We popped into Salado Glassworks on a whim yesterday as we are visiting from North Carolina and staying with friends about an hour away from this glass studio. It is such a cool place! They sell beautiful blown glass gift items and they offer sessions that you can book to blow your own glass ornament or bowl. The studio has some bleachers for people to sit on to watch the glass blowers in action. The people working in the glass blowing studio were super nice and one guy even talked us through what they were doing. They heat the glass to over 2,000 degrees to work with it! Amazing! Definitely worth stopping in and a great place for gift items. You can also commission them to make custom pieces. The friend we are visiting knows someone who had them make a bathroom sink for their home. read more

We had such an amazing time doing the Valentine's Day glass workshop. Getting to actually create our own cups and be fully hands-on made the experience so fun and memorable. The staff was incredibly patient, encouraging, and knowledgeable, walking us through each step and letting us participate as much as possible. wow we booked online a "glassblowing" class for a pumpkin. We got there to do the class but was very disappointed to go thru the process for what they called a "3year old" experience. I talked to the owner and was told that I should have read the fine print. so disappointed in the owners response. He said it's for a 3 year old. I was there on Sunday December 1st to blow ornaments. While the other people in my group had a great experience, mine did not live up to expectations. When I arrived for my glass-blowing session, the lady who was helping me didn't really make an effort to explain the process or ask for any input on what colors or designs I wanted. Instead, she just took the reins and did her own thing, which felt pretty impersonal. I wanted an ornament that had blue forward with a bit of white and now I am getting a white ornament with a tiny bit of blue so it's a bit irritating not getting what I wanted. I get that they're the experts, but some level of communication would have been nice, especially when I'm paying to be part of the creative process read more

We went here for custom glass blown pumpkins that they were doing during an event. The glass blowers were very open to the process and explained everything before we did it. My pumpkin turned out great and for the experience and what we took home it was worth it. Definitely going to go here again in the future. This place is pretty cool. Not only do they make all the glass items here, but you can actually go into their workspace and watch the artists blowing the glass and making all the items. The shopkeeper is nice and there is definitely a bonus in petting the cat who is a total ham and loves attention. I picked up a cute peppermint necklace. Parking is a bit limited but the town is very small so it's easy enough to walk to if needed. read more

We went for their blow your own Christmas ornaments last weekend. One of my kids got a great glassblowing experience, and he was given the correct ornament afterwards. My other son got a very rude glassblowing "expert" who is unfortunately the owner of the shop. The owner then mixed up or lost my son's ornament and tried giving us someone else's ornament. My son is colorblind and picked colors that are pretty to him- red, orange, and lime green. When we were given a red and white ornament we knew there was obviously a mistake. After THREE trips back to pick up ornaments, I think we have the correct ornament. When I told the receptionist today that I was unhappy she just told me that most of the time they get it right. Not the customer service I expected for their mistake when I paid them $140 for 2 glass ornaments. read more

Absolutely fascinating is what Salado Glassworks is. My first visit was a few months ago. My wife, myself and our 3 kids walked in and were immediately greeted by Gail and offered a seat in the back where the magic happens. We watched in amazement as Gail created a vase out of 2000+ degree molten glass. Needless to say, we walked out with our very own piece of art vase and an incredible beer mug that every man should own. This place is so amazing and the artist is so awesome and nice. He invited us to watch him make a bowl and it was so much fun. The bowl was so beautiful that I bought it from him. This is a cool place. I came here before Christmas to make an ornament. You pick out the colors, the order they'll be applied (yes, this makes a difference), then one of the guys creates it while explaining the process and you blow in the tube to fill it up with air. On Christmas Day, my mom gave me my ornament on a stand. When I visited, they had not created stands yet, but one of the guys (A-aron?) is a metal worker and came up with a simple unpolished stand design that will work well and keep it stable as I try to keep my cats from noticing a new fragile swinging fun-thing in the house. If you are doing a Blow-Your-Own seasonal item (ex: Christmas ornament, Easter Egg, or Fall pumpkin), book your time a week in advance; They fill up fast. Prices have been increasing with popularity, which is especially noticeable on the bowls. If you look through several, you can find a few that seem to be at older pricing for a better deal. This year was my 2nd time to do the blow your own ornament. I was disappointed that you could only pick from a small assortment of colors. Supposedly the colors offered change daily. One of the colors that I really wanted wasn't being offered today. So I had to pick something else that I didn't really want. Then after I made my selection a lady behind me had the same issue with wanting a color, but they made an exception and let her chose a color that wasn't being offered today. Very disappointing and unfair. I strongly feel that if you are paying to make the ornaments that you should be able to pick from all the colors on any day or be told when you are booking what the color selection will be available. read more
