While I used to frequent Fry's and Albertsons in the area, I have found that Safeway has had some better promotions over the last few years. This isn't my family's regular Safeway location but my wife and I do stop by there occasionally, and it is a convenient grocery store on the way home from work. Also, with FreshPass, you can save 5% off pick-ups (up to $5 off). I have appreciated the customer service team at this store with questions regarding in-stock (or out-of-stock) items previously. The customer service employees have been helpful and worked to resolve requests and concerns in the past. I also recall visiting this store when Safeway and Albertsons had their annual Monopoly game way back when and then the Flavor Adventure through the app a few years ago, too. While I haven't taken advantage of the curbside pick-up at this location, I know it is offered here. I do have a membership for FreshPass (which I got this past year at the 50% off promotion). There are great sales from the weekly doorbuster sales to daily promotions to Friday or weekend promotions to general sales prices. For approximately $99 per year (or the occasional $49 promotional price), you can sign up for FreshPass, which includes unlimited free delivery on orders over $30, $5 monthly credit for annual subscribers, earn 2X points on our exclusive brands, save 5% on O Organics, Open Nature, or Signature Pet Care, points don't expire, a VIP phone line, and monthly exclusive Starbucks perks. I really appreciate the $5 monthly credit and the Starbucks perks (to buy a grande-sized drink for only $2 every month). Between those two alone, you more than make back when you spend on the program. While there are certainly things that this store can better do in the future to meet customers' needs, they have already done so much to get there. I was really excited about this store after the remodel as it is the closest store to my house. Needless to say, we have stopped shopping there. The last few times we have gone in, the self check out is FILTHY. Guy sitting at stand not even looking up. No bags replaced. Scanners full of food and debris. I don't even want to set my food on it. It literally does not matter if it is the morning of the day the weekly ad comes out, they will not have any of those sale items out. Looking for the steaks that they have on sale? There won't even be signage up to let you know that the steaks were on sale to begin with. If you ask anyone behind the butcher block to cut you some because the shelves are empty, they'll give you an attitude and then you'll have to wait 10 to 15 minutes and they still won't have any available. As well, any of the floral arrangements in the case are always dead or dying. The flowers are wilted and old. If you're going to charge so much to throw stock together, at least make fresh ones every week? read more

The store has really gone down hill. 10 Am on Saturday there is one checker and a line of 7 people with carts. The older lady was sweet and working hard while other employees walk by doing nothing. There was no management visable and if it wasn't for the respect i had for the lady I would have just left. I have never had that problem at Fry's. The deli at this location did an amazing job assisting me with my order of sliced meats and cheeses for a lunch at my office that served approximately 10 people. The employees in the deli explained which selections were low sodium and which prepared salads would best go with the rest of the food I ordered. Fresh vegetables everything in here is so very fresh. Friendly helpful store staff. The fresh flowers and display is amazing I met the woman who created all of the bouquets. She was making a rose bouquet. It was so beautiful she was so beautiful to me. We chatted for a while. The sushi was so appetizing and colorful. The sell liquor too. I was surprised the prices are half the price from NYC. Cigarettes are $10.00 maybe a lil more. I like the vibe in the store it's not at all like Nyc everyone here is in relax mode. Jeff the man that pushes the karts all day long in the sun had an amazing personality, he was extremely nice and the only worker to be as open and kind. The cashier and bag man, a heavy woman and some older white man, the entire time just blabbered on talking crap of what I'm assuming is a coworker saying she was going to fight someone for telling her to apparently do their job. The individuals with real life problems and disabilities seem to have a different perspective than the lazy non-disabled, diabetic workers. read more

I really haven't ever thought about writing a review about a grocery store I go to. However, I now realize I should. We go to four different grocery stores. Only one, this Safeway at Scottsdale and Shea, still sanitizes every grocery cart before I use it. That is important to us. The Fry's, Sprouts, and Bashas used to, but they don't do so any longer. This Safeway seemed to not always have enough lanes open to check out in. However, since the pandemic started, Safeway has seemingly kept having many lanes open. It is nice because when you have to have social distancing, it blocks up the front of the store. This is an issue that has happened at other stores with us. About a year ago, Safeway started running a few great specials every week, such as butter for 74 cents or avocadoes for 19 cents. Unfortunately, you have to get to Safeway quickly as they are not that good at keeping those specials in stock. The produce at Safeway on Shea is very good. When we lived in a previous city a few years ago, we would find raspberries with mold on them or dairy products for sale after their "sell by" date. The deli is good, it has frequent sales. The bakery puts out some very good rolls and bread. This week we actually bought a cake, probably the first time in many years. It was a one-layer German chocolate cake for $5. It is fantastic. Both my wife and I made the comment of how great the container the cake came in to tightly close and keep the cake fresh. The employees are friendly, the flowers they offer are good and much more reasonably priced than other grocery stores. We really like Safeway! read more

Beyond upset. Safeway is my "go-to" local store. I trusted this store - until today. Customers walking around with no masks and even a bagger wearing his mask incorrectly. I asked him To cover his nose, he said he couldn't because of his glasses. I knew there would be issues even before waking in when I noticed that no one was manning or cleaning the carts. This Safeway store continues to go downhill! I'm officially done shopping here. Not only is this Scottsdale store outdated and dirty, it now has few employees. They typically have only have 1-2 lanes open and push customers to self service, which is annoying when you have a cartload! I also do not recommend women shopping here in the evening because it isn't safe. Last month a man started harassing a woman cashier and wouldn't leave. I told someone to call the police and they ignored me. One of the employees told me that "this store has really changed" and she agreed to have someone escort me to my car for safety! Additionally, they are now hiring employees who barely speak English. I recommend others think twice about shopping here so that Safeway will finally invest in this store, make it safe and people will want to shop here again! read more

Unfortunately, even though this is an affluent neighborhood this particular Safeway at Scottsdale and Shea is probably the worst managed! They are poorly stocked, you have to watch expiration dates and poor quality, very limited organic fruits and vegetables. Deli section: I went in yesterday afternoon at about 3:30 PM to get a rotisserie chicken. There were two whole chickens left in the warmer in the bags and, honestly they were the size of a tiny Cornish game hen! And the price was $7.99. I brought the deli guy over to show him that he even admitted "...yeah they are really small but that's the way they sent them to us." I then went to the manager she looked at it she also admitted they are really small and "...it looks like a Cornish game hen." But then she said there's nothing I can do about the price, I can't change the price. And I commented that she should take them off the shelf then because it's an outrageous rip off to try to sell that tiny little chicken for $7.99! Took pics and called corporate office to alert them. A properly managed store shouldn't have these ongoing issues and should be able to resolve them immediately. read more

We went food shopping at the Safeway at Shea and Scottsdale rd and bought bread from their bakery, that they make there on site. We got home and started dinner. We got out the bread and there was a sewer cockroach in the bread. I called the store and talked to the store manager, she did not care. She did not even act surprised. I have emailed the corporate office with the pictures. I hope they take it seriously. Needless to say I will not shop there again. I hope you think twice before you do. read more

Will not purchase meat or seafood from Safeway ever again! Bought a salmon filet and halibut filet today, brought it home and cooked it immediately. The Halibut ended up smelling fishy and after one bite, tasted even worse. I decided to call Safeway just to let them know that they may want to get rid of the halibut as it's going/gone bad. Not only did the guy not thank me, but seemed putout about me calling. Completely rude, didn't say thank you and not that I care, or asked for it, didn't offer to refund the $10 for the filet! They don't honor prices here. Huge yellow sign said beef was on sale. When I brought up that the price was wrong at the register, they had to send someone to go check to make sure I wasn't lying. A little annoying but understandable. When the lady returns, she confirms the exact price that I told the lady at the register. Now she says "the best I can do is take off 3 dollars." Apparently she couldn't override it to make it the actual price, which I don't believe at all. Thanks for wasting my time. I will be going to Fry's from now on. read more

Safeway is typically my #1 go-to. I like their prices, cleanliness qnd options however, it may not be worth the headache of self-checkout anymore. It is clear where safeway is trying to cut their costs. Everytime I step in, I see multiple employees roaming around the store, yet only one cashier, forcing customers to use the self-checkout which does not work when you have a full basket of cold foods. It takes double the time and since we arent cashiers, I am almost positive they make additional money off us by mistakes of wrong item lookups. I can understand one cashier during the slow hours but during busy times like after work when the store swamped with people trying to get in and out for dinner, I have no idea what they are thinking. I'll preface this review to say that while this is not my "go-to" grocery store, I've been in a handful of times and it has never disappointed. Typically I'll run in for an item or two if I find myself in the area, but most recently, I stopped by here to pick up a couple of balloons for a friend of mine who just had a baby. Bonnie in the floral department helped me out. She was super friendly and provided great customer service. She went above and beyond to make sure that I was satisfied with my balloon selection -- I chose a cute "It's a Girl" balloon and a latex white one to go alongside it -- and put matching ribbon on. She also showed me how to clip the balloons in the car so that they wouldn't be in my way while driving. Thank you, Bonnie! I frequent the Safeway on Indian School and 48th St or the one on Camelback and 32nd St, but this one makes for a great option when I find myself closer to Scottsdale / Shea. If nothing else, go have Bonnie help you with flowers or balloons... that will be sure to brighten your day! read more

I'm not a big fan of this grocery store, I find the selection small and the prices high compared to other grocery stores., but I still come here on occasion because of the proximity. I am rarely ever intrigued by the meat and seafood counter which is ridiculous since I'm on the Paleo bandwagon and those are my main food group options. Even the prepackaged meats are not that appetizing, but when I am in bind - say when I thaw two steaks and come home to find my husband ATE BOTH, I will come here and grab something. The Deli section is probably my favorite area because of the huge sandwiches you can get for a reasonable price. You will also find the rotisserie chickens in this area along with a sushi station. From the bakery section, I have only ever gotten caramel apples which were decent, but it is few and far between that they are even available. I do appreciate the pretty flower section in the produce department although I have never purchased any items from there, its still nice to look at. The store itself is always clean with a full Starbucks inside and the staff again are either hit-or-miss. Every time I have been here there only seems to be one check-out cashier present so most of the time I end up going to one of the four self-check out stations which is a huge negative for me. If I wanted to play cashier, I would revert back to age 6 with my Fisher Price plastic check-out stand! Bottom line: its a grocery store, you can get the necessities here, but if you need any speciality items or higher quality health food items you are out of luck. read more

The waffle Donut has arrived. Yes, it is a waffle with some chocolate icing on top. It is dense and really not that great, but a nice invention. The rest of the store is fairly typical Safeway, but the staff is quite friendly here. Jose the self-check-out cashier is a good guy and many others are helpful as well. The staples I need are all WAAAAAY too expensive - I have NEVER found a "good deal" on anything here. This store is horribly organized and has a tiny selection, along with the price hike that I've come to expect at any Safeway. Take this fun quiz to see how Safeway-savvy you are! Q: Where would you find crushed tomatoes? A: Well, at any normal grocery store, they're with the canned vegetables. At Safeway, they're tucked away in the Mexican food aisle. Q: What size options are there for crushed tomatoes? A: At most places, anywhere from 8 to 28 ounces, with 14.5 ounces being the "normal" size. At Safeway, your only option is 28 frigging ounces. Who the hell needs that much?! Also aggravating: they only have about 4 checkout aisles and no self-checkout. Remind me never to go there again. read more

It's 2019 and reusable bags have been a thing for quite some time now. But I am just wondering why so many store clerks are still confused by them and why the checkout lady at Safeway today placed all 8 of my items into 4 separate plastic bags (strawberries and bananas each got their own bags) and then placed the 4 plastic bags into my large reusable bag? * I wish I caught it sooner, but my 2-year old distracted me so I didn't notice the clerk did this until I went to pay. Then I told her I didn't want plastic, that's why I brought the bag, so we removed the items, placed them into the reusable and then she proceeded to throw the plastic bags into the garbage. ‍. * This was incredibly infuriating. As someone who is trying to help the environment by reducing/eliminating plastic bag use, I feel like store management needs to better train their employees to think outside the box and if plastic bags are being used, all items don't need their own damn plastic bag but can be packed together! (Not a new concept people). Go to Trader Joe's where employees know how to pack bags, both paper and reusable. Or even Sprouts where the employees understand what a reusable bag is. Is there a reason you have only ONE cashier working every morning? There was line of ten people waiting, the lady checking out was having issues with her debit card and the manager comes to help him out and then just walks away and continues to keep ONE cashier working. I didn't have the time to wait 30 years so left my items right there and walked out. Every Safeway I've been to never has enough people working, there are constantly lines and for whatever reason they remain understaffed without any type of "self check out" it's a pain and enough to make me never want to shop there again. read more
