The George Gervin Academy is a local charter school founded by former Spurs player and NBA hall of fame player George Gervin, hence the name, and is run by an administration consisting heavily of his family- his sister Barbara Hawkins is the superintendent, and sister Frances is the CFO. Originally opened as a drop out prevention high school, the school has since expanded to serve PK-12th grades, spanning early childhood, middle school (mostly housed at a separate location) and high school. In addition to core classes, the school has a sports program including basketball, cheer, and soccer teams, and has a new gym facility that hosts basketball and volleyball tournaments. Teachers here, as at other schools, are of all varieties of background and education levels- quite a few possess Masters degrees or in the process of obtaining them, and all staff participate in extensive professional development and training. However, some teachers are better skilled and more experienced than others and it shows in the education and support they provide their students. Don't take this as a mark against this school in particular- you'll find that at any school. Recently, in addition to improving teacher skills through increased professional development and support, the school has also expanded course offerings and electives, particularly at the high school level. All students receive weekly gym and music classes, and they have also recently started an art program. High school students are able to take Spanish or German, and also have a Spurs Silver Dancer as a fine arts/dance teacher as well. Minor things that count against this school is the lack of transparency from administration, inconsistencies between classes and grade levels, and the fact that most grade levels only have one or two teachers- if you have difficulties, there really isn't often an alternative. Worst school EVER! Leadership is horrible. If they're at work they're either unavailable or busy writing everyone up for not adhering to their teaching practices instead of best teaching methods utilized by individual teachers. The admin yells at teachers for taking time off but admin is absent far more often. The Academy's CEOs don't care about their staff, instead they focus on attendance to get more monies from the government, while ignoring the complaints of teachers. read more

The district has come along way! We are anticipating going into the new year fully staffed and with new state approved curriculum for math reading and science. My son attended this school last year for 1st grade. He is a very picky eater so I pack him lunch. It's usually a lunch-able some chips and a juice. Everyday when I pick him up I ask him did he eat and how was school. One day I picked him up and he told me he did not eat today and he was hungry. Then he told me that he's teacher did not let him eat his lunch. Because she said it's "not healthy". I'm was in shock and couldn't believe that my son wasn't able to eat like everyone else because he is a bit chubby than other kids. I am so angry! I spoke to the principal at the time which was Mr. Forest. And felt like I got no where. What else can I do? read more

We rented the George Gervin Gym ystrdy for a surprise graduation party for my son. Everyone loved it! The staff was very friendly & helpful. The gym is clean, spacious and great AC.
