This review is based on service. Could've been a great little spot to pick up sushi after running errands. However one thing I'm never going to tolerate when spending my money is rudeness. We walked in, was not greeted, first time in, not sure how it works. Asked if we should just sit anywhere. The man on the register gruffly said "you order and pay first." We picked up the menus and began to identify selections. Once decided we began ordering. My daughter started with a habachi order and simply asked if noodles were an option? He rudely responded it's $3 extra, we were seeking clarity if it was a replacement for the rice. He was so annoyed that we were even inquiring. I had to stop him in the midst of his rudeness, I explained we were first time customers stopping by after errands, thought we'd give you all a try and that the rudeness was unnecessary. He then asked... "I'm being rude?" I replied yes we were simply seeking clarity, he then explained the noodles were additional on the side. I said thank you for the clarity. We continued ordering, 3 rolls, I don't eat imitation crab I asked it be removed on one role. He responded as if it was a huge ask. We set for the next 25 mins and realized this is a pickup spot primarily DoorDash. They don't have the time or patience for walk-in customers. Business owners must understand customers can spend their money anywhere and when the choice is their business they should treat every customer with respect. Great little hole in the wall sport with amazing fresh made sushi . Been there 2wice with 2 girlfriends and absolutely LOVE everything we all got. The lunch special is pretty great, soup or salad and 2 or 3 traditional rolls. Avocado + salmon rolls are my fave along with miso soup and eel sauce. The food was freshly prepared really quickly and right there a few feet from you. The veggie egg rolls are also amazing (always hot and crispy). Tried the lunch special and it didn't disappoint! First of all, the lunch special is available from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM EVERYDAY. Not just weekdays. We ordered takeout on Sunday April 24, 2022. Both of us ordered the lunch special 3 rolls which comes with either a miso soup or a house salad for $11.99- it's quite a deal!! I had the shrimp tempura, Philadelphia (smoked salmon, cream cheese, avocado), and the tuna avocado. Each was delicious. The only thing I forgot to ask for was ponzu (I love their ponzu), but I had some bottle brand at home, so not a big deal. He had the yellowtail scallion (which was oddly tiny), the Boston (salmon, cucumber, avocado), and the tuna avocado. He enjoyed them all. The miso soup was good/fine; nothing particularly special. As for the house salad- it's essentially lettuce with a few shreds of carrots and a creamy dressing. I'll prob order miso every time. Then we shared the 2022 roll. This has cilantro over white tuna and regular tuna atop a roll with cucumber, crunch, and jalapeño inside. It comes with a chili oil ponzu sauce. I prefer using ponzu that doesn't have chili oil. This place is very good. I ordered steak with noodles. It tasted very similar to a Japanese steak house at only $12.00. Will ask for more garlic butter next time. I really like the food here. The issue is with the service. The last time we ordered I did pick up and waited a half hour longer than they said. I understood though bc I work in the food industry and they were busy. This time i ordered over two hours ago...still no food. They said it would be an hour. I live 5 minutes away but am drinking and figured I will pay the delivery bc its not worth it. Called 40 minutes ago... told the food was on the way. Still no food. Delivery driver called 15 minutes ago. I explained how to get to our house and that we were 5 minutes away (with traffic) still no food. Hopefully I'll get my cold ass noodles within the next 10-15 minutes. That was $118 order and they will not be getting my business or my 20% tip again. A typical 'hole in the wall', but of course in the best way! Out in Chicago for a weekend get away and happened upon Sakura online while searching for food options. What a great choice! It's not a huge, multi-table affair, just a few booths and mostly focused towards take out, but oh man, the food is SO GOOD. My husband and I both had hibachi, though his was steak and mine was shrimp&scallops. So flavorful, different from what we're used to at home, which is always great to experience. Soup stayed near boiling the whole time (in a take out container, which fair in this climate). Salad was refreshing. We also ordered pan fried gyoza, a favorite, and they were delightfully crispy. Crab Rangoon 4/5 Plenty of filling, love that they'll toss a few in for free with a big order so that's awesome! Red sauce is too sweet for me. Tuna Tataki 4/5 Great presentation, big portion, sliced evenly, and the tuna itself was good but the sauce was too sticky and not amazing enough for me to order it all the time. I think something more sharp like a ponzu with some salt that penetrated the fish would be better. Sushi: Sashimi 5/5 This is where you truly see value in what you order. The sashimi portion is huge and presented gorgeously. If you prefer sashimi to nigiri this is 100% going to be your new favorite spot for getting a lot of sliced fish for not a lot of money. Boston Roll 5/5 Lovely version of what other places call Ebiku maki. Just love the dollop of mayo on the roll. It's a really good combination. Crazy Tuna 5/5 Great! I love taking the tuna off and dipping it in soy sauce separately only to enjoy the roll on its own. The spicy sauce on top is very good! Spicy 2-in-1 5/5 You will love this if you can't get enough of the fish-mayo-panko type of sushi. It's loaded with both spicy tuna and avocado on the inside & then spicy salmon on top. They are super generous on filling and it has a great texture. Hibachi 5/5 Lunch special is a very good value. I find it worth it to get the golden sauce and hibachi noodles for extra charge. My partner and I were able to eat from ONE chicken and steak combo for 2 days straight and it was the best hibachi I have ever eaten. Super impressed. Love the white sauce that comes with the chicken-- addictive! Miso Soup 1/5 The only thing I'm not crazy about from here. It is very watery and lacks seasoning. It's crying for salt and depth. Lots of seaweed & the tofu is chopped really small. Their clear soup is much, much better Okay I did my best to review all the items I've had thus far. I eat at higher end places frequently and I put Sakura right at the top of my list (#1) for Japanese in the suburbs. I honestly have not had better. This little spot has earned another star. My order is always perfect, even the little extras I request; don't even have to check, and always ready when I arrive. All the special maki rolls are scrumptious, generously sized, SUPER fresh, and never more rice than fish & filling like some places. The tuna avocado ball appetizer is yummy & enough for 2 meals (when I can stop myself from nibbling it all in one; the shrimp & veg tempura is perfect. To start I had the volcano rolls with vegetable rice and crab rangoon I just want to know how does this place have such good reviews? My son and I were craving sushi and didn't feel like taking the drive to Aurora for shintos so we settled here because of the reviews. To start the crab Rangoon was like rubber and I had to chow down on it as if I was chewing gum the sauce it was served with was overly sweet with an excessive amount of garlic. The "sushi" tasted like it was made with canned fish and drizzled with store bought spicy mayo and drenched in oil the rice was basic seems as if it was boiled first then doused in oil to give a fried rice take with frozen vegetables. The food is absolutely delicious, the presentation is very good, and the prices are very reasonable! The soup tasted very good, the salad was mostly lettuce (could use a few more veggies), but the salad dressing was very tasty.
