The staff was quite pleasant, and the atmosphere perfect for a long lunch with coffee. They provide wifi and the music is non-obtrusive.
I ordered the schwarma wrap. The lavosh wrap around the filling was fantastic: fresh and soft, yet crisped a bit in parts. I asked for hummus to be added and I'm glad I did. I'm not sure the wrap would have had as much flavor without it. The meat itself seemed a bit tough and not as tender as I was hoping. On closer inspection, it's not all that obvious if they're doing much cooking at the actual location. I asked about the bakery items, for example, and was told they were delivered and not made in house. And that really gets to the heard of my mediocre review: while the coffee drinks and setting are nice enough, the pastries were very lacking.
I ordered a custard tartlet, able to see that it the crust was not pastry flour but phyllo dough (the easier option to make, but with a shorter shelf life). Sure enough, the phyllo was almost impossible to cut with a fork. I had to rip it apart, leaving custard falling everywhere. The taste of the custard itself was good, but of course it would keep a long time in a cold fridge since it's mostly fat.
I also ordered cupcake. I asked specifically if they were fresh. The waitress said they were. I asked if they were moist and she said they were. I tried a caramel cupcake in hopes it would be better than the custard treat and it most definitely was not. The cupcake frosting was what you would expect from a mostly caramel substance kept in a cold fridge: hard and unable to either bite into or cut with a fork without it all falling off. And the cake part itself was incredible dry, like a scone, simply crumbling everywhere and almost flavorless.
Like many cafes, they don't realize that at some point, you just can't sell the pastries anymore that haven't sold in their first day or two.
The service was reliable and friendly and so my review is positive of the people there. Their approach to food is very much like a deli though, not a bakery. You can buy items that have been mostly prepared elsewhere: cans of soda, bakery items made elsewhere, bags of crisps (chips). read more
