I booked an appointment for a permanent all-over color that was listed as $75, but at checkout I was charged $221 because of extra fees I was never told about. I only found out when it was time to pay. As a college student who budgets carefully, this was really upsetting -- especially since I drove over an hour to get there thinking the prices were affordable. The stylist also gave me a haircut after I specifically asked if I was booked for one and explained I didn't want extra charges. She said she "had time" and went ahead, but then I was charged for it anyway. On top of that, I asked for a dark wine red and ended up with a super dark plum/purple that looks almost black in the light, which wasn't what I wanted. What really bothered me was the lack of communication. No one sat me down and explained what the extra services or costs would be, which would have let me make an informed decision. If I had known, I would have chosen differently. Instead, I left with a color I'm not happy with and a bill three times higher than expected. I also felt uncomfortable during the appointment because the stylist made negative comments about another client and her younger sisters. My acrylic nails would fall off at the 2 week mark and I was told that's normal. Went to a different nail tech at the same salon and the paint job looked like my 3 year old did it. The customer service is great, they fixed it, but to take time for the appointment and then to go back and get it fixed isn't worth it. In my experience it's less experienced techs. I have gone to Salon Essentials for about ten years, and I have only received one unsatisfactory haircut. I assumed the stylist was new and did not see them around the salon again. I assumed they moved on and continued with Salon Essentials and ept receiving great cuts and service. Today was different, though. I typically only get a haircut a couple times a year due to budget, and I was looking forward to a little pampering. I scheduled a 45-minute women's cut which includes (according to the website) a consultation, wash, haircut, blow dry, and style out. I look forward to the shampoo the most (that's the pampering part!). However, after ten minutes and a dry cut, my stylist asked if I wanted my hair straightened or curled. I said curled but first asked about the wash. She replied that my hair was clean and quickly moved on to curling my hair. I absolutely hate confrontation so I didn't say anything. A few minutes later, I went to the front desk to pay and was charged the full $38. I was (and still am) highly disappointed but again, I hate confrontation. I paid and quickly left. Overall, the haircut itself is fine; it's nothing to be upset about but also nothing to be excited about. The curls fell out before I even got home. My hair looks the same, just shorter. It has now been over 6 months since my most traumatic haircut and I'm just now feeling more comfortable to be able to speak up. I wish I could say I was being dramatic when I say traumatic but for something to induce tears everytime I caught a glimpse of my reflection, I don't think I'm exaggerating too bad. I came in asking for a shag and brought in enough inspo pics to explain what I liked and didn't. The stylist must've been newer because it was like she was having fun in my head and experimenting. It went to the extent of calling in another experienced stylist multiple times for help. I am a very non confrontational person and left without complaining and even tipped. It was when I got home and ran to as many stores were open to find hair supplies to fix/hide the mess on my head that I decided I needed to call them back. I call back the following business day and was greeted with lack of sympathy and refusal of a refund. I want to preface this with I have never left a review, good or bad. But, when you receive exceptional service you have to make it known. I scheduled an appointment for my mom to get her hair done and she struggles with salons due to a language barrier. But, she was seen by Jo at Salon Essentials and Jo was so kind and empathetic and my mom felt welcomed even though her first language isn't English. Jo deserves a raise or better hours or whatever you can offer her because people like her don't cross your path everyday. We will be coming back due to her kindness. I am so thankful my mom had such a great experience. Also the front receptionist gals are amazing. One of the receptionist (red hair) went down twice to the basement to get us products. I myself received a facial by Taylor and she was very kind and patient. She took the time to create a plan of care for me to regain confidence in my skin. I got my hair done at Salon Essentials at the end of June, and it was the worst experience. I went in and showed the stylist a picture of the cut and style I wanted, and I was shocked at the end of the appointment by how different it was from that. However, when I got home, I discovered she had styled my hair in a way that hid the fact that my face-framing pieces had been fried completely off! I was horrified. She did not speak up or say that these pieces had fallen out. My hair had some previous color in it when I arrived and the stylist knew this, so she did two test strips. She told me that the color lifted perfectly fine and we could go ahead with the highlights. I paid for the extra conditioning treatment, but my hair is still extremely brittle and dry. I called the salon to speak to a manager and/or the owner, and when I asked for a refund she informed me that it was against their policy, but I could come in to get my hair redone. I did NOT want them to touch my hair again. She told me I could email the salon at their Gmail and send them the pictures to review, which I did, and said to call the following Monday to speak to the owner. On Monday, their staff lied to me saying the owner wasn't in the office (she was), but said she would call me back if I left my number. That never happened. My hair fried off. I did not get my money back. I have to live with her mistake for months if not a year now. This was a terrible experience. My daughter and I had 60 minute massages this past Saturday May 4th. We are from California and we were visiting my son and decided at last minute to get massages. We were not disappointed. First off, I have a bit of experience with Massage Therapists as I am the VP of HR for a Health Club Company in Northern California. I recruit and hire Massage Therapists for our clubs. I am however, very ashamed to say I do not remember the names of male and female massage therapists that gave us our massages. We had appointments for my friends wedding. The staff was nice. However the nail techs are not the greatest beyond color. I just had gel put on with no complaints, little pain when cleaning my Cuticles. The bride and flower girl however... the bride had to go someplace else after the event to get her nails fixed. Two broke / chipped two days after. My biggest complaint is that they have a eyebrow threaded, Manhattan KS needs one of those! I was excited, I asked if she could fit me in when I heard her apt for hair was delayed.... she said her hands HURT and if she did another session they would bleed. This is an update to my first review. I received a call from management apologizing for my unpleasant visit which to me goes along way. I will be giving this salon another chance and appreciate the phone call. I just recently moved back to manhattan so I was really excited to visit my favorite salon. Well I scheduled an essential facial and I was really disappointed. I arrived 5 minutes early and did not get brought back until 15min after my scheduled appointment time. When the girl took me back she didn't apologize or really say anything... while she was massaging my neck my head was turned to one side and I could have sworn she was texting with one hand and massaging me with the other.... Over priced, subpar, and lackluster would be the best way to describe it. I have defiantly received much better pedicures for 50 dollars. I had to ask the technician to please take some more time on getting my cuticles because I could see she hadn't gotten them all, when I got home my feet weren't completely smooth, the ""massage"" went to just above my ankle and lasted all of a minute. First of all, they are very flexible - I have called and gotten an appointment on the same day or with a few day's notice. Second, every person who I have been paired with has been great. Third, Salon Essentials uses CND products. I first experienced CND spa manicure and spa pedicure products at the Atlantis Resort in The Bahamas, and purchased just the almond scrub there. That was...er...2 years ago, and I had not see other CND products in a store. I was able to buy the almond hand lotion and the cucumber heel treatment here, plus the solar oil for cuticles and the almond nail polish drying spray. These products are used during nail services. Also, the regular nail polish is CND, which actually does not require a base coat! That means the polishing part is quicker and not so clumpy. The massage chair is great for spa pedicures too. I went in a little over two weeks ago. I needed to bleach my hair so it could be toned to white with a blue fashion color mixed in. My hair had a bit of growth but was already mostly icy blonde. I spent over five hours in the chair and the result was splotchy. The its yellow with some very icy blonde patches and some light orange thrown in too. After the bleaching I was told I couldn't have the blue color and to think of a different color because of the splotchiness. I paid 400 dollars to basically have an at home bleach job. I have never paid 400 for a bleaching in the 20 years I've been dying my hair. I will not come back to this salon for any service. read more

The only reason I go to Salon Essentials is for Tiana she is an AMAZING stylist! I have booked my cousin from out of town as well as my sister with her. My cousin went in to get her haircut called me and told me they told her the stylist name and it was NOT who I booked it with! The same exact thing happened with my sister's appointment and she walked out! When I called to voice my concerns and disappointment I was told they move appointments around to make room? Really?? How is that fair to the stylist? They do not give a courtesy call to let you know that you have a different stylist. The person that answered the phone asked if I wanted to talk to a manger I told her no I had fungus from a fill there and the owner did nothing except offer me liquid fungus for my nails. Tiana is AMAZING like I said and there was a young lady named Grace that was amazing as well and one of the staff members degraded her so bad she quit and when I heard what happened I was ashamed to be going to Salon Essentials. When I went in for a haircut I had a terrible lightening job from from somewhere else and I decided to cut my losses and start fresh with a cute pixie cut. I showed the stylist a picture and told him what I wanted : same length all around like Audrey Hepburn style. What he gave me was an old lady short hair cut, where it's long on top and shorter on the sides. He left me uneven at the nape of my neck ( which I couldn't see until my husband told me). The long top style is kind of trendy so I paid and I left thinking to myself "maybe I didn't explain myself correctly." I went back for a trim told him again, "same length all the way around and fade the back to blend." What he gave me was a little boys haircut. AND IT'S STILL NOT THE SAME LENGTH ALL THE WAY AROUND. My highlights were uneven at the roots, the toner didn't work and the stylist didn't even fully dry my hair. I was hesitant to try anther salon (having had my hair done by the same person for 15 years and having that be my first experience with another stylist) but a friend recommended Salon Essentials. I was referred there after I wanted to go from brunette to blonde. I've been to all the other major salons in manhattan- Gaia is nice but overpriced and salon experts is the same. I asked for a stylist with lots of color experience and got Whitney. She was honest and upfront about what she could accomplish in one session. I left with a pretty highlight and a good cut. I've been back several times and can't complain! They even have childcare on site for their customers. I've also had my nails done there and the tech did an amazing job and was much cheaper than the strip mall nail salons. Give this place a try! I see there's only one review for this business, and it's not a good one! Honestly, I think these ladies are great, but based on the other reviewer's comments, I think it all has to do with who your stylist is. The girls I've worked with have been fabulous - I've been five times since I moved here in January for both nails and hair (cuts and highlights), and each time has been a positive experience. The salon doesn't look like a salon from the outside; I actually thought it was a warehouse store until someone clued me into the truth. I think the prices are very reasonable for the level of service (each stylist's prices vary by their level of experience), but then again, I've lived in DC so maybe I'm just relieved it's not a triple digit bill for a haircut. Everyone I've been served by has been very nice, professional and skilled, though I think their pedicures aren't quite as nice as they could be for the price (sounds silly, but the chairs aren't massage chairs, and that's one of my favorite parts of a pedi!). If you're nervous about a good haircut or color, I suggest Kerri - she's done a great job with my highlights and I'm incredibly picky about that. My hair is long, so it's not rocket science to cut, but she's done a great job of adding layers for body and face framing pieces. Whether you are just looking for a trim so you can grow your hair out (my last cut was only a quarter of an inch), or something completely different (she is great at ombres!) Hollie is your girl. I have had Shellac manicures here for a couple months now. However, the last two times the manicures have just been very poorly done. I don't think it is due to a lack of attention to detail, but believe it is most likely due to management choices. The lighting is terrible. The girls many times don't have enough product left in the bottles to enable you to have the color you pick. I went through three color choices last time I went, because they don't keep a back up of each color! Crazy. So to avoid that this time, I asked for French, and it is pretty much a mess. I got an eyebrow wax by jasmine and when I left it didn't even look like she did anything. I have thick brows and I just wanted them cleaned up. She used wax but didn't get anywhere close to my brows. Quite honestly I don't even think she touched them. All she did was got the stray hairs here and there. When she pulled out tweezers I thought okay well she'll tweeze the hair that are close to my brow line, but nope!! Don't waste your time if you have thick brows. I think she may be used to fine light brows. When I looked at my brows afterwards they looked okay. She had a small mirror for me to look in when I was done, it wasn't a magnifying mirror. There was a larger mirror in the room, but I didn't do a good job of looking my brows over. Even if I did the room was pretty dim and on the darker side. Guess it's my own fault. Today was my first time at this salon and I will be a returning customer. When I called to book I was greeted by a friendly female who gave me multiple options and times and seemed happy to speak to me. Upon arrival I was early and was greeted again with smiles. Even though I was 30 minutes early I waited no more than 10 minutes. Laurel was who cut my hair. She was fabulous! She was friendly and super personable. She was easy going and very gentle with my hair. Laurel truly listened to me when I described the cut I wanted. When I asked her to go a bit shorter she was happy to do so and made my hair perfect. I came in to get a very icy blonde all over color. My stylist was Josh and he was so sweet and I had a great time chatting with him. However, I left my initial appointment with very orange hair. I called and they got me in the next day and Josh toned my hair twice and got me to a dark grey color.
