We were traveling for a graduation and we found this breakfast spot kind of on accident. The food was so great that we came back the next day. I enjoyed the country scramble so much. I was visiting family up in Eureka, and I found this place on the web. I liked the name and the menu, so I came down to Fortuna for breakfast. It's a smaller place, with just a nice little coffee shop vibe. My server was Abigail. She was very friendly. I asked her if the name of the restaurant was a play on the TV show "Hells kitchen," and she confirmed that yes, it was. I thought it was clever. I decided to have the "vegetable mess. " Potatoes, onions, bell peppers, garlic, mild green chiles and eggs, "all messed up". It came Topped with jack cheese, salsa and sour cream. I had them leave off the bell peppers, and I paid a little bit more for them to add mushrooms and spinach. The "mess" came, and it was huge!! It was also delicious! The eggs were fluffy, you could definitely taste the garlic, and all of the veggies played very well with each other. The cheese was delicious, and it was just the right amount The chilies had a good flavor, and yes, they were mild The potatoes were good, and just the right texture as well. I liked the sour cream, and the salsa was not spicy at all. It had a bit of a smoky flavor. The thing was so huge, I had some to take home. So we have slowly been making our way down the coast and food has been meh. Nothing to rave about and not much to complain about. Stopped here on our way from Trinidad to mendico. I cannot say enough good things about this place!! The food is amazing. The biscuits were sooooo good we got 6 to take home. Jeanette, our server was friendly, quick, and let my sassy pooch sit outdoors with us. The strawberry stuffed pancake was so decadent. My husband got the chili burger and I've rarely seen him Not finish a plate. He loved it, but it was a lot of food. 10/10 I would recommend this spot. We will be back!! read more

We tried multiple breakfast spots in the area during our stay, and this is THE ONE. The staff was kind and accommodating, the food was INCREDIBLE, and the back patio is great if you're dining with dogs. It was an overall mellow vibe here. The strawberry pancake is an absolute must, as was the Andy's. It was the best biscuit and gravy in the area for sure. This place is amazing. Second visit here. The food is obviously fresh and made with lots of love. My orange creamsicle vodka drink was made with organic vodka and fresh vanilla. My hubby is more of a potatoes & meat guy so was looking for more traditional bfast, nothing fancy, more hearty food. Came out to eat bfast at noon & was met with a car show outside restaurant so their menu was more limited. I had the French toast special which was perfect for me. It tasted fresh & delicious. Hubby had country breakfast plate & he ate the entire thing. He enjoyed it, but was busy on work calls. He said food was ok & that sausage tasted funny. He was also on a work call that was stressful so I don't think he is being fair with his tevIf you are hungry & want good food check this place out. I am assuming of you are reading restaurant reviews because you care about quality. This place came highly recommended by a lady who works at the hospital: The breakfast : home fried potatoes , eggs, hamburger patty , toast and coffee. Mediocre. It tastes like they buy the very cheapest eggs, meat and potatoes. The coffee was the weakest I've ever had in a restaurant. But I saw a big table of guys who are regulars were all eating real big good looking plates of sweet stuff, french toast, pancakes etc. The ambiance was dated: a basic little spot, kind of cute. Enjoyed that. And no complaints about the service, it was very good ! Felt comfortable there. But I am a bit on the picky side. Yet I am also no food snob. I would probably not eat here again. No judgement on L's Kitchen, they have been around a long time and Fortuna people like it just fine, and they are known for their biscuits and gravy and freshly baked cinnamon rolls. read more

A great place to get high quality meals "like mama makes em". The servers are always so friendly and willing to answer any questions you have. There are several food restrictions in my family and they are always mindful. The lighting and comfort level are perfect during a rainy day; did I mention their coffee? Let's say my son ate it in less than 2 minutes. Lots of chocolate chips. Denver omelette was fluffy and filled with lots of ham, bell peppers, onion and cheese. Hash browns were cooked just how I like it. Nice and golden brown with a crisp. So good, it was hard to stop eating it even after I was full. Country mess was a mess of goodness. We recently moved to Fortuna, and have heard nothing but great things about L's. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. I asked if I could try the "famous" gravy. She brought me a small bowl, and it was fantastic! I ordered the country mess and my husband ordered the meat lover's omelette. The country mess was outstanding. I could taste the fresh garlic. Very nice lunch. Smart, efficient service, nice atmosphere, lots to see in signage, wall stuff, good food. Cash only. I strongly recommend L's Special Grill for lunch. This is a grilled turkey sandwich topped with mild, green flavorful chilies and pepper jack cheese, all on grilled sourdough bread.
