Everyone who knows me knew I had mentioned getting a haircut since April. Yep, it's July. I waited till July. My need for a haircut spanned four months and two states. Ironically enough I'm very protective of my long hair...maybe not so good at protecting "it" exactly since my split ends were a little up the wazoo, but I really really like to keep my hair on the longer side. Step 1: Okay, narrowed it down to Mtn. View Salons. Step 2: Down to three salons. Step 3: Read reviews on David and set up appointment. I was happy because my weekend schedule was packed and the perfect timing was available. Alas, dooms...oh wait Saturday came. Decor/Atmosphere:The salon itself is pretty basic. The decor is okay...nothing like many of those fancy schmancy salons I've been to before, but I'm not there to feast the eyes. Cut: David knew what he was talking about. He asked me what I wanted to do as I made whining puppy dog, scared noises as I told him not to cut off too much. I asked him to cut off an inch. In terms of layers, I didn't even remember if my hair was layered, but he took the lead and did a nice job with the layers! He also did a very thorough wash with a scalp massage. He also chatted with me about 4th of July and my weekend plans. All around nice guy too...which never hurts! I say, as long as I don't walk out crying, you've got a happy camper. UPDATE 11/25/07: Went in for my second cut and LOVED it!! Grace is so great! For the love of her daughters, Grace has cut her hours back to Wed and Fri only including every other weekend (or was it every other Saturday?)... ======================================================== I can't believe I'm typing these words but: I've never been so pleased with a haircut - especially the next day after styling it myself! I like it better now adding my own "style" to it (which perhaps isn't stylish at all, but what I'm comfortable with at least! Ha!) Go to Grace. Go to Grace. Did I mention you should go to Grace? She's fun and friendly and not overly chatty. And she certainly seems to know what she's doing. My hair is really difficult to deal with. It's thin and fine with a nasty loose wave to it which I try to straighten, and was at the time filthy and pulled back in a hair-tie. I was really skeptical since this was my first time here and I'm honestly used to a slightly higher end salon. But I just can't bring myself to pay $70 for a haircut anymore now with a mortgage and other responsibilities. Grace told me $35 for a cut and blow-dry when I made an appointment over the phone. What a great price! But is it a sign of poor quality??!! The salon is not fancy; neither from the street nor from inside. It was quite dead during a weekday lunch-hour. But sort of a good thing for me since I showed up 1/2 an hour early for my appointment and was able to go right to the washing station! I gave her some rough ideas on length and layers and off she went. I tell you I was judging a book by it's cover the whole time she was cutting my hair though. Thoughts of "ok it's just hair...it'll grow back" and "maybe I should just pay more and go back to that more expensive place to ensure a good haircut" were running through my mind. Wow I'm a really shallow person!! I was very pleasantly surprised when she finished. I paid my $35 + $5 tip and walked to my car. I surveyed it again in the visor mirror (who DOESN'T do that after a haircut?) Hhhmm... really not bad. I got home and looked at it again in my bathroom. Spritzed a little hairspray to hold my pet peeve flyaways. Hhmm even better! Now this morning after showering and drying it with (aha I DID get this advice from the expensive salon) some techniques I'd learned from previous stylists I was just amazed at how great it looked! An EXCELLENT cut! For $40 and only a mile from home! And I'm sure if I had just ASKED Grace for some styling techniques (which were offered to me without my asking, at $$$ salon) she could have helped me out with no problem. Definitely recommend her. Great, friendly lady. The slightest of Chinese accents but I had absolutely no problem at all understanding her or communicating with her. She currently only works MWF but mentioned in passing that she takes late appointments for people who need to come after work. read more

Since my last visit, I went back to the salon for another digital perm (the first one did last 5-6 months), a cut, and a highlight. Was satisfied each time! I didn't quite like the highlight color when they first finished, thought it was kind of orangey (Grace didn't think it was orange but did agree it didn't look as she wanted). She immediately offered to use some toner to improve the color, and it came out much better. I am very happy with Grace and Michelle's friendliness and knowledge about hair. I usually only have a vague idea of what I want and Grace always seems to know how to make it happen on my head. Definitely will come back! read more

This is a salon of high quality service for a fair price. I came here for the first time by a friend's recommendation, and my expectations were exceeded by Sam. I did not have a specific look in mind, but needed to freshen up my ends while keeping length, and wanted some more layers to give my hair a bit more volume. For $55 (before tips), I believe the services given were worth it. Sam began with washing my hair, a very relaxing start. We moved onwards to the chair, where he began trimming my still wet hair. Each step of the way, he would communicate with me what he intended to do with my hair, and confirmed whether or not I was okay with these. This is something I personally value in a hair stylist, as there have been too many times where I have come out of the salon with a too short, too layered haircut. Sam is additionally very precise with his work. He measured several strands of hair from both sides to ensure the lengths were even. After finishing with the bulk of the cut, he blow dried and styled my hair beautifully. To top it all off, he did a little bit more trimming with my dry hair. I am incredibly pleased with the amount of attention that was paid to me during this visit, and will definitely be coming back in the future. read more

Came here for my first haircut post-COVID. Not every stylist I've been to has been able to cut or style my hair well because it's thick and mixed textured. Grace cut and styled my hair and it was such a great feeling to have hair that wasn't heavy and actually had movement again! Brought my daughter here to have her hair dyed by Grace. I was determined to chop off my hair (from boobie line to neckline) and from the awesome Yelp reviews on Salon Finesse, I called to make an appointment. Dammit! Grace was booked, but I settled for one of her staff. I got my appointment for that day (Saturday) yaay! How lucky is that?? When I got there, they were running behind. I was seen 25 minutes after my scheduled time. The floor was still covered in hair! Why isn't anyone sweeping?? Michelle cut my hair and she did a pretty good job. Not really the cut I wanted, but still had the funkiness I was going for. Although her other appointment was waiting for her, she took her time to finish my cut and make it look cool. Blow dry and straightening at no extra cost! The total was $40 without tip. That's pretty damn good! I'll end up going back if I keep this haircut and need maintenance. Michelle encouraged me to get the permanent straightening process ($250 for my short hair!!) because my hair is "fuzzy" as she called it. Too expensive for me. Bottomline: Satisfied with the cut and cost of it. Turned off by some of the comments though, like my hair being "fuzzy" and "you have a lawwwtt of hair." No need to lower my self-esteem! Finding the right hair stylist has always been a challenge for me and for a lot of women I know. I have found my stylist for now, Mindy! Mindy was recommended by a reliable friend and I went still keeping my expectations low since it was my first time. But I was highly impressed with her professionalism. After a 5 minute discussion, Mindy knew exactly what I was looking for. She did make some interesting recommendations, which I agreed upon. She spent a lot of time cutting the hair so I could tell she is a perfectionist for sure. I was happy to take the suggestions Mindy had to offer on hair care and styling hair. From the stellar reviews, I thought I may have found a slightly cheaper alternative salon, but I won't be returning for a repeat visit. I got my hair re-layered and trimmed by Grace, who spent a good amount of time on the cut and used a different technique than I've previously seen for layering my hair (by brushing the back parts diagonally across over my head to cut them from the front). But I found the cut rather unmanageable from the next day onward. As my hair continued to grow out, the layers became more unbalanced and unruly. At the intolerable 6 week timepoint, I decided to get the cut fixed. An analysis indicated that the choppy inconsistent layering was heavy in the back and lacking in the front. I noticed that the hairdressers at Salon Finesse tend to take a flat-iron to everyone's cuts--in fact, this was the only way I could style my hair and have it look somewhat acceptable. I usually spend quite a bit of time caring after my hair and styling it in the mornings, but it needs to pay off. I typically get compliments on my hair, but it was certainly not the case after my haircut here. I hate to be a negative Nancy here, but the only redeeming qualities were Grace's friendliness and the deep conditioning treatment, which are not qualities that would prompt me to return. Maybe I've been spoiled by pricier stylists, but I plan on paying more to get the quality of cuts I'm used to. read more

Originally I was not to sure about this place. it was dirty along the baseboards, the accumulation of hair, oily bits and particles of clipped folicles as you look down at the floor. The lady who styled my hair. was nice, until she flipped to beast mode and grazed my ear with the scissors. & didn't say anything. I'm trying to grow out my hair, & asked her to very lightly texture the top...rather than randomly & smartly textures - she commenced to chop at.. honing in on my thin hair line & ended up taking out huge chunks of hair. I gasped as i witnessed huge clumps falling onto my cloak. I wish she was in less of a hurry and more attentive to my request to not chop at the top. read more

OMG... just got a hair cut from Mindy yesterday and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it so much! Based on a number of excellent reviews, I decided to give Salon Finesse a try. Mindy was my stylist and she did an outstanding job. I have somewhat challenging hair (thick with weird cowlicks) and most stylists have no clue what to do with it. Mindy, however, knew exactly how to deal with it. She seems to be a bit of a perfectionist and spent a good amount of time ensuring that every detail was attended to. The finished product was the best haircut I've had in a very long time. I am a low-maintenance person when it comes to hair. I have an "easy" hair cut: a little longer than shoulder length, some layers framing my face, and a bit of texture since my hair is thick. I give these instructions, and let the hair stylist do his/her job. I've been to Salon Finesse a few times. Michelle (who no longer works there) and Grace provide solid haircuts. The latest time I went in for a haircut (I had made a reservation earlier in the week), I got a nice enough guy that works part-time at the salon. I think he washes hair most of the time...I'm not convinced he had ever gone through any type of formal hair training...if so, he should get his money back! :-P After about an hour of fiddling with my hair (and having a neighboring stylist look on with a worried gaze), Grace had to take over and finish up (redo!) the job. As a result, I ended up with an OK haircut, and Grace sheepishly gave me a few shampoo samples as I checked out. This experience left a really bad impression. Professional places should not be letting inexperienced people represent their establishments. Not to mention, 1) the whole process took forever, 2) my back was soaked in water, and 3) they made me pay the same price as my usual haircut. read more

Grace is my new go-to person for hair coloring. Based on all the wonderufl reviews, I decided to give her a shot and I am more than pleased! My hair had turned a sandy brown due to my previous hair color and I wanted something thats more natural and near to the natural color of my hair. Grace gave me a few highlights and also added shadow highlights to the brown-auburn shade by using a hint of violet. So the highlights are not too obvious and my hair looks healthy and shiny with a sort of gloss due to the deep violet. Grace did the coloring with a skill that indicates expertise and effortlessness and also was very easy to talk to. She did the wole job in abt an hour n half and it cost me $165 which is very reasonable for the job done and the quality of service provided. Felt super-rushed by Grace, she had clearly double-booked me and basically spent a total of 30 minutes on me (including wash and blow dry). She didn't bother checking for a part and didn't make adjustments after blow drying my hair out, so there are a few random strands that stick out a little funny. Just sloppy work overall. Also I specifically asked for something that would be a low-maintenance cut and didn't quite get it. It's a fine haircut but I'm definitely not raving about this place like everyone else is. I called at 3:55pm to ask if Michelle could cut my hair that day. She said to come at 4pm (eeek! I can't drive that fast!), but then consulted her book and fit me in at 6pm. I have Asian hair and it's just lanky, straight, and boring. I also hadn't cut my hair for 18 months to grow it out for my wedding, so I really really needed a cut. I showed Michelle a picture from one of her hair cutting books, and she totally did the picture on my hair -- she probably took off 4 inches. She's very methodical, and does everything in a certain order, which helps to keep your hair neat, and I like that she blows you off before removing the cape, which helps minimize itchiness after. Why only 3 stars? Well, it's a good hair cut, but it's not the best that I've ever had (that would be a lady in Flushing) -- also, I know she has to make a living, but I still think $45 for a cut + $10 tip (I tip good, ok?) is kind of pricey for a hair cut. I'll try cheaper places next time, but she got it done right, which is a good start! read more

I've gone here for my past three haircuts and have always come away satisfied. True, I usually just get the "I'm tired of my long hair, chop it all off" job, but Grace does nice layering on the ends of my really fine hair so I don't look like a crazy mushroom head. I've only had Grace; there's another stylist here as well but I can't vouch for him. Last time I was there, he was doing some coloring or highlights on another female customer. Grace Rocks! She has done my cut and color about 4 times now. I have long thick hair and she has managed to texturize it for ease of styling. Also, everytime I have gone to her I have done at least 2 tone color. She is very patient and doesn't rush through the process at all. My 9 year old son has also had his hair done by Grace and she does a fantastic job, he won't let anyone else touch his hair. I am giving Michelle 3 stars.. She is super sweet!. My gripe is that I asked her to take off no more than an inch and when I left, I was missing at least 2!!! She said that she had to make it even, I think my hair was even when I came in soo that just leads me to think that she cut one side short and had to make up for it. My other gripe is that I like the wash and go style, and told her this. I think she went a little over board with the layering and i didnt notice while there since she flat ironed my hair. SHE IS ABSOLUTELY FREAKING PHENOMENAL!!!!!! indulge in my path of haircutting hell that led me to this rare find. it all starts out with the fact that my mom is cheap and cut my hair at home until i was 18. my first "salon" cut was out of a vietnamese lady's garage off of tully road that came out to a whopping $8 including tip (what a splurge!) if you're anything like me, you're sick of going to the really cheap asian places because 1. the cuts suck and 2. so does the language barrier. at the same time, you refuse to shell out a hundo for a fancy cut from a fancy salon. if that's the case, consider your search over and book a damn cut with grace. grace is the first person i trusted to give me an "extreme" cut. i've had the same long layers since i was five. yep, it's the same layers that every asian girl in the bay area seems to have. the first time i walked into the salon, i asked grace to give me a lob if she thought it would suit my face shape. after a few minutes of throwing around suggestions, she started to cut and i instantly became tense. change is scary! grace was really soothing and reassured me that the cut was looking great! she used this really cool technique that i've never seen before involving two combs crossing in the back and cutting downwards across the teeth. you know when you have a really extreme cut, you typically hate it b/c you're not used to it? typically it involves a few tears? well not this time! when all was said and done i immediately loved it and it felt strange to have a haircut without remorse! my friends and family all gushed at how stylish it looks and how well it suits me! the cut cost me a very reasonable $40. i should also mention that every cut comes with a free shampoo. they only use the pureology products that smell amazing! between cuts, grace will also maintain your bangs for free! grace, you are the best. you have earned yourself a lifetime customer. read more

I had just moved back from LA and was in need for a cut and re-perm. It was my first time going to Salon Finesse and now I'm hooked! I had the pleasure of experiencing both Grace and Michelle's expertise when Grace gave me my layered cut and Michelle gave me the digital perm. I kept asking questions along the way because I was quite nervous, but they were both very good and wiped away all my worries. Both the cut and perm came out awesome, I'll definitely be coming back. I think it was about 200 dollars for the cut and perm combined. Oh, Grace was soo nice that she even shared some of her lunch with me (it was lunch time, and I had been there since 10 am)! Though I don't think everyone who goes in there should be demanding free food lol. First bad sign: A man (? I think possibly associated with the salon) was smoking outside the back door, and the smoke was wafting in past the hair-washing area... UGH. I said something like, "Wow, that's kind of unpleasant, huh?" and Michelle just nodded her head and proceeded with the hair-washing. Gross and unsanitary. Second bad sign: The stylist did the ONE thing I implored her not to do, which was to cut the front part of my hair too short for it to be tucked back behind my ears. Sorry if you disagree stylistically, lady... if the customer has one request, please abide by it. Third bad sign: She told a gentleman waiting in the front that it would be "just a few minutes" when there was no way she was within a few minutes of finishing my haircut. Way to rush the job. The result: In the words of my brother who lived in Korea for a year, I looked like a Korean pop star.... a MALE Korean pop star!!!! I am a lady!! Disaster. I ended up waiting 6 weeks for things to grow out a bit, then going to Edge Salon in Palo Alto to get it fixed. NEVER AGAIN (why did I even go in the first place!?). read more

I saw someone with a cute haircut in lecture, and when I asked about she gave me Salon Finesse's business card. I went, and this was the first time I have EVER walked out of a haircut IMMEDIATELY happy about it! (It usually takes a couple hours to for me to get comfortable to change.) I had a smile on my face all the way home. (: I booked my appointment with Grace, and on an early Thursday afternoon I was one of two customers there. I have thick Asian hairs, but not a lot of them. I asked Grace for "something chin-length but still really girly, and with side-swept bangs" and she did great! Much better than the two Korean ladies I've used in Illinois, and the one time I tried a Regis salon (ew.) I asked for the 20% first-timer discount and got a funny look, but that made the haircut only $28, and I tipped on top of that. read more

I've been getting my hair cut by Grace since the beginning of the year. She always does a great job...my favorite part is the hair washing which she spends a lot of time on, feels so good! A couple of things that keep me from giving 5 stars is the fact that I always have to wait at least 20-30 min after my appointment time because she is always backed up. Today, the whole process (for a trim) took 1 hour and 45 minutes. Also, I've been paying $40 since my hair is short and today she charged me $45. When I asked about it, she said it's for longer hair....it hasn't grown more than 1.5 inches since I started seeing her and I get it cut every 2 months. I understand prices fluctuate and don't mind paying a little more to support the salon but she could have mentioned it and explained why...it didn't show much appreciation for loyal clients. Overall, I would recommend Grace, she definitely knows what she's doing and has good technique! read more
