One of the best restaurants in Detroit and one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. This is thanks to the chef and owner Chef Omar, who is a fantastic human. The restaurant is easy to miss, located on a main road. They do have a small free parking lot. The interior is small, intimate, casual, and unpretentious. At my second visit (my first was several years ago when it first opened) my friend and I came late in the afternoon on a Friday. I'm not sure if we came at a slow time (we were initially the first customers there) or that the Chef was training a new service, but we received VIP treatment. I've occasionally had chefs check in, I've never had service from the chef before! He discussed the menu, as well as his intention for the restaurant. I love Moroccan tea, and the tea service they provide is just lovely. He is certified in tea, and incredibly knowledgeable. My friend and I started with the mudammas fava bean dip, served with pita chips. This was so fantastic I would return just for it. Creamy, just the right balance of flavor, topped with fresh veggies to add texture, I cannot say enough good things. I had the lamb tagine, and she had the kafta meatball batbout. The meatball is listed as a sandwich, it is in house made flatbread. Both dishes were amazing, so fresh and flavorful. The lamb shank was fall off the bone, the couscous was loaded with fresh vegetables. I ended up stopping in for lunch again by myself. I had the harissa potatoes and the flava bean soup, and a slice of pie that was a special. Everything again was fantastic, but it's the potatoes that you will crave after having once. Crispy and brightly flavored, soft once you bit in. I was able to try one of the Chef's teas, and hear a bit more about the restaurant. While the bread for the meatball batbout is made in house, the bread for the fish and chicken sandwiches he obtains locally. I like how engaged he, and the restaurant as a result, is with the community. Chef Omar treats all of his customers as welcomed friends. A quick note that the restaurant does not have any alcohol. My family and I visited Saffron de Twah a couple of days ago, and we had a really great experience. Everything we ordered was delicious. The hummus, tomato dip, potatoes (you HAVE TO get the potatoes!), chicken sandwich, fish sandwich, and even the lemonade all stood out. Our server, Walter, was very nice and professional. He explained all the dishes on the menu clearly and made us want to try everything. Chef Omar also stopped by to chat and share his experiences as a chef in different countries, which made the whole experience feel warm and welcoming. Super small restaurant with a large patio for warmer weather. Order at the counter and they'll bring your food out to you. After eating, back to the counter to pay. I recommend reservations based on the amount of customers I saw come in. We had 9 people in our party. Everything looked good and tasted good too. Wait time was a little long depending on what you ordered but there were only 4 people working; Chef Omar who worked the crowd for 1/2 the time we were there (it was cool to talk to the chef), another chef, the waiter/counter person and a support staff person who cleared tables and help bring out food when the counter was busy. Service was excellent especially considering there were only 2 people running the restaurant, one of which was the chef! We were welcomed, thankfully got a table (we came before the lunch rush- reservations are recommended as it's a very small restaurant), & the Chef took the time to go over the entire menu with us (despite being busy). You will have to be patient at this restaurant, so don't be in a rush;) We wanted to eat small but had to try some dishes and were so glad we did. We started off with the Bissara Soup (crushed fava beans, garlic, oil, cilantro) which was really delicious. I wanted to try more of the vegetable dishes so I went with the Zalouk which was a smoky eggplant & tomato "dip" that came with some freshly fried pita chips & a side of the Charmoula Slaw. My husband got the fried fish sandwich which he loved and I enjoyed some delicious bites also. There are several other (award winning) dishes we will come back to try (The Tomato Dip, Beet Salad, Brussel Sprouts, Chicken sandwich etc...)! There is plenty of free parking since there is a parking lot behind/next to the restaurant. If you turn in right in front of the restaurant, there are about 2-4 (?) parking spots but it's really tight there since the front doors swing out so next time we will just use the lot. Right now during winter, I think they are only seating inside the restaurant (maybe 5-6 tables) but we noticed the outdoor vinyl panel space which definitely extends the restaurant during the warmer months. You should come here as soon as possible!! Every single bite was delicious and bright. The location is small with a patio and a couple of seats inside. You order at the front and they will bring their food out to you. The front staff is happy to answer any of your questions. They have a large list of dry bar options! I've heard they are planning and building out a cocktail menu but as it stands there is something for anyone. The harissa potatoes were my favorite bite of the night! Crispy and spicy. Yum! I got a veggie bowl and it was absolutely delicious. The collards were briny and brought such a freshness to the bowl. The meatball sandwich and the fried chicken sandwich both looked amazing. I dropped in for a carryout and was pleasantly surprised. There were just a few other customers there. The host patiently explained everything on the menu and made suggestions - I ended up with Lamb Ribs, Chicken Sandwich, Harissa Potatoes and the Lamb Shank. They threw in a large orange blossom lemonade (delicious and refreshing). All the food was delicious, the host was very personable, and the carryout wait was reasonable. While I as there a few people walked in without reservations and the host worked hard to accommodate everyone. There is a small counter which seats maybe 4 or 5 and several pretty small tables so reservations are the best bet. I went when there was snow outside, so no outdoor seating. There isn't a vestibule so every time the door opened we got a bit of cold air which may be uncomfortable on super frigid days. Will I go again? Absolutely! He was really friendly and we could tell very passionate about cooking. This was apparent with all the unique flavors and freshness of the food. We also had the Moroccan fish sandwich, the seasoning and crunchiness of the fish & the accompanying Chermoula slaw was lemony & delish! The lamb shank came with a vegetable cous cous with was a modern take on a Moroccan classic. We sampled the Moroccan carrot salad which is zesty with a vinegary kick and the harrisa chili crisp which Chef Omar let us try. I love spicy food and this was wonderful to dip out bread in. My husband ordered the Orange Blossom lemonade which was such a neat combination and unexpectedly delicious. Last but not least, the Bread pudding. Yumm. It was a great way to end our meal. The patio is really cute and has a heater if needed also. My hubby is Moroccan and though this is a modern and unique take on classic dishes, we both absolutely loved it. My friends have been telling me about this place forever and it finally reopened so we had to check it out (with them, obviously). This place is very unassuming and it would be easy to drive right past it. There are only 3 tables ish inside and a few on their enclosed patio, and it's very cozy. Decor is very Moroccan, but I wouldn't say the food is entirely reflective of Moroccan cuisine (yes, I've been there). With that said, the food was fantastic. I had the chicken sandwich which seems to be a popular menu item, along with the harissa potatoes. The sandwich falls apart easily and can get messy but it's worth it. I would come back for the potatoes any day of the week. Get them! My bf got the meatballs and they were really good too. There's no alcohol or table service by the way. We dropped in to try out the fare at Saffron De Twah on a warm Sunday evening. Lucky for us, it was not too busy and we were able to snag a seat on the patio. We tried a few dishes (it was difficult to choose!) and we liked everything we tried. I am not a "sweet sauce" kinda girl, so if I tried the Moroccan Chicken again, I would ask for the sauce (maybe honey?) to be skipped. Not positive what it was but thankfully it was just a hint. The fish was amazing and the roasted potatoes gave off this gentle warm heat. Not too spicy (even though I enjoy spice) they were just the right amount of warm. The slaw on top of the sandwiches was very flavorful and Chef Omar made sure to stop by each table and say hello. That was a nice touch! The food is 10/10. Amazing. Zero notes. The taste is there and the portions are great. The lemonade is great and large enough to share. The eggplant is unlike any eggplant I've ever had, and I'm now an eggplant lover. I didn't find a kid's menu, but our kid eats anything so we just shared our food with them. The service is a little odd because I think you order at the counter, but you may not have a menu on your table, and you may need a little help understanding the menu. The outside of the restaurant looks rough. Like you may just want to pass it by. Once inside, there's a roughish looking courtyard, and inside that is the interior dining room. It has a few tables, and all look into the kitchen so you can hear the chefs and all the timers. So the ambience is maybe a little wonky, but the food is amazing. We'll definitely go back. read more

I could write about this place for days and days, and it wouldn't do it justice. So I'll do my best to give you some of the highlights. Currently it's reservation only. The inside of the restaurant is VERY SMALL with just enough space for a few tables. On the other hand, they've added an outdoor(ish) area that's covered with possibly triple the seating. In the winter, it's fine? There's plenty of space heaters but I imagine the space will be nice come spring. The food tho. THE FOOD. I was really happy with every level of my experience. My friends who had been there before sang epic tales of the chicken sandwich, but sadly it's no longer offered on the menu because, I quote, it was "too powerful" (aka the demand was so high they couldn't be expected to keep up and maintain quality). But the owner did say he was planning to offer it on special occassions. The potatoes blew my mind. They were so incredibly tasty. The lamb tagine tasted fantastic, though I had a bite of my friend's fish tagine, and I might go for that next time. I had quite a few bits of my partner's apricot chicken tagine and it was so tender. For dessert, I reaaally enjoyed the tahini hot chocolate (which reminded me a lot of the kind of hot chocolate you'd dip churros into in Spain). There was also a bird's nest custard sort of dessert called the Mouhlabia. I wouldn't say that was a runaway hit with my friends. Some people liked it or didn't. It has a very mild flavor so expect it more as a palate cleanser than a sweet dessert. The owner and our server were incredibly nice and attentive. I also appreciated that the owner talked us through the menu and described the restaurant's commitment to remain accessible to locals (despite the fact that they could easily be charging far more for their amazing food). This place is fantastic. It's catapulted to one of my all time favorite places to eat when I'm in Detroit, and I'm planning to take all of my out of town friends here. Ugh. 'Twah's the night after Thanksgiving, when we scoured Detroit, In search of a meal, one that would not disappoint. A table was chosen and booked with great care, And boy did Chef Anani deliver beyond compare. Okay, enough with bad poetry. This Morroccan-style restaurant is Chef Omar Anani's revamped homage to a modern Morroccan dinner party. Keep your eyes peeled for a nondescript bungalow with tarps on the outside - this unassuming front yields to a cozy, covered patio (for warmer days) and a small dining room + kitchen where the chef himself will greet and seat you. The parking lot feels a little sketch as it's an awkward triangle surrounding the restaurant and evidence of ongoing construction also lives here, but just pick a place where you're not blocking incoming guests and you'll be fine. We were made to feel at home right away in a window alcove next to a fake fireplace brimming with greenery and Mediterranean decor. A jug of water and menus swiftly followed. There's only a few tables inside, so I'd definitely recommend making a reservation. The walls are pretty thin and you'd be wise to bring some extra layers while dining in. Fans of Saffron de Twah's viral fried chicken sandwich shouldn't mourn its absence from the menu for too long - I promise that the Tagines will blow you away. The appetizers were good (you'll never go back to Stacy's pita chips after trying Saffron's pita chips), but I was not prepared for the kaleidoscope of flavor and texture imbued in the inventive Fish (catfish) and Chicken Tagines. The protein was plump and juicy, vegetables crispy and fresh, and grains balanced and earthy. I still dream of their tagine today. Chef has had to downsize pretty considerably since COVID and it's impressive that the new restaurant is delivering as stellar quality as it is with the handful of remaining employees that serve as waiters, cooks, and busboys. Service was superb, with each employee coming to check in on us and Chef Anani sharing a little about how it was he came to own this plot of land in the self-described 'hood, to his explanation of the traditional Morroccan tea service with demonstration of pouring tea from the long-handled teapot. An Oral Symphony My partner and I visited Detroit for a weekend from Chicago. We love to experience good food and we are well traveled, nationally and internationally. Coming to Saffron De Twah, we hit the target- bullseye! Finally got to try Saffron De Twah and man was it worth the wait (at curbside pickup)! Must have item (that I've tried); the Moroccan chicken sandwich. Gargantuan in size and equally so in flavor, I couldn't get enough! The chicken was crispy and juicy, the sauce was unique, and the slaw added a nice punch. This sandwich has the crave factor that helps me decide whether I'll go back or not! The Moroccan fried fish sandwich was very good as well, but just didn't have the crunch factor that I wanted. It's a bit harder to do so with catfish but at least the flavors are pretty good all around aside from that. It can be hard to find - it looks a little sketchy from the outside, but once you enter, you realize this is a high-end food experience with down-to-earth prices. The lot itself is pretty small and tight to get in and out of. It's halal here, Moroccan food and alcohol free. Communal tables and counter spaces here. It's small, about 14 seats. Ordered the fish and chips, the fish is corn mealed and gluten free, harissa slaw, roasted beet salad and the fried chicken sandwich. The guy that took our order is super friendly and informative. He is such a nice guy, likes feedback and really listens too. The busser and runner was quick and efficient to bring out our food as soon as it was done and keep our table tidy. The orange blossom has a strong floral presence, Rose water maybe, it's very different for sure. The fried chicken is huge, super crunchy, tasted good, just a bit cumbersome to eat and was piled with the yummy harissa slaw. The beet salad was refreshingly good and love the creaminess from the cheese. The harissa slaw tastes good, have to get used to the long slices, it's hard to fold over and eat, but doable.
