Pokémon League at Sage Mantis gives players of all levels the chance to play the game and build their decks, while forming friendships in a remarkably chill setting. My teenaged son has discovered a meaningful sense of community here that's hard to find anywhere else. Going to Sage Mantis on Sunday & Thursday the highlight of his week. Sage, the owner of the store, is SUCH a great guy. While definitely not overbearing (he'll say hi when you walk in and then give you space if you want it) he is very happy to help you find whatever you're searching for if you ask. We've done some trade-ins (of gaming equipment) and feel the store credit we were given was a good value. Although Pokémon League is the aspect of his store I am most familiar with, the way his business is thriving must be due to much more. At my most recent visit, Sage had recently suffered an unimaginable tragedy. There was an outpouring of support by a crowd gathered outside of Sage Mantisa vigil to honor the person he'd lost. When I saw the impact his loss had on the game store clientele, I felt a yelp review was in order because it signals to me that this store and its owner are definitely something special. read more

Cool video game store. Got some PS3 games here. I missed playing some of the old games I played and had in the past. I rebought a PS3 and now getting games I used to have in the past. Should've just kept them but I didn't. And this store is helping me bring back fun & enjoyment from the past. GameStop does not always have what I'm looking for. So I am happy that I heard of this place and come here too now. They have a cool set up with oldie game systems and games. Is t to far from my area that I live in too. The staff is knowledgeable, courteous, and professional. The store usually has some great rarities. What some people don't realize is that the store has to make a profit, so what they offer may not be close to what the original purchasing price was. My favorite retro game shop and first stop when visiting Fredericksburg! I can't express enough how fantastic the owner, Sage, is. He is such an enthusiastic, wonderful person to interact with. The offer he has to fix any old system for you is fantastic and he will help you find whatever it is that you're looking for, as well as his willingness to price-match with different places online. Their selection of games is extensive and AMAZING! They also have a lot of comic books, collectibles, dice, Pokemon cards, and hold different games/tournaments for locals to participate in. There were over 15 bootleg games prominently displayed in their glass case for NES and SNES including "Final Fantasy 7" for NES...a game that was never available on any Nintendo system. It was a PS1 game. They had several bootleg SNES Zelda games (there was only 1 Zelda title made for the SNES) none of them were labeled bootleg/fake/etc. I can't trust any store that shows off bootleg or fake copies of any game. If they want to sell them they should keep them in a different section. Pricing isn't any cheaper than you could find at any other retailer or eBay. The selection of legit games was okay. They had about 20% of the NES catalog including some uncommon titles. Outside of retro titles they had a nice setup for PC gaming and a few arcade machines which was cool to see in the store. I was largely ignored from the moment I walked in and wasn't even acknowledged until I was standing in front of the register looking at used PS4 titles for about 3 minutes. read more

I've been a solid customer to this establishment since the second day they opened on their tidewater trail location. Every time I go there, there is someone new I can chat with and learn anything I want from video games, as well as card games such as Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, Magic and others. They match any trade in value's as well as have nice deals when looking to buy something hard to find. They authenticate everything they have with having it be tested and reviewed, they clean up every game disc before buying to ensure they have it working right as the day they got it, as well as a guarantee for it to work, and if by chance if not you may bring it back. If you aren't aware then they also do video game console repairs, from controllers to the whole system, and the man I met who fixes them puts utmost care into the work he does to ensure he gets it back to you working at 100%! Nice little shop the comics are cool and so are the video games. They do have some rare things so ask for help and let them guide you about their wares. They also do Magic the Gathering and Pokémon playing so bring your best battle deck to relax and challenge some new friends in a cozy atmosphere. read more

My husband and I came here after having lunch with some friends and we are happy we did. Staff are super friendly and helpful. Prices are about the same as any other place and the arcade games were so much fun to play. Our only complaint is they are an hour from our home but the next time we are here in the area we will be back. They even special ordered an item he wanted that they didn't have on hand. read more

A cluttered store with absurd prices and at least one creep in their employ. This store is front loaded with busted arcade cabinets to greet you as soon as you enter. Navigating this obstacle of debris feels like scaling a barricade just to get inside. Maybe they're broken, maybe they were just off, but either way they do not make for a good first impression. If you manage to get through the non-working cabinets you next get to the retro game section. This section is very well stocked and clean. It is evident that they have changed out broken jewel cases for clean ones in most cases. The discs varied in quality, though no large scratches were seen. There is a glass cabinet stocked with old consoles, cartridges, and amiibos that is very clean and well lit. Unfortunately the cabinet is locked and there was only one obvious employee that was often busy with whatever event they were running that day. The locked cabinet and minimal staff made it difficult to ascertain the quality of the consoles and pin conditions of the items. The quality of the retro items did seem to be quite good, but the pricing by any standard was laughable. Most items were well above even Good condition collector value. This store looks to gouge customers more enamored with retro rather than knowledgeable of going rates. What little interaction my partner and I had with the store employee (Who we later learned actually goes by Sage Mantis, so probably the owner) had us wanting to leave the store, never to return. When we had made it about halfway through the store, to about the card tables and comics (no longer blocked from his view by the 6 foot tall cabinets), he finally engaged with us. Asking if we needed help or had questions, he would always try sneaking looks at my partner looking her up and down like no one was watching. He would try and position himself between us, guide her away to other sections, etc. She was obviously uncomfortable, moving away from him as much as she could and eventually behind me. "Sage", unable to take a hint, continued until being told his help wasn't needed. He made his way back to the card event, but not before looking over his shoulder one last time. Needless to say we left immediately and won't be returning. Pros: Clean retro section that is cared and maintained. Cons: Overpriced retro section. Cluttered entry. Creep guy. No verdict: Tabletop section, comics, collectibles, or LAN center. Never made it that far. read more

It's a pretty cool place and some of the games and consoles are a reasonable rate, but they really try to get one over on you when you trade stuff in. Also the guy behind the counter even though he was talking to me a little bit and helped me with my trade in, he just seemed like he was wayyy to focused on his game. It felt like I was more of a inconvenience to his gaming time then an actual customer. I'll still go and like I said it's not a bad place but I just feel like it could be a little more professional. read more

This is a great place to play yugioh and pokemon along with paying to play xbox and PC. But the purchasing and selling of item sucks the prices are out of whack like .99$ for a 20$ video game(selling) and if you look and see the price of something in this shop look it up on eBay before you buy or your gonna get ripped off I recommend not buying or selling anything here but if you're looking for a good time I'd come here. read more

I have attended the store for Smash tournaments in the past, and I have a few major complaints with the way the store handles their organization. I think that 10 dollars is too high of an entry fee for a weekly tournament, especially when the store refuses to offer a discount to entrants who bring their own CRT TVs and GameCubes to the event. Additionally, I strongly disagree with the stores decision to not issue refunds for events with low attendance. If there aren't the minimum of 8 players for an event and the store decides to cancel, then it should issue a refund to all of the players instead of keeping the already overpriced venue fee. The tournaments I attended had poor attendance and were very cramped for space. I can't see a reason to go back until these things change. I don't see why a succesful business would need to give players so many reasons not to attend events. read more

Love this place! I've come in a few times to pick up some games. But recently I went in looking for an Orange Fire N64. Was only able to find one controller in that color but nothing else. Talked with the owner. He took my name and number. Within a half hour, I had a call that he found one for me and would have it shipped here if I was interested. I was amazed at how quickly he tracked one down for me. Also incredibly reasonably priced. Very impressed with this shop. Would recommend to anyone who loves gaming! read more
