Needed sweet treats. 11:09 PM. Most other stores? Closed. Boarded up. Abandoned. Cold. Empty. Safeway? Currently under construction.. couldnt find the entrance initially, but a gorgeous beacon in the night. Small, honestly humbling, candy section. I felt big and greedy just looking at it. This is it? Really? I chose a pint of Non Dairy Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia instead. Sometimes, we have to make compromises in life. Convenient distance from nearby college housing. Honestly, a lot closer than our usual grocery store. Later this night, I dreamt I was on Yelp, reviewing this Safeway location. After thoughtful consideration, 3 Stars. I woke up today and decided to make this dream a reality. 3 Stars. read more

My family and I stopped into this Safeway location to grab a couple of things for the week after having lunch at Buckhorn Grill next door. This Safeway is located in the UV Shopping Center on Howe Ave. We were immediately greeted by beautiful pink flowers in the floral department and a Valentine's Day display. We grabbed Chobani Yogurt which was on sale for $.99 each including the Flips and Ben and Jerry's pints for $2.99 (maximum of 4 per customer). A lot of items were on sale which was nice so we ended up getting out of there for under $100 which is rare. Store was clean and employees were nothing special - I don't even remember how the checkout clerk was. I think it was a brief interaction at best. Overall, this Safeway location is convenient and we will be back next time we are in the area. read more

Pretty standard Safeway. Lots of parking available. Staff was very friendly. I didn't like they a lot of their medication and personal care items were locked up. I had to ask for someone to unlock the cabinets for me to buy mouthwash. I assume they must have a big theft issue. The store was well stocked, clean and brightly lit. read more

This store is in pretty bad shape. I shop at Safeway's pretty frequently, and Im always surprised at how run down this store is. Tiny, cramped isles, peeling linoleum, busted out freezer and cooler doors around the store. The store just has a very dated worn out vibe to it. Staff are always friendly, and the selection is basic Safeway. So there is most everything you need here. It's still a fine store overall. Im just surprised that Safeway, as a company, has stores this dilapidated. read more

I stopped in while I was in the area to pick up some bread and was able to easily find a parking spot and head inside. It was interesting that the door they had set for the entrance was a single small door, I had to walk over a few sets of doors to reach it. It makes me wonder if they're having trouble with shoplifting or if something else is going on. Inside they were well stocked and had the bread I was looking for. I also picked up a couple other items. The self checkout was easy to navigate and I was in and out of the store pretty quickly with everything I needed. read more

I usually find Safeway to be a bit expensive, but I do shop here when they have great coupons. If you look at the attached coupon, I bought all this stuff for just a dollar! It's definitely worth it when you can snag deals like this. The store is clean, and the staff is friendly, which makes for a pleasant shopping experience. read more

I shop at this store on a regular basis. It has it's shortcomings, but overall it meets what I am looking for. All over now. A very simple thing like handles on a sturdy paper bag makes a difference. Yep. My last trip ended with a paper bag breaking while I was loading my groceries into my car. The items I just paid for were now on the parking lot. Never mind the hassle of having to carry one bag at a time into my home with bags without handles. I asked one of the checkout people why there were no handles on the bags. "Cutting costs". I too want to cut costs. Not at the expense of picking my food up from your parking lot or in my driveway. Too many grocery store options in my neighborhood to put up with this nonsense. read more

I came to the deli meat department around 6:30, standing for a good 5 minutes. When it was mine turn was order the deli person . The little short white men told me they can't cut anymore meat since they close the deli at 7pm. So you telling me you can't cut me a small piece of meat . WOW horrible service !!!! You can fry fresh chicken at 6:30, but can't cut no meat. read more

We took my nieces here to pick up a birthday cake for their mom. The bakery was closed by the time we got there but another team member stopped by, and assisted us in our cake selection. Since the bakery was closed, there was no way for us to write on the cake so he thought of the best idea -- buy frosting and do it ourselves. As you can see in the photos, we tried our best. Fun times. Awesome memory. P.S. the Safeway is a smaller store so there are some items they don't carry. read more

This review is for the Safeway on Howe bakery. I ordered a custom graduation cake over the phone and I spoke with a nice man who made sure to repeat the specifications back to me for clarity and understanding. On pick up day I went into Safeway and the baker, who I believe her name was Angela said "Can I help you with something?" in an irritated tone. I gave her the name of the order and when she opened the box, the colors on the cake were incorrect. I told her that we asked for the frosting of the cake to be sage green, the same as the lettering on the cake. She immediately became defensive and said that is not what the order said. I asked to see the order note from the man who took my order and she gave me the note while still claiming that we did not make that request. I clearly pointed out the note at the bottom about the colors. She paused and said "Oh, well I didn't read that because I know what the customers want and I don't need all of these details that he wrote down...I don't have time to redo this, it's my busiest day." No apology. No accountability. Just proceeded to blame her colleague for the note and claim that she is the only person at the Safeways in town that can do heart shaped cakes. Respectfully, no one cares. Please take ownership of your mistake and at least apologize to the customer and show empathy. She said we could either leave the cake or she could knock off a few dollars from the fresh fruit filling used. She continued on with "I've never disappointed my customers, next time come talk to me directly." There will be no next time. We ended up taking the cake with the discount but left very disappointed, not just at the cake, but at the attitude and lack of accountability from Baker Angela. Have never had a bad experience at this Safeway, but it's safe to say that I will not be returning or recommending this locations bakery department. read more

I was experimenting with a new recipe and needed specialty spices and cheeses. Safeway had everything I was looking for, and the staff even showed me where to find imported items. Some Safeway markets are very good, but some are very outdated. This one on Howe and Fair Oak are one of the older Safeway but remodel a few years ago. The store looks pretty nice inside with Softer lighting. The store looks bright and comfortable. The employees in this store are friendly. The groceries are fresh and other merchandises are very good and organized very well. However, the parking lot at this location is smaller than the demand in this location. The parking lot is shared with a few more businesses. But finding parking is always not very easy at this Safeway. The best time to shop at this location is before 11:30 am or after 7 pm. I'm sure the shopping experience will be much more enjoyable. read more

I have been shopping at this safeway for over 30 years. Their customer service has consistently declined. The workers are apathetic and unfriendly; except for Antoinne, the butcher and management. This was the best store around until last week when they decided they could give an F less about the workers who work late on weekends so other people can party and eat now they close at 12 and il never shop at this Safeway again. This is a long overdue review for a cashier named "Pandora." We have had great customer service with her every time we end up in her line. She goes above and beyond to help you when using your Safeway membership and phone app. Our first experience with her was when we were purchasing a special from the meat department. She must have noticed I left my son in line and went to make sure I had scanned the special on the meat. When I came back and before I was going to input my number she stopped me! She asked if I had scanned my coupons and had everything in my phone. I said I had but then she showed me how to go to the wallet of the app where my member card was located. She proceeded to scan that card and then boom! Items that were on sale began to appear plus that meat special. Pandora explained that in order for customers to get the special discounts you needed to scan the membership card after you upload your coupons but before you input your number. She explained how during the holidays she had customers complaining that the special prices were not being deducted. She had to cancel many transactions and redo them so customers could get the appropriate discounts and explained why they were not getting the special price. After she helped us the customer behind us was also interested in getting help with the correct way to get the discounts on certain items. Pandora deserves special recognition for her service and helping her customers get the best deal at Safeway and using the app. read more

Not the first time I get nasty bell peppers. I go to Raley's now, but Safeway was on my way home this time. This place is just a disappointment. I was there at 6pm today 10/3/2024, one register open. A line a mile long. I asked the lady who was an employee, are you guys going to open another register? She said "no" and walked off. Finally getting through the line, I realized that half and half was $6 for a half gallon. If Safeway wants to charge those kind of prices, perhaps they should stop treating people who are paying for their groceries like it is a welfare store. It is not the Nugget, not Corti's. Just over price for groceries and service. It really was a reality check. Don't shop there read more

Great experience at this location. Always friendly staff members and readily to help assist customers. Our family visit this location on Saturday. A lot of items on sale for great prices. We got ballpark franks for 88 cents. Can sodas 12pk 4/$10. Absolutely good deal for memorial weekend deal. Going through aisle was no problem. Finding items was easy to get to. I find that this safeway have a lot of polite/friendly fellow shopper as well. Which made our grocery shopping experience even more wonderful. We went to the 15 items or less checkout. We thought we had less than 15. But, the young man still greeted us and very helpful. Another lady saw us had 3 bags of chips and she came over to tell us that is buy 2 get 3 free. (I read the sign wrong) if we didn't get 2 more bags it wouldn't ring up right. She was so sweet! I hurriedly to grab two more bags. She just have the young man rung up two more. Told us that time to time there are really good deals on meats too. Too bad I didn't get her name. A lot of times cashier would not tell us if we didn't get the correct promo deals or they're not informed anout promos. But, she went above and beyond! Also, there was a tall man standing more than 6ft. Awah from us. He might be the manager. It is nice to see that he want to make sure if there is any problem he can assist. We will def be back to shop here again. Outstanding staff members and friendly atmosphere. read more

I bought several packages of country style ribs because there was no pork shoulder on display and no one behind the butcher counter to ask. I went to pick up 2 cakes, that my partner ordered online, at this Safeway today. The cake decorator, Lu, showed me the cake. It looked like a 5 year old made it. Nothing like the pics showed online. I showed her the pics, and she told me she'd fix it. She took it to the decorating area, and as I was waiting for 15 mins, I noticed she was walking back and forth to and from cake ordering book, to look at the pic. I saw her finally just take the page out and take it with her. I got the feeling maybe she wasn't sure what she was doing, or maybe new. I went up front, and asked the manager Dan to talk to who ever is in charge of the bakery. He called Rob up. I explained to Rob what was going on, how long I have been waiting already, and that I haven't seen the second cake yet. I was worried I'd have to wait much longer if the second cake needs to be fixed. Rob pulls out the second cake for me and it looked just as bad! I said to him, "you can't tell me that this looks good?" His response was, "well it's a better job than what I could have done:" Well obviously! I informed him that I'm childhood friends with the person who over sees the bakery department for Safeway headquarters, and I would be sending her these pics. He said okay. Then he tells me, "best I can offer you is half off." I told him that obviously he's left me no choice but to buy these cakes considering my partner's office staff was waiting for them, but I'm very embarrassed to show these to them. Rob once again was not apologetic, and said best he can do is half off and kind of shrugged his hands like, "oh well." At that point I asked for his managers name and information, so I can call on him. His response was, "well if you're friend works for head quarters, why don't you call and get that info from her?" I was floored! So yes, I did call my friend. He disappeared as I was on the phone with her. About 10 mins later he came out and apologized and gave them for free. Rob should not be in charge of a grocery store if he is that rude and doesn't know how to problem solve. As a business owner, and previous grocery manager myself, I would have never talked to a customer the way he spoke to me. I will never be back. read more

I called customer service today about a self checkout employee named Karisma. She is consistently rude, aggressive, and disrespectful to Black/African-American Safeway customers who use the self check out option at the University Village location. Her behavior is difficult to describe, she will force interaction with Black customers and allow all other customers to check out without interruption. I am sick of it, this is the third time. Although I reported her to the Safeway customer service number, I felt the need to leave this review. I am really concerned about the treatment of Black/African-American customers at this Safeway. It pains me when we are treated this way, and it is clear that a discrimination lawsuit should straighten out the Safeway staff. read more

This Safeway sucks. Their frozen aisles are very lack luster compared to others, like the one on Del Paso Rd. We came in tonight looking for El Monterey burritos and there were no where to be found. I walked down the aisles several times and couldn't find them. I thought maybe they just ran out since they were on sale, but I found the burrito section and the other El Monterey items and saw no tags for their burritos! Lame. My boyfriend and I went to look for fresh produce and veggies looked old and sad. They didn't have many bananas either and what was out was overly ripe. I went through the meat aisle and didn't see any chicken breast, but I will say their prices for chicken thighs were fairly good. My boyfriend and I don't live in the area and drove 15 minutes away to come to this Safeway to not purchase a single thing on our grocery list. We gave up after about 10 minutes and just left. Don't waste your time and just drive to the other side of the road to the Raley's! It's much nicer and has many more options. read more
