Shopping at Safeway - in person or delivery - has become a joke. A laughingstock. It's a series of errors and screw-ups that no one will take responsibility for - not even the management. You try to call corporate and you get some idiot in Manila or Bombay that you can't understand, that doesn't care at all what's happened and has no intention of making it right. A simple, small delivery order will involve around 8 calls to customer service where you get to navigate a massive language/standardS barrier and will accomplish nothing but getting your blood pressure up. Not only is it not worth your time and struggle, the prices ARE OBSCENE. And you know why prices are so high? Because ever since Covid, when all of this delivery got really big, we (you and I) have been paying through the nose to make up the shortfall from all of the groceries they've had to comp b/c they screwed up. I've been coming here for over 10 years and won't be back anymore due to Sabrina. If you go to self check out, she will treat you like a thief. She's done it on multiple occasions too. Accused me of stealing bags before I was even through with my purchase. (mind you I'm EBT paying so bags come off of the total at the end either way) after she accused me of stealing the bags before, even knowing my payment method, she proceeded to hover over me my entire transaction to the point where I had to say something until she'd walk away. Management seriously needs to check this lady. Something is off her head like I said I've been here for 10 years and she is always an issue. On my way out the lady behind me even told me how ridiculous that whole interaction was. This review is long overdue. My mom passed away earlier this year and I went to the Safeway floral department to see if they could make me a floral arrangement that would center around an urn. The floral department manger was so kind and sympathetic to my situation and promised to make me the most beautiful floral arrangement. A couple weeks later I went to pick up the flowers right before my mom's memorial service and I blown away at how incredibly beautiful the flowers really were. This review is for THE DELI DEPT. at Safeway on Greenback at San Juan. We had been getting deli sandwiches from the Dewey Safeway Deli. There' a guy in there on DEWEY that ROCKS with the deli sandwiches.. But I was here one afternoon on impulse, so I went to their deli and wanted to try the same SIMPLE turkey sandwich with everything - a simple order right? Wrong. -- There was really no one available and it was obvious they were restocking and all in the back. One guy came out who was CLEANING and he asked if I needed something, I said I wanted a foot long turkey sandwich but already felt weird cause he was the only one there in front and I saw that he had just been CLEANING and throwing things in the trash. SO he took my order and was not nice about it, seemed like he was irritated that he had to stop cleaning. NO GLOVES, I assumed ok, he must have clean hands if he is going to start making my sandwich, so he grabs the bread and the meat and all the stuff for it, I was already feeling weird and yucky and I am watching him pile things onto the bread, and then he grabs a heap of artichoke hearts with both hands and literally WRINGS THEM OUT - THE OIL, ALL ONTO THE SANDWICH, it was the most disgusting thing I ever saw in a deli before... I didn't know how to get out of this, but I was NOT paying for that mess, so I walked away over the the check out area and asked a worker for a manager, a lady came and I told her what I just saw, and she called over the manager who was very dismissive and asked what I wanted, if I wanted to sandwich or not, or if I wanted someone else to remake it, NO I DO NOT WANT THAT OILY MESS, I repeated to him that the deli guy had no gloves on and was WRINGING out the artichoke heart OIL onto the sandwich, and he just walked away over to the deli to the guy and I guess? told him I didn't want the sandwich anymore... It was so gross and almost seemed like he was doing that just because he was irritated that he had to stop cleaning and make food... And altho the lady worker seemed nice and grossed out too, the manager also seemed dismissive, and I ended up leaving with nothing and went elsewhere for lunch. When I told my SO about it, he was also grossed out, and said that they MUST put gloves on and said it was illegal to make food without gloves but I don't know what the rules are. Tyler deserves recognition! I don't usually write reviews but Tyler was so amazing and I want others to know. Due to a disability, I need to have my groceries delivered. I used to do Walmart but chose to switch after they pulled their DEI policies. So I started using Safeway delivery. As I'm waiting for my groceries, I get a notification that they have been delivered and a photo of someone else's porch. I immediately call the support line and ask that they have the driver come back. Come to learn they have no way of contacting the driver and my only options are a replacement the following day or a refund. I chose the refund and they explained it can take 5-7 days to process. No problem. But the week goes by, no refund. Like I said, I'm on disability, so this grocery purchase was on my EBT card and that money is limited, so this was kind of a big deal. I called again and they apologized. They said they would make the refund a priority and it would be processed in 48 hours. Another week goes by, no refund. I call a third time. This time they tell me that they did an "investigation" and discovered that the driver delivered the groceries to the correct address and they will not be refunding me. I was floored! They treated me like liar and were planning to keep my $90.08! I ended up calling the store directly and speaking to the manager of the delivery dept Terry. Terry listened to my story, empathized and processed the refund. And not only that! Tyler also put a credit of $20 on my Safeway account to apologize for the confusion. SO NICE!! I usually don't fight things. I'm a peace loving introvert, but I'm broke and this was straight up wrong. Tyler was so friendly and helpful. They told me to call them directly if there's ever a future problem with my orders. I almost wrote Safeway off altogether, but thanks to Tyler, I will continue to spend there. read more

I recently had an issue with an online order for pickup. I went back to the store prepared to deal with the situation and was pleasantly surprised when the manager came out to speak to me...she was empathetic and understanding. She listened to my concerns and immediately addressed them with a caring and positive attitude. She also stated that due to the holiday, some of the staff was overwhelmed but there is no excuse for what happened; she stated she would discuss it with the employee and use it as a teaching experience. Excellent information to know about your local Grocers! Like, how often does the raw meat you order for next day pick up sit in a cart unmonitored? (Answer: Daily, from 1-3am, as that's usually the first product department pulled from, with different raw meats like chicken and fish stacked together, while the staff collect upwards of 200 additional items, while the raw foods just...sit.....) How often do they wash the bins they use for online orders? (In almost 2 months, about 5 food delivery totes got washed, as far as anyone could keep track of. Primarily as a result of sodas or milk bursting open on the production line. Nothing besides large liquid volumes or pest invasions by flying ants and mayflies seems to merit attention.) Is there cross contamination? (In an effort to meet ever faster goals for no additional compensation, many of their desperate minimum wage employees have been seen putting raw meats and ubagged produce together, into the same bins at the same time, and not ever sterilizing those bins). Are your groceries damp? (The cold bins are left sitting overnight, full of condensation left over from the ice packs, day, after day, after day, rarely ever sterilized. Supposedly they do a large scale decontamination occasionally, but no employees seemed to know when it was last done. At minimum, it was over 2 months ago, given the duration of time the company was observed.) Do all employees sterilize the cart they set your food products on? Probably not. (Those who did were frequently disgusted by the near perpetual black dust from the foam cold bins breaking down. It covers everything, and SHOULD inherently mandate full daily disinfection. I pray for the employees and customers being exposed, as they did not disclose whether the bin materials dusting everything were carcinogenic.) How often do their employees wash their hands? (While none can attest to the bathroom visits of others, only 4 staff members appeared to ever use the break room sink at any point on shift. Employees have frequently been observed going on their breaks, eating, then going back to work-no washing at all.) Their night stalkers frequently finish their 10 minute smoke break, throw their cigarette butts out, then immediately go back to handling products. A horrifying breach of sanitation protocols that went unaddressed. Do their employees drop ice packs on the production floor (which is NOT ever cleaned with bleach, as supposedly their industrial grade equipment cannot tolerate neither bleach nor standing water). Routinely. Do they stick them back in the bins with your food? Absolutely! What about the ice packs, independent of accidents, being cleaned after general use? Nope! Same story as when they get dropped, but with extra bits of frozen parsley and cilantro instead of "floor spices"! Be cautious friends! Take a sniff and you catch mocha... almost chocolatey/coffee hint. Take another sip some other berries ie. Apricot, Bosenberries/blueberries, blackberries appears in your palette... almost oak-y but delectable. Take another sniff of the aroma... you'll detect vanilla. Just an excellent wine for $16++. I cleared my tastebud first after the beautiful dinner my boyfriend made- shrimp Alfredo and the slice of frozen (yes frozen but it was oh so good), key lime pie. Not a lot people last night, but we walk out fast. No lines just plain browsing over wine, grab one and the other things needed. Expired beef patties aren't exciting. We bought the bag of Safeway beef patties the day before yesterday and decided to grill 'em yesterday. My partner in crime prep my grill and chicken hen he opened the bag, the meat had freezer burn. It was t red nor pinky just dull cold beef patties. We brought it back to Safeway. Asked one of cashier to call the manager over. She came. Didn't greet us, not let us know her name. Didn't ask if we wanted a refund nor apologize. Has customer service gone down the drain especially if you're supervising the store? We just wanted a replacement. I have to ask if we could just walk out with the new bag of patties. She said, "we saw you coming in with a bag of those"... I'm not upset or anything, just a lil' weird out that the manager lacks customer service. Not even a smile. Headed back to my place, we grilled those patties. Normally I like going in to Safeway as it has a lot of Organic selections (mom loves this) and I Love their fresh pack California corn (nothing beats Cali produce!) Today was extremely disappointing though I gotta say. I was looking for a turkey breast and a couple other things w mom and I happened by the deli. We needed some ham and as I'm looking at the offerings I see a advtert for various hams n cheeses for $5.97 per pound - normally $14.97 a pound w my club card - MAN WHAT A DEAL!!! I no longer live here but Used to have a card so I quickly scan the QR code and reactivate my membership. I'm standing there.... And standing there..... there is NOONE behind the deli case. The hot deli and cold cases are a buzz of activity but nothing going on in front of me. I catch a couple eyes but workers quickly look away. . I notice someone in the further back thru an open door n catch her attention. She seems a little perturbed that I'm asking for help but she does get someone to help me. After I finally get my ham mom n I head up to the registers as this was the last item on our list. We stop at a register where the cashier does NOT greet us, the bagger does so THAT was nice! I'm watching the prices ring up to make sure my ham rings up correctly and NOPE it doesn't. The young beggar says the discounts will display at the end, so I wait patiently. NOPE. Not then either. The cashier says the discount won't ring up if it's not attached to the club card entered (very curt) and OK my mom put her phone number in there! So we ask if we can change it to mine since I'm the one who scanned the QR code. He is starting to get irritated I can tell. But he complies. He puts my number in and when it Still doesn't come up I ask if they can just look up the ad and discount it? (I hate making other people wait for me!) the cashier calls a supervisor over and NOONE seems to know anything about the deli price!! What ends up happening is the cashier VOIDS our entire transaction and we have to take everything over to the customer service area so that Another manager can look up the ad and then rescan JUST my ham so I can pay for it at the $5.97 (which turned out to actually be $9.00 as the deli guy gave me closer to 1 1/2 pounds of ham instead of the 1 pound that I asked for ) and THEN said manager (she was really nice btw) had to RESCAN everything AGAIN so my mom could pay for the rest of the groceries!! When I got home and actually Looked at my Safeway app I then Noticed that all I had to do was CLIP the coupon for the deli price to take effect AND I could have saved ANOTHER $5 on my order today if the employees actually knew ANYTHING about their own app!!! Ugh So I BELIEVE this could have been solved more quickly today if A. ANY of the employees up front knew enough about the app to tell us that all my mom had to to was Clip the coupon in HER app in order for that price to take effect on the register right??? Is t that how it should have worked?? Or B the Cashier could have just taken the Ham out of the order instead of voiding it in its ENTIRETY so I could have gone over to the customer service n worked that out separately?? Lovely midsized store. Needed to grab some turmeric root and the store was in abundance (yay!). I walked through the produce section 3-4 times looking for a scale but I caved am had to ask for help. The nice gentleman who had greeted me prior (wish I had gotten his name, he was no nice!), told me where the scale was in detail (and started walking away from his project to walk me there; but I managed to get that part right!). Note: I would have never found the scale lol There was a sweet young lady in the floral section creating beautiful arrangement of red roses, white tulips and can't recall what else but they were absolutely gorgeous. I told her the flowers were pretty and she smiled, thanked me and said hello. I also had a pleasant experience with my cashier (the turmeric wasn't coming up on the computer so she summed Nick, who swiftly came to the rescue). We made small talk, sharing my plans for the turmeric root and we got a good laugh from the two older ladies in line behind me who said, "What is that ?!" "You can tell we don't cook a thing!" Safeway used to be king of customer service. If someone in the store made an error, staff would make it right. Now it seems like that is no longer the case. Case in point: today I went in and saw a sign that ground beef was 5.99/lb. When I checked out it charged me at 7.99/lb. I went to the customer service desk to point out the discrepancy, and after the lady went to look, she came back and said that the price was for the larger packs. I pointed out that the sign did not mention the size of the package, only that ground beef was 5.99. The lady held firm and said that it was only for the larger packs. This is false advertising, and the customer service person's flippant, 'no you're wrong' reaction is terrible service. Yes this one-star review is over $3, but it's also about not owning up to your mistake and failing to honor a posted price. Will not be shopping at this Safeway anymore. read more

Don't get sandwiches here/ deli department they have lowered their standards completely, I was told that they didn't have the meat cut for my sandwich.They are not able to cut more meat for my sandwich which is weird because when I worked in the deli we also cut meat for sandwiches if we didn't have it, so I settled for bacon. They also don't carry cream cheese back there anymore, nor do they have fresh cucumbers. Which extremely disappointed me. Don't shop at this Safeway, the employees are rude, they don't honor their ad. My dad was here yesterday buying groceries and he picked up a turkey for thanksgiving. The ad clearly states it's $7 per turkey, limit 1 per household with a minimum purchase of $25 MEMBER PRICE. They had plenty of turkeys and all sizes! But the employee was so "busy" he didn't even look at the ad and said he doesn't know. Disappointed, my dad left without the turkey. Overall this is my 2nd least favorite Safeway in the Carmichael/North Highlands/Citrus Height are but the very worst is so horrible that this location isn't that bad. My biggest issue is that the produce department has 1single scale for customers to use. Every other store has 4-5. It's weird that all the other stores have so many but not this location. Why? The other issue I have is the bagging. I swear to god its like they hate food. All the people are nice but everytime somebody bag my groceries for me for me they put stuff like chips and a mini watermelon in the same bag. It happened so often that I just go to self checkout even thou I hate it. Another issue is just homeless people coming in and changing in the bathroom. Twice this past month walked in to women get undress just out in the open in the bathroom. I understand homeless people need to use the bathroom to cleanup and stuff where they can but go in the stale at least. What if a mom had a little kid going in there. I've been ordering delivery orders for a few months due to a medical issue. Almost every order has a mistake. One time I did not get about half of what I ordered. All they did was issue a refund and would not just deliver the missing items. Usually, I am missing at least one item I was charged for. A few times, I got stuff I did not order and was not charged for which means someone else was probably missing what I received. Accuracy rate sucks. They do refund missing items, but then I don't have what I needed. They do deliver on time. Pretty disappointed in this service. Five stars for Jesse C.! My mom lost her keys today at Safeway. She was distraught as she retraced her steps and wasn't able to find them. After Jesse noticed my mom looking upset, he offered to help her look for her keys. Unfortunately, they were unable to find her keys no matter where they looked. So I came and picked my mom up and took her home. We decided to come back about an hour later to see if they had been turned in. Jesse was waiting out front looking for us because he had found the keys! He came running up to my car because he recognized my mom and said we found her keys!! I stopped by this Safeway while I was in the area.I normally, shop at a different location,but figured I'll just pick of a few things here. i was looking for an Item I could find and being there were no workers on the floor, I asked the cashier. He was extremely rude and arrogant, I think he thought we was being funny, but speaking to customers in a condescending manner is not professional. i got find what I'm looking for and unfortunately, I had the displeasure of having to go to this same cashiers line since there were no other lanes opened. Something rang up at the wrong price and he rudely spoke to the bagger hell of rude. When the bagger came back with what he thought was the same item in so many words he called the bagger stupid. That this point a asked to speak with a manager since the cashier was being ignorant. He paged the manager and was ringing another customer up he was also rude to her as well. I have never had this many problems over a birthday cake it was a beautiful cake but not anything what I asked for.... The only thing I got on my cake was my face..... they called me the night before I was supposed to pick it up with all these problems I couldn't have the flavor I want so I had to pick a different one... I asked for lilies on my cake they can't do lilies in butter cream on my in fondant so why didn't you make them in fondant? I am a girl of comprise so I got the stupid roses that everyone gets on there cake I asked for pink boarder didn't get that and my name in pink but it was purple!!!!! Twice now I have been to the deli department, one person out front making sandwiches and scooping salads. I go and stand at the counter where they have all the deli meats, that is all I needed was some sliced turkey, I stand there for a few minutes waiting, hoping the lady in the back will come out, I know she saw me (same lady both times) because I could clearly see her through the pass through window she was standing at pretending like she was doing something back there and pretending like she didn't see me. First off the five star review is for Admiral 4 for store I go to this Safeway store a lot because it is the closest to my house. For the most part most of the employees that work at this location have always been pretty respectful to myself and family (1 manager was rude to me a few months ago). Now with that said there is 1 employee I want to do this review on....Her name is Admiral. She is the lady who does the carts and customer service. Admiral is one of the most sweetest, respectful employees that Safeway has at this location! I always enjoy seeing her face when I come to Safeway. She always no matter what, has a smile on her face when doing her job. When it is pouring rain or if it's over 100 degrees outside she is busting her butt to get the carts collected and sanitized and ready for the customers. Sometimes I will just sit and watch her do her job when I am waiting to checkout and I am just so surprised that some customers can be so rude to her but she still has a smile on her face and still gives great customer service! In my eyes she deserves a raise and deserves to be recognized for the great job she is doing!! So, I wanted to say, Thank you so much Admiral for being such a wonderful person at your job and keeping a smile on your face when helping us customers! Lost my mom's antibiotics prescription, and blamed the dental office for it. When it was resent (2 hours later!) they still could not fill it in because the "insurance website was down". The "pharmacist" had the nerve to say: "Just pay it out of pocket, it is only 20 bucks". Unbelievable! My mom is 74 years old with a disability. They made her wait 2 hours and she still did not receive the antibiotics she badly needed after a dental procedure. When the prescription was transferred to Orangevale Walmart, they were able to give us the meds in 15 minutes! And the website was working. The Safeway pharmacy department does not seem to be interested in the customers' retaining at all. Horrible experience. One day I am afraid they may mess up with a wrong person in a wrong situation and face a lawsuit. read more
