I have recently 'rediscovered' Safeway... They really have managed to level up on their prepared foods sections. I unfortunately have become a lot less mobile - standing for long periods very much harms my leg tissue so i need to limit standing which means that I am not able to cook as much as I would like to. Prepared foods are such a tragedy. Having veggies cut up in advance is such a time saver sometimes! I used to avoid it because the word fresh was a joke but Safeway had such a great selection of very well priced and fresh fruit and vegetables. Also, those horrifically large veggie trays with some ranch - they have small single servings! I go to things like Shakespeare in the Park so grabbing a wrap sandwich and some veggies for snacking is wonderful! Also, cut up bowls of fresh fruit. There are quite a few selections of different small meats, cheeses with crackers and/or nuts. It is so nice to have options for those of us who forgot our lunch too! They are much less than the fast food options and far better for you as well. This location really seems to run a tight ship where everything, even during a pretty busy afternoon was neat and tidy which is appreciated. I even got fast, knowledgeable help from a passing by employee which is always great, especially when there seems to be a BBQ rush of people in the store. read more

Amazing service at checkout. I always dread going to Safeway, but this time I was very much surprised. Cashier "Indi" Helped me with my Safeway app so I could get every discount possible. I've never received such amazing service as that.. most cashiers tell you to take it to the front desk if there's a problem after reviewing the receipt. On Friday February 6th around noon time I was in dire need of a birthday cake for my grandson 7th birthday. I needed a chocolate cake with white frosting. I didn't need any writing on it. Shelly one of the decorators said she had some in the freezer. She got it for me and Abby put some blue ribbon trim on it for me. I can't thank them enough for going the extra mile. I had been to 3 other stores and nobody would help me with my request at the last minute. Shelly and Abby you two are the best. Thank you for your kindness. Big HUG to both of you. Sad practices happening with pokemon cards and I hope these people get reported. Store manager at this Safeway and his employees were blocking the Pokemon machine and repeatedly tapping the machine until product comes up. The employee then bought multiple things and was talking on the phone about how he's selling it and making money from it. Store manager was laughing about it and talked about letting him know when the machine has stuff and will get a cut from it. Literally all in front of me and other customers with no care in the world. Store managers name was Zaid, couldn't read the other two employees tags as they were turned away. Really hopeful companies put a stop to this horrible behavior and it gets more notice. read more

I recently shopped at Safeway on Sunnyside and the experience could have been better. I picked up two half gallon containers of Lucerne milk. On the door Safeway advertised a digital deal for this milk so I went into my Safeway app and clipped the coupon. The coupons did not apply the discount when I checked out. I called the store clerk over and he said that the coupon was only good if I ordered on line and picked it up. What? That wasn't specified on the displayed coupon in the store. I asked him to show me where that was stated so that I wouldn't make this mistake again. He just pointed to my coupon in the Safeway app. Again, it's just a coupon, it did not indicate in-store vs pickup. I asked again. He takes my phone hits the back button and said "See, here (left corner of screen) you are in the 'Pickup' and he clicked on 'In-store'. I went back to my coupons, and it was still there for 'in-store'. No change. He said: "I'll give it to you anyway". His tone was rude, as if he was doing me a big favor. As a senior who has been shopping there for over 30 years I felt disrespected. He treated me as if I just wasn't bright. P.S. You shouldn't disrespect customer who are checking out their own groceries. They may entitle themselves to their own creative discount. read more

I experienced a racist checkout clerk today. I pulled up to his checkout stand #1 and he motioned to me that he was closed so I moved to the Self Checkout. Just as I was finished with my transaction, I noticed that he wasn't closed and he helped this white/caucasian lady with her groceries! I then walked up to him and asked why he told me he was closed but yet he helped this lady? Is it the color of my skin? The butcher wasn't very friendly either. I am 77 years old and was refused a sale of alcohol today because I had forgotten my drivers license. OLCC rules only require a permittee [clerk] to check identification if there is any REASONABLE doubt of someone's age. Safeway may be in violation of Oregon State privacy laws and I was solicited last week about joining a class action suit over this policy. I like Safeway and won't get involved, but wish they would use some common sense with this new policy. It is not only an inconvenience to the customer who has to go home just to bring back a drivers license, but embarrassing as hell. read more

I would give ZERO stars if possible. I routinely order $150-$200 a week in groceries for pickup, 4 out of the last 6 orders I pulled into the pickup spot, hit the check in button and it NEVER works. So I call the store, after a bit of hassle my groceries finally show up at my car. TODAY, I was put on PERMAHOLD by the customer service desk, no one in grocery for pickup ever answered the phone. AGAIN I had to go into the store and ask where my groceries were. Meanwhile I watched another car show up, park in the pickup spots and their groceries be wheeled out and put in the car. They arrived after me and were waited on promptly. Finally, the manger went back and the KID they had doing the pickup orders said oh we have your order right now. What 20 minutes or more after I pulled in and AGAIN I had to WALK INTO THE STORE to find out where my groceries were. I said keep them I don't want them now. I requested a credit from the store manager. Now was it his fault or the KID's fault. Probably not. Does their app need fixing and do they need to hire people who want to work, most likely. read more

This review isn't based on one or two experiences, but many. I can't say that the Safeway near the intersection of Sunnyside and 122nd is a 5 star operation, but it's clearly a 4 star operation and possibly a tad more than that. Their prices at Safeway are not of the discount variety but their Club Card specials are numerous. They have also expanded their store branded items, such as boxed oatmeal, for better savings. The employees range from friendly to downright enthusiastic, to the point of being willing to walk you to an item you are looking for. The cashiers will thank you and address you by name if using the Safeway Club Card. Special kudos to some great employees in the deli, floral, and the bakery. In the deli, they are really down to earth and seem almost happy to see you. In the floral department, they will offer assistance with selecting types of flowers and arrangements which are suitable for a specific occasion. In the bakery, they really want to see that you get what you are looking for in baked items, particularly custom made cakes. I entrusted a custom made cake to the bakery for a special occasion and, boy, did they deliver! The cake was a hit. Be sure to check out the Safeway deli for filling sandwiches. Screw the calorie and carb counts every now and then! They've got some standard lunchtime sandwiches they make and they're even willing to customize them. I don't know if they still have it, but I've had their meat loaf sandwich at other Safeways (a mix of ingredients that they need to pull up for reference, if still available) and it is delicious. The only demerits for this Safeway is that it feels a little crowded, even without a pharmacy. (The reason they don't have a pharmacy is because there's a Rite Aid in the same shopping center). Also, parking is fine when not during peak hours, but when it's the weekend and there are numerous other stores to share the parking lot with, it can fill up faster than Albertson's further down Sunnyside and I've seen tempers flare. However, I've shopped at this Safeway enough to have an imaginary or invisible "fan badge." read more

It is Memorial Day and Safeway is advertising Rib Eye steaks bone in for $ 4.99 lb...great price, however at least 50% fat...apparently they were shipped from Canada and regardless of which Safeway location they are all the same. Because it is from Canada their grade does not meet USDA grade and I believe it after seeing it. I am over 70 years old and of the Boomer generation. I ,like many of us in this generation, are not as proficient as younger generations with all this new technology which leads me to these electronic coupons. What a frustrating impossible situation this puts on us. Safeway's corporate position to make no reasonable accommodation for our inability or our choice not to begin another learning curve is to say the HELL with Seniors. Their attitude is... we don't care, if one does not like our corporate policy shop else where. This age bias carries over to how their Pharmacy treats Seniors. We have a close friend who had been given two months to live. It was a shock to be told there was no further medical interventions to prolong her life. She had always had her prescriptions filled at a different Safeway Pharmacy which was convenient to her location. Experiencing Intolerable pain her doctor ordered a pain narcotic. The pharmacist stated that it would take several days to fill.....Really???? Sorry??? Not we will find a pharmacy that has it. These are not isolated experiences there is a pattern that translates that we are not senior friendly.... read more

The store is horrible! Where should I start? poor selection of meat, fish, seafood, vegetables, nearly all products really. Overpriced in general. Customer service at the meat and deli counters is BAD! The butcher obviously needs a lesson in cutting steaks, looks like he's blind and swings wildly with a butter knife. And good luck getting a friendly hello unless it's at the register. Employees on the floor do their absolute best to ignore everyone as if they cannot be bothered. Easily the worst Safeway I've ever experienced. I find all Safeway stores seem to be organized by lobotomized chimps: counter-intuitive shelving, randomly paired aisles/grouped sections, etc. This particular store will make you think you're in a Safeway in Dante's Inferno. I was there yesterday and the entire store reeked of rotting seafood, as if the cases or freezers broke down over night. The shelves had more empty sections than product on them. In the over-the-counter health products, loads of items' facing were just pads of paper with a picture of the product and a label directing you to tear one off and bring it to a cashier, who would get your item for you. Part Davy Jones' locker, part prison commissary...all trash. Drive the extra 2 miles to the Fred Meyer on 172nd. read more

This is my neighborhood grocery store that I stop by at least 3-4x a week for almost everything. The staff is always friendly and the produce always looks fresh! 90% of all of my safeway experiences in Oregon/Washington have been terrible, but this one was bad enough to trigger a bad write up. Safeway as a cooperation cannot survive if they keep focusing on profit margins the way it is now. Shit breaks (gas pumps, cash registers), and no one wants to take responsibility to fix it. It'll just stay broken for years. Coupons do not apply when at the register and no one wants to override it. Really? Everyone can override, but the managers care more about their pennies than their customer retention. I have heard countless people say they won't return to safeway because of these problems, and I couldn't understand until it happened to me. Their 10% off groceries coupon for getting vaccinated never works, and employees do not honor it, shrugging their shoulders and saying things like "You have to put in your club card numbers." It doesn't come off after my club card number. Are you surprised? Safeway staff is so poorly trained. How about safeway give raises to retain their staff instead of losing good staff and eventually losing all their customers from penny pinching? Safeway is going down and in 10-20 years, staff won't have a job. Who would want to shop at safeway when you constantly have to worry about adding coupons on the app and then going in to check out and making sure it applied? Customers could just go to Costco where the price is already low and check out and not have any stress. Customer service is 100% much better at Costco than at safeway. Safeway employs the dumbest of all the dumb, including in the pharmacy where they are in charge of your health. If safeway employees don't know something, they stand there and argue with you saying they don't know, INSTEAD OF ASKING FOR HELP. IF YOU DONT KNOW, YOU NEED TO ASK FOR HELP. You also need to just give the customer what they want so you can keep your customers and keep your job. So embarrassing to refer people to Safeway after experiencing it myself. read more

I do like their deli selection including the Chinese food selections and the chicken strips. They also make good sandwiches. I told him I'd help him exchange it he purchased by using his club card so although they can verify he did buy it they weren't willing to exchange it without a physical receipt.It's at our local store and I definitely expected more from them. Quick trip to Safeway on Easter Sunday evening turned out to be good (and really was quick!). The store was neat, clean, and well stocked. Despite it being a holiday, there were enough workers (you could actually find someone to help you if you had a question!) and the checkout lines moved quickly (there were only 2 lines open, but, like I said, it's Easter). The manager was actually running one of the checkout lines and he seemed very kind and capable. This is a great Safeway! read more

It many respects its "just another Safeway." The deli ladies make it RULE. I don't even know their names. All of 'em on evening shift work Safeway as a 2nd job, bless their hearts. None of 'em speaks English w/great, or particular facility (then again, maybe that's a ruse, as I'm aware it sometimes is w/folks--see: Sosa, Sammy, during the BALCO scandals). But man oh man do they have a first-hand grasp of customer service. They always greet me w/smiles, and singing falsettos of familiarity. Maybe they are simply having a little fun at my expense, and that's fine if so. But they hold aside items they know I like, in the off chance I stop by before they close for the evening. Fortunately, very few people seem to realize you can purchase your regular groceries at the deli, although anything beyond what you would get in the express lanes might be a bit awkward. Maybe it's just as well more people DIDN't know this "secret", or my trips to Safeway might become insufferably elongated... In sum, thanks to the ladies in the Sunnyside Deli! Yelp needs to work on a half star option. I think I would rate this more of a 2.5 rather than a solid 3. Not my favorite grocery store but it works for last minute heading home "oh crap I forgot to get ____" run in trips. I do not like the lay out of the store something about it just throws me off and I can never remember where a product is located. Which is why I just make my husband run in, haha! The organic section is pitiful so as stated we only stop for really quick "i forgot one ingredient pertinent to dinner" trips vs doing all our regular grocery shopping here. There never seems to be more than 2-3 registers open at a time which makes check out go slowly. I do enjoy the deli build a sandwich counter as it is fresh ingredients vs nasty Subway. They also have a sushi chef there making sushi, which according to my husband is good for store bought sushi. read more

I have a smart phone and have downloaded the Safeway application, however after two unsuccessful attempts with assist from customer service we still could not use my smart phone for the downloaded coupons....what a hassle. Today when I shopped at this Sunnyside Road Clackamas,OR. location: the cashier, customer service, store manager(in a meeting) and finally the assistant manager was the only one who had the authority to charge me the downloaded coupon price...I am a senior with severe pain issues which causes me not to stand for long periods of time....At other locations cashiers can handle this. To me I will shop elsewhere not worth the painful hassle. read more
