met with cheer and friendship. These people rock! read more

I love this place! I have been using Salon Ginger for over a year now. I visit the esthetician, Amanda, every 4-6 weeks and couldn't be more happy with the services she provides. She is very easy going, makes you feel comfortable, and gets the job done in a timely manner. The front desk receptionist, Brittney, is always very cheerful and polite. I absolutely LOVE being a client at Salon Ginger. I've been a loyal customer for over 4 years. While I am there, I can tell that the other clients getting their hair done are also having a special and unique experience. I love the customer service at the front desk also. They give reminder calls the day before the appointment and also a reminder email, which is nice. Also, if I have to reschedule and I call in advance, they are very helpful in finding me a new time that works with my schedule. My stylist is a gift from heaven. I am really really listened to, and I have complete trust in their talent and vision. Every time I have left the salon, I have looked glamorous and fantabulous. It is an amazing feeling to find a salon that is comfy, respectful, clean and fun. It is an even more amazing feeling to find a stylist that is talented, knowledgeable, innovative, and kind. It is an amazing feeling to have found a salon that makes me feel like I am being "taken care of" in New York City, or San Francisco. I highly recommend Salon Ginger. My usual stylist Suggie was out of town. Came in for color and cut with Nicole. She did a great job, as i know she would. Lol. Suggie had sent her all the information on what we mix, etc to get the right color combo. She even has a book of notes about my hair. Haha. I have been going to Suggie for over 18 years. Salon Ginger has excellent customer service, excellent color dyes, and excellent haircuts. I found this place (and Kim, thank God) after my hair was butchered by my mom's stylist when I visited home. Not only did Kim cut my hair and help it return to a normal shape, she also addressed some of the dryness issues I'd been having with my curly hair. She just GETS it. I totally trust her with my (now) luscious locks and my eyebrows. I am always satisfied when I leave and I always feel like a pretty princess for weeks afterwards. I don't think you can get a better cut in town for the price. They do men's hair too! read more

I made an appointment days in advance. I took the time to speak with the receptionist about the look I was going for and my expectations. I did this already knowing it would be a more difficult process, products may need to be stocked for the occasion and I may need to wait for someone more mastered. Once I voiced my wishes to the front help and asked if this would be doable, she informed me that it would. I asked if reference photos would be desired, and she gave me an email to send pictures and notes to. I did that a couple days before my appointment to allow time for preparation. The day of, I met with my stylist and soon felt put off by how unprepared she was for me. I expected something of a "battle plan" when I got there, but she spent a good chunk of time asking me questions I had already answered in email and over the phone. The look itself that I was going for was fairly self explanatory (at least I had thought so and was given that impression by the receptionist), however the process itself was supposed to be tedious as it involved a great deal of bleaching. At the end of the appointment, I was not finished by any means. Which, to be honest, I had predicted that would be the case and was okay with that. However, I did NOT appreciate the fact that she was expecting me to leave the salon with EXTREMELY orange hair. And to not come back for a week. And to pay out the nose for the unfinished clown hair at that. I came back once more in hopes of potentially fixing/finishing my hair and finally getting the look I had been chasing. Needless to say, I did not get a finished look. I got excuses for why they didn't have what they actually needed to achieve my look after having weeks available to them to fully prepare. The stylist did "what she could" to my hair with what was available until the time slot they had predetermined and set aside for me ran out. I couldn't help but wonder how they guesstimated how long I would need without even having a process thought out I again paid out of the ass for an unfinished look. But at least then I wasn't a clown so I booked it and never went back. Horrible. Tl;dr - In my experience, the salon is disorganized, the stylists are less knowledgeable, and it is expensive for what your actual return is. For the prices charged I would expect much better execution and service. read more

I went in to get my hair done for my birthday. I had blue hair and asks for it to just be covered somehow so you can see the blue but preferably dirty blonde. She tried to lighten it by t didn't work and instead of telling my the truth the stylist just covered it with a light brown and you can see the blue right through it. I was clearly unhappy and ended up wasting $200 and 4 hours of my time. It's a shame and yes they could've fixed it but after 4 hours and it being messed up once I had no interest in returning. Nor do I plan on returning. I had to go home and dye it myself to fix the mistake. read more

Best Haircut I've ever had! I have a lot of fine hair and my stylist was able to layer just the ends to make it lay nicely right above my shoulders. My stylist, John, gave the best head massage ever and was very careful when dealing with my hair. He was very friendly and knew when to talk and when not to. Slightly expensive but you get what you pay for! John deserves a raise!! read more

Great haircut. Did a purple ombré. The blend is fabulous. I'm skeptical about the overall purple color, however my hair was dark so there is only so much to work with. Some spots took better than others. The price was a little ridiculous, but that is Alaska for you. I'll go back for my touch up, I'll just cross my fingers that it won't break the bank. read more

I found Salon Ginger three years ago and I'm so glad I did! I have curly hair and anyone who has curly hair can testify to how hard it is to find a stylist who can cut it well. Nicole does an amazing job each and every time. I look forward to my appointments. I enjoy the conversation ( Nicole doesn't double book so you get her full attention) and am always happy with my haircut and color. I'm not so savvy when it comes to style but Nicole's advice is always spot on. The salon is warm and inviting. Often clients come in just to say hello, which says something about the long term relationships that are made there. I can not say enough good things about this salon. read more

I got a haircut and color touch up for the first time at Salon Ginger and I was so impressed!! Paying a little extra for a senior stylist was so worth it, Kim really knew what she was doing. I have very thick, long hair and Kim gave me an trim with layers that took a ton of weight off without having to use thinning shears. She also color matched my blonde perfectly and lightened up my roots to blend seamlessly with the rest of my hair. The salon itself is very beautiful and clean. I left super happy, it was well priced, and I'll definitely be going back! read more

I called Salon Ginger twice to inquire about their hair relaxing treatment. The first time I talked to the receptionist and she took my name/number and said someone would call me back to discuss the process. I never received a call back. I called again a week later, about 10 minutes after their closing time, and left a detailed message on my question and clearly left my contact information. I again never heard back from the salon. This left a horrible first impression on me and I decided to look elsewhere for a hair relaxing treatment. Salon Ginger needs to get their customer service aspect in order. I'd give zero stars if possible. Doesn't the receptionist know that she is the face of the business and being rude and ignoring customers for twenty plus minutes doesn't bode well. Then she freezes up and acts dumb when she is asked to get the stylist - which the stylist told me to ask to speak to her directly!! Then instead of actually talking to my stylist, she looks at another stylist who knows NOTHING of what my stylist and I have talked about and he started to tell her what to do as if I wasn't standing right there??!! Really??!! Twice their online system has "lost" an appointment and it was my fault because when I get the confirmation on the screen telling me the date and time of my appointment, I don't check for an email??? Why would I? I was just told when the appointment was and wrote it in my planner and put it in my phone. Sad. My stylist is really good and really nice and she works at a crap salon with rude crappy people. If the receptionist and the male stylist would have let me talk to my stylist (who by the way wasn't actively working on a client) I would have rescheduled with her directly another time. But no, they handled it completely wrong by offering to have the owner call me (why would I want the owner to call me??? She doesn't know me or do my hair??) My wife went to get her hair done and was told that what she wanted to do would work. After $600 charge "witch I think is way out of line and over priced", Kim fried her hair, the color didn't stay for more then a week, was not at all what she wanted and when she called back to have it fixed she was told by the manger/owner that she was shit out of luck and that they would try but would not be free and as a min would be $140 to $180. My advice don't go here they well rip you off !! After this Salon Ginger well be added to the no go community list for JBER and I well advise NO Military people go there. read more

This is the best Salon in town, hands down. John you are Magical, Facebook friends listen up I have a short story. Over a month ago I called John, and explained to him my 32 Birthday is coming and I am looking forward to a new look. I sent pictures, and ask if we could achive the color, his respond was yes and set me up for a month out appointment. This color was not an easy job my hair is black and to top it off I wear hair clip extensions, so not only do I want my real hair colored, I need my clips to match. Now I knew I was asking for a lot, I have seen John change me to a blonde almost 10 years ago, and been my hairdresser for like 10 years, so of course I trust him but hair bleach ?? That is not a friend of anyone so yes I am concerned. The day came and I sat in his chair, anticipating this outcome, I promise the time could not go by fast enough 9am entered black hair, 2pm exited brown with highlights ...... WHOOOOOOO HOOOOOOO AM I EVER SOOOOOOOO HAPPY. I LOOK LIKE A NEW WOMEN. The best part We achieved this look with no Bleach, pure color. I have never in life seen anyone perfect color without bleach period, John is amazing. If I was a millionaire John you would be all mine, lolololol I tell him that often. The moral of my story is this salon can not be beat, and if you do not know about this place Go Check it out... I love you John and Ginger, you all have made an amazing salon and name for yourselfs. I went to Salon ginger right before the holidays and meeting my boyfriend's family for the first time. I wanted my hair red again, and chose a bright red. I told the stylist I wanted dimension and was considering low lights or highlights, but wanted her opinion on what would work with the red color. I also mentioned numerous times that my place of work does not allow unusual hair colors. The stylist had her manager look at her plan and everything was okayed. The stylist bleached highlights into my brown hair and then put red all over the hair. The highlighted part turned pink. I was forced to wear a hat for two days around work until i found someone to fix it. The salon owner called after the hair had been fixed and when I called her back she never returned my call. A coworker mentioned what a terrible experience I had to another stylist there recently and the stylist said the manager never got my messages. I called again and left a message. This time the owner called me back, but refused to give me my money back. I wasn't even asking for my money back for the haircut or tip. Simply the all over color and highlighting. She said the salon could do something with the style for me, and if I had come in before having someone else fix it she could have made it all red. I think this is false because everyone I talked to about fixing the color said the same thing. If you put red on it again it would turn even pinker. The manager adamently refused to give me my money back and said I could come back and see her. I pointed out that I wouldn't see her given the fact she had just said that she would put red on it (thus turning it pinker according to other stylists). I told her I would continue to let people know about my experience at the salon, and she said I should be careful because she has a lawyer and will sue me for harassment. This is absolutely not the way to treat customers. I loved my first stylist at that salon and if she had given me my money back I would have continued to use that stylist (not the one who turned me pink who I used because the other was busy). The fact that they handled this in such a poor manner is dispicable and then to be threatened over the phone is even worse. read more

ZERO STARS for this place! I have never had my hair done at a salon before. So I for sure was excited about getting it colored and cut. I called to ask for the prices. The lady who answered said it was $90 for color and could be extra for extra color. I asked "What do you mean extra color? Like bleaching it? And she said yes. It from $15-$25. So I schedule my appointment. When I got there the stylist, Kimberly said that it would be an extra $90 to bleach it.Now I'm shocked because the girl who I talked to on the phone gave me the wrong prices. At this point I'm already upset. So I asked if I pay $180 to get it bleached and color, would there be any possibility to get the cut for free. She said "no I'm on commission I can't do anything free." So I asked her for the sake of customer service you can't do anything? And Kimberly replied with a no. I work in the customer service industry. And this place just provides horrible customer service. I'm not trying to get anything free but just seeing how they won't do anything to provide great customer service is just sad. I for sure will let my friends and anybody who talks about getting their hair done to never go here. I did not even get anything done. I just cancelled my appointment and left.
