My son really enjoy his week of summer camp. Wish I could afford to send him for more camps.

The George Gervin Academy is a local charter school founded by former Spurs player and NBA hall of…read morefame player George Gervin, hence the name, and is run by an administration consisting heavily of his family- his sister Barbara Hawkins is the superintendent, and sister Frances is the CFO. Originally opened as a drop out prevention high school, the school has since expanded to serve PK-12th grades, spanning early childhood, middle school (mostly housed at a separate location) and high school. In addition to core classes, the school has a sports program including basketball, cheer, and soccer teams, and has a new gym facility that hosts basketball and volleyball tournaments. Teachers here, as at other schools, are of all varieties of background and education levels- quite a few possess Masters degrees or in the process of obtaining them, and all staff participate in extensive professional development and training. However, some teachers are better skilled and more experienced than others and it shows in the education and support they provide their students. Don't take this as a mark against this school in particular- you'll find that at any school. Recently, in addition to improving teacher skills through increased professional development and support, the school has also expanded course offerings and electives, particularly at the high school level. All students receive weekly gym and music classes, and they have also recently started an art program. High school students are able to take Spanish or German, and also have a Spurs Silver Dancer as a fine arts/dance teacher as well. Minor things that count against this school is the lack of transparency from administration, inconsistencies between classes and grade levels, and the fact that most grade levels only have one or two teachers- if you have difficulties, there really isn't often an alternative. However, on the bright side, classes are relatively small and the student body is small and feels more like a large family.

The admin yells at teachers for taking time off but admin is absent far more often. The Academy's CEOs don't care about their staff, instead they focus on attendance to get more monies from the government, while ignoring the complaints of teachers.

But all the time the school administration has been there for us. My kids have made amazing friends. The school is safe and that's what I love the most about it.

Not somewhere you want your kids to be. They say they're "strict"... actually, more racist and…read moreextremely unprofessional. The Dean is almost impossible to get ahold of. The front office staff are all very unhappy and unwelcoming all hours of the day. If your child likes books, good luck... their library is still not even completed, so there is nowhere for you children to check out books or do any kind of research for any tests, projects, essays, etc... some of the teachers are uneducated and are only there because the school has no one else. The school counselor looks like one of their own students... she knows nothing about her "profession". She is new to Texas and has no connections to any kind of help or assistance outside of her office or the school. If you think this school will help your advanced child's education, you'll be shocked. The bullying is beyond ridiculous and is never handled, unless your child is not 100% Caucasian(no offense). I am not here to leave a negative review out of spite. I am here to let you all know that THIS SCHOOL SHOULD NOT BE LICENSED TO TEACH ANY CHILD. I have contacted the local news media and I think they will be investigating many issues that have been addressed by many parents. With nothing but proof and evidence, I promise this is something you all deserve to be aware of. Do your research, you'll find my review to be very valuable.

They have a lot of hands on activities the kids get to do and expect lots of fun arts and crafts being sent home. My kid loves it, and always talks about how much fun she had with Terri and Katie and Lourdes each time she comes home from school. All the teachers and staff there are amazing and keep you up to informed. Katie is one of my favorites, and keep us "in the know" with out us even asking. Wendy and Jo do an amazing job behind the scenes. I love that I get weekly emails about everything that's going on at the school and her class. If you are looking for a great school to call home ACORN is the place! They do have a wait list and going on a tour is a must. I recommend going online and check dates for the open house or call.

Bottom line, this school is different, and you are impacted by that as soon as you pull into the driveway. From the playground to the entrance, children are encouraged to play with their hands and truly experience learning. I just had an opportunity to attend a day fully dedicated to father and child (this was one of the most special events)! Thanks to the school and it's leaders/teachers who are so passionate about our children.
