A bigger mess than ever, now with AI powered surveillance! This location was always mid to bad, now the produce and meat sections are mostly a crying shame. Deli and ready made foods? Don't even, seriously don't. Inedible, have thrown away so much from there. Some shady folks about, making me think twice about leaving my phone with my shopping list on my cart as I go up the aisle to grab something. Well founded as someone just took their pick of things and walked out without paying, apparently a "repeat offender". Seems to be happening every other time I go here. MEANWHILE, there is one register open so I go to self checkout. This time I am stopped FOUR TIMES and told to wait for an associate while shown video of myself as if I committed a crime because their famously accurate AI powered surveillance system gloriously decided It detected an item on camera different from what I just scanned or had to manually input. Took me fifteen minutes to check out, waiting each time for one of the three employees working in the front to come and reassure Big Brother that the orange bell pepper was not a red bell pepper of the same price or my six dollar pack of water bottles was what, a six dollar and fifty cent pack of water bottles of a different brand in my cart? All the while, ppl doing I guess the smart thing and just stuffing things in their coat and walking out. Great job Safeway! I will take my business elsewhere with less creepy cameras and creepy customers stealing crappy goods as you spend your money watching ME and wasting my time so you can get into the data mining and predictive analytics game instead of paying employees and ensuring good merchandise. read more

While convenient with plenty of parking and late night hours, this Safeway is pretty small and cramped, and I especially notice that during the school year when the line is packed with students. The store is well-stocked and I can always find what I need, but they NEVER have more than one or two registers open even if the checkout line is all the way out to the deli. The staff has been kind to me, so these stars are primarily for them. The folks at the deli work quickly but meticulously and I've never been disappointed with the food I've gotten from them. Staff members are always eager to help. I would rate this Safeway location more highly if they took their checkout line situation more seriously. People have been complaining for years and it's still a problem. We shouldn't need to spend 10 minutes in a checkout line. read more

I have to give a shout out to the Bakery folks at McKinleyville Safeway. I ordered a cake for my grandson's 5th birthday party. My daughter did not want a lot of cake leftover so she asked me to get a round. When baker/decorator filled the order she noticed that the round was too small to feed our party and made the quarter sheet Spider-Man cake, great looking, at no extra charge. The cake was really yummy, marble cake with custard filling and chocolate frosting, and the kids were so excited over the spider web design. We had one piece left! Thank you Safeway Bakery! If you use your bike, lock it next to the propane shed since there is a lot of activity there. This Safeway is really a pain to shop at most times, the parking lot often times is full - that along with panhandlers and a lurking transient populus always present - it makes just getting in and out a task. There is an outside security guard but he can only be in so many places at the same time. Given credit, this store is clean and well lit with well stocked shelves and it has a large beer and wine selection. However, they do not outweigh the lack customer support or the excessive lines regardless of the time of day. I rarely shop here as it is such a pain in the ass. As most reviews state, there are never enough lines open so expect to wait and some of the employees have little to no customer service skills, to just plain rude (I've actually been pushed by one of the baggers in this location) again - consumer beware - yeah, its cheaper than most every competitor around it, but what are you willing to put up with just to save a few dollars. Ok, as for the employees, I like them. They're helpful and nice. But the frozen section needs work. They're out of most things. My main complaint, is the outside area. There's tweezers and homeless people everywhere. They are at every exit and entrance and they stand right at the door. I get harassed every single time I go in there. Never has more than 2 cashiers even though it's packed. Cashiers are HSU yuppies, pretty awful place. If you can afford the CoOp, go there instead, this place sucks cause of the students. I really enjoyed shopping at this location. The employee were friendly, they had checkout help and I got all the products I needed. I know with the whole covid-19 that it's been difficult for any supermarket but I really Feel out of any of the super markets this store has done a great job about keeping the store in good conditions. It is OK to shop here without wearing masks, I was just told they are incapable of requiring their customers to wear masks. I feel for the checkers forced to compromise their safety. Nothing safe in this Safeway. There are maybe one or two decent checkers, the rest are crap and are hard-pressed to stop their conversations with other employees to ring up your order. I do my grocery shopping over the weekend like most working people and pick up flower on Sunday afternoon. Twice she's told me to come back later. I did and they still were not unloaded. Arcata Safeway will close their self-checkoit section which I don't mind because I understand they need maintenance and such, but they only have one register open and long lines form with only one cashier having to do all the work. I came in today 5/22/21, and yet again only one register was open while four other employees were hanging out in the front area not trying to help by simply opening another register for 5-10 minutes to take care of the line. Whoever is the manager of this store has failed to stress the importance of helping customers at the checkout and instead makes one person take care of upwards of 10 customers. I go here for most of my groceries since I don't have a car and can't get to cheaper groceries in Eureka. The lines are always excessively long and I have found rotten produce out for sale. Their produce section needs some careful attention., The food is not fresh and usually spoils soon after I get it home. The long lines are the worst and this could be changed with proper management. You can't get into any of the entrances without panhandlers accosting you. Since I walk or take the dial a ride, I often have to walk past these people. These are not homeless, helpless people but many are young able bodied individuals who came here to work the pot farms and then get stuck with no way home. The sense of entitlement is evident. It is my job to support them? A much happier shopping experience would be to peaceably do my shopping, get adequate wait lines and know that my food is not spoiled. Now, it is not a happy experience shopping at Safeway in Arcata. The competition's prices in this town are all excessively high for some reason and there are none who have reasonable prices for seniors on a tight budget. read more

I do almost all of my grocery shopping at Safeway, mainly in the Fortuna location. I'm always happy with Safeway brand items and they have pretty competitive pricing for the quality of items they offer. This Arcata location has very narrow aisles, almost shockingly narrow. I asked to use their public restroom, and I was horrified. Their restroom floor appeared to be covered in urine, and upon flushing their toilet, I was hit with the smell of sewage as water came up and spilled out of the floor drain. I was surprised that this bathroom was not being attended to, and that it was still open to both the public and employees for use. read more

I only go here late at night so there are no lines. It's your basic Safeway. It's 24 hours so that's cool. There isn't much to say since it's just your basic grocery store and I haven't had a bad experience. A lot of people on here complain about the homeless people hanging around but they're not aggressive. They'll maybe ask you a question and that's it. Updated Review: now i can see why someone walked out of this Safeway with a basket of food! I recently stopped for a quick shop and when I got to the two operating registers, there were approximately 15 people in each line.....no kidding!! I waited for about 10 minutes with the line barely moving. I asked someone in the line what was going on and they said it was always like this. I waited another 5 minutes and couldn't believe Safeway didn't open more registers. Still 10 people back, I set my basket down and walked out. See ya later Safeway, never again!!!! So, spent a lot of time going from store to store looking for the perfect greeting card. Finally stopped into Safeway for items for a big BBQ we were having and as a plus, found the perfect card. The cashier then promptly placed a package of bloody meat right on top of my card! It was the last card like that and I told him about it. He wiped the juice off the card and gave it to the bagger to go 'put back'! I said, "No, it has blood on it. You can't put that back." They both just stared at me with stupid looks on their faces.
