Van Bortel Aircraft

I recently took my family to Van Bortel Aircraft at Arlington Municipal Airport to see a couple of…read moreairplanes I had been eyeing online. I couldn't believe how lovely and pristine the showroom full of airplanes was. The staff and the salesman helping me out were very friendly! They educated me on the types of aircraft that could potentially fit my needs and provided me with financing options.

In the '90s,I was inspecting my 1960 C172 prior to a trip into the mountains of Idaho and Montana (from California). I discovered one of the landing gear U-bolts was broken. It corroded at the bend in the bolt and eventually gave up the ghost. I looked online for the bolt without success, but I had the Cessna part number and called Van Bortel, based on reputation, alone. I was told the bolts were i stock. I asked for ands paid for Fedex priority overnight with Saturday delivery, because we wanted to get going. As long as I didn't have the bolts (I elected to replace both at the same time) I was AOG, and nobody wants that. Saturday came and was just about gone, and I didn't have my delivery from Fedex. I called the business, hoping against hope someone would answer the phone. As it happened, the maintenance engineer answered the phone. I explained the situation and that guy said he'd call the owner. About 30 minutes later, i get a call from Howard Van Bortel, explaining someone had spaced out on my bolts and they were sitting on the shipping desk. Mr. Van Bortel boxed up those bolts himself, and put them on an American Airlines flight from DFW to OAK. He told me to go to the freight desk and sure enough, there were my bolts. I installed them the next morning, got my IA to sign off my work and we departed a day late, but secure in the knowledge our landing geat was again, intact. Now keep in mind, this was about a $100 sale. It wasn't high-dollar in any way and I really didn't expect the bolts until Tuesday or Wednesday (and I was very close to rage over this nonsense) but Mr. Van Bortel came through in such a huge way, I sent them a letter praising the business. I wouldn't be surprised if it's not still up on the wall, but i wanted to re-write and update the story a bit, for folks. Now I see some things about aircraft here in the reviews and I cannot address those issues as i was never a potential aircraft buyer. But for a penny-ante customer like me, they came through like the cavalry. I lost my flying privilege 20 years ago (medical) but I alway remembered how well they took care of me, and wanted to share. Hi Mr. Van Bortel.

My experience is basically the same as the others. I too had a model made for my husband when it…read morewas Anderson Enterprises of an airplane he owned 17 yrs ago. It was one of and still is the best gifts I've given him. And the process was painless, done in 6 weeks and it was perfect. So he bought another plane last spring and in August I decided I'd have a model of this one made as well for him as a Christmas present. I gathered all the information including the exact number of the paint colors which I got off a metal plate on the plane, then called the airplane manufacturer myself so the color would be exact. I had all this submitted by the 3rd wk of August. 4 solid months to get it in time for Christmas. Knowing how badly I didn't want him to get the plane to begin with, I thought it would be a really endearing gesture given how things have transpired between us to where they are now.. Rose Griffin was the person I was dealing with and she gave me all the promises and reassurances that it would be done by Christmas. I told her it was pertinent given our situation and that it had significant meaning that it was just not a gift, but an extraordinary gift. So I'd call every few wks to check on things and Rose kept reassuring me it was almost done. Then it got to be nov and I wasn't hearing anything so I called nov 21st and she said mid dec. so on dec 15th I called several times throughout day and got no answer. Then wrote several emails the next day and after 4 days she wrote bk and told me she'd finally gotten ahold of the factory in the Philippines where it was being made and it was almost done. Anyway, I emailed her on dec 22 and she didn't get bk til the next day and said the shipment had missed its deadline and wouldn't be to the states til mom, AFTER Christmas. Since the model would go to her, in Dallas first then she'd have to ship it me after that would make it being delivered a wk late. I was so angry and heartbroken by this time. I had paid them in full upfront and to have this happen? So I told her to have my model be pulled from the shipment and to use the "next flight service" fedex offers where they put a pkg on the next flight available and it's already cleared customs b/c they do it before it leaves country of origin. So she said she would do that making it get to me Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve came and went and no model. I had came up with a really good backup plan that would still have made it blow his mind. BUT after writing more than a few frustrated emails she finally got bk to me. First the model didn't get pulled from the rest of the shipment and was sent to her, then she launched into a rant making me out to be the cause of the problem. Threatening to just scrap the model and give me my money bk. I let her off the hook and told her I'd pay to ship it overnight. But after not hearing bk, I cancelled the order the next afternoon. The deal breaker was actually that the colors were so off but I wasn't going to make it an issue thinking my husband wouldn't care. It's just be the fact I did it and we could always get it repainted. Bottom line, there is no competency, business sense or professionalism running this company. Rose lashed out at me in one email saying how I had no idea how hard she'd worked to get my model to me, but I wasn't her only customer and couldn't answer all my emails right when I wrote them! She also said how she'd already spent twice what I paid for the model trying to get it through "international express" whatever that means. This is a perfect example where a person turns their incompetency around and projects it onto you. I suggested at one point they hire some extra help, but it's most probable that they don't have the funds to pay someone else given they're losing business quicker than they can get it. And I wouldn't put any stars if it were possible Soooooo, now I'm back at square one! Thanks bunches Rose This is the other review from reviews.birseye.com I'm posting this b/c it's public and to save the next guy trouble. Michelle gave them 1 star Apr 06, 2015 Unreliable company. As a Christmas present, I placed an order in August 2014 with expectations that it would arrive well before December 25th. It literally arrived days before Christmas, but only after several calls to ensure it was being delivered on time. After a very stressful waiting period, it was then determined the model did not come in as ordered. The model was to have customization, whereas the model we received was a standard and basic replica of the airplane - not to my specifications. I was assured that a replacement would be forthcoming. It's now March and still no response or resolution by the company even after several emails asking what is going on.. It should be noted that when this company was Anderson Models, their product was spot on. We had ordered an airplane that was true to the customized specifications. Hence, we are very disappointed with Griffith. Would not recommend this compan

Recently Mr. Griffin took on a task for me as a special order project to create a unique memorial to my late Father, Lt. Col Don "Slim" Harris, a Marine Corps Fighter Pilot from 1944 to 1970. The workmanship, attention to detail, quality of materials from the wood to the paint, coupled with the skills of the artisans, and the dedication to exceptional results all combined with the integrity of Mr. Fred Griffin to produce the finest model in my collection, and the one which characterizes my father's 28 year career in the Marines. My dad's favorite "ride" through three wars, and about 20 different air craft from the Piper Cub to the F4 Phantom, was the "Birdcage" Corsair. The F4U-1. Thank you Griffin Aerospace Models, and thank you Fred Griffin for this creation which will memorialize my dad forever. Words cannot express how happy you have made me, and how proud I am to display this model. I wholeheartedly recommend Griffin Aerospace Models for whatever project you might have in mind. I am happy to respond to any questions or forward a photo of the plane they made for me upon request.
