For the discerning reader, please know that I'm a cafe sort of guy. An academic from the early 90s…read moreonward, like many scholars, I have spent more hours of my life in cafes than almost anywhere else. I long to find the perfect spot, where the bakery items, food, coffee, espresso, setting, friendliness of the staff, everything come together. Trust me when I say that this is the real deal. R & H Cafe is my favorite cafe in the world, maybe tied slightly with a great place on Rue de Abbesses in Paris, called Cuillier. I have eaten there about six times in the last two weeks. I can tell you that the people working here are some of the nicest cafe owners I've ever met. The baked goods are made fresh weekly and offer some of the most unique and interesting recipes I've encountered in cafe. I highly suggest their moist and decadent banana bread. Even I'm not sure how banana bread gets that delicious. Hopefully, when you get there, they will have the carrot cake loaf, which is completely unlike American carrot cake (thank goodness). The R & H version lacks raisins and nuts baked into the load. Instead, it has a light frosting that hints of maple, and then has black sesame seeds on top with a few walnuts. The taste is exotic. Second, I highly suggest the Apricot Pistachio cake. I don't normally like dried fruits and nuts in my dessert and this may be one of the best items I've eaten in my London travels. The raisin cookie is surprisingly great, considering I do not even like raisins. And that should really tell you something: I don't like dried fruits in bread and order theirs. I don't like raisins but order their raisin cookie. My point being that this place does everything so well that I trust them. I want to see what amazing things they do with ingredients. If they have fresh made saffron bundt cakes: order one. Pair it with either their great Nude espresso or cappuccinos. Oh, and as if all of this wasn't enough: they make incredible savory egg dishes! I had the one with pinto beans in a Persian spicy sauce. Blew me away how great it was. They have a fantastic, small gallery upstairs. And if you live in the area, they seem to also have prefix menu nights when they cook dinners. I didn't have one of their dinners, but I know wine enough to see that the bottles they have up on the wall are very thoughtfully considered. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this place, the ladies who work there, the cuteness of the ambiance, the fantastic Iranian and Sufi music they play, and more than anything else: the baked goods and espresso drinks.

The family style atmosphere was welcoming as diners arrived from a variety of backgrounds in what was to be an experience of Persian delights. Normally we visit R&H for coffee and breakfast which in itself is amazing. This time it was for a monthly supper club. Not knowing what to expect we enjoyed a bottle of wine from South Africa and an amazing first course made from yoghurt and spinach along with tasty cheese, olives, walnuts, bread and an authentic Iranian drink - fantastic. Then a traditional soup with lentil and pasta which I took great joy in as I dipped my Iranian bread into the bowl. Then came the rice frittata and Salmon made to perfection. Finally fig cake (and special for me a poached beetroot with nuts). All topped off with great coffee. Wow and amazing are too simple a set of adjectives to describe the meal, experience and our hosts Zara and Mahren! So come to Richmond and to R&H and grab a coffee and a great meal. Then come to the next R&H supper club and prepare to enjoy one of London's best culinary gems!

My, my, my, what a weird little place you are, Shiraz. Sure, I went to see you on a friend date…read more Sure, we were pre-movie early birds. But why you remained awkwardly empty--aside from the owner eating at one of the tables in the back--for the whole hour and change we were there still perplexes me. Especially since the owner/server was oddly charming, the Persian (does Persia still exist in the world of Culinaria?) tea was sweet but pleasing, the Vegetable Bourek was tasty, and the Moussaka was pretty excellent. So why did the dining experience leave me feeling like I just took down cheese-covered lentils in the Orientalist Twilight Zone? Oh, Shiraz--you might not have the aura of a "winner," but I like you anyway. So, Dear Reader, help a poor restaurant out--the next time you and your group want to go out for a lively meal, book Shiraz. The food is reasonably priced, they have cheap house wine, and a browse on localsecrets.com should turn up an offer or two. Whether you have the heart to cash in a 20% off food coupon as the only table in the house is up to you--I sure didn't.

It's a shame the restaurant was so empty when we arrived at 7pm. The waitress was very friendly and helpful, and the prices were reasonable. If you're looking for something a bit different in Cambridge, I highly recommend it - makes a change from yet another 'Italian' restaurant!

I am glad to be trying new cuisines to be able to bring these to all and this place is a real gem…read more THE MOOD: In Finchley and easy location to travel to. Authentic interior with a large bread clay oven at the front where all the fresh nans are made. A busy environment but easy to talk and make conversation so no loud music and good acoustics. THE FOOD: We had the following dishes: Kash Bademjan - Egg plant dip and although I am not a fan usually but as this was all mashed up and mixed with other ingredients it goes well with the nan as well as the sauces that come along with this. Big enough starter to share. Nan - This comes along as standard as far as I can tell and worth ordering anyway as you will need to see the size of this but 1 will be enough for 2-4 of you to share. This is made fresh in clay oven and as I say this is a must. Chello Koubideh - Lamb kofte style with rice and you get two long kofte style pieces. Nice dish and I dont think you will finish this so be prepared for take away. Morassah Polo - I am told this is the the King of all Persian dishes and comes with the Persian Jewelled Rice. The rice is amazingly fragrant and comes with a splash of colours and tastes of sweetness that complements the chicken perfectly. The chicken itself is coated with a tomato coating and chicken is moist and falls off the bone, it was just perfect. You also get a curry sauce that compliments entire dish. I actually cant wait to go back here and again lots of food so again be ready for a take away. Tadig - This is the golden crunchy bottom rice layer, the crowning glory of all Persian rice dishes! To me this is better known as the burnt bottom of the rice, in Persian cuisine, it is much sought after! This was served with some great soft succulent meat pieces served with an amazing sauce with beans and some fries. A sharing dish again and worth trying but then maybe hold off on a starter. THE VERDICT: A good place to come and actually I ordered too much but even with enough food for three maybe four the price is reasonable and food is tasty and great atmosphere with friendly staff. Ok you pack your own doggy bag but that's ok. I would recommend a visit. £50.00 for two

Faanoos has been there for a couple of years or so but, although I've heard glowing reports about it from various friends, I had never been there myself... until tonight. The decor is authentic, the music pleasant without being intrusive and the clientele a mix of families, couples and friends. It's smallish (probably about 30 covers), with a large bread oven in the window giving out a comforting heat on a cold night. The food was tender and delicious with generous portions - and incredibly good value! The first thing you need to do as soon as you walk in is order the pita bread. The restaurant has an on-site clay over in which they freshly bake the pita bread. A good excuse to eat more of the pita bread is to order the humus to start. It is smooth, has a natural flavour and is enough for two or three people to share. Then, after you've ordered and gluttonously eaten more pita bread you are ready for mains get the okra-lamb stew with jasmine rice and the beef kebabs (meal size). It is more than enough to give you a couple of food babies. Let me start with the okra stew. Its light, has a very soft yet full of flavor. The rice is light and fluffy. I am sure they have a rice cooker to end ALL rice cookers. The kebab's are really juicy. It's just all very good. Very very good. Just go. Please. Now.
