Here's an interesting update....It was slightly after 9 AM and there were two pans of chow mein sitting in the windows. I waited about 10 minutes to get Help and finally asked one of the deli clerks to get me some chow mein and they told me that for Chinese food they were closed until 10 AM. This means they're gonna have food sitting in the case for a whole hour rather than serve customers fresh hot food in the deli. I bought the tiramisu, I love tiramisu but this one failed. badly don't get me wrong but this is based off all the tiramisu I have tried from multiple stores. Tiramisu is supposed to be all soaked in coffee or condensed milk to make it soft and moist, Safeway only did it for the chocolate layer therefore it just tastes like cake decorated as tiramisu. I got it cause I thought it would be good due to it being the last one and I can see why now The whole thing is too thick and ended up giving me a feeling my heart was racing and normally it doesnt do that which is so odd to me I'll stick to getting my tiramisu elsewhere now on read more

Large store that carries more items than smaller stores and offers side facilities, like pharmacy and liquor departments. The checkers are always helpful when they're on the aisles help me find items that I don't normally find easily. Managements always available when you ask for one. And they're open to listen to comments. For me the key thing about shopping here is they offer MOBILITY carts for seniors and handicapped. And this allows me to shop longer and for more items. This store is horribly mismanaged, and it has been for years. Most notably at the moment, it has had no bags for about a week and nothing is being done about it. If you want to buy more than an armful of groceries, you're out of luck unless you brought your own bag. That isn't how a real business is run. A good manager would have found a solution within a day. They could buy bags from somewhere else, borrow some bags from another Safeway, use garbage bags, etc. There are many options, but they don't care enough to try. That just scratches the surface of how poorly this place is run, but I think it speaks volumes. read more

This supermarket is disgusting and gross. Its organized badly, with a wildly inconvenient rule thaybyou must display a receipt to get out of the store once you've entered. I ha ve no idea why they have a SWAT team at the front door, because that team pays no attention to actual safety nor even look at people as the way in. Their backs are facong the door and attention is solely focused on the phones, or are staring at people doing self checkout then demanding to see the receipt from a transaction they literally just watched. Meanwhile I have never visited this location without being hit up by someone sketchy, usually insistently asking for money, for an Uber ride because they're 'stranded', to use my phone - um no! Or guys yelling to get attention when im just trying to get to my car. The store layout is insane, and disorganized. Very few checkout clerks. Most of these problems would disappear if they hired and trained adequate number of staff. I dont buy it that everything needs to be locked up because of shop lifters. The shoplifting occurs because the place is so understaffed. Advantages? I couldnt say: Weirdly the prices aren't lower than a more respectable location. The Safeway on San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito became my home Safeway location when I was living in Albany. There was a closer location on Solano Avenue, however I preferred the ambiance/design and offerings at this location more. In part that was because it was larger and in part because of the flavors offered of particular brands/products. Frequenting this location, one drawback I found was that the donuts were not put out until a certain time of day, and a little later than I had anticipated. I still loved the bakery section, both in-house and other bread brands. Workers at check-out were friendly and the parking lot was large. On one occasion, I left my car with a hand engraved metal water bottle in it. After shopping, I went back to my car and found the water bottle gone. I had not really thought of that water bottle as being in the category of "do not leave valuables in vehicle", but I learned my lesson. Produce tended to be fresh and the meats section offerings for the most part were well stocked. The hygiene/bathroom supplies section evolved during my time shopping here, including some of the items such as toothpaste being on the shelves behind glass/plastic and requiring an employee/key to open. The lines tended to be longer a little later (such as 7 p.m. on weekdays) than some of the other nearby Safeway locations. read more

Unless you're recently released from the system and miss the feeling of walking with your celly or bunkie to pick up you zoo zoos and wam wams from commissary stay away. One way in one way out dirty with security swing gates. I only use it for the DMV kiosk that they hide on the other locked entry. They make you scan a receipt to leave. It is unfortunate that I was profiled as I entered the grocery store. As soon as I walked into Safeway to buy paper towels and bathroom tissue, I noticed an ununiformed man staring at me. Being raised in the area, I remember this fancy Safeway opening after closing down Macdonald Ave and Mosier Lane Safeways. It was really a beautiful, trend-setting supermarket. Over the holidays, I visited my parents and shopped with my dad. I've written almost 700 reviews and given 1 star ratings to 5. So it has to be pretty bad to get 1 star from me. Three urgent suggestions for the Store Director: 1. Rework the Wine/Liquor section to have its own service staff and cashier. I've noticed all liquor and every wine over $9.99 are locked up in cabinets. I understand the shoplifting problem in the store, but try ringing the bell and it takes ages for someone to come with a key (if they come at all). I've seen most people like us walk away. How many sales are lost along with dissatisfied customers? A renovation and full staffing with checkout (same as other stores with floral, cheese or wine sections) should earn more sales and profits. 2. Stock-up for the holidays. While I understand the egg problem (even Florida has a shortage but I've never seen empty refrigerated shelves), there isn't a celery shortage. Except for veggie tray packages, there were no celery stalks to be had either plain or organic. Lots of other produce appeared wiped out or not restocked. We had to go to another supermarket just for a staple vegetable item like celery? 3. Restrooms are the worst. Per Yelp reviews, this has been a problem for years and it seems like it never improved. My 90-year old dad had to find someone with the combo, then discovered the restrooms were so trashed with feces on the toilet seats and floor, urine on the floor, and such unsanitary conditions that Contra Costa Health should shut down the store. Why put a lock on it if customers can't even sit down on a toilet seat? (Why people even trash restrooms is beyond my comprehension.) I got behind the selfish, narcissist in my photo who was so busy texting, she never put her stuff on the conveyor belt and than she left to go get something out of her car. She than split her order in two while texting like a madwoman. The line just grew longer because of her sociopathic antics. Just horrific. The poor woman who was there asked if I could come back 3 hours after my requested pick up time to pick up. Sorry, no, the party is over by then, I don't need the cake. I bought 11 gift cards totaling $335 at Christmas time as gifts. Come to find out that 3 of the cards did not have money on them after I got the approval receipt for each card. Now for over a month I am getting the run around from Safeway. The merchant for the gift cards directed me to go back to Safeway since it was purchased there. Safeway was able to find my original receipt in the back office to show it was approved being that I threw the original receipt away from Christmas, but they are still saying go to the merchant for the cards. Tried to get assistance right away as I guessed the driver might still have the bag in his car and wanted to reach him while he was still in the area. No customer service phone listed so tried chat with no success. Found customer service phone online and woman said she would contact driver and call me back. I did not get a return call and tried again. This person said they had no way to reach driver. Asked for supervisor and gave up after 10 minute on hold. Delivery charge has increased and it is no longer a Safeway truck that delivers orders but individuals in private cars. Terrible customer service! read more

What happen to Safeway off Del Norte BART Station? Seems like the store does not take care of the inside. The restroom is now locked due to people vandalizing the inside. The food at Safeway is OK. I have manage to find what is on sale on Friday compare to going to other Safeway location. One Friday I went to Safeway there was no carts available. What happen to the carts? Have people been stealing them and how do they steal the carts if it has a security lock on them? This Safeway location does have lots of cars parking in the lot...hopefully not parking for BART. I had come to this location Thursday night right before closing. I encountered a cashier named Felicia (unsure of the spelling) in which we had a quick funny interaction while she rung my items up. I had gotten a bottle of wine so I had my identification out with my debit card. I paid for my items and went to work. I then returned to this location yesterday and had gotten a bottle of sparkling wine. I was waiting in one line when I heard a cashier say "I'm open on six!" I look up, see it's Felecia and proceed to her line. When she begins ringing up my items she asks "Were you here the other night?" I say yes and she tells me she believes I had left my ID. I began looking in my purse and did not have my drivers license. She asks what my name is and goes to the customer service counter to retrieve my drivers license. She returns and asks my last name to confirm it's me and says "...See! Aren't you glad I pay attention to my customers?! Good thing you came back in." I am so grateful that she does pay attention. Stopped by to get a quick, hot meal from the deli dept yesterday. Ordered the 10-piece chicken nuggets and a mac n cheese. When I got home I put away my groceries, then sat down for my dinner. The nuggets were just that. All bread, very little chicken, and hard as a rock.I ended up eating 2-3 and threw the rest out. EPIC failure. These things could've been used on the golf course. I would like to try to see how far they will fly. Absolutely TERRIBLE. DO NOT order these or you will be as PO'd as me for wasting my money. So I've been a resident here for over a year. Visited this location a few times. Never had any issues and I never interacted with any employee except the cashier's who've always been decent to say the least....until today. I came in to specifically buy bread. Went to the back, looked for someone to help, nobody was working the bread area at 6:30pm. Okk...grabbed a few bags off the shelf and for the first time, saw this tag on a few bags. Looked it up online and research, sure enough, it's something Safeway actually does. I thought I'd ask my cashier any way before she even scanned a single item (I bought about 10 items excluding the bread). She said "yup I did it before". Cool. She forgot how to process so here enters the diaster of a manager....Britney (dark skinned female, braids, with pink streaks). Cashier (who was very pleasant) asked Britney if she remembers how to process the free bread. This clearly implies that it has been done before. Britney looks at my wife&I and said "no we don't give bread away for free." Continue to state that if I have a problem with it, take it up with the store director (please be assured that I will). Rude comments done, walks away by telling the cashier that "they gotta pay for it". Now, the bread was $2.69. we paid for it and left. I will be assured to come back to for the store director and Britney to get an explanation. Including the district manager's contact information for false advertisement and misleading consumers. Psst Britney, my wife and I are lawyers btw. Also maybe try looking at the actual tags on your items before you make statements like "we don't give away bread for free." I would give Safeway one star but there are still some things I like to buy there. They have locked up just about every product related to OTC pharmacy purchases as well as shampoo, conditioner in long cabinets. They used to have a bell in the lockup isle whereby you could summon assistance to unlock the cabinets. Not now, they got rid of those, so you end having to go find someone to unlock them. The guy unlocks the cabinet and instead of handing you the product to put in your cart, he walks off with it to put behind the check stand - he doesn't tell you which and he's rude with it. The bathrooms there are absolutely disgusting. I have seen better bathrooms in beat up old gas stations in backwoods America. Awful store. Avoid it at all costs. read more
