I had come here a few times with 2 different stylists. The first time was a few years ago and she gave me botched micro bangs when I asked for curtain bangs. Then I came back recently with a different stylist and she did pretty well until my last visit. I waited 25 minutes past my appointment time, I was understanding because I know timing things can get tricky. Once I was seen I felt like the stylist was rushing. She cut my hair in 10 minutes and wasn't being thorough and doing the things that are normally done to ensure even hair. When I saw my hair I was shocked but thought maybe I was just not seeing it correctly. At home when I was checking my hair it was completely uneven and I realized what I saw at the salon was true. Another hair botch story for me. I ended up rushing to a salon near my house called The Jaycie Collective and they took me in even though they didn't have walk ins, they squeezed me in anyways just to fix my hair. one side was totally longer than the other and the back was also completely messed up. I left a review on Google and the business replied very immaturely, denying what i experienced at this salon, and blatantly lying. I am appalled with the unprofessionalism and lack of accountability from this business. I was scammed and lied to. I walked in the door and was greeted awkwardly by the woman at the front who seemed to be eyeing me up and down and proceeded to hand me a sticky note to write my name down on and stand around with no further instruction When I got to my chair I told my stylist (Michelle) how I wanted my hair trimmed. She did a decent job aside from cutting my neck while hacking away at my hair with an electric razor (that I was told she "hasn't used before?) and even skimming down the hair on the back of my neck to which I now have a stubble lol. It was an okay haircut and I'm not very picky. I like the way my trim turned out although I've received better service from the teenage students at aveda institute in Portland for $15. Michelle was friendly and got the job done, but with a few bumps in the road that I'm not very pleased about. I maintained a polite and kind composure and even tipped generously although I was not very satisfied with the professionalism of the business and I felt uncomfortable and unwelcome as someone from out of town who does not frequent this salon. I think it's both odd and a bit pathetic to attempt to gaslight their customers by saying I was "never in the salon". I was in fact in the salon and paid for service. I was never emailed my promised receipt but I do have the charge on my card history. I was never quoted a price, I called ahead and asked if they could slide me in for a trim. I do not think it was worth $80 but it is what it is. I think that the responder of my review assumed that it was written by my mother, which is odd considering my name is attached to it. Maybe they assumed that me, a 21 year old girl would not stand up for myself. As someone who has worked in the service industry, a complaint is typically handled more professionally than this with a "what can we do to fix this?" point of view. I'm disgusted with the immaturity of this establishment and I certainly would not recommend getting your hair cut here. I don't often get haircuts, but when I do, I meticulously do my research on what stylist has experience with long, thick hair. I guess you can say I'm picky with who I trust my hair with. I saw such raving reviews on Blake, so I couldn't help but book an appointment to see him work his craft. Got to my appointment and his presence was very inviting. It didn't seem like he was a new stylist I was meeting for the first time, it felt like seeing a friend who was genuinely looking forward to chatting and providing a hair makeover. I was impressed even before he started cutting my hair! He took the time to listen to how I wanted my hair and then took the time to create exactly that. I am very pleased with my haircut, I'd say hands down, the best I've gotten. I am so grateful I got to meet Blake. Not only is he a master at his craft, his authenticity is unmatched. Amazing! Brittany did my hair, I got a razor cut which requires skill. We consulted beforehand and discussed what I wanted. She did exactly what I wanted. She was professional and so fun. We discussed my color options and if I wanted to even do a color. I have to rave about master-stylist Blake, who worked wonders on an initial cut and color (by a different stylist) that did not look anything like what I had asked for, was uneven, and required a lot of work to manage. I have a LOT of wild, dry and wiry hair. It's not an easy order I know. But Blake was able to give me a layered cut that works with (not against) my natural wave. It's exactly the "wash and wear" cut I knew was possible but have had a very very hard time getting. Not being terribly talented with styling on my own (ahem at all really) and being outdoors a lot and quite active, I needed a cut I didn't have to fuss with. I'm currently in hot, humid, windy Mexico and (over a month later) my hair is looking GREAT! * I will add that a) I realize this is not the style for everyone so if you don't like it so be it . This is however exactly what I wanted so kudos to Blake for hearing and doing b) The styling in the pics - such as it is (curl method = sleep on it wet heh) was done by me a month or more post- cut. The reason I'm only giving this a 2 is the complete lack of professionalism of the salon. I made my appt with someone I selected specifically based off of who was available and reviewing their work. So when I got there and was told they moved me to someone else because of a scheduling conflict, I was shocked to not have received a courtesy phone call to offer solutions for their error. I'd love to find someone that can give me the cut and potentially grey-blending I'm looking for, but this first experience here didn't make me want to come back. I would never recommend this Salon to anyone! My daughter got her hair done by Taylor and it was not done as discussed. She charged her an extra $25 for a "blowout", which was done poorly. My daughter left the salon with fussy hair that was not flat ironed or sleek. Taylor left globs of dye on her scalp, so she had to wash out immediately when she got home (see photo). When asked about how they could make this better, Taylor replied I will not give you a refund but if you pay $74, I can put toner on your hair to make it lighter. The owner was contacted and the front desk person said she filters her messages and I needed to tell her what the call was about. I got a haircut that I wasn't super excited about at another salon in town. I booked this appointment in hopes of getting a quick fix. I left worse off than when I came in. When I got home I realized I needed to call and have them fix it. I went back and the stylist didn't appear to think anything was wrong with it which was awkward and disappointing. I work in a warehouse and a coworker made a joke about my hair getting caught up in the machine. So it definitely wasn't looking good!! The second cut looks a little better but it is still a bad haircut. There are weird long pieces and the layering is done badly. I went into this place after reading some positive reviews online. I was excited that they were using Kevin Murphy products as they are my favorite. I decided to make an appointment for a dry hair cut, and then a separate appointment for full highlights. When I called to make the appointment, I was recommended to Brittany as the person on the phone claimed she was a top tier stylist who had experience with curly hair. When I went in for my haircut, I noticed while Brittany was cutting my hair she had absolutely no idea how to cut curly hair, and I honestly felt like Supercuts would have done a better job. She butchered the back of my hair, despite my asking her to keep it longer back there and it was completely uneven. I cut my own hair usually and way better than she did, and it was nerve wrenching to watch her cut it. But lesson learned. I decided to be super clear about what I wanted for my highlights because since she didn't cut my hair well, I wanted to make sure she was talented in the highlighting department before letting her touch my hair again. Brittany assured me via phone and in person prior to my appointment that she could do what I was asking and she wanted to charge me $280 for highlights which is absolutely skyrocketed prices so I wanted to make sure she had the talent to be worth that. When my appointment came, she tried to backtrack her services and said that she would have to charge me way more like $100-150 more to do full highlights. I even had the quote in writing which states "full highlights" so I definitely got upset with Brittany because she was trying to take advantage of me and scam me. I told her that's not what you agreed to, and she said yeah but all I can do for you is partial at that quoted and offered price. This is after she already added additional $$ for extra product and extra time. Brittany kept seeking to push me into agreeing verbally with her with her wants for my hair, but I refused to comply with that bully-like behavior. So this was so unprofessional, and after what she did to my hair and lying about having the talent to cut curly hair, I realized that Brittany didn't want me as a client and cared more about her time and effort (which was very inflated in my opinion) than me as the customer, so I got up and left and refused to let her touch my hair. I would never let anyone in this salon touch my hair again, because if this is how this business is run with hiring stylist who seek to scam/lie about their talent and services and prices until you're in the seat paying them... then "wow" that's just not a business I want to support. read more

Do not waste your money here. Go somewhere else. For the past 8 years, my mother and I have been going to Salon 554 for regular hair cuts and for my mother, occasional highlights. Over the past few years, the prices have skyrocketed at this place to the point where I personally could only afford a haircut if they did only a dry cut with no wash or blow-dry. This past month, I decided that I was going to get my very first balayage, which was also my very first coloring session ever. I was scheduled with Brittany. Brittany and I seemed both on the same page with what I was going for, which was a very natural-looking balayage. I told her that I expected to not be paying no more than $400, which is extremely high already, and the total cost ended up being $580 with the tip. Someone would argue that I could be paying that much money due to the stylist's level of expertise and quality of work, but that would be far from the case. I felt completely taken advantage of. I received unblended sections with random highlights that made me not want to go outside or go to work, which are both things that I have to do. The color looked very unnatural as well, looking extremely yellow or orange where my hair had lifted. I felt like the price did not reflect what I received at all. I was ripped off and scammed. You would expect paying THAT much for a simple balayage would look phenomenal and it was not. I also got a cut during the balayage session, which took 20 minutes at a whopping $72. Oh, this place. It grieves me to give a mediocre review, because the hairdresser I had a few appointments with was truly very talented, sweet. kind, and professional. The problem is the way this salon handles appointments. First off, they want you to fill out this ridiculous questionnaire to "match" you with a hairdresser. Just a thought but how about your front desk staff know which hairdressers excel at various techniques such as color, blowout, etc., and then make a recommendation for a hairdresser. It was overkill. I don't need to marry the hairdresser, just wanted a professional hair salon treatment. After setting up the appointment with the "matched" highly-trained hair professional, I made an appointment, for which they charge a "holding fee" on your card in case you cancel the appointment. You probably have a cell phone or watch into which you put your appointments, like I do, so you don't need 10,000 text, email and automated call reminders about the appointment, which again, chill the heck out, people, that is ALSO overkill. i did this whole routine with them for a few appointments, but their pricing is actually markedly higher than other also very nice nearby salons, so with sadness, I had to move on. Again, my hairdresser was great, but the aggravation over them keeping part of your payment in advance of the appointment, the panicky obsession with reminding you relentlessly about the appointment, etc. just created an atmosphere of "it's all about the money" that turned me off. Side note, when I complained that I had received several text messages, an email AND two phone calls to remind me of an upcoming appointment, they told me they were moving to a new system that was having some hiccups. Whatever, they still keep a hold on some of your funds prior to the actual appointment. Not a fan. Plenty of other nice salons downtown and elsewhere that do not hold onto some of your funds and keep your card # on file all of the time. If their system ever gets hacked, that is a HUGE liability for your card #. read more

Chloe did my hair and my sister in laws hair for her wedding yesterday. I was blown away with Chloe's work. I brought in clip extensions, showed her a picture of what I wanted and she had my hair completed in 35 minutes. My hair stayed from 10 am till 10 pm when I took it out. My head is sensitive and she worked some amazing magic and it was comfortable all night and really only used like 7-10 pins. I waited a week to post this review because I wanted to ensure I wasn't overreacting: From 3.15.23 I had a truly awful experience with this salon today. I am an existing customer with a 2 p.m. appointment for color and cut today. The salon sends multiple texts and instructions to show up on time, preregister for the appointment, etc. This is an expensive salon that markets itself on customer service, and they use a scheduling service that instructs clients to confirm appointments via text and then several other follow-up texts until you arrive at the Salon at the appointed time. I did all of those things, but today, my stylist was running late ( understandable as these things happen), however, there is nowhere to sit and after standing around for over 25 minutes, I asked the receptionist if I should reschedule, she suggested I wait in my car and she would text me when the stylist was available. A half-hour after my appointment was scheduled, I received a text that my stylist was available and then I proceeded to the entrance, only to encounter a man smoking a cigarette and he actually exhaled on me as the I entering the premises. I did share this fact with my stylist and her mentee and then pointed out that there was a worker smoking at the entrance as we were speaking. The stylist (Katie) stated that she would inform "Sara" of the problem, as it was already communicated to me and other clients that "Sara" the owner, was buidling an apartment above the buidling. When I expressed my concerns via their company text that they used to communicate with me, the owner, stated that her living situation was "privileged information" and that "had nothing to do with us." I only knew of her personal living situation from her staff, as all of the construction noises were very disruptive in previous appointments and it was her staff that explained the circumstances. Her response to my legitimate concern was woefully inadequate and her making it be about her personal privacy, has nothing to do with her legitimate business responsibilities, which she has inexcusably neglected. read more

I was very disappointed in my experience with Salon 554. My daughter got her hair cut last week followed by a color this week by usual stylist at another salon. While getting the color the stylist commented how uneven and longer on one side her hair was. My daughter asked her to take a photo to show her and was blown away as her cut cost her $75. and she added a 25% tip on top of that. I took the photos into Salon 554 yesterday and the stylist acted as if she didn't really remember her from last week and asked me to show her a picture of her. I told them the time she was in, date, price she paid and I had the card she paid with and the stylist looked it up to confirm. The stylist did say she was sorry and could see in the photos the hair was uneven and longer underneath. I asked, as she already had it corrected by her stylist when she had it colored if they could do a refund of somesort. The stylist asked her boss/the owner Sara who came over if there was something they could do. The owner/Sara told me several times I did not give them the chance to fix it and thats what they would have done. I told her that my daughter had her stylist fix it right then and there as she was getting it colored. I told the Sara I thought $75. was expensive for what she got. The owner then told me she charges $108. for haircuts and that the stylist that did my daughters hair also does hers and is wonderful. (I understand maybe it was an off cut/off day) The owner then told me she didn't even know if that was my daughters head/hair in the picture! I was OFFENDED....and insulted by this! I would never go to a salon or ANY establishment and try to deceive them for a refund! She said she could offer me another hair cut at another time and that was all. I told her I was looking for somesort of refund and that I would not like another hair cut for some other time. The owner then just walked off back to her client. I left the salon feeling very upset and shocked as I have never had this sort of experience before. Poor customer service and I would not recommend this salon. I gave this salon three opportunities to get my hairstyle right. I have to say I think I've paid more money to get the worst hair styles I could've possibly gotten with three different stylist. It's just unconscionable to me what they charge and how terrible the hairdressers are there. I will never step foot in that place again. She messed up my color and not only did I have to come back twice, one of the times I went back she processed me 3 times in one day. My color was completely unfixable afterwards. She gave me hot roots that looked like I tried to dye my hair at home when I was 16...My color underneath was just natural with one process of professional balayage and healthy. This was one of the best experiences I have had at a salon. I called around the Salem area to find a place that specialized in curly hair and I was very disappointed with how few there was. After about 7 calls I found Salon 554 and I am so happy that they were able to fit me in the day I called. I was given instructions on how to style my hair before coming in so they could see what my hair looked like clean without product. The salon was clean, trendy décor, great product selection and welcoming. The receptionist greeted me with a smile, gave me a form to fill out to better get to know me and what I am wanting as far as hair styles and then offered me a variety of drinks. I was even given a gift card envelope full of coupons for future visits! I waited less then 5 minutes for Ellie Starr to get me and she was amazing! She sat down next to me while I showed her pictures of what I wanted. She listened to me and talked to me about my current hair regiment and what the next steps would be to get my goal hair. I never felt rushed or as if I wasn't important since I was only getting a cut and nothing else. The entire time she cut my hair she talked to me about what she was doing, why she was doing it and verified the various lengths before she cut. Because my hair is so curly she showed me what my hair would be after she cut it (about an inch shorter) and she was just so pleasant to talk to. I simply could not be happier and look forward to my future visits with Ellie. My next visit will be even more in depth and I am very excited to have Ellie work her magic. read more
