As a foodie I am always happy when a new restaurant opens near me. I went for lunch on a Friday and it was packed! You order at the counter and are given a number and the food is brought to your table. There are both indoor and outdoor tables. I shared the market hummus, harissa fries and chicken schnitzel sandwich with a friend. Everything was good but nothing really memorable. I also found it on the pricier side for a counter service restaurant. If im craving Mediterranean food and don't feel like driving uptown to Saba I would return. read more

Safta's Table is a new restaurant at the corner of Allen Toussaint and West End. It's in the new development called the Old Theater. I love Mediterranean so I was eager to try it. I was surprised when we walked in and it's a self order restaurant with a limited menu. It is Cashless which we are not a fan of. We ordered the Classic Tahini Hummus with an extra pita which was $3 extra. We also ordered the $14 Chicken Salad Sandwich that doesn't come with any sides and a Margarita. Our bill was almost $40. It was disappointing that the cashier didn't tell us that my husband could get his water at the counter when we ordered. Instead he waited until he had brought me the margarita. So my husband had to get up and get the water at the counter and wondered why the young man couldn't have just brought him a glass when he brought out the margarita. The one thing that we both loved were the in-house made pitas. These were much thicker than a typical pita so we could have skipped the extra one. The hummus was good as well as the Chicken Salad sandwich but I feel the whole menu is overpriced. There's outdoor seating and the inside is bright and open. However, they don't have gyros or other items that I would expected and I don't feel that the quality of the food was worth the price so this will be our only visit. Food was good, but underwhelming. Especially for the price. I ordered the salmon entree, which only comes with one side. No sauce, no pita. Everything is extra. Tip options for counter service were 18% and up. As others have mentioned, the pitas aren't fresh baked like other restaurants in the same ownership group. And I love garlic, but that's the only seasoning of note I could taste. Would I go back? Maybe. My friend's schnitzel sandwich was good and a very large portion. The tahini chocolate chip cookies are very good, as a highlight. And I did enjoy the market hummus with pickles. read more

The fries with harissa aioli were our favorite item, although the portion was very small for $7. The bacon egg & cheese pita sandwich was our least favorite--pretty basic and lacked flavor. The Turkish-style eggs and breakfast hummus were better, but still pretty average and not particularly unique. Overall, we'd rate the food 4/5, but we felt the restaurant was overpriced for the amount of food we received. The retro-modern decor is cute though, and there's plenty of indoor seating. read more

This is such a lovely casual Mediterranean lunch spot in the Lakeview area. They serve brunch and lunch and they have coffees as well as teas and alcohol. They also have a lovely to go Deli Case and I can't wait to go back and buy a bunch of those side dishes that they serve at Saba. The food is cooked fresh to order at the counter where you place your order and then they bring it to your table. The Service is cheerful and they are very friendly. It's such a clean and bright spot with indoor and outdoor seating and handicapped access. I will be back. read more

Overall very good, only complaint is that the pita was not warm or as fresh as we've had at Saba but I guess that's in line with the unique "cafeteria" grab and go concept. This was such a letdown. Waited in line for 30+ min with one person working the register. Ambiance was clean but a bit sterile in design. Sat outside where most people left their tables unbussed (it was unclear what you were supposed to do) so it took forever to find a clean space or you had to clean up someone else's mess. The food was absolutely mid- my friend never even actually received her order (or a refund). Wouldn't be worth a revisit. read more

If you're expecting reasonable portions for the price you pay, I'd recommend not dining here. I had high hopes, so I'm really upset by this experience. We got 2 orders of the lamb and the hummus appetizer totaling $62 before tip. The hummus came with 1 piece of pita and both of the lamb plates came out a little colder than room temperature. The tomato and cucumber salad side was comparable to a generous side of pico de gallo at a Mexican restaurant. I would expect a little more lamb and more generous side size for the price, I would definitely expect warm bread and meat at the very least. Making the trip uptown to Shaya is worth it compared to Safta's in my opinion read more

Perfect for if you want Shaya, but in a slightly more casual way. We have done both breakfast and lunch here and both were delicious. For breakfast, pancakes were awesome, and we loved the egg and cheese sandwich. I would highly recommend if two of you are going to share those. (Because the pancakes were light and the sandwich was filling.) For lunch, the chicken schnitzel sandwich is on a pita and was delicious. The hummus is a must. I could have passed on the meatball appetizer. Overall, as long as the line isn't too long, then it's a great place to eat a fancier casual meal. This place is definitely worth a stop. Most important expectation setting first: the pitas are not the same as Saba or Shaya. They're a little firmer and kind of dry like a traditional pita. If you're expecting what you get at Saba or Shaya, as I was, this will be a major blow psychologically and emotionally. Once you recover, you'll realize that the food is still really good. The chicken was well cooked, seasoned and tender. Their sides are fresh and flavorful. It's a nice relatively healthy option and it will definitely be in the rotation. Honestly, now that I know I can skip the pita it is even that much more appealing as a healthy dinner spot. That said - just in case management js reading - I'll be there 6 days a week if your pitas start coming out like the ones at Saba or Shaya. Those pitas with hummus as one of the best and most underrated delicacies of New Orleans cuisine. read more

Meh. It was ok. It kinda felt like an expensive Pita Pit, if I'm being honest, except that Pita Pit was far more flavorful and filling. This place was clean and bright. Cafeteria style, like fast food, order and then the food is brought to you by a food runner. I had the falafel wrap, bc the plate seemed like just falafel and that's it. No hummus or anything with it. Sides extra. I had a margarita, which kinda tasted like a basic lemonade, more than lime or anything. My friend had a mocktail. Was it rose pomegranate? It was really pretty. They did a good job on hers. She liked it. I suppose I'd be fine with going again, if I were in that shopping center and needed a quick bite, otherwise, there's so much more nearby that is a better meal and experience for your money. I love Shaya (and went Alon was still there) and Saba, and even though they're pricey, the experience and dishes seem worth it. I even have his cookbook, so this isn't shade for Chef Alon, personally, or anything. I just wasn't crazy about it. This was casual and like fast food, but with more elevated prices. The front of this restaurant is painted/decorated so cute we were expecting great things. We were disappointed. We hoped to enter into an exotic Mediterranean atmosphere but the interior as described by our adult son was "school cafeteria" and as bright as a Walmart! The food and drinks were way overpriced and mediocre. I had the roasted chicken plate with ginger rice, which was tiny and tasteless. My wife's lamb sandwich was good but nothing to write home about. You can't go wrong with the pita - I love Shaya uptown so much so I'm very happy to have this place closer to home for pita & hummus access. The fennel salad was delicious, light and tasty. I thought the chicken sandwich was incredibly dry and my chicken was pretty overcooked - for $20, it'll be a long time before I try that again. Food was bland, meat looked and tasted dry, the rice was crispy, and presentation of the food was cafeteria style...literally. On top of that I had to bus my own table. The flies were smashing in the window to escape. I'm thinking this business blew the budget on the paint on the outside and neglected to focus on the quality food on the inside. I questioned myself why I even left a 18% gratuity on a $100 tab for a cafeteria experience, especially when I had to serve my own water and bus my own table. This place is way over priced for hospital-like food where the food basically comes out à la cart. I suggest the business owners and the cooks of Safta's go visit a real Mediterranean style restaurant for inspiration to see what this cuisine is actually supposed to taste like. The only thing this restaurant had right was the fluffy warm pita bread and dipping sauces, but other than that everything else was so bland. I spent $100 and I question what I paid for. I've never written a yelp review before, but I am left with no choice. I've been twice now, the first time being a month ago. The food is great. 5 stars. Overpriced as all hell but it's upscale. Whatever. HOWEVER, my two complaints are really making me not want to go back. First of all, the guy working the counter seems to hate his life, and me, even though I paid $80 for two entrees, hummus, and drinks. I have worked in service nearly my whole life, and I get it dude. There are days when I really struggle to keep a positive energy and mindset, but that's the job. Just have better energy, your face alone is dragging the whole place down. Second of all, don't buy the mimosa. It's $9. Go literally anywhere else for bottomless mimosas. I was handed that glass (HALF EMPTY) with a straight face, and after the service, atrocious price, and tip gouging, that really pissed me off. It was about 3 sips. The restaurant is located in a strip mall, but the delightfully painted front and striped awnings make it very inviting. You order at the counter, and they bring you the food. We waited almost 30 minutes for our food. It was not terribly busy, but it seemed like a long wait to us. I couldn't pay $4 for an iced tea that I had to get myself so I just drank water. They have very small cups, so I got two. There is an ice chest with ice for the tea and the water. We ordered two sandwiches, no sides. The sandwiches were good and filling: chicken schnitzel and falafel. We planned to split them, but they were so wet that they fell apart about half way through. The pita that is made in house wasn't able to contain the ingredients of the sandwiches. They came wrapped in foil in a paperboard box. Later, I saw that there were plates available, and if I had seen them to begin with, we might have been able to salvage the sandwiches a bit better at the outset. We expected the schnitzel to be flattened and then breaded and fried. This was more of a piece of fried chicken that was much bigger on one side than the other which caused an issue when trying to eat it in a sandwich. I think that we would have been happier with a plate rather than a sandwich. The table was a mess when we were done with used napkins, boxes, foil, plates, and silverware piled high. We spend almost $50 including tip for two sandwiches and one lemonade, and I had to keep going back to the counter for more napkins, plates, silverware, and to replenish my small water cups. There are many people working there, and though service was friendly, they don't help you much. BTW: There is no more lamb on the menu. read more

We went on the first week of opening, there was a line out of the door for lunch but it moved fairly quickly. They passed around pita to customers waiting in line which was nice. We ordered the chicken schnitzel sandwiches, harissa fries, and a peanut butter cookie. Everything was delicious, the sandwich is truly incredible. Saba is one of my favorite restaurants in the city so I was excited to see some repeats from that menu but there's a lot that's new. I love the retro modern interior design as well. The outside patio area could use some greenery but is nice. Lakeview is in desperate need of good restaurants so we are stoked to have this in the neighborhood! read more

Went for brunch on a Sunday morning around 11am. It wasn't very crowded when we arrived but got busy while we waited for the food. My friends got their food within 10 min. I probably sat there another 10 min waiting for mine and it was just a breakfast sandwich and latke. I had to go back up to ask where it was. There was only one staff member bringing out food and one bringing out drinks. I ordered an espresso martini and it was probably the worst espresso martini I've ever had for $12!!!!! It came in a short rocks glass instead of a martini glass and it had a large ice cube in it which watered it down. The only problem I had with the cafeteria style was if I wanted to order another drink, I had to go and stand back in line which was probably 10 people deep then. I really want to give it another try for lunch or dinner because I know Alon Shaya is worth a second try. read more

Expensive, tasteless food. The best thing was the espresso cookie. The halva late tasted of plain coffee. No halva taste whatsoever. The breakfast platter was small, greasy, and undercooked bacon. The boreka was ok but little to no flavor. And the pesto that cane with it had almost no taste at all. The pita breakfast sandwich was ok except for the bacon again was way undercooked. And if you love tiramisu like we do don't bother. It was completely tasteless. Not sweet at all and no coffee flavor. What a letdown. $80 wasted, wah-wah. read more

I think this has a lot of promise for Lakeview but some things definitely need to improve. I've dined at Saba and Shaya many times. The lemon broccoli was not cooked consistently. Some pieces were crunchy and others mushy at the bottom and the flavor really wasn't that great. I had the chicken plate and I just don't think the flavors were there in comparison to chicken at Saba and I'm not sure it was cooked quite right as far as temperature. The fries were consistent with the other restaurants, but came out not as hot as they should have been. My husband had the chicken schnitzel sandwich and that was pretty good. I like the outdoor seating area. I agree with the other reviews. Me and my husband spent about $70 (hot drinks and dessert to go) and to spend that much the food should be pretty amazing. The restaurant was buzzing with families and energy. The layout of tables and the ordering area, as well as the placement of the "To Go" fridge, all seemed carefully curated, which matched the food quality and service. We had an excellent meal, the restaurant was full and people were being greeted directly by Alon Shaya. We loved the cute drink cups and every bite of our food was delicious. It was everything we hoped it would be, given the quality of all of their other restaurants. We will absolutely go back and we highly recommend this great neighborhood restaurant. read more

SOooo as being my first visit & seeing pre-prepared food to go while also ordering my food to go & not yet knowing the 'Lay of the Land' I thought I'd investigate all of the offerings while I waited for my order & some little cups of what looked like red & green condiments caught my eye so I thought to grab some, but was told 'don't worry you'll get what comes with your order' or something like that so I assumed it'd be in my bag, which it wasn't, so I returned to the counter to get it whereupon I was told the little condiment cups were for sale but I could have them this one time, which was fair enough I thought. But I then asked why didn't you just tell me they were for sale in the first place & that would've been the end of it for me instead of saying 'don't worry' ?! First of all I wasn't worried about it (which is insulting In & of itself) & having just dropped 45 bucks on 2 sandwiches & a hummus before tip I certainly wasn't looking for or expecting any freebies. Instead some solid communication on the front end would have been the appropriate move here & appreciated by me.... Regardless, on my first visit I left feeling out of place, awkward & belittled.... Uncomfortable & kind of unwelcome, a lil' creeped out and insulted.
