Most unfriendly Safeway I've ever been to (and I have been to lots throughout the US, from South Carolina to Hawaii). Every time I've been there it is a hostile vibe in general, rude employees and I had a lady pick a fight with me in self checkout after trying to sneak in line in front of me, then demanding I let her go ahead of me in line. First and foremost; Prices are better than Ukiah! An older Safeway in a old strip mall with some other good places to grab a sandwich a burger and whatnot... It's clean and well stocked. They had everything on our list! Helpful staff. Self checkouts are helpful. A bank inside for your convenience. Like most Safeway's the flower/plants dept is gorgeous and smells lovely even though your mask. If I'm in the area I would definitely stop here again & again... read more

Imagine it's midnight, you're working hard on your philosophy paper and realize you haven't eaten since you started at 6 - you run to Safeway where theres a million aisles and you're new in town so you don't know where everything is. This is where Rylo came in clutch for me last night. Had a list of stuff to make for a salad and had all but 2 ingredients. I didn't wanna bother him because he seemed busy but when I asked for help he wasn't afraid to come to the rescue. He directed me to my missing salad ingredients and shared a nice story about how helping another customer allowed him to know where my ingredient was. SUPERB! It was late so i know he was a one man army, but he even made sure to make things look nice after i grabbed my stuff - talk about above and beyond. I hope Rylo's manager lets him know what a difference he makes in the store - what an awesome guy and an awesome experience at my new local Safeway. This is probably one of the worst Safeway's I have ever been in. The bakery department has barely anything in it. The lines are always too long and the biggest issue is that the customer service is terrible. I've only encountered a couple of very nice people working there. Most of the workers barely acknowledge you when checking out and my groceries never get bagged right. They always put way too much stuff in the bags and are way too heavy. The Safeway in Eureka is so much better, but since I live near this one it's where I end up shopping. I usually try to get in and out as quickly as possible. read more

Honestly not bad as far as stores go. It's always clean, has good amount of product (except greens it's rare that I get the $5 salad mixes consistently), friendly staff. I have noticed (since covid) they've done the most for their staff the most quickly (compared to stores in the area) so that is pretty awesome as well. read more

I live fairly close to this location, so I shop here often. While the price points are a little higher than I prefer (Winco prices are better) I am happy to pay a little more for the convenience of being close to home and having my items bagged for me. There are lots of employees who have worked at the Fortuna location for years, and I love seeing familiar faces almost every time I go in. Staff is so kind there! The current manager, Ariel, is the sweetest. She always says hi when I see her in the store, always asks if I found everything I needed, and if I haven't, she offers to check the back for me or show me where it is. She genuinely cares about doing her job well, and it shows. This location continues to increase the amount of organic and health food items they carry, and I love that! Their produce section has a convenience shelf where I can buy things like pre-sliced vegetables and pico de Gallo, which I appreciate. They also have a heavily discounted shelf at the back of the store by the customer restroom where you can buy heavily discounted items that are either out of season, have some small imperfection, or had the outer packaging opened. I'm so happy to have a Safeway here in town, and always appreciate the service I'm provided. read more

On our recent stay camping in the greater Van Duzen River area, we ventured into town a few times, and found the Fortuna Safeway to be well stocked and well staffed. Not sure what magic sky island other reviewers have been visiting to do their shopping for butt cream and bagels, but we did just fine here on camping essentials... And even a quart of ice cream that was decidedly not freezer burned. The organic strawberries were from Watsonville (same supplier we get in Los Angeles, kids) and tasted sweet and juicy. Marshmallows were soft and not melted together. Meats and dairy were fresh and not small-town marked up. At the register, I stepped past another patron to grab a bag of ice. She damn near had a nervous breakdown, screaming, covering her ears, and repeating "ooh! Ooh! Strange man!" I can't hold that again the store. Crazies are everywhere, and I suppose I'll take the Pepsi challenge per capita with Fortuna and my home town, any day of the week and twice on Sunday. The line I was in did take a long time on three occasions-- but that wasn't the store's fault either. And it wasn't the fault of the parade of customers in front of me separating their alcohol, tobacco, and dairy purchases from their WIC and EBT-approved shopping lists. It is...what it is, and I got nothing but time. I'm on vacation here, you see. Which is interesting considering how NorCal folks responded to my usual brand of "kill em with kindness." It's cool, though. When I go back to work in a few weeks, I get paid either way. read more

By far the worst Safeway store I ever set foot in. When the store is busy there are always a limited amount of checkers available and the lines can be over 15 minutes long. Also most of the checkers I've encountered there are overall rude. Also the freezers are always on the blink. So bad I will not buy anything that's frozen. A lot of stuff I purchased there appeared to have thawed at some point and refroze. In addition to that the Deli Dept. is filthy. Next time you make a visit check the scales,hot food case and floor and you'll see what I mean. read more

This is probably the worst Safeway I've ever visited. Usually Safways are clean, well stocked, and provide good service. The Fortuna Safeway has absolutely terrible service. Lines tend to be very long at most times during the day, courtesy clerks are almost nonexistent, and their staff tend to be under trained especially in the deli and bakery departments. The only time I've seen this store look decent and staffed was a few hours before the regional manager was scheduled to visit the store (Employees were complaining about it). read more

This is my neighborhood Safeway, and yeah, it's a little overpriced, and a little funky, but it's the best and most affordable game in town, and its funkiness is genteel funkiness, more of a vintage shopping experience than a funky one, really. I don't know what's going on lately but the Fortuna Safeway has gone downhill severely in the last few months. Every single time I come in there's carts all over the parking lot yet none in the terminal by the entrance where they are supposed to be so I end up having to walk back out to the parking lot just to get a cart. Then when I come back inside there are no sanitary towels to wipe the often filthy cart off which is just plain gross in my opinion. The doors on the donut display are grimey & disgusting with no donut selection at 11am. The store shelves look like they haven't been restocked for some time & when it's time to check out I end up spending more time in line than I did shopping. I feel bad for the checkers bc the last time I was in there was a line of shopping carts backed clear up to the bakery & you couldn't even get thru the main isle. I've never seen so many pissed off old ladies in my life. I don't know who the current manager is but he needs to pull his head out of his ass & get the place straightened out. There should be more than 2-3 check out lanes open in the mid afternoon. It's just plain ridiculous & it's gotten to the point where I almost feel like I'm shopping at Winco (not a good thing). Also, I went thru the 15 item express lane today & was shocked when the grumpy older guy with white hair admonished me for using the express lane bc I had 17 items. Really?! Do you know how many times I've gone in for a quick few items only to be stuck waiting in the regular check out lane bc the express lane was closed?! It really pissed me off bc I try to be considerate of others & had exactly 15 items on my list (bought duplicates of cream cheese & spaghetti). The last 2 times I used the express checkout I stood there & watched as the person in front of me unloaded 20+ items & no one said anything about it. I don't think a few items over is really anything to make such a fuss about. Give me a break! There wasn't even anyone in line behind me. I don't really appreciate being treated like a little kid when I spend at least $400+ there a week. Customer service is severely lacking. They also need to do something about the panhandlers outside the store bc I get real annoyed when random people bug me for money. Something needs to change but it doesn't matter bc I'm going to start doing all my major shopping at Rays. Today was the last straw & I've had enough! read more

I am very disappointed with the graveyard shift. I went there @ 3am with a migraine & nauseous,, I was after a ginger ale. I squeezed the stupid frog noise maker 3 times within about 5 minutes... nobody came! First off the other day I was at the Fortuna Safeway and had my leashed service dog with me also has his ID handy but apparently if he does not have is vest on that means it's ok to disrespect me and when offered to show his ID I got a eye roll and a no and walked away as I was already checked out leaving. Second I was there tonight (not with my service seeing that it's an issue) but there were no hand baskets near the door so I had grabbed a empty one that was behind a check stand and when I was checking out with people be hind me and all the skinny young man with glasses gave me a weird look and said with a bad attitude "where did you get that?!" I was like what looked around and held up the basket and he said yeah that! I started to say at a check stand and then he cut Me off and said at a check stand?! I was shocked so I said yeah and chuckled a bit. cause like really what's the problem and he just gave me a eye roll. If you like paying almost $10 per lb for lunch meat that's full of gluten fillers, or deli salads that come right out of a can or box then you'll love this place. They also took out the bulk coffee and along with it my only reason to ever go here. Drive into Eureka to "Winco" at 636 W. Harris, Eureka, Ca, you'll pay about half what Safeway charges for meats. new to fortuna, been to safeway a couple times, was always great, staff helpfull and friendly, however when we did big shopping on saturday i really did not appreciate the check out guy with an attitude. i realize saturday is the busy day but still a customer should not be punished for having a full cart and having my groceries slung at me by an uptight clerk was a real turn off, dont know what was up with this guy. read more

i go to Safeway basically everyday. its your average grocery store. the bakery and deli are alright, but the sushi is where it's at. they have their own personal sushi chef in the deli section. he makes it fresh everyday. hands down best sushi in town. definitely wasn't what i was expecting the first time i saw that packaged little box of sushi sitting in the cooler of the deli section. i have yet to dislike any of the rolls i have tried, and the sushi chef is beyond friendly, always willing to whip a special order together for ya, and to top it all off he is pretty funny. too bad he doesn't except tips read more

This is the worst Safeway I've ever been in. The lines most days are backed up and they don't call for help. They don't bag your groceries, and the bathrooms are filthy and never have toilet paper or hand towels. Yesterday I scanned my phone app over a "just for you" item to get the discount and when I got home I noticed they charged me full price. The meat department has the worst selection of fresh seafood (and the ocean is right here!) Including today I recently went vegan and went in for one of those just desserts vegan cupcakes and they were out An employee in the bakery section approached me! Asking ME if i couldn't find something and I told her the dilemma anyway cutting to the chase since they weren't carrying what I wanted or any of the daily specials I was discounted big time for a just desserts vegan cake. And this isn't the first time for this Safeway I was discounted in deli for a confliction once and was even given a free lime aha after I realized I almost walked out with it in my pocket(I wasn't carrying a basket and needed my hands). hopefully no one gets fired for this because they were truly isolated incidents Anyway the generosity and helpfulness of employees here is exceptional and I don't understand the low score rating. I am sorry to hear of the bad experiences at my local safeway. I shop there at the very least every other day. Bagels are one of the main things I buy. They run out every day and the bagels are made fresh daily. I do not buy the doughnuts, but they are made daily as well. My daughter just started in the bakery a few weeks ago. If there are ever leftovers they are thrown away. There are a few cashiers that could learn to have better customer service skills. I know which to avoid where someone not local would not know. I have had an issue once with a food item, i took it back and received a refund with no issue. The produce is always fresh, the store is clean. I am very happy with my local safeway. read more

Well, I am shocked at the previous reviews. We were passing through Fortuna in our motor home a few days ago and stopped for "supplies". I was telling my DH that I had never before in my many years of grocery shopping - often at Safeway stores- run into so many polite and friendly employees. From bakery to deli to checkout - everyone had a pleasant word. Produce was fresh and delicious. I thought it was particularly kind when an employee approached a very elderly shopper to remind her that she had forgotten to pick up a second item that was BOGO. Even the store manager wished me a good day on the way out. In fact, i was so impressed i went back to the same store today after leaving our Rv site and travelling north. PS - I found the bakery products good, too - French bread was great! Too bad there are so many 'homeless' in the area of the parking lot - very sad but maybe a sign of the times. read more
