Went to Safeway for broccoli and Impossible or Beyond Meat which according to their website they have at this location . They were out of broccoli (!!!) and I spent like 10 minutes looking for the meat. So I asked an employee and they looked at me like I was crazy and just pointed halfway down the store to the meat section I had already been studying. I never do this but I just left my cart with stuff in it and walked out. I know the employees are just a reflection of how Safeway runs their business, but I have officially had it. Never again. 1 Star I've been shopping at this Safeway on Monterey since I was a kid, but lately it's become one of the most uncomfortable shopping experiences in the city. The store itself is a mess -- cluttered aisles, wilted produce, and expired food sitting on the shelves. Prices rarely match what's listed, and the overall vibe is just off. What really pushed me to write this review, though, is how the staff, management, and security behave. They constantly lurk around the aisles and corners, making sarcastic or rude remarks like they're trying to get under my skin. It's gone beyond awkward -- it feels like targeted harassment. I've even noticed them setting off the beer alarms every time I go to the register, and more than once a security guard has stepped in front of the entrance doors as I was walking in, stopping them from opening. It's weird, uncomfortable, and completely unprofessional. I used to love this place, but it's turned into an unpleasant, tense environment where customers don't feel welcome. I have never left a review for a grocery store before but I feel compelled to in this instance. They seem low on stock for basic things like bottled water entire shelves empty, so if you coupon at all you're not going to find the specific item that's discounted here. There's basic things missing like ginger. They had skinned ginger which works for me but I've never gone to a grocery store that didn't have normal ginger. The aisles are super thin I feel like I'm squeezing through sf streets in the comfort of my own supermarket. Lastly, the self checkout clerk takes her job way too seriously. Usually you can profile someone by what they're wearing and not take minutes analyzing the security footage, but for example I just scanned all my items inside my cart with the portable scanner and then bagged after any the security camera just freaked out and she watches these videos fully. And lastly to leave I have to scan my receipt, wtf? I've never been treated like more of a crook than this mission Safeway. Lastly, there is no parking. And if you try to take the cart more than 30 feet out the store the carts lock up. read more

I said "Excuse me where are your candles"She looked me up and down with a funky face and didn't say anything. Then I said "You don't work here got it", and walked off.Then she said, "AYE! candles 3" it was unpleasant. I had asked the person at the register "excuse me? he cut his eyes toward me instead of saying hello or yes as I ask him where were the birthday candles and he finally let me know where they were. First I must say that this is the worst Safeway in California. I usually shop in Westlake safeway, but today I failed to go to Westlake. I paided the price! First I went to the deli to ask about the sandwich specials of the month. You need to know that 90% of the deli employees do not speak or understand English . They know me because I have made multiple complaints about their poor service. The did not disappoint this time either. I won't bore you with the details but basically they ignored me and chose to talk among their piers. The one lady was actually having a personal conversation with her ear buds in on phone! I finally just grabbed some sushi because I was starving. I had a full grocery list so I proceeded to the neat section. A security guard approached me and proceeded to basically accuse me of eating with no intention of paying. Needless to say I became irate. I told him he needs to focus on all the people walking out the door with armloads of food ! Finally he left me alone after I told him to please call the police. I would love to speak with them. There is alot more to this story but I'm sick of even giving that Safeway my energy. Oh and when I got to the register some checker was leaning against the counter on his personal cell call. When I asked if he was open he ignored me! I asked him again and he muttered like a rude teenager that he was open. At that point I backed out of his stall and went to other checker. There are no hand baskets to speak of so it's either carry everything by hand or put everything in a cart. While at the checkout register I had to go back to the aisle to replace a bag of flour which had exploded on the conveyor belt. They wouldn't just let me run back to the front. Worst experience at a Safeway! Was accused of stealing after a cashier messed up. The employee "Mar" let the previous customer who she shared was her "sugar daddy" leave without paying for the items he got. Then she left it on our tab and the only reason why we noticed is because I wanted to enter my number for the reward system. She then acted surprise when my partner asked why beers were on our tab and whose number was entered. She then stated it was Marisol's reward account when my partner questioned whether that was her account considering her name tag has "Mar" on it she did not respond. We then stated that we would like to enter our number since we have clipped deals and would like to gain the rewards. She then made it a big deal that she would have to re-ring everything up and seem hesitant when we requested for that to happen. She then told a coworker to make sure that we don't leave any bags behind in the cart when she re rings everything since I was placing more bags when there was more space since not all of them fit. So she basically tried to insinuate that we would steal. Not only allowing a customer to leave without paying, but then putting it on another person's bill. Even though at first we understood that it was just a mistake but When she tried to accuse us of stealing the whole situation shifted. She just tried to over charge us for items that was not ours. Not once did she apologize nor did a manager when they came over to allow her to void and restart. Very unprofessional and not okay! Make sure to check your receipts because considering how she acted, I'm sure this is not the first time that this has happened. I've come here for many years and I am very disappointed how this situation was dealt with and how it was disregarded. read more

Yelp screwed up and combined my review of the Bernal Heights Safeway with this one as an update, but Yelp doesn't allow you to remove the "older" review first, so I had to delete this review and the original misplaced review before I could re-post this one in the right place. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is the most poorly designed Safeway I've ever been to. Scratch that, it's the most poorly designed supermarket I've ever been to. The first thing that will jump out at you is that the parking lot is on the side of the store rather than in front of it. That wouldn't be so bad, except there's no side entrance, so you have to walk through the parking lot and onto the sidewalk to get into the store. I visited at night, and there were some scary-looking people hanging out in the parking lot and on the sidewalk. Once you get into the store, it seems a little bit better. They seem to have remodeled it recently, and it was clean for the most part (hence the extra star). But then you run into your next poor-design feature--and this is true at many Safeways--a completely unintuitive and downright confusing store layout. I was looking for pretzels and expected to find them in the aisle with the potato chips. They were in that aisle, but I had looked in the crackers and cookies aisle believing that snacks were snacks. Apparently, that's not the case; crackers are five aisles away from potato chips. The final poor-design feature is arguably the worst one: a complete and utter lack of space for checkout lines. I understand that real estate is at a premium in San Francisco and that its supermarkets are, for this reason, more cramped than in other places. I can understand narrower aisles, but why would you make everyone waiting in line block the entire space behind all the cash registers? I expect this kind of thing from Trader Joe's but not from Safeway. And it's not as if I was there at a busy time; it was ten p.m. on a Sunday. read more

Then there the safe way at 4950 Mission st, I got home and found that the pork, chicken and bacon were either out of date or would be the following day. That's some good management! Absolutely the worst grocery store I've ever been to. The new security "upgrades" make it feel like a really crappy airport...and you may get frisked or trapped by metal bars and gates if something happened and there was a panic. Also the self-checkout receipt scanning gate was insulting but also clearly a waste of their money as it's been broken for over a month now. I'll bet they've already spent way more money on security garbage than what their product losses would have been had they not implemented the new $y$tem! Always super long lines. Generally you can't find someone to make a sandwich, and if you can, they don't know their own recipes and are always out of ingredients. How is a grocery store out of blue cheese or havarti? Forget trying to buy toiletries or a bottle of wine without a 30 minute wait and having to flag down someone to open the locked shelves, despite using the button several times. I don't even bother trying to purchase those items at Safeway anymore, and I'll bet their sales have tanked in those departments. This is our absolute last resort grocery store! read more

It can get busy at this Safeway. They usually have everything I need, which is a good one shop stop. Seems to me they are usually understaffed, but it is apparent that they try their best to make everyone's experience pleasant. Many times I've been checked out by Justin when the line piles up. Today I found out he was the manager, and I felt inclined to write this review specifically for his excellent customer service. I recently received WIC benefits and I am still trying to navigate with what products are allowed with WIC purchases. He was able to help me with my return since I noticed I bought a few things that weren't deducted from my WIC balance. He even grabbed the eligible options for me to choose from at guest services. There happened to be another guest who stood behind me in line while I was applauding his customer service who also agreed, and said "isn't he the best? Justin is the best manager!" And I have to absolutely agree. He went above and beyond for me today. At the end of the day, with any brick and motor store - I have to say it is all about building those relationships through superb customer service. See you next week Justin! read more

One of my least favorite Safeways next to the one at Market and Church. The lines here are consistently super slow and long. It's usually pretty busy here too. They have all the usual things that you would need to get from a grocery store but I would literally drive farther away just to escape the long lines that are had here. read more

I want to give it 5 stars because of a recent transaction I've had with 2 staff members. They're were really nice. I walked around looking for some popcorn powder flavor thing. Couldn't find. Went to the front and asked a lady but she wasn't sure if the store even have it in stock. Next to her was a younger guy staff, she asked him and he told me they're at this aisle left side on the top. He was right. But what he forgot to mention was- IT WAS ALL THE WAY AT THE TOP! Mind you, I'm not that tall. Other times, you get no help. That's the minus 2 stars. So it's half half. This location is always busy! ALWAYS!! Lines are always long! Just long!! Even the 15 or less items line. Even the self check out line. This location is literally in the SMACK in middle surrounding of houses! Their shelves are always stocked! But once a good sale on certain items are hot, like eggs, yogurt, shrimps and pork ribs, don't even bother coming after 10am. They'll be all gone. I don't even bother to check and just go to a further one like- Monterey, Taraval/19th or sunset/Noriega. I like that all locations have a parking lot. This one is mild small for such busy location, they need to expand. read more

Went around 10PM to purchase some cough medicine for my mom. Everything was locked up, which I understand, but very inconvenient for me to see what the active ingredients are and the dosage. An Asian male employee in their late teens/early twenties walked by the isle and asked if I needed help getting anything out of the locked cabinets, to which I replied yes. He opened it up and I grabbed two Mucinex bottles to compare. To look at the dosage of each active ingredient in the bottle, I had to peel back the information sticker on the back of the bottle. I had a hard time getting the sticker to unravel so I used my nail to pick at one of the corners. After I got it to open and I'm looking for the dosage, the employee says to me "please don't damage our property." I'm taken aback because I'm not damaging their property. So I tell him I'm looking for the active ingredients and their dose. He replies, "you ripping off the sticker is damaging our property." SIR. THE WHOLE POINT OF THESE STICKERS ARE TO PEEL OFF TO READ THE DRUG INFORMATION AS LABELED ON THE STICKER ITSELF. SIR!??! One Mucinex bottle contains acetaminophen (Tylenol) and one doesn't. I needed to know how much was in it because my mom is already taking a large dose and I don't want her to take over the daily amount. With this guy breathing down my neck, I "rushed-bought" both bottles. I've attached photos of the two medicine bottles with red highlights of instructions to view drug facts and information, not me damaging their property. read more

It's not really fair to give this place a bad review in my opinion. The people that work there are great, they're starting to get to know me as a guy who orders salt & vinegar, chicken wings at 7:30 in the morning. Which by the way, if you've ever tried them... I HIGHLY recommend you do. The best thing to do though is to call the deli and ask them to make it for you fresh. If you are a lover of all things, salt and vinegar, you will absolutely find these wings, magnificent. no, yes, there is a certain negative light to this Safeway and the other Safeway in Mission... but that is just the world we live. I noticed that things are locked up, I noticed that you have to scan your receipt in order for you to leave, and I noticed that there is heavy security. As extra as it is, it's just a necessity. All that aside, I enjoy going to the store because there is parking, and rarely have I've been in any type of line. read more

Well I'm updating my review I spoke to John a couple days ago the manager he said he would take care of the Bugs infestation in the Bakery area and he sure did I went over there today, and it looks so clean fresh donuts pastries a lot better than it did 2 days ago. He asked me if I would come back shopping I told him no because I didn't like the employees confertation, he said well I would like to pay for your groceries so I'm like oh okay we'll see he paid for my breakfast items. I'm a fan of shopping at smaller markets, but sometimes you just have to go to Safeway. You don't want to, but you just need certain things. Although some of the people here are nice, I often opt for going to the one in Diamond Heights or the one in the Excelsior. I've been coming here for years and it's by far the worst Safeway ever. It attracts beggars outside the store, homeless people stealing and the selection is a hit or miss. The store is really small, the location sucks and for some reason if you buy milk here - it will go bad way before the expiration date. Rather than cry over spoiled milk, I would just like to tell you there are much better places to shop. read more

Nice store located on the transition between Bernal-Heights and the Mission. If you just focus on the displays and the quality of the items in the store, it is pretty good. The locked cabinets protecting the liquor is evidence that this place might experience a higher than average level of shrink, and the shopping carts have electronic proximity sensors that disable them from rolling freely when they leave the store, making them useless on the streets. Parking is free and ample unless you arrive at peak hours, and the staff are friendly and helpful. The lines do seem to get long pretty quickly. Prices are pretty good too! read more

Worst Safeway I have shopped at in a very long time. They don't seem to know what they're doing or have enough staff to cover simple customer service. Their batteries are behind a locked door. There's a button to request for someone to come and unlock the door, but all employees ignore it. Ten minutes pass by and there's still no one there so I head to customer service where there's only one person staffed with insufficient knowledge on how to solve somebody else's issue. After waiting an additional 20 minutes in line for them I was finally able to buy my $3.50 battery from the locked case. read more

I am grateful that this Safeway is in the neighborhood. It is one of the few remaining grocery stores in the area. It is on a smaller footprint than other grocery stores. As a result, it tends to get busy. Sometimes there are not enough cashiers, but they do their best. I don't blame the employees for that. The asian store manager (name?) is fantastic. If it gets busy, she jumps right in and helps. She is also friendly and accommodating with returns etc. The store has improved since she came along. This store is not the prettiest, but it is a mainstay in the neighborhood. There are many seniors that use this store, but cannot drive, so this store is important to them. read more

This inner city Safeway is probably the dirtiest most unsanitary store I have come across. It was my first and last time I will go to this unsafe rude little bastion in the outer Mission barrio. It is as dirty inside as it is outside the front side walk. Steer clear from this one please. Especially the pharmacy manager who I saw belittle an elderly woman trying to set up her prescription. I just happened to peruse the produce section and walked into a dingy corner area where there was a security guard languishing leaning on a stack of water supply, when I over heard a pharmacy employee call for the pharmacist manager to help a woman who could barely speak. The young manager aggressively & rudely demonized a poor elderly woman for not having all the correct health cards for her prescription. I was stunned. The way he spoke to dispatch her and shove her aside was seamless and spontaneous as if he did it all day to those in need. The young pharmacy manager had no compassion nor helpful answers to assist that senior woman. He was terse, spoke so fast and told her step aside and come back when she had her insurance cards. Sadly she walked out of the store not before another senior told her to go to the Geneva Pharmacy(?) As we swung around to the deli no one spoke well enough english to answer our simple questions. We ordered prosciutto but no one knew what it was until a safeway store manager showed us a pack of 8 piece pack hanging in a display display case. We decided to go elsewhere. As we left the store we passed a tired sleepy security guard by the front door, who was holding a conversation to the slowest express lane cashier in the world. On the street we encountered a few hawkers trying to sell incense and lighters on a dirty clothed table that stood in the span of blackened sticky concrete as everyone exited or entered the store. It was hard to tell which was cleaner, the inside or the outside? I suppose all safeways throughout the San Francisco are all the same. Rude, dirty, unsanitary, foul smelling fish and meat department, steam inside the bread bags, donuts in the cabinet looked like they were all touched by many hands, staff were flailing and it wasn't even busy. The Mayor should close this congested disgrace down. The community can be better served than this eyesore and blight of horrible pharmacists, service workers who reflect what the real San Francisco is like. We will never come back to San Francisco. Even though my profile says otherwise, I am an SF Native. I have been shopping at this Safeway for well over five years and usually get along with the staff there. A lot of them are awesome, however, my experience there today was horrible. I purchased groceries there like I normally do, however, due to the line once again extending all the way down the aisle( which has become commonplace there) I decided to use self-checkout, I make eye contact with security at the front door, and the lady running the cash register at self-checkout. I pay my bill using my debit card, grab my receipt, and start bagging my groceries. While I was putting them in my bad one of the items accidentally tapped the scanner, so I called the attendant over to reset the terminal so the next person could use it. She then asks me to pay $9.99 for an item that I already previously paid for, I then go on to inform her that I already did pay for the item and produced my receipt. She scans the receipt and then asks to me pay $9.99 for a cheese platter that I had already paid for(clear as day on the receipt). I am livid by this point especially being an African American male and being put on the spot like this in the middle of the store. At this point, she starts doing the whole your a thief dance and begin to treat me like a criminal. I asked for the manager and she refused to get one for me. She then goes on to say I owe her $9.99 again. I am angry as hell about this for the following reasons. 1. I shop at this store all the time 2. Safeway now overcharges for everything, at the least you should make sure your customer base gets respected and treated well. 3. Either the woman can't read or she was racist as hell and was racial profiling. I guarantee she would not have played the same game with any other nationality that entered the store and ended up in the same situation. 4. Being black doesn't mean you are a thief, sick and tired of being treated this way when I am having to trade my hard-earned money for that kind of treatment Even worse, I go home and try to call the main number on the receipt in and try to contact customer service, in an attempt to report the attendant for what she had done, and of course, no one picks up. A typical shitty customer service cause we are in the wrong zip code. I get it our Safeway isn't located in Twin Peaks, so of course, we don't deserve to be treated properly Just another sign of how SF has changed. The level of racism in SF has skyrocketed. P.S. Agreeing with all the other bad reviews on customer service, I never experienced a Safeway with little to no service. The self-checkout machines are faulty, when my transaction is very simple. The cashier helping out at self-checkout kept talking to his co-worker not acknowledging the customers. Then there is no one at customer service. When there was, the staff suddenly gathered all around me like in a meeting when they were supposed to follow 6- feet distancing protocol. Another lady was complaining at the customer service desk on how the workers in the floral department won't stop talking to each other instead of servicing customers... in conclusion they need more training on customer service and management. read more

This is my go-to Safeway store. It has a decent size, not the biggest but surely not the smallest Safeway that I have been to. This place has had its bad days but it had been getting better and better since the renovation years ago. I have seen more new teammates joining this store which prompted more positive vibes in this store. The self check-out counters certainly have reduced the wait time. Though, it truly depends on who is on duty overseeing the area. One lady can surely make you feel stupid with her body language and her tone of voice. The rest of the people that work here are cool. Even though it does not open 24/7 anymore, bring opened till midnight is still convenient for the neighborhood. Having grown up in the Bay Area and been to many Safeways, I can confidently say this is the worst one in existence. I came in and saw the usual displays of flowers and fruit, so I felt like I was in a safe place. But it was a trap. All the shampoos, soaps, shaving cream, and some detergents are locked behind glass cases where you need to ask an employee to open. But look around -- there are no employees. In fact, the only two employees in the store are running two checkout lines, each with over 20 people waiting. If you actually want groceries and soap, try the 14th St. Safeway (Duboce Triangle), which you can also reach on the J Church line. read more
