I swung by Salem's because I needed a quick meal and they were open. Their sign outside mentioned gyros and that sounded good. On hindsight, I should have parked and went inside, but was too tired and went through the drive-thru instead. Big mistake. That was so slow, people were turning their vehicles off. There is no way to exit the line, once you are in, so you are stuck. I'm not sure exactly how long I was in that line, but it was one of the longest I've experienced. I ordered an original gyro meal that comes with fries and a soda and I asked for an extra cup of tzatziki sauce. When I got home, it was still hot and fresh - definitely just made. The fries were good, had a nice seasoning on them. Unfortunately my diet soda was a regular. The tzatziki sauce was the blandest I've ever tasted. The gyro itself was generous in size and the pita was soft. Unfortunately the taste was very average. If I had not tried a Gyro before then perhaps I would've enjoyed it, but I've had very good and I've had very poor and this one truly rates average in taste. Salem's is equivalent to Tunis in Jax, but Tunis IMO has them beat. We pulled through the drive thru and ordered our food, there were cars in front of us and a nice little wait inside, so I figured everything would be great. We ordered two 5-piece wing and 20-piece shrimp meals that come with a drink but no fries for $13.49 a piece before taxes, cheese fries that were simply a small container of fries with a little nacho cheese for $4.99 before taxes and a pound of jumbo shrimp. Their shrimp was my favorite, I guess that's why my fiance only gets shrimp from here and nothing else. Their wings were super dry and lacked flavor, the cheese fries were a rip off and fries should definitely come with a meal that cost that much but instead I had to order extra. The prices don't match the taste of the food, and idk if this experience makes me want to try anything else ...We'll see I guess. read more

Went her before a WWE Event with a couple of my friends after looking for a place for a quick bite to eat. We decided to go there because of the sign gyro and subs. When we parked a panhandler approach us as soon as we got out the car. We entered the restaurant and wait for 10 mins before anyone took our order. The girl at the front counter walked away and didn't acknowledge us when we got there. We finally order and waited for our food. The tables were disgusting they were infested with files stuck to the sticky unclean tables. My friend had to use the use the restroom and noticed it was locked and a employee said go to the door I will buzz you through. It was kinda like a jail operation door system. THE FOOD I ordered the Gryo original meal. That was a mistake. The amount of white sauce was so much, when I took a bite all I was tasting is sauce, the sauce was so much that it was coming out of the bottom of the foil paper. The ingredients when I could taste it which was the meat was cold and didn't taste fresh. The tomatoes as well did not taste fresh. I could not finish the Gryo took two bites and threw it out. The fries were good. The soda machine dispenser did not look like its been clean in a while. Employees keep taking smoke breaks right in front the main entrance. first, I'm gonna give credit where credit is due so best Gyro ever!!!!! however, today I went in and ordered to go. There were several people sitting down eating and several waiting for their food and the whole time there's a lady sweeping the rugs and flinging dirt everywhere I was very glad I was taking my food home and not eating it there! but then it gets better. I'm sitting there waiting for my order listening to everyone around me talk about this lady and why she had to sweep in the middle of everyone trying to eat their food with dirt flying. and just when I think it couldn't get much worse the lady walks up to me and asked me if I could move so she could sweep under my feet. WHO DOES THAT!!! I get that maybe this is a mostly carry out type of place but you offer seats for people to sit at and eat their food maybe this is normal in Florida because I'm not from here, but I've lived many many places and I can honestly say I've never set at a restaurant with someone sweeping while trying to eat and asking me to move so she could sweep where I was. Liked the online menu so we decided to try...ordered online with plan to eat in the restaurant. When we arrived, we told them at the counter that we were there and early according to their online system. They said OK and that they'd text us when the food was ready. We arrived 12 minutes early so we sat down to wait. They NEVER called or texted us...we waited about 10 minutes after it was supposed to be ready and lo and behold...it had been sitting there in the back labeled Door Dash. So...we took it back to the table and opened it...the food by now was warm but not hot. The Gyro was good but I had to go back and ask for Tzaki sauce since the check box on the order form was screwy...no big deal...but the Gizzards were rubbery, the fried oysters OK but not worth the price of $1.00 each (18 for $21). The side salad had no dressing or silverware, had to ask for both. No salt, had to ask...nothing is available except for straws and lids for sodas out in the restaurant area..not even napkins (altho our order did come with two napkins each!)!! We also ordered two batches of the waffle sticks which were cold, with a dusting of powdered sugar....by now this is at least the fourth trip up to the counter to ask for more powered sugar, but they don't have packets, they just sprinkle on for you...claiming most folks don't like a lot of powered sugar on them. Their customer service gets a one star as every time I went back up, it was like they were doing me a favor coming to see what I wanted! Good thing they didn't have a tip jar or I think I would have asked them to tip us for eating there. This is a chain restaurant and they are opening a new one nearer to our home...but we won't be going there after this experience! Definitely not worth the $$ we spent there. read more

Update Pt2: was told to get in contact with them several days ago, I filled out the form like they said and no one got in contact with me. All we wanted was a quick bite to eat when everything was closed or already given us a hard time. We pull up to order and no one answered for a good 20 mins. We literally sat there and said hello and asked if we could order so many times, we pulled up further thinking we order at the window and the person behind us pulls up to order and immediately they answer. We pull up a little more and the person behind them gets to order immediately as well. We get to the window and my boyfriend try's to tell the employee at the window that we couldn't order because no one answered and she rolls her eyes with an attitude and closes the window on him while he's in mid sentence and then proceeds to Finish putting someone's order together and then finally opens the window and takes our order with a fat attitude and tells us to park in a certain spot. We sat in the spot for another good 20 or so mins while car after car left from the drive through and no one came out to give us our food and the same rude employee finally walks out and pushed the food in the window and says have a goodnight and walks away. First and last time going to this location. Don't recommend what so ever. Update: the food was awful. Mozzarella sticks were soggy and oily, fries were mushy and bland, boneless wings aren't worth the money. The only thing worth the money was the grilled shrimp in the shrimp bowl surprisingly. Salem's is great, not sure why it's getting such a bad rap on yelp (I blame main stream mediamyself) but Salem's is my go to restaurant & it's great if you know what to order, but before I tell you what to order first let me tell you this, in Florida there is a Greek fishing village in Tarpon Springs were you can find very authentic Greek food & for most non-greeks (of course) the go to item is the gyro of which I've ordered plenty of & Salem's gyros are on par with most of those Tarpon Springs cafes (I'm sure somehaughtyaristocratwould argue with me) but I must say Salem's is a good place to pick up a gyro when east of Tarpon. That's my long way of saying order a gyro the next time your at Salem's next I'd say the fried shrimps theirscrumdiddlyumptiousyou can get a pound of fried shrimps for like $9.99 a dollar more and make 'em jumbo shrimps. On the other hand avoid hot wings their very saucy & they leave the tips on them. I'll will agree that the service is strongly lacking not that they screw up orders or anything just that the employees are pretty miserable so don't take it personally if they seem a little short with you it's probably just cause they live in Florida, so to summarize avoid the wings and pick yourself up a gyro or some shrimps (the cakes slices are pretty good too) & the employees are just a little upset about Health Care Reform pasting, but it's all good folks. Finally got to try this place after hearing so much about it from friends and locals. Sadly it was very mediocre. I was super excited because they have fried gizzards which pretty much no other places in Lakeland has. The gizzards were super tough and very greasy. I ended up getting an upset stomach from how greasy they were. The fries were pretty good. I liked the seasoning but wished they were seasoned evenly. I will defiantly try it again to give it a second chance but won't be back for the gizzards. I want to try their fish and hope it will be better. The service was also not the best. I went through the drive through. They handed me my food and receipt without a word and walked away from the window. They forgot my sauce so I waited to see if they'd comeback and no one did. I had to honk (which I hate because it's rude) but it was the only way to get their attention. And even then I had to honk 3 times before anyone came over. I really like Salem's, but I can totally believe the other Yelpers who say the service leaves a lot to be desired. I find that when I go there, if I am overly nice to them, I get very good service and even sometimes a "have a nice evening." I consider that mission accomplished. Just go into it understanding that these are fast food employees who have to deal with the picky and hungry public all day and make pennies doing it. As far as Salem's goes, the gyro meat is excellent. I don't order anything there other than 1 pound of gyro meat. For people who are low-carb folks, this place is a nice port in the storm if you are pinched on time and just want some meat to eat. The tiziaki sauce is very good and fresh made every day. The place inside is pretty clean, not completely clean, but pretty clean. I know they've been dinged a few times on their health inspections when my local newspaper publishes the health inspection reports. I'm not surprised. The real knock against Salem's is the drive-thru. You had better plan on spending a good 10 minutes in the drive thru when you go even if there are no other cars there. If there are other cars, expect it to be longer. They operate at one speed at Salem's and it ain't fast. This isn't a fast food joint per se, it is a food joint. Fast isn't part of your experience at Salem's. Anytime a restaurant has signs at the drive-thru advertising that they offer their drive thru customers free wi-fi while they wait, there's a reason for that. I think you're almost always faster to go in to get your order. Salem's is also in a less than savory part of town, so if you stop by at night, watch yourself and pay attention to your surroundings. They're open very late. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 for the home team advantage. read more

I ordered a grilled chicken Caesar salad, and the lettuce was not cleaned thoroughly. There was still sand/dirt in the creases of the lettuce. I had to throw the entire salad away. Also, they give you a huuuge bowl of lettuce and a small amount of meat, cheese, croutons, tomatoes etc. If you're gonna give that much lettuce then provide more toppings. Located at the corner of 98 and 92, I always thought this place was a gas station/convenience store "booth" within. It is neither--it is a free-standing restaurant that specialized in fried, fried, fried. The place was packed with city workers and hospital employees. I was surprised. The two clerks (one at drive-thru window) were polite and efficient. Their half of the store is raised so the are above you--kinda weird, but perhaps a security measure for a bad area? I ordered a hamburger (2.99) that she wanted to put in a combo meal. I asked if a small salad could be substitute for fries. yep. This and the Diet Coke cost me $6.41. I waited til they called me by name. The drink is in styrofoam, the meal comes on a paper plate. It looked like a great burger and was advertised as a "black angus burger" but it tasted of freezer burn with little other flavor. Bun was crunchy, perhaps buttered & toasted. I prefer squishy. Catsup and mustard flavor were best part of the sandwich. The salad was rather large for a side--lettuce, tomato, onion, cuke, and they had French dressing. Parts of it were very fresh but there was some dried lettuce on the container and limp wet (slimey) lettuce within the mix. I ate about half and called it "done". Most were ordering the fried things--fried shrimp, fried calamari, fried fish, fries. They all seemed to be enjoying their meals. But fried food lovers might rate this place higher. They also had subs, gyros and several large salads. They had a cold case full of 5-6 desserts, cakes, cheesecakes, baklava all priced $2-3. As for me, I don't need to return. I always get the burger combo or the boneless buffalo wings combo. Both are soooo good and fulfills my fast food craving without the sluggish feeling after. The portions are generous. Staff has always been really friendly and eventually remember you after a few visits. New faces or not they're always pleasant. Black Beans and Yellow Rice for the Fries. When I requested this substitution, the young lady appeared as if she had no idea what I was talking about - I repeated it.. a little louder (there were other customers talking around us). She kind of crinkled her brow as if she still didn't understand and then shook her head up and down as she asked me if it was here/to go, and my name. When I got my order, there was a large bag of (unwanted) fries in it. I didn't say a word.. just pulled it out and threw it in the waste can as she watched. Then I left.
