Worst customer service at night. Depending on whose working they'll close the check stands at 1245 or 1 or even 1230. I've gotten into an argument with the Asian night cashier because of her rudeness. I worked at a grocery store for years and worked my way from bagger to management. If I managed this store I would definitely fire some people on the night staff. On a good note, there's an older black guy that's a stocker and helps as a cashier at night that is AWESOME. I had a nuts emergency; I was going nuts. I needed hazelnuts... and this was the place. I'm not sure if this Safeway is 24 hours, but it's got a better selection than the Napa one, especially when it comes to their Signature Deli. The cashier handled an unexpected hiccup with a customer in front of me&I was checked out quickly. I found the hazelnuts, some tuna for fish tacos... without much hassle. This Safeway could use some help; its parking lot was crowded&people were parked in obvious no-parking sections (like a clearly marked red fire lane) Its aisles are narrow, making it a hassle for customers in motorized wheelchairs. Despite its obvious need for an upgrade, I think Sonoma has a better Safeway than Napa. Go figure. read more

Yesterday I taste tested 3-4 Potato Salads for catering a large party in Sonoma. Tasted Sonoma Market, Whole Foods, and Safeway. Although Nona's at SM was great, my husband loved 2 potato salads at Safeway - the Red White and Blue Salad and the Market Potato Salad with Eggs. We are ordering the Safeway Market Potato Salad ! Well, it's just like other massive supermarkets, in that they have fifty different brands of one thing to choose from, but they don't have ANY of the one thing you need, and the clerk who is responsible for that section has never heard of the one thing you need. Safeway's "deli" doesn't smell as bad as Lucky's, but they, too, have a very limited selection of produce (why do their produce clerks INSIST that any "yellow" potato is the same as a "Yukon gold" potato?!) ... anyway. Another of their favorite tricks in the produce department is to package food in large quantities that can't be used up before it spoils--- they ONLY sell plastic bags of six or eight Persian cucumbers, or a styrofoam plate with two pounds of asparagus on it... Safeway has better meat selection than Lucky, although that's not saying much, and, like Lucky, very little edible bread, although they have table after table piled with their own "baked goods," of which I will not speak, in order to keep a civil tongue in my head. But keeping a civil tongue is hard to do, when you are mad that they don't have rice vermicelli noodles, even though they have every other kind of noodles under the sun ... so I asked a clerk if I could speak to a manager. I think his name was TJ and he helped me out to my car because I had a broken leg and it makes it hard to get around. I came back again later and he was collecting carts in the parking lot so I stopped to thank him again and some lady who ended up being his manager started yelling at him to get back to work. On Saturday, December 1st, my mother (now 84-years of age), who lives alone in Sonoma near the Safeway store, was shopping for a few grocery items. Upon her checking-out at the cashier, she gathered her groceries & went on her merry way home. The following day, today (Sunday, December 2nd), my mother, while attending her Sunday mass at the local parish, she was reaching for her case-wallet inside her coat pocket, that she normally wears, to retrieve a few dollars for the parish collection. At that point, she discovered her case-wallet missing. Worried now, she searched her coat pockets endlessly but to no avail. After the church services, my mother began to back-trace her whereabouts for her case-wallet. My mother said, that she last remembers holding her case-wallet at the cashier check-out counter in the Safeway Store in Sonoma. Therefore, she returned back to the Safeway Store to inquire if anyone had turned in a small case-wallet. A Safeway customer service employee searched the Safeway Store area (safe, drawers, cashier counters, etc..) but to no avail & advised her that no-one had turned in any case-wallet. My mother called me telling me that she was extremely worried & very concerned over the loss of her wallet telling me she only had a few dollars inside her case-wallet along with her SS Card & VISA Credit Card, Drivers License & Medical Card. I advised my mother to return to the Safeway Store & ascertain from the store manager to review the surveillance tapes. Doing so, the store manager reviewed the surveillance cameras & discovered that another cashier had received the loss case-wallet. At that point, the store manager called the employee on the phone discovering that the employee had taken the case-wallet home because she did not know what to do with it. Eventually, the case-wallet was returned to my mother. I advised my mother to call the credit card number (Credit Union) & report that her credit card number may have been been compromised. My question is this, (1)why would a Safeway cashier employee take home found property that was intrusted to her not forward it to the store manager for safekeeping? (2)What is the Safeway store policy on found property? (3)The Safeway employee now has the opportunity to retrieve the numbers from the credit card to use in some other malicious mischief. I'm very thankful & relieved that the Sonoma Safeway store manager took the moment in helping out my mom in retrieving her case-wallet. read more

Holy guacamole batman! I don't think I've ever been in a Safeway this large. I'm used to the urban San Francisco Safeway experience, with small stores and cramped aisles. Today I picked up several Mexican Saint candles (what is the official name for them?) for $1.50 ea. (hellloooooo gift closet) They have a nice big "Hispanic Foods" section, as well as an interesting Kosher section cheek by jowl with a German section (?) and just about everything you could need for life, really. read more

Utter madness! Small parking lot and always busy calls for a headache of a time for grocery shopping. Vege's most of the time are not fully stocked and look old... People love camping in the aisles and prefer not to move, and good luck finding any help in the deli and or meat section. I usually prefer to stop at Trader Joe's or Lucky's instead. read more

High prices, and a mess are what you can expect here. If I'm coming to Safeway it's because everywhere else is closed. The overnight staff is so rude and unorganized. There are two staff members who work overnights that are nice, if I could remember their names id mention them here. I get that they unload their trucks on the overnights but they unload them so "unorthodox". Pallets blocking off whole aisles, cases littering the whole floor, it's like a minefield. You're lucky if you can push a cart down the aisles. The employees throw cases around like they're performing the shot put at the Olympics. As somebody who works retail it's really kind of startling to see. And this location keys in on its location. The prices are dismal compared to any other store in Sonoma. Try to avoid unless you're loyal to Safeway for some reason. read more

4/22/22 6:42am I had my first unpleasant shopping experience today at Safeway. I had just gotten off of work after a graveyard shift and wanted to run into Safeway where I normally shop for my produce and have been since 2017. I noticed as I was shopping that I'm starting to pick up things that I actually didn't come in the store for and I just so happened to see a cart in the aisle but it had a scanner and some paperwork in it. I took it upon myself to place the scanner and paperwork on a pile of paper towels because I really needed the card. Christina GM Head decided to shout out "Hey! Can you put that stuff back." I said sure and placed everything back and told her I just needed a basket for my items. She coldly said "Okay" with no offer of grabbing me a basket to help. So as I made my way to the register I bumped into Kellie who I shared my experience with. I told her I had just gotten off of work and all I wanted to do was grab a couple of items and that Christina was so rude about not even offering to help me. Even with me telling Kellie that I was already in line and didn't need a basket she still took the initiative to grab one for me and then went above and beyond to open up a register as an apology for my experience. Kellie turned my bad experience into a pleasant one and I really appreciate her coming to my rescue. Christina on the other hand might need a course on how to interact with customers in a positive way. read more

I love this Safeway. EVERYONE in here is very helpful. Super clean. They would have got 5 stars if it weren't for and incident I had in the butcher shop. I had came for a specific amount of chicken & fish and asked the younger butcher to get it for me. Instead of selling me the 5lbs of salmon I wanted he tried to talk me down to a prepackaged 3lbs package of fish.... Uhhhhhh I need 5 pounds bro? Then he did the same thing with the chicken. I was overcharged AGAIN! I don't know why I'm surprised because this has happened every single time I go there. Before I left the store I examined my receipt and was charged $8.99 instead of $4.99 for chicken sliders. This time I decided to do something about it. I waited in line at the customer service desk. There were already 2 people waiting in line and no one was at the desk. The person in front of me had waited 10 minutes and I don't know how long the first person had waited. When the lady ahead of me complained to the manager, the manager said someone called in sick and she can't be 5 places at once. RUDE! By the time the manager got to me, I was a little leery. I explained the error and and she said she needed to find it in the store. I explained I had taken a picture of the item and showed her the pic. She said that normally when they make a price error they give the customer a $5 gift card but they were out of gift cards. She gave me back the difference on the overcharge and gave me an additional $5. TIP: Go to customer service EVERY single time you are overcharged. Accused by female store shift manager, who appeared to be Indian in appearance, of being aggressive towards customers who "did nothing". She called the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, and proceeded to ban me from the premises. There was also an accusation of a "refusal to leave", which because of the SHOPPERS, I ultimately complied. It was an unfair, biased and potentially prejudicial action. Not to mention an obvious, blatant attempt to deflect from the aberrant, antisocial and dysfunctional behavior exhibited. Some of the employees also engaged in certain distressing behaviors, which were captured on camera between at least 6:30pm and 8:00pm. To see this footage, scan the SELF-CHECKOUT area footage between 6:30pm to 8pm. NOT many other shoppers were subjected to this type of distressing experience. You'll also witness, during the course of my transaction, me having difficulty processing various parts of my transaction. This also might be a key point to investigate. Despite the frequent rudeness on display, I've frequently shopped at this Safeway location because of its excellent deals, quality product, and a few employees there treated me decently and humanely while I was a customer there. Unfortunately, the underlying attitudes and conduct exhibited has made it impossible for me to feel safe and, above all, respected shopping there. There were customers who failed to distance properly from me, and store employees alike. Because of these and other persistent and PERPETUAL failures, my safety as a customer was frequently compromised. And, in no uncertain terms, that female manager issued an ultimatum: your business doesn't really count here, so deal with the passive harassment and intransigence, or leave and don't come back. This is the way she, and her subordinates, made me feel, and the instant ban (as opposed to, say, a WARNING) substantiates my aforementioned assessment of this particularly heinous treatment. The harassment was psychological and emotional, and the impact of such will, I'm afraid, be lasting. To this end, I plan to seek treatment AS A DIRECT RESULT of my triggering experiences at this SAFEWAY store, and all legal options will be examined. Submitting this negative review is a second step, with the 1st being that I called in the complaint to the Safeway head office, and it is my sincere hope that this matter will be THOROUGHLY investigated, and that the parties involved will be held responsible for attempting to deflect and disguise the abhorrent and dehumanizing treatment which undoubtedly occurred, but in a less obvious, less explicit form. I regret to say that while I will NEVER shop at this SAFEWAY location again, due to my rights not even being acknowledged, I did enjoy the savings and the very few Safeway employees who made me feel appreciated and valued. read more

I'll try to stay focused on reviewing this Safeway in Sonoma, and not generalize to all Safeway's but its hard to do that with these big corporations. I like that most cashiers here are friendly and talkative. I don't like that a lot of sale items do not come off automatically, and I end up at customer service about 50% of the time, which is wayyy too often. If that wasn't bad enough, I am treated poorly at customer service also about 50% of the time. They act like I'm a criminal because THEIR item rang up wrong and they owe me a refund? Hmmm, not sure I get what that's all about! But that is a Safeway corporation problem in the programming of items for sales. There are always plenty of carts, so that's a plus, and the Starbucks and Jamba Juice inside is another nice bonus. I wish they'd put in self service checkouts because the store gets really really jammed up during peak times. Also, if you are an early morning shopper, it is nice that there is no crowd but the aisles are so full of boxes for restocking that its actually harder to get through the store! I've also been doing a lot of price comparisons and you will be shocked to hear that Whole Foods is cheaper than Safeway more times than not on any organic items. I'll keep shopping here for sale items but not so much for produce or milk. read more

I was in the check-out line last week and there was a sudden power failure. The emergency generator kicked in a few seconds, but the systems needed to reboot, which took some time. But the store responded beautifully -- within a minute they had staff from deli and bakery passing out cookies, fresh fruit and bottled water to those of us waiting. They immediately opened every check-stand to expedite checkout when the systems were restored. Very customer focused. read more

This yelp is for the store director's attention. I am a 'mature' adult who, since March, remains sensitive to shopping in a crowded store. These past few months, I am typically one of the first shoppers into your store. My parking spaces of choice are the 3 spaces to the far left...where employees take smoke breaks. Those 3 spaces provide convenient store access; are free from cross traffic; and close to ramps for grocery carts. These past several weeks, however, the same three (3) cars have been parked...backed in actually...those 3 spaces. They have to be employee vehicles: a white Honda Accord...CA plate # 8PLK152; a silver Subaru MRX...CA plate # 8ARP251. I'll see if the 3rd car is there, again, this week. My point being... shouldn't your store employees be service-oriented enough to know that they should be parking the furthest away from the store...not the closest? read more

This Safeway should be avoided. It's understaffed and service is awful. Long wait for service at the deli and sandwich counters while employees stand in the back room talking or are cleaning windows with a line of five or six people wait in line to be served. Self-check-out is equally as bad. The help station is rarely staffed meaning long wait times when it needs to check your own bags or warns about something else. Seems to happen all the time. This leads to long lines for the self-check-out. Produce is about average, but watch for out of date items on the shelves. Whenever possible I avoid it and buy from Sonoma Market or Lucky. read more

Other than the slighted customer service, I've always been a Safeway fan. They are located conveniently around town and in the city and whenever I need produce on a quick whim, they have a good selection that is pretty fresh and clean. The manager of the Safeway (19th/S St.) in Sacramento is fantastic and always making her rounds and ensuring that if anything needs to happen, she goes above and beyond. I've wrote in to their corporate office to make a note of her awesome customer service. The Produce clerks always make a note of my presence checking out the apple stand and ask if I need any help locating something. I've even stood, perusing the cereal shelves and have had day shift managers ask if I need any help as they continue their rounds of the store. That is customer service that is not expected and well appreciated. We were in town to see the fireworks and after a disappointing search for someplace inexpensive and light for dinner (was not feeling the touristy vibe and the expensive restaurants in the square were not too appealing) we decided to walk over to the Safeway. I adore their Teriyaki wings from the hot deli section and on a short whim, they do a good job in appeasing my appetite. Usually when someone is standing in front of a display, one would be prompted to ask if they need any help. Not in this case. I stood there for ten minutes waiting for the eye contact. I can't stand calling out someones attention unless absolutely necessary. I personally find it rude, sort of like honking. I mean, would I appreciate someone flailing their arms and raising their voice at me? No. I find out that the heat lamps in the hot display had been turned off earlier (they usually close these down around 7:00) and apparently, once they are shut off, nothing can be sold from the hot foods section. Makes sense, probably to ensure quality and compliance with standards. I appreciated his explanation, while he continued spooning the chicken nuggets into a paper bag. However, the fellow stood in front of the sandwich display for more than ten minutes waiting for someone to assist and no one made an attempt to walk over. Was it closed? Did the person leave already? Was the entire deli section closed? In the end, we grabbed sandwiches from the case (ham with Swiss cheese, lettuce, tomato $3.99) and a bag of my fave Lay's Jalapeno Kettle Chips to keep us upright during the wait for the fireworks. In addition, a paper towel roll and some hand wipes to keep the grime away after the mini meal. At the checkout counter, the boy with tats chatted with the girls ahead of me, was silent throughout the ringing of my purchase, and greeted the senior citizen in line behind me. Um. Ok. Huh. 4 stars for my still being a patron of Safeway (and availability of items) overall, but in terms of customer service, a total fail at this store. read more

Safeway has really hit bottom with this location unfortunately and my thought I really need to let them have it I am just disgusted by this location of Safeway. I think personally, that it is a dark, not well lit store, despite a remodel several years ago, and has a parking lot that is off the charts busy all the time. Its so irritating to shop there just for that reason. So frustrating to park there at all times...even on a slow day, its mayhem there it seems? I am always amazed... I was there tonight and finally had to post after thinking about doing so in my last few visits, its just so annoying to shop there. It was 7:30 PM, the deli, suppossed to be open till 10, yet all the lights in the case were being shut off, they were out of 'inhouse roast turkey' again which happens every night (make more!), and I just wonder where the sign was that usually sits on the counter that says "Deli hours XYZ - 10:00" - someone put that away for sure! Last week they were out of turkey for several days because 'the turkeys we were getting were sick' I swear to you that is what the deli person said! (note to self)...they did have a sign at the front door tonight advertising for deli help and oh wow they need it...staff often hides behind the wall in the deli while you wait for them to realize you are there because you don't want to say'excuse me'. It seems like they want you to walk right on by. The check out lines tonight at 7:30 were again amazingly busy, so much so that people were 'oh my goshing' and 'this is ridiculous' with frustrated faces. Even, self check out had a line of five people, and this is a regular occurence at this Safeway. Its just how they operate this store. Its clear to me what is going on at Safeway. They have been sold I think three times in the last seven years, the employees probably don't know what to count on or not, companies make all kinds of promises and they truly only care about the bottomline and stockholders it seems. Safeway is one of those companies where the stockholders obviously now come before quality and service and we are getting smarter as Americans because we have seen things go to crap like service. We know the score now and we are going to call you on it Safeway. Its a brand that has 'been thru the mill' by being sold, new management, old management, layoffs, hiring etc. I am sure if they could outsource it to China, they would. Very disappointing for what WAS a high quality reputation market. I don't blame local management though they will be blamed for this review, when we all know darn well it eminates from the corporate office where the tone is set and resources are allocated. Safeway never has enough staff for the registers, its dark and doesn't seem clean, I hate shopping there - i don't feel good shopping there? I just don't.. Add the parking, and its just a place I don't choose to go unless I have to or crave certain products they sell. I often go to Safeways out of town like Petaluma or Santa Rosa... I should say the food quality seems excellent at Safeway - I love the in store ham and turkey - really really good, and the homemade granola and fruits and veggies are high quality. I do not buy any meat or fish there period. I have never worked for Safeway and have no axe to grind - this place needs a reality check in 2015. Safeway now nicely remodeled, bathrooms way cleaner (so far)! BUT they've dwindled their gift card selection to half to what they used to have. None of the gift cards I need are there anymore. My friend wanted a small piece of cake, already made in the bakery section and when we went to take a look about 80% of them had MOLD, yes, MOLD, growing on all of the strawberries. We all know fruit molds after a period of time, but the peoples job at Safeway it to CHECK the food. It is disgusting and negligent, and i for one, RARELY shop here because they don't have enough organic and free range produce and meat for me. Was never a Safeway fan but looking at the options for everyday shopping here in Sonoma- it's the way to go. As a healthy food customer I'd ditch this as an option. The vegetables section (organic or not) always disappoint. They always go bad before items at other local stores (Sonoma Market + Whole foods) sometimes before I even hit the register. (Not a joke.
