Updating my review. Service got a bit better after I posted my last review but that might also be…read morebecause I started deliberately paying in cash to avoid the battle at the cash register over my "suspicious" debit card that just happened to have my picture on the front. Lots of items here that I wish were available in the US. The whole Heston Blumenthal range was really interesting..I especially enjoyed the curried popcorn and the prawn cocktail with a hint of vodka in the sauce (too much mayo though). The bakery had these awesome rose geranium/cherry flavored cupcakes. We frequently purchased a Waitrose brand treacle tart with some clotted cream to go with. The Rachels organic yogurt in Ginger was amazing. And don't get me started on the premade Indian food. To be honest, we went to 2 indian restaurants in Wokingham and the ready made meals at Waitrose tasted more like authentic Indian food than either of the restaurants we tried. You can also go and have tea or cakes in the area next to the bakery. Lots of stay at home mums with squirmy children but the cream tea was nice and under 4 pounds.

Great chain of supermarkets on the higher end side of pricing. They have a nice selection of…read moreindividually wrapped & prepared foods ready to cook along with small bottles of wine. I wish the US would have more stores that sell less quantity like this, but the cost savings would likely be lost with the extra packaging required. the staff is a great younger looking group of guys and gals that were very helpful and nice.

Another massive mega-store, on the same order as a Wal-Mart Supercenter like in the States. Except…read morethis store is 90% food and groceries, but only 10% clothes and electronics. Wider selection of clothes and other non-food items than the Tesco I shopped last week, including a small shoe department (boots!) and an aisle of kitchen items (drip coffee maker for £7!). With this shop, I think I've fully kitted out my flat. Prices are in line with what I expected, as Asda is "part of the Wal-Mart family". Slightly lower than Tesco and much lower than the urban Sainsbury's in Reading Town Centre. It's a huge store and it's very easy to spend a couple of hours in here without realizing it. One annoying thing - Bill, the greeter, kept announcing on the overhead how much he'd love to help and kept pointing out the specials and hours. Between that and the Asda advertisements (mostly Christmas specials and electronics items), there was barely a moment of peace. I have no idea how Brits got by before these mega-stores came to be. This store literally sells every type of food and in many different varieties. Lots of ready-to-cook and ready-to-serve items in many departments. Compared to the States, the produce section was much larger. It was also a little odd (as an American) seeing a massive aisle of spirits (whiskey, scotch, etc.). In many places back home, these are in a separate section or even a different store to keep them away from the kiddies. Loads of parking and a petrol station, Asda is also served by the Reading bus lines - numbers 21 and 22 stop right in front after a ~20 minute ride from the depot. I snapped and posted pictures for you!

Our nearest Supermarket in a nice airy Mall with other shops including jewelers, shoeshops,…read moreopticians, estate agents, cleaners and cafes. It is a busy area and yet one can get ones shopping done quickly because there are so many check outs. Items are easy to find and are tastfully displayed. Good parking and also a large section where one can deposit old wine bottles. There used to be a series of small banks in this mall but there are only ATMs left. There is also a shop selling wheelchairs and mobility cars etc Across the road is a small Marks and Spencers which we use for variety .

The thing I really love about Sainsburys is that it keeps the riff raff out of Waitrose…read more This branch was built in late 2011 and features everything you could ask for in a supermarket. Eco friendly grass covered roof? Check Biodiversity area in the corner of the car park? Check Parking space to charge your electric car? Check It's a tree huggers dream yet it still manages to draw in the most ardent of ozone depleters such as myself. There's nothing I enjoy more than ditching the short walk from my house to the store in favour of cruising down there in my behemoth of an automobile with the engine so cold that instead of measuring the fuel consumption in miles per gallon you have to use gallons per mile. Once you arrive you are greeted to a clean and well laid out store with all the usual gubbins you would expect from a supermarket but with prices so high that all but the most lavish of grocery shoppers will have been scared away. However, you must not be afraid. Pay their inflated prices I tell you, pay them! As you walk around scanning your shopping and watching the total surpass the amount you paid for your first house take a moment to soak up the ambiance. Revel in the fact that you aren't constantly stopping behind shoppers who have shunned Facebook and instead choose to conduct their social networking on aisle 5 while creating a blockade with their trolleys. Rejoice at the relative emptyness of the store, you aren't an extra in a remake of 28 days later. No, you have merely escaped from the clutches of Tesco and found a better way and it is worth every penny.
