I've never really been a fan of this Safeway, but it's close to my house so I just deal with it. The last few weeks, however, pushed me over the edge with this store.
Let's start with the butcher. First, I went looking for some ground beef. The butcher counter was open, but he didn't want to help me. He told me to go to the pre-packaged meat for what I was looking for. WTF? I wasn't looking for the quantities in those packages. I'm feeding two people, not a family of four or more. So I told him that wasn't what I wanted, and he reluctantly helped me. Ok, great.
The following week at the butcher -- similar deal. The beef I wanted had already been pre-packaged for the day at about 1pm. A little early to be closing up shop. And again, the packages were far too big. So I brought a package up to the counter, and asked for it to be split up. The same guy who didn't want to help me last week was confused by this concept, even though he did it ONE WEEK BEFORE for me. So he handed it off to another butcher, who was disinterested. She gave the package a look, picked up a giant knife, brought it up high, and whacked the package. I felt like I was in a murder movie or something. It was such a shocking behavior, and a little violent to boot. Needless to say, I quietly took my meat and walked away uncomfortably.
I also bought some romaine lettuce on that visit for dinner the next day. While washing off the lettuce that day to prepare dinner, as I was pulling the leaves of lettuce apart, dead flies kept falling out of it. DEAD. FLIES. Disgusting! I stopped a few leaves in at four dead flies. I was afraid to get to the center; who knows what I would have found.
That's it for me. Being mistreated by employees and then bringing home bugs is the end of the line. read more
