Having naturally curly hair is a pain. You know what's even more of a pain? Trying to find a hair stylist who can actually work with it. Since moving to San Diego a year ago I have a had a string of horrific haircuts. I get my hair cut quite frequently because no cut ever seems to do the trick. I researched getting a deva curl hair cut but after a lot of reading I realized that maybe that wasnt the best option as I like to wear my hair straight and curly so the deva curl cut can look very choppy and uneven when it's straight. I stumbled across the Ouidad cut and really liked the idea of it. I decided to book one and found that Salon Envie offered these cuts. I had my first cut with Ana yesterday and I am certainly an Ouidad convert. She listened to me and took into account exactly what I wanted. Some hairdressers look at you and have their own ideas with what they want to do and just go at it. Ana talked be through the entire cut and told me everything she was doing and why. Ana gave me a completely new view on how exactly I should be styling and looking after my curls. She even showed me some tricks of what I can do at home when I'm doing my own hair. Honestly cant express how impressed I am with this salon and cut. I have very thick, yet very fine, blonde hair and for some reason 99% of stylists have no idea how to cut and style it. After an absolute disaster at a different supposed 'upscale' San Diego salon, I went to get my hair fixed here. I chose Salon Envie because Anna is certified in the Ouidad 'carve and slice' method. It's meant for curly hair, yet it really works on my hair due to it's thickness. I was told by Anna that my haircut and color from the other salon was one of the worst she had seen. My hair was literally an orangy blonde color cut into the shape of a horseshoe! Yet she managed to repair the haircut and tone down the gross neon blonde into a warmer golden color. The ambiance of the salon is relaxing. They play mostly classical music, which helps set the mood for a stress free session of beautification. One of the most appealing aspects about the atmosphere is there is no "chicken coop" cattiness or gossip, which is an expected feature at most salons. The only downside is the parking situation. All of downtown La Jolla is a nightmare for parking, and this is no exception. Make sure to check the signs to see how long you can park, and make sure to IMMEDIATELY move your car once the time is up or you will get a ticket. read more

Having recently moved to SD/La Jolla, I was desparate for a haircut, but also terrified to go to just anyone. Having extremely curly locks, I have many horror stories of people that claim they can cut curly hair...but usually results in me leaving a shop looking like a frizzy cotton ball, or I straighten my hair and find it to be lopsided. A friend of mine told me about Salon Envie and a couple of the stylist that cut curly hair. I was still hesitant, as my friend's hair is more wavy than curly. However, I also recently learned about the Ouidad product line and cut. Upon searching their website for a Ouidad tranined stylist, I was directed to Ana Nelson at Salon Envie. I decided to go for it, and I am SO glad I did!! Ana was able to cut and style my hair, bringing out curls I didn't even know I had! My hair has a lot more bounce, volume, looks healthier (as those are the compliments I continue to get from other people), and is even all the way around. No more layers shorter than others. They're all even and sit just right. I admittedly walked out of the salon in a little bit of shock, as I was not used to how curly my hair is now. She was able to bring out my hidden, inner curl diva! But I am more than pleased, and will make it a point to visit again. I hate to write bad reviews but I had to because of the terrible Ouidad experience that I had at this Salon in mid February. I was hoping that the hairstylist would demonstrate to me Ouidad's slicing technique when I went in for a consultation but she did not. I went from classic gorgeous curls to terribly frizzy curls and a second hair cut which didn't fix the problem. Although I was refunded by the hairstylist but every time I look at my frizzy curls (the frizz is all over my hair by the way. Small sections of my hair were held outward in the shape of half a circle and were sliced at the top and bottom) that I attained after the Ouidad slicing technique, I want to go back to my regular hairstylist and get a boy cut and that is why I had to post this review. My only experience here has been with Ana and it was amazing! I have very curly hair and have had trust issues with hair stylists in the past. My hair was brittle and frizzy and so long that it was weighed down, I hated it but was so nervous to go anywhere and get it cut. I found Ana and she is definitely the best. She gave my hair life! His justification was that he was taking too long to do hair and I had to be out before 2 pm. I had rearranged my schedule and had to get childcare. Now I will have to take my business elsewhere. I did give him a chance to remedy the situation by letting him know my afternoon was free. He did not bother to respond. Not always easy to find someone who can do good color on natural red, but Ana not only gave me exactly what I was looking for, she charged a more than fair price (better than I was expecting in La Jolla!!) and everyone in the salon was so nice! I loved getting my hair cut by Christopher, I wish I could have given more than 5 stars. I have extremely curly hair that is also very frizzy. I found on the ouidad salon finder that he was certified in the carve and slice method. I ended up cutting around 8 inches off of my hair and with the right styling products and a great cut, it actually looks nice! Most other hairdressers are either afraid of my hair or just try to straighten my curls but he totally embraced my hair. Also, compared to other salons I've been to, I didn't find the price to be outrageous. I will only go back to him! read more

I'm 65 year old Gram who lives in Michigan and discovered Christopher at Salon Envie while visiting my son in La Jolla. I have thick dark hair and lots of gray and finding someone who can contour my hair has always been a challenge. Stylists in Michigan like to contour the ends and I've left shops with absolutely no shape. Christopher knows how to shape/thin out my thick mop and when I leave - it's short- sassy and I love it. He also does great lowlights. My son has moved to Carlsbad and the hour drive to LaJolla is worth it. Actually the trip from Michigan is worth it. I've been to many places looking for someone that can understand what I'm looking for, but have routinely come out looking like Forrest Gump. I was a walk-in with Katrina, and have never looked back. I was recently in California, visiting from Vancouver, and found out about Anna from the Ouidad site and I immediately booked in with her. I have very curly hair which has never really been cut, just badly trimmed into a triangle over the years. I took a before picture and thought I looked pretty good, but then Anna got hold of my hair and WOW is all I have to say! My hair has a nice shape that compliments my face and my curls are now ringlets. She took a little more off than I initially wanted, but she is very talented and I am glad she did as it looks great.
