This is a nice Safeway, the parking is just a bit rough. There are spots in the lot, but since it's such a busy area getting a spot can be hit or miss. We mostly stop by when we need a couple quick items while walking through the area, or driving past (if we can find a spot). For people who live in the local apartments though, it's perfect. The doors to enter are right by the produce section and the grocery store is large and well stocked. You exit further down from the entrance, after you make your way through the checkout area. On my latest visit I learned that this Safeway carries dry ice and that they have a Pokemon vending machine. Although, someone was camping out by the vending machine waiting for it to restock. While this is a nice grocery store, it's not one that I would go out of my way to visit unless I was super local. read more

This Safeway location is super convenient on my way home from work - located on R Street in Midtown. I like that this location has a private parking lot and you don't have to deal with downtown street parking. They have a great floral section - I stop in before work any time I need to get flowers or a plant for a coworker. During our last visit, we stopped in for a couple essentials and also saw that they were having a $5 special on their Chicken Wings - we got 3 different flavors plus Mac and Cheese and Potato Wedges. It was all for under $30! The staff was super friendly and gave great recommendations. They also had a $5 special on Sushi Rolls as well. Overall, the are always well stocked and organized. I love their $5 deals on Mondays! read more

Safeway - inside view - Grocery Near Me - Sacramento, California

Today was our big outing to Safeway. We came to this particular Safeway because they have the DMV kiosks. We needed to renew our registration. It's that time of year again. Going to the DMV is such a hassle and you can no longer get a number and talk to an agent to renew your registration on site. They will direct you to one of there kiosks on site for you to do it. So if you aren't a kiosk lover you're out of luck. You can also renew by paper, just tear off the bottom of the paper and mail it in with your check, but that takes time. Using this Safeway Kiosk is instant, you give them your credit or debit card and you're in and out in no time. You don't even need the paper they sent you to renew your registration on site. I have to say there is something glitchy with the yelp app. I took around 10 pictures today and only 3 pictures stuck. Too bad, they were a lot of great pics. I don't know what's happening. The same thing happened with my Sees's Post only 2 of the 5 pictures stuck. Just imagine lots more pictures. Such as the one of this year's superbowl napkins. They are selling them on an end cap at Safeway. The bad about the trip is the digital coupons that you clip on your phone didn't right up right at the register and we had to go to customer service for a price adjustment. For some reason my husband can clip all the coupons on his phone , but his phone number isn't linking to his account. He needs to scan the QR code from his card on this phone by the sales associate when he checks out. What a pain. When he has a chance he'll give them a ring and see if they can fix it. The customer service guy couldn't help us. He's the one that said give the checker the QR code to scan. This is making shopping at Safeway difficult and not efficient. We did get a lot of good deals or we think we got a lot of good deals. Pete's coffee was $7.99 a bag. Eggs were $1.99 a dozen. Chicken broth was on sale for 50% off in the clearance section and we grabbed 4. Then we went to the regularly section and it was on sale for only 99 cents so we put the clearance ones back on the rack and took the 99 cent ones. The bathrooms are locked up, you need a code to get in. I was lucky that the person in-front of me had the code. The bathrooms aren't spectacular. They are decent. They didn't smell bad and appeared clean. Clearance Rack- There are 2 racks out side the restrooms of clearance items. There appeared to be lots of good deals. As you heard above we though we were getting a good deal, but we weren't so know your prices before you fall for the 50% off sticker deal. read more

This market is pretty nice inside. The fried chicken at the hot deli counter... when fresh is very good. Homelessness everywhere but they do have a few security guards keeping an eye on things. The parking lot is small and tight so be patient. The baked goods / pastries are also pretty good at this location. Employees were all nice. Ambiance is clean and bright throughout. read more

This Safeway is a mess. People with bikes in the store. Dogs that are not "registered for aide". You ask for help no one helps. It's awful. Worst Safeway I have ever been in. Yes you have homeless people outside and inside that's part of it, It's the staff and the fact the shelves are not stalked and half of the product is locked up. Hard pass here. read more

Safeway - Dec.2025, cute tote bag with poppy screenprint - Grocery Near Me - Sacramento, California

I love Safeway for my groceries but I also love them for their seasonal gifts and floral arrangements. Can't beat the deli sandwiches and the convenience of having a Starbucks inside as well. Today I came in to pick up some produce, avocados are on sale for $1 each! What a steal. As I walk in the main entrance, the large section of Valentine's Day gifts caught my eye. Two aisles filled with heart shaped candies, large over sized teddy bears and plenty of greeting cards and other goodies. The good news is everything in the seasonal section is 25% off so stop on by to pick up some Valentine's Day goodies for your loved one. read more

This is the official downtown Safeway. It's the one I used to come to a lot because it's closest to my work. However, over the years it's gotten not very safe to shop here due to the safety issues in downtown. Still, Safeway has tried to take some steps to ameliorate their store's safety because only then can they get (probably can't ensure) customers to keep shopping there. The loss prevention measures they've taken includes putting in one-way-in and one-way-out gates to prevent thieves from stealing and running out of their stores without paying for the stuff they took. So every person has to go through this metal gate inside the store after they enter the store in order to get into the store to shop, then they have to go through the regular lines or through the self checkout section to pay before they can exit, even if you end up going into the store and then not buy anything, you still have to exit thru the self checkout or go past one of the regular checkout lines. So the ambiance has become quite tense in many ways, but that's just how it has to be at this location, sadly. Still, Safeway has a good lineup of their products which are well stocked, of both national brands and their store brands, in particular Open Nature and O Organics are my favorite for convenient meal prep and cooking adventures. Safeway always stocks shelves to be plentiful and their deli food items are especially good and their produce is usually very fresh. Overall, this is still a good Safeway and we will still shop here, but personally, I'll only come with someone if possible and definitely only during the daytime if I have to shop here alone. read more

The staff is really nice here, so if I could leave a separate review for them, I'd give them all the stars. But there are some serious issues here that disrupt the customer experience, and whether they are managerial or corporate decisions, they desperately need to be fixed. First, if you're going to lock up half the store, someone needs to be accessible to unlock the merchandise in a timely manner. Several customers and I waited nearly 10 minutes to grab items out of the medicine cabinets. There's a button to alert staff on the locked cabinets that apparently goes to nowhere and there are so few employees walking around the store that there really aren't any to flag down. The locked items themselves aren't expensive, but Safeway feels the need to lock up essentials like cold medicine and pain relievers that are under $10 while their security guards walk around the store in circles. If theft is such a big issue that these items have to be locked up, might I suggest staffing the store so these items can be unlocked in timely manner, or perhaps being a little more strategic in the placement of your security guards to avoid the need for locked products altogether? And, speaking of staffing, maybe you could staff a few more people so you have more than two check stands open on a Saturday afternoon. I was turned away from a pretty empty self checkout because I had around 20 items (5 over the "about 15" limit) so my alternative was to wait in one of the two lines that were open. Of course, the other 20 people that wanted to check out were also in those lines. Maybe another open check stand or being a little bit more relaxed with self check out could've remedied that situation. There were no baggers at the check stands, either. I don't mind bagging my items and am happy to do it when a grocery store is especially busy, but I could've also just bagged them myself at self checkout and saved everyone, including myself, some time. I realistically should've been in and out of this grocery store in about 10 minutes on my trip, but that became over half an hour with all of the unnecessary hurdles that this specific Safeway expects the customer to jump over so they can save a few dimes. I'm not coming back here for a while. The blatant disregard for customers is embarrassing, and there are plenty of alternative stores that will do at least the bare minimum to make sure their customers can actually buy the items they came to get. read more

House brands such as Signature, "O", Value Corner, and Lucerne should be avoided. Too many chemicals, sugars, fructose, and in the case of breads; air. Meats may look good on display but once home too often the underside is brown or grey. Often the stock is not properly maintained on the shelves. At times, the floors are dirty and spills and breakage are left too long. Freezers, and refrigerators do not always maintain proper temperatures. Stopped by Safeway in Sacramento for groceries and the visit was quick and easy. The store was well stocked.

They have food. The ambience is giving grocery/ Hey, straight up - I hate it. Dang it- this place is horrible to come to, because of the damn riff raff ... the staff has forever been top notch. I been trying to avoid shopping here for 20 years... I've always been able to find help if I needed- last time I was here... Someone took one look at me a new what a haux needed. It was a young person too... and they were so damn swift - kind, they made me laugh... It's always been that way- the riff raff will catapult me anywhere but here/ necessity will has forced me inside. I really did leave - layered up- double mask on just lucid barely enough to drive safely- with a chuckle in my heart because a staff person gave me top notch service. I don't think I've ever left a review. Thank you. read more

This review is solely again for the deli department, the last review I left was also on the deli department. Today we came in to get some Genoa Salami, we are standing here before the people in the hot food. But the lady ended up helping everybody else except us. We told her that we wanted a QUARTER pound of the salami, she gave us a nasty look, and then told us to check in the fridge. by the time she actually helped us there was nobody behind us so she shouldn't be in a rush. There wasn't any in the fridge, and we wanted it thinly sliced, which is not what's in the fridge. Honestly I don't like coming here for deli meats but this is the only one close to us. read more

Second time in a month having to use their online ordering system and not only did they fail to provide purchased items that their system said were available but this time they put fresh chicken in the same bag as the loose vegetables which then had to be disposed of due to blood and other juices soaking them! Calling Customer Service was a abysmal experience and the refunded amount did NOT come close to the actual cost of the vegetables for starters and they were barely understandable over the phone due to the background noise level where the agent was working from. If it was possible I would grant Safeway a negative 50 stars after this set of experiences. Sadly they are the only big supermarket near to where I live. read more

Safeway has always been a challenge due to extra stacks they put in aisles and ends Can't fit around bulk This Safeway really went to crap when they took away spaces up front for 'drive up' customers The 4 spots are usually empty Next, other business employees park in Safeway parking despite the signs and 3 security/parking enforcement that do nothing. I definitely have been leaning more towards going to another location as of late. I've been going to this one for decades, but the last couple of years I've noticed a lot more attitude and lack of helpfulness from employees. In a recent trip there, I noticed they changed the coupon system. I used to be able to go into the self checkout lane, which is much better for my anxiety, and use coupons I've received from Chobani. I've done it for about a year now and have never had a problem. In and out in less than 5 minutes usually. So, I went in like any other time except when I used the coupon the system was acting up and the person working lectured me on using coupons in self checkout instead of the regular checkout lane. And when it acted up a second time, I had to wait 10 minutes for a manager to come by to essentially prove I put my coupons in the slot, by opening the coupon box and pulling them out. Mind you these are 75 cent off coupons and the person working that area said he already helped me out once and that people get fired over coupons and he wouldn't even look in the bin where I could clearly see I put the coupon coupons in. Also, I'm not going to try to rip off Safeway by using a 75 cent coupon. So, I won't be going there for a while. read more

This place just keeps getting worse and worse: - They put gates all over the entrances so it feels like you aren't wanted there in the first place - they never have anymore than 2 registers open at any given time - there are entire sections of the store locked up so you have to call a service member to come unlock a gate to retrieve $4 mouthwash for you - now they have eliminated plastic bags and have replaced them with the absolute worst paper bags I have ever used. Surprise, surprise! That's what one of Safeway's best cashiers had in store recently for his customers. His name is Gavin, who for the past six years has gone the extra mile to help shoppers at Safeway on 19th Street, Sacramento. He is so impressive, he deserved a shout-out. Eleven days ago, on Halloween 2025, Gavin became "Pennywise," the monster clown from the movie "It." Unlike in the film, no one mysteriously disappeared during Gavin's portrayal -- in fact, people appeared IN FRONT OF HIM to admire his garish costume. For the record, Gavin scared me. He put the fear in me! In all, Gavin has been with the Safeway supermarket chain for 18 years, the first 12 at the Granite Bay location. If a shopper has trouble finding a particular item, Gavin is the man to see for directions to the proper aisle. If a shopper has difficulty redeeming coupons on Safeway's mobile app, Gavin resolves the issue. "That's what I'm here for, to help you," Gavin likes to say. He helps in so many ways! When not behind a regular cash register, Gavin works in what appears to be a corral -- an enclosed section with several self-service machines for customers. In the corral, he's constantly on the move, ensuring the machines function properly. Behind a regular register, space is limited, so he doesn't move as much, except for his fast-moving hands. Gavin, 46, is extremely shy. On Halloween, I begged him to pose for photos by the majestic silver steed statue in front of Safeway's main entrance. He reluctantly posed, during his break. My closing words: Gavin, you are truly special! You are My Main Man at Safeway.......Safeway would not be the same without you! Thanks for assisting me every time I shop. See you soon! read more

The only reason I even went back to this god awful "grocery store" after we found MOLD in the pasta was because my partner ran out of soda. Come to find out that the soda that was bought was TWO ENTIRE MONTHS EXPIRED!! I think they genuinely do not care about how far past the expiration date as long as the shelf's look stocked. After traveling out of the country try for a month I was craving a simple deli sandwich and thought of Safeway as I was in the neighborhood. The young gentlemen made my sandwich well and to my specifications even scooping the inside of the roll out for me so it's easier to eat. The ingredients were fresh and tasty. This Safeway is the main one in downtown Sacramento. Safety has become quite an issue in this area, unfortunately, and I've seen quite a bit of loitering here, so we only stop here in daytime and would never come after dark. Usually we'd keep the kids in the car and just have one of us go buy whatever we need quickly and get back. The parking lot can be quite chaotic b/c there's a lot of businesses in this plaza and there's not enough sport. The store itself is pretty clean and well organized, it's just that the surroundings in this part of downtown isn't safe anymore. The store has implemented several security measures, including always having an armed guard, and one-way gates type of entrances that you have to go through after you entered the front doors of the store, this must be to deter shoplifting which I can imagine has been a big problem at this location. The produce, fresh and frozen foods we get here have all been good, as well as their baked goods. Overall, it's a good store, just not in a good location. read more

This is one of two Safeway locations in "the grid" of Sacramento. This particular location in the heart of Midtown Sacramento is situated on the corner of 19th and S St's and has been one of the busiest supermarkets in the entire area. Basically this particular location is best traveled by foot, bike, scooter, or light rail simply because the parking lot is one of the most cramped you'll find anywhere (next to Trader Joe's in East Sacramento). I do remember when this store made its grand opening dating back to 2004/05 when I lived relatively close to this area. One thing that sets it apart from the rest is their mascot, "Spirit", a 11-foot tall, 2,500 lb. chrome stallion horse that stands proud directly at the main entrance. Other than that, you can find all types of people that frequent this location. Everything from hipsters, homeless, state workers, yuppies, and poor folks, yes this Safeway has it all. Since I don't live close to this area, I usually only find myself when I am in the area and need a caffeine pick-me-up (with a Starbucks inside) or a tasty sandwich at their deli. Overall, this is a relatively clean store despite the heavy amount of foot traffic that comes in. They have a produce section that is well stocked but some items look as if they're a hit or miss. So make sure you read the expiration dates; especially on perishable items like milk, meat, fish, and poultry. I do like how all Safeway stores utilize their "Just For U" coupons that can be generated through their app which can give you some very impressive savings; especially since inflation is driving up the cost of food like crazy. All in all, this is just an okay Safeway store. On many of my times shopping here, customer service can be hit or miss and sometimes there is only one employee working at Starbucks as well as limited staff at the deli. If you're here for just a few items, then I recommend it. But for me, it is just average at-best. My rating, three stars. read more

Lots of security guards who can't do much of anything legally unfortunately. Daytime is quite safe on the other hand. Usually. Service is good. Man this Safeway is absolutely depressing. A lot of it is not the fault of the staff, they're doing the best they can. Homelessness is rampant all throughout the country and many seem to congregate at this Safeway for whatever reason. Again, not Safeway's fault and not staff's fault at all. It's just unfortunate. The inside of this grocery store is very 'dated.' I wish Safeway/Vons/corporate would invest more money into it. It's in one of the best locations in the Sacramento region, being on R Street and in 'Ice Blocks.' They need to stop being cheap and make this store more aesthetically pleasing. The groceries are very overpriced here, for whatever reason. I'm not expecting grocery prices to be as low as Grocery Outlet or anything, but as of late it seems like their prices are similar to somewhere like the Co Op. So if that's the case, I might as well go to the Co Op where the quality of groceries is better, as is the overall experience. Even though I live walking distance from here, I hardly ever go. It's just too depressing and too much chaos, unfortunately. read more
