When we arrived there were people welcoming him to his new community which relieved some of his nervousness. He has only been there a little over a month. In his former facility he sat in his room 24/7. Within a week at Capitol Ridge he was going to the dining room for dinner, making friends, and even went on a trip for the very first time. The food is second to none. The servers are just great. I will always remember my friend saying to me "I had meat for lunch and it was real meat and a good size piece at that." or "I had ribs and corn and was it good." The staff is also great. Most facilities have mass once a month if they are fortunate but at Capitol Ridge there is a weekly mass. Spiritual care is important to me because all of us -- regardless of our faith -- are spiritual beings and yet many facilities forget the spiritual needs of their people. It's difficult to attend church weekly and then have it taken away from you and only go once a month if a facility is fortunate. The administrator has a genuine concern for her residents as well as being approachable by family members. The staff is second to none. My friend will always miss his home but at least at Capitol Ridge he is happy and knows that he is being cared for by compassionate, qualified, and caring people. Capitol Ridge is now his home away from home.

As far as housekeeping every time I am here someone is cleaning something. The place is immaculate. It's as beautiful as a hotel with an old country feel. I've been told by residents that reside here that the food is fantastic, and I would have to say they're right. If you come here around any mealtimes you will be greeted by tempting aromas. They're always doing something to keep they're residents engaged. There's always activities, outings, and people coming to perform. They even have someone bring baby goats. But the most important thing is people are happy here and they feel safe.

We finally found an assisted living place for our Mom. The admissions person was wonderful and…read moreexplained the levels of care and gave us a tour of several rooms. The great thing is if Mom needs more or less care, she does not have to move! The staff just conforms to her needs, so her room is her room. She has resided at Smithfield Woods for over a year, and we are very happy with the care she is receiving. The place is more than clean- it looks like a hotel or condo and has modern rooms with spacious bathrooms/walk in showers, kitchenettes, A/C, beautiful windows/views, several dining rooms and common areas/reading areas, activities daily, and a full dining room for 3 meals a day. For an extra fee, they have a med tech who will give our Mom her meds (she has too many to keep track of herself). They always have one or more RN's on staff, a maintenance person if you need help putting up a picture, and activity staff who check on the residents frequently during the day to encourage socialization. They have cleaning service who keep our Mom's room neat and clutter-free since she uses a walker/wheelchair. The office is always open during the day if you have a question. Now I am particular about floors/smells, and being a nurse myself, I appreciate the cleanliness and fresh-smelling air of the hallway and common areas. The aides are so friendly and let me say- we all know how understaffed this whole state is when it comes to nursing facilities! The aides go above and beyond for their residents here. Our Mom is safe here and that is the most important! I tell many friends and family about Smithfield Woods for their elderly loved ones. Hopefully many more people will go take a tour and see how nice it is here!

The Highlands is an assisted-living facility populated by two groups of residents: a…read morehigh-functioning group, some of whom may need medical/personal. attention at some point but are in most respects independent, a wide range of less capable residents who eat most meals in the dining room, and a group who eat and stay in their rooms most of the time. There is also a large group in a segregated floor for those with dementia and memory loss. Very few if any of the residents are intellectually intact. The staff are polite and competent, some are excellent and dedicated, but turnover and absenteeism are high. Assisted showers are possible but the standard is at most once a week. The food is not the worst institutional fare I have ever had, but when combined with poor service and a toxic social atmosphere in the dining room the result is very poor. There have been at least a dozen cooks in my time, and none of them were capable of cooking a Brussels sprout . Waitstaff were nice but oblivious and untrained. The facility is clean and quiet .

I immediately felt reassured that our mother was in good hands. I am beyond touched by her ability to embrace and welcome everyone who approaches her, including the residents, as well as, visitors and staff. She is truly a beautiful and pure soul! Unfortunately, their lack of knowledge of how to treat my chronic condition and how to recognize a new condition was overshadowed by their perception of how they felt my care should be administered. As an RN myself, I was able to participate in my plan of care but was not only not listened to, but belittled. And, when I asked to speak to the DON several times I was only provided with visits from the social worker to address my concerns. The final straw was a doctor's order to administer a medication to me that was given without prudent nursing assessment and care because of their preconceived opinion of my needs and care and unfortunately caused them to overlook a new condition that I had asked them to check and placed me in a very intolerable and painful state because they thought they knew better than me. I will NEVER trust them with my care again. I am able to advocate for my care - I fear for those who can't.
