This is the worst-kept Safeway I've been to in Northern California. The store is old, outdated, and poorly maintained. Don't expect fresh produce or service beyond the bare minimum. Despite having eight checkout lanes, they rarely have more than one or two open, resulting in consistently long lines. When I've asked management why so few registers are open, the responses have ranged from "the thingy isn't working" to "we're understaffed." They've been using the understaffing excuse for literally the past ten years, yet nothing ever changes. The manager is extremely unpleasant and unnecessarily rude. No pleasantries whatsoever so ever. Just barks excuses while she walks away. Be very careful with the produce. I've repeatedly found moldy fruits and vegetables on the shelves, and it's worth checking expiration dates on other items as well. The restrooms are also in poor condition, and the floors throughout the store are consistently dirty. The district manager should be ashamed. They obviously care more about cutting corners than the community that supports this business. There are much better grocery stores elsewhere. Compared to other stores , this is the cleanest store. That's why everyone comes here to American Canyon. The Meat is fresh, produce is good ,floors are clean. Deli is spot on. . Fresh rotisserie chicken. Wrapped sandwiches and they have an outstanding Bakery..... Service is pretty good. I will never use this delivery service again. I ordered a 12-pack of Monster, a 12-pack of Red Bull, and a 12-pack of soda as part of an order. The groceries were delivered, but none of the beverages were included. Over $65 at my loss. At first, I wasn't concerned because the missing items were obvious from the delivery photos. I assumed I could simply request a refund. Instead, after waiting nearly a week for a response, I was told that the missing items did not qualify for a refund. It's unacceptable to be charged for products that were never delivered and then be denied reimbursement despite clear evidence that the items were missing. It only takes once so if you don't mind taking the risk that you will be ripped off of your hard earned money use the service otherwise stay away. During Covid, my local Safeway went through some severe troubles:rampant shoplifting, shootings at the gas station next-door, enormous, gaping holes in the inventory, moldy produce. It was ugly. thank God they've recovered now. I went for my usual semi annual stock up trip to pick up items that Costco doesn't sell. They seem to have moved a few things around. I ended up circling the store twice because I had missed so many items I wanted on the first pass. Safeway has five dollar Fridays, but I went late in the day and they were cleaned out of the choice items. The only items left were the items where the five dollar price barely made a difference. I had been hoping to pick up some fresh meats, but they were cleaned out of all the items I was interested in. I have better luck with my pantry items and picked up all the essentials. Went in to get cheese from the deli. Stood near the deli area for about 15 minutes without any acknowledgement. Decided to then stand in a nearby line to have sandwiches made to talk to an actual person for another 15 or 20 minutes. The clerk said she couldn't help me because she was the only one there. The employees are the most rude employees I have ever encountered. I went in one day and the cart locked up and hit my shin hard. An employee told me that I had to call the 800 number to get assistance for this. She should have immediately gotten the manage. I had to tell her 3 times to get the store manager. The store manager lacked empathy for the situation. A second time I went in the evening and the locked the doors by the produce without announcing it prior. I hit the door not aware of the issue. I send money to my family through Western Union and have had the opportunity to interact with the day manager (an African American woman) on several occasions. She has been rude and terse on each occasion. Today, September 29, 2025, I went to send money through Western Union and did not see the small sign indicating that this service was not available today. The aforementioned manager rudely stated, "Didn't you see the sign?!" I apologized and went to your Safeway in Vallejo on Georgia Street to complete my transaction. Store personnel in Vallejo said that they too had heard from customers that the manager at the American Canyon store was rude to them as well. I was just at this location. First time there. Waited at the meat/deli counter for 15 minutes. The employee was fullfilling an order which was large and the customer continued to add on requested items. That's not the problem. As I stood there, I was not acknowledged, was not given a heads up that this will take an addl 10,15, 20 or 30 minutes, maybe go shop some more and I'll hold your spot. Up to their old tricks again! Thanks to the disrespectful, ignorant behavior of a number of their employees (who resemble unfriendly government bureaucrats), I stopped shopping at Safeway in American Canyon a couple of years ago. However, a few weeks ago, I tentatively returned there - just for my favorite yogurt flavors, simply because other nearby stores don't carry them. I thought optimistically, "What could go wrong if I go there only for yogurts, and use the self-checkout (thus avoiding the employees)?" I should have had second thoughts. They found a way to get me again! I went in there today and headed for my favorite yogurts, which are usually $1.99. To my delight, on the shelves I saw labels advertising their price as 99 cents. "That's great! They're half price! A chance to stock up!" I thought. So I took twice as many yogurts as I had intended to buy. But, at the self-service checkout, they rang up at the full price of $1.99. I brought this to attention of the Safeway employee in the checkout area. She told me, in the unfriendly manner of a government bureaucrat, that the 99 cent price was available only to customers who "scan" some kind of "app" (which I don't have). No apology for the misleading label, no apology for the inconvenience, no apology for wasting my time. She simply went on to say, in an abrupt manner, "Do you want me to take them back?" I replied, "Yes, you can take half of them back." She just picked them up and walked away with them in silence. I examined the 99 cent labels on the yogurt shelves. At first glance, all you see is "99 cents" in large type. But there is also tiny, tiny, tiny writing, which, at first glance, I had assumed to be serial numbers or expiration dates, but, when I looked very carefully, with my eye almost touching the label, there was the "small print" (VERY small print) about scanning the app to buy at the discounted price. So now I'm staying away from Safeway for good (I'll just have to buy my favorite yogurt flavors when I'm in other cities) for two reasons: (1) The staff are just as disrespectful and uncivil as before. (2) They try to trick customers with misleading price labels. A quick tip. I see that a lot of reviews on Yelp describe Safeway's American Canyon staff as rude. I go to this Safeway a lot & every time I've been here I have good experiences. Sometimes I go here for the $5 sushi fridays & there's always a large selection of different sushi rolls when I buy here, also the sushi here pretty good. I have ordered their salmon poke bowl & the salmon taste fresh. The workers at this Safeway are nice & good. Sometimes the person who prep the sushi would inform me if I want a certain sushi roll to be made & told me that the $5 sushi Fridays comes with a smart water(sometimes they have this deal & sometimes they don't, so ask the employees if they do or check on the Safeway app). Went to Safeway today, about 4 PM. Bought just a paper and a greeting card. No physical checkers, only 1 at the liquor area, and 1 at self-checkout area. This was true the other day, too. The employees working the sandwich bar caused me to run late at work because they were joking, and laughing and wasted at least 10 minutes sharing with each other, and other people (not in line) all about a lot of unrelated subjects. Then, because they were not paying attention to customers waiting for their sandwiches, they started giving everyone waiting the "bums rush" and, consequently, in the process of rushing, they poured a large amount of salt and pepper on my sandwich (when I had specified a "small amount" and they left ingredients off of my sandwich that I had ordered. Then, on top of all the rest, I was charged for a "meal deal" that I did not order. Unfortunately, I did not have time to address this. I live near this Safeway in A.C. We shop there at least once a week. After the customer service I received today, I will not be going back. It is a Saturday, so me and my husband wanted to put some steaks on the grill. I am standing looking at the steak section to pick the right pack and one of the Meat Dept employees says loudly, Excuse me. I see he is on the side of me with his rack, so I scoot over and then he rudely says I need to get right there (a spot right in front of me) so he pretty much scooted me out of the steak section all together. I was having trouble with my club card number, and she got so irritated that she might have to void out my order and ring it again. I only had like 8 items, so it wasn't that big of a deal. I will be shopping at Costco, Walmart, and sometimes I drive out to Winco. Winco's prices are the best. I wish we had one here in Vallejo/AC area. I go to this Safeway two or three times a week. It certainly has been busier recently I think because many Safeway is in the area like Vallejo have closed down. I've also noticed a lot of outright theft, people walking out with items, people bringing their own bags in and putting things in the bag then walking out, this seems to be an upward trend. Asked to exchange my case of water because a bottle was clearly pierced and the associate kept repeating "just so you know they are wet because of the rain". Well, so much for this store. After shopping here for 3 years, I have finally had enough of their shenanigans. If you asked 15 employees the same question, you would get 15 different answers. I had been told by workers in the produce section that it was ok for me to chop carrot tops without purchasing the bunch. I would buy one group of carrots and put the tops in with it, so I was buying something instead of walking out with only the tops. I had that system for about a year and a half. Recently, a short new produce worker saw me doing this and told me it was "against store policy." I didn't understand why other workers had given me a green light when it wasn't policy, but I told her i understood, and I wouldn't do it again. Since that time, I would buy the full bunches of carrots, which cost more, but I still got the tops, so I was ok with it. Today, I was putting bunches of carrots into a bag for purchase when I heard a produce manager requested over the intercom. I paid no attention, really, until the produce manager, Amanda, approached me! Amanda told me again that store policy is to not let customers chop the tops of carrots. I acknowledged I had done it before, but I had not after being asked not to. She kept talking about the policy being that way because some people like to buy carrots with tops still attached. Again, I said I understood, and I showed her the bags I had loaded with still intact bunches. She kept telling me that carrot tops are not allowed to be cut in the store. She just wouldn't leave me alone! I asked Amanda directly why she had come over to talk to me, and she said it was to introduce herself. One hell of an introduction. This will be my last interaction with the store. I have no desire to be harassed while shopping. And Dawn, please don't send a response to this saying, "we're sorry about your experience." Why is almost everyone that works there so rude? I have worked in customer service and hospitality for over 20 years. I would have been reprimanded for treating the public how some of the associates treat guests there. Instead of processing a refund because your ad prices are not reflected in the store, I get argued with as if it's my mistake. I'm as polite as they come and that's probably why they walked all over me. Not willing to listen and talking smack about other customers within earshot. At least be discreet. I grew up in American Canyon and every time I visit I swing by Safeway, after all it is the largest grocery store in American canyon other than Walmart. Today I went to purchase last minute flowers for my Father who is in the hospital and boy was that a mistake. It seems from the sight of the flowers "last minute" is the perfect description to replace Safeways word "fresh" because clearly based on the condition of the flowers Safeway gets the last of the fresh flowers. The selection was minimal which is to be expected from a grocery store however The flowers were dead and over priced. Nonetheless I spent $20+ determined to make my dad smile even with sad flowers. Once I got home to put the flowers in a vase the flowers went limp and had no support which was a facade due to the support of the rubber and and plastic wrapping. The worse part was not the dead flowers but the mold on the flower, leafs and steams. Imagine taking moldy flowers into a hospital where people go to recover from illness on top of covid. I go to the customer service counter at around 8:45 am; I'm standing there for a good 5 minutes before I finally get the attention of the 5th employee that's walked by me and ask for assistance at the counter. I have been purchasing online for home delivery. The orders are processed without the discounts coupons you clip for the products in safeway 4 U. I have called the store and spoke to store rep. She was sympathetic and mentioned that this was a glitch and other customers are noticing the same issue. I have called their online department in the past and was told I should be getting refunded.The problem has nothing to do with the fulfilling store but IT issue. I never seem to have an enjoyable experience with this Safeway. The staff is always so rude. I went tonight to grab some grub from the deli for my sister. I was less than excited because the last time I came I had a horrible experience with the sandwich maker. But luckily the guy behind the counter was very friendly and assisted me really quick. I got one of the meal deals and he plated it in a plastic container for me. He separated all three of the food selections in the container before giving it to me. I appreciated it. Then, when I got to line to checkout the checkout guy grabbed the container and rolled it at a 75 degree angle and everything went rushing to one side. I was in SHOCK. Literally who tosses any container of food so stupidly like that? If you went to a fast food joint and they were tossing all your food around like that in the bag would you be cool with it? I was dumbfounded y'all. I couldn't even speak. I just took my items and left and took the first picture while leaving the store. Safeway, this one specifically, please properly train your employees. Waited almost 25 minutes in deli department to get a half a pound of Turkey. Two people were working in entire department. It's ridiculous.

I've shopped here since the day they opened. The lack of care from customer service and high prices had pushed me away. Today I thought I'd give it another try. Prices were still high, but I expected that. The biggest disappointment was the cashier and baggers. No eye contact. Chatted with each other while ringing me up as though I (the customer) didn't exist. Then the bagger left abruptly. I started to help bag and had to take heavy items off my produce that they had bagged and then left. The cashier put my strawberries at the bottom of a bag. I handed her the spinach and asked her to put them on top of the berries so they wouldn't get squished. She put the spinach to the side and proceeded to stack block cheese and yogurts on top of the berries. Which in turn smashed them and strawberry juice was all over the bottom of my bag. I get it! We are still reeling from a down economy and all companies are watching their spending. Unfortunately, at times, it feels as if this Safeway runs a bare bones operation at all day parts. I've been to many Safeway/Vons supermarkets throughout the state of California, but never do I experience as long a wait time at the register as I do here! Whether it's peak time in the middle of the day or at the dinner hour, you can wait to get rung up anywhere from 10-20 minutes. This is also not an exaggeration! Also, forget about quality customer service. Once you reach the register, you are treated to substandard service. Some of the associates spend the time ignoring the customer and converse with the checker next door about who is next for a break or what time they are off. It's time for management to hire friendlier employees and staff up, at least during peak times! I come here more for convenience and the cheap gas. In terms of the market, it's your usual Safeway with the layout/design they have been rolling out the past few years. When we last saw this humble immigrant's son he was squeaking about raisins in his coleslaw. Hold my beer Bear Republic, there is a new offense in town -and it's name is SAFEWAY. The one in American Canyon to be exact. Lunch. This midday meal is in direct competition with breakfast for the "most important meal of the day" Award. I'd say lunch is more important, especially after detoxing from the gallon of coffee I consume each day by 11:30. Betrayed by the decaying effects of caffeine, rendering me "hangry" lunch becomes more important than you can imagine. Today I carefully drove to the Safeway at Am Canyon and decided to have a nice deli "signature" sandwich. *Consumer/Marketing Tip#1: if you are going to call out your deli or any service within the walls of your store - investing in a marketing g campaign and erect special signs, then you have to be on your A or at least B game. Not this mess of an experience. I was at this deli counter yesterday and ordered a sandwich but learned there was no lettuce. Ok, I am not a huge lettuce fan, but still it was a little annoying, kind of like the label in my underwear scratching me annoying... TODAY I decided to give the deli another try. After all - this is the "Signature" deli and that screams bespoke sandos. WRONG. Today I ordered a sandwich only to find - wait for it.......NO LETTUCE again. AND no onions. I know, I know, first world problem. The nice lady making what would be a facsimile of a sandwich incised my bread open and almost her hand as she was having a conversation with her pal. Missing my order (because it did not fit into her conversation) I repeated, Turkey. She asked is smoked Turkey ok? - presumably because she could not see the regular stuff. NO, No I said - she turned away from me (probably upset at my desire for oven over smoked foul) and viola! There it was, oven Turkey unceremoniously resting in a bag on the counter. As she unrolled and peeled shreds of matted Turkey-like meat (2 slices to be exact) she plopped them onto the bread that she previously sliced blindly. The roll was now 1/4" thick on the bottom and about 3" on the top. Not a felony, but makes for a leaky and falling apart sando. As she assembled my sandwich she announced NO LETTUCE AND NO ONIONS. Really? WTF? This is a grocery store AND lunch comes at the same time of day, most days of the week, for most people. How can they not be prepared? Laziness? Bad management? This pathetic sandwich cost me $10 clams and looked like something you get at a third world gas station. I know, I've been to one. Pathetic guys. There is competition. I walked to the produce area and found lettuce and onions. Shocker! They were 60 steps across the store. Yes, I counted my steps to prove a point. Not sure I will go back. But one thing is certain, I can't not tell anyone because no one should pay for this lame service and substandard quality from your "SIGNATURE" deli no less.
