This is without a doubt my favorite Safeway in the area. On top of being much larger, nicer, and cleaner than the one in Arcata, it's never crowded, always well-stocked, well-staffed, and easy to get in and get out of fast. It's totally worth the five minutes of extra driving to do my shopping here. While I do buy groceries here, most of my visits to this Safeway are for the deli. There is a pretty wide selection, but like most grocery stores the deli selection dwindles after 7 P.M. Nonetheless, I've been pretty satisfied with the food selection and service I've gotten at the deli counter. On occasion the food has been a bit too bland for me to give it a superb rating, but generally speaking, the food is good. I wish they'd have the Cafe chicken salad more often. The staff is friendly but also fast, and I appreciate that. It's nice to do my shopping at a place that doesn't compromise friendly customer service for speed of service and vice versa. I recommend this Safeway to anyone looking for a pleasant and speedy shopping experience. read more

The local chain grocery store in our community. Open early and closes late. Usually always busy, except early in the mornings. It is located in the city center shopping square, in the middle of town on central. This store is smaller than most Safeway's. A decent selection of most items. Seafood and meat counter in the back right corner of the store, dairy and chill juices, etc. along the back. Produce and florist to the left as you walk in. Deli and bakery to the right. I have found that it is near impossible to get in and out of this store when it is busy, usually most afternoons and weekends. The best time to shop this store is early in the mornings, it's usually always quite and easy to move through during the mornings. The new sale prices change every wednesday morning. Mondays are the worst day to shop for selection, this store always runs out of basics over the weekend and usually does not restock until Tuesdays. I know better than to shop at the Safeway in McKinleyville it's always a disappointing experience. Today was no exception. I needed some corn meal which wasn't available where I normally shop so rather than drive to Eureka I mistakenly chose to enter Safeway. The sanitation station just inside the door was lacking supplies, empty, nothing. The 1st employee that I encountered when informed replied "that figures" and continued his task. When I asked to speak to the manager I was informed that she was on her break. I guess that I am just a slow learner. read more

This is the best Safeway in all of Humboldt county. First off this is the only Safeway that is always stocked and has almost everything all the time. They also have the freshest veggies and fruits on display. The lines are so fast because the managers will hop on a register and open up if it is busy. The deli is the best deli as the food is fresh and always hot. The deli area is also always stocked with delicious options. Now let's talk about the staff. Every single staff member is so kind and helpful. They maintain such a positive attitude all day with smiles on their faces. While up north for the Holidays, we decided to prepare dinner on Christmas eve for my guy's family. I love cooking, so I was excited to hop over to Safeway and come up with a plan. This Safeway was easy to get to and had pretty good holiday hours. I found an incredible deal on a huge pork roast that came out amazingly well. The cut was great and was only $10. This pork roast was not only enough for a dinner of 8, but there was enough leftovers to last the next day. Now, if only I could review how great the pork roast was.... ;) read more

Products are great, but staff especially at the self checkout have an extreme attitude when customers have trouble with self checkout. Very quick answers almost as if I'm a bother coming in and grabbing a few things. On 4/2/21 at approximately 10pm, there was an individual working the self checkout and he was extremely rude and short with answers, almost as if he was annoyed I had a problem. Side note, you cant bag groceries as you go so self checkout, so times are doubled as you have to touch every item twice. read more

I want to start off by saying that the people who work at this Safeway are very sweet, and the issues I am about to speak of is not their fault at all. To shop at this Safeway you better have lots of time to stand in lines. No self check out and not a ton of checkers for long lines, ever. In the mornings (I believe till 9 or 10) the only lines that are open is the 15 items or less. That's when I like to shop kid free. And they do the same thing at night. So once again can't shop big without upsetting everyone else who is in line, who are just generally buying beer at night. And if you have WIC you best just go somewhere else all together, the poor Mama's with WIC checks get such slack because it makes the long slow lines lag even longer. Came here twice during my stay with my brother. Typical Safeway for the most part. Lotto machine, Red Box, Lucerne Brand items etc. Open 24-7 which is nice. Things seemed just a bit more expensive though. Example...... It's-It ice cream sandwiches (Multiple flavors btw....Strawberry, Cappuccino, Mint and Vanilla) were $5.00 per box. I have never seen them over $3.50 anywhere else. Shelves weren't completely full of stuff either. Seemed to have a lot less "sale" items, too. Cashiers were friendly enough. If you are a true lover of Safeway Bakery Sweet French Bread avoid this Safeway. They ruin their Sweet French bread.... I've been eating this bread for nearly 30 years.... I love this bread as a kids I would buy this bread while other kids were buying soda and candy. I KNOW this bread. It's big and fluffy and light gold yellow crust. I've been getting bread at this Safeway for a year now as it's the closest to my home. At some point it dawned on me "this bread is wrong" at first I thought it was that the sourdough got out in the wrong bag. But I've looked and looked and looked for the right loaf and never found it.... so I thought maybe Safeway changed their recipe. But NO, last night my husband bought a loaf at the Arcata Safeway and it was the perfect cloud of bread I remembered. So tonight I went to McKinleyville Safeway and looked and sure enough the "sweet" French there still looked like the sourdough. So the guy at the bakery and I get in a debate and he tells me how to identify the difference. How one has the 3 slits on has 2. I'm just like dude- slits it not this bread is wrong.... then he lets me, "ya know, you're not the first person to say this bread is wrong" meanwhile he's still talking to me like I just don't know the difference- he even opens up a loaf of each and says smell. Yeah- they smell different, so it's not sourdough, but that doesn't mean this bread is right. So he gave me the sweet loaf he's opened and says it's complimentary. So get home and pull out the loaf from Arcata Safeway that I save from last night.... and sure enough they look WORLDS apart. Picture speaks a thousand words - so I have added on. And since I'm not the first person who has mentioned it, it doesn't seem like McKinleyville Safeway cares to make sure they are making it correctly. A THANKSGIVING STORY: Jannette's parents raised turkeys for years. Each summer, they would bring home a new bird. It would frolick in the yard with the chickens, and Jannette's family would watch it grow. In November of each year, just before Thanksgiving, the turkey would be "attacked" by raccoons (which was believable, since they had lost kitties, bunnies, and brussel sprouts that way). Then her family got Tom. Tom was the coolest turkey ever. Smart in the way of turkeys.. (Turkeys have been known to open their mouths, stare at rainclouds, and drown). Because of their similarities, it's understandable that Jannette became attached. He was her BBFF (Bird Best Friend Forever). She was SHOCKED to discover that Tom was going to be Thanksgiving dinner that year. As she solved many problems during her childhood, Jannette began to pout and went on hunger strike. Fortunately this worked, and she rejoiced when her mother went to Safeway and bought a frozen turkey. Hallelujah, she saved Tom! *Cheers* UNfortunately, she continued his pre-Thanksgiving stuffing plan and his legs began to buckle under his weight and he became an immobile lump. Her parents humored her for awhile by moving Tom around to different spots in the yard so she would think he was just being lazy. He disappeared one day. Off to play with other turkeys, she likes to believe. UPDATE: Jannette's mother continues to return to Safeway for all of her fowl needs. Elsewhere, Jannette continues to befriend turkeys. read more

I HATE this Safeway. It's almost worth the drive to travel to the one in Arcata, even though that one isn't much better. This one is right down the street from my house unfortunately, so I come here a lot. There is a ridiculously long line, guaranteed every time you go. Once you actually get up to the stand you realize why; every single checker goes as slow as possible, it's almost like a race to see how slow they can check people out. They also stand there and talk to each other over people's heads about the weather...what they're doing this weekend....they need to buy the rest of the beer that's on sale...ya know, normal stuff. Yea, the reviews are true. This is the worst Safeway. The checkout lines are ridiculous; ten lanes and only two are open... the produce is never ripe, and does it seem expensive to anyone else? The deli has some cool workers, but they are always short-staffed, so it takes 15 minutes to get a sandwich at any time of the day. And holy crap guys, what is up with the donuts??? How do you screw up a donut? Their only redeeming quality is their cake decorator. She has some serious talent, and custom made a cake for me that rivaled any Ramone's cake I've ever seen. read more

Just waited 30 plus minutes behind one other person in line only to be told that it was gonna be an extra 20 minutes before I could actually be served a single sandwich. I get it's COVID and that there's only one customer allowed inside the building at a time, but I waited 30 plus minutes to be told I'd have to wait an extra 20 to be actually served; that's ridiculous. First let me say I worked at store 1617 for two years and am very familiar with, at least the former, Safeway policies and duties. This is the worst Safeway I've ever stepped foot in. I'm curious if they even get secret shopped, or just chalk the store up for a 0. Checkout speed is slower than molasses in the winter time *no matter what time of day or how busy*. I've shopped here for a year and never had a checker wish me good day by my last never. Never. Which next to walking by a shopper without making eye contact and asking if they are "finding everything ok" is the biggest mistake an employee can make. I've never been asked if I needed help finding anything. I've ever pretending to be scouring for items I didn't need just to see if an employee would interact with me.
