Chamber County Safety...
Daniel P.

Chamber County Safety Rest Area... James Taylor White Safety Rest Area... doesn't matter what you call it I have never felt less safe in my entire adult life: it's about midnight here and I am witness to an odd assortment of vehicles including a sketchy hand lettered theo-political statement van, and an abandoned looking car full up with clothes and stuff and all the windows down next to another automobile of uncertain ownership and operability. add a couple of no-masketeers picnicking in the main building and a guy walking what looked like a mixed breed coyote... I've been in plenty of places during the last half-century and this is not one of them.

Like other reviewers have stated I believe once the sun sets this place morphs into a completely different rest area and the safety part of the name becomes less relevant. I arrived around midnight and parked in a poorly lit parking lot in front of the main building. I did see a number of people off in the distance and they all looked like silhouettes or maybe even shadow people, the well lit interior of the building was empty . Even though I can more than handle myself in less desirable situations I too was second guessing my decision to exit my vehicle and walk to the amenities. As I made my way to the doors I could hear talking in the distance and I could see a cigarette ember illuminate the darkness as it was inhaled followed by plumes of dense smoke. I must say this place is a little eerily but still I decided to take a walk across the planked walkways connecting the buildings, some of the dangers here are clearly identified with colored precise signage and some may not be so I decided to stay on the artificial paths and continued to stretch my legs from the drive. After a short walk in the dimly lit public areas I decided to go back inside to grab a cold bottle of water before getting back on the road, the vending machine was filled with products which were unfortunately all warm it was a little disappointing but again there was a sign stating the status of the machine so I didn't waste any currency and after looking around I realized there were no other options so I made my way back to the parking lot. I noticed several cars had arrived since I pulled in although I hadn't seen any others enter the building I figured they were just here to catch a nap, as I walked towards my rental I noticed all the cars were unoccupied which seemed a little strange so I kept my head on a swivel as I activated my key fob, the car's parking lights provided enough light for me to confidently make my way to the driver's door and entered without any issues although I felt my pulse quicken followed by a sense of relief. As I turned out a shadow appeared, it's stride quickened as my headlamps raked the pavement in front of me I held the brake for a moment as it approached the curb, as it closed the distance I could see it carried something as it continued walking towards the trash dispenser and then with the accuracy of a laser the bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken hit the receptacle and disappeared as she yelled at her teenage kids to go inside and wash their hands, fortunately the restrooms were immaculate ...

Beautiful, clean rest area for the family. This rest stop is hidden among the trees and has lovely walking paths throughout the grounds that take you to a variety of different spots, such as: pavilions with picnic tables, children's playground, restrooms, indoor info center and more restrooms (must wear a mask and no dogs allowed inside)-- just to name a few. The women's restrooms were clean and air conditioned. There's no baby changing table in the women's restroom, however, there is a family restroom next door. There are signs that say "beware of snakes," but what you should really beware of are the giant spiders hanging out among the trees and the pavilion! They're minding their own business and they're really cool to look at, but I couldn't imagine running into one of their webs by accident!!

This is a nice rest stop for cars and trucks between Houston and Beaumont. It looks new and the lobby, bathrooms and outdoor areas are all kept clean and fresh. The rest area is shielded by trees from traffic passing on I 10 which adds to the scenery and helps with the noise pollution. I would give a 4 if it only had more car parking. It's possible you could drive in and not be able to park. Other than that, I recommend stopping here if you need to.

Absolutely the best rest area I've ever been to, hands down! Clean, quiet, far enough away from the road that you're actually able to grab a few winks. And it's in the most gorgeous nature area I have ever seen! There are trails, a boardwalk, and some lake views. Just an all around beautiful rest stop!

I was impressed with the cleanliness and design of this rest stop. The ladies' room was very attractive and clean. It would have preferred if they had a small cafe in addition to the vending machines, but other than that it was a very nice stop. There is a nature walkway and a small playground. Not much for walking a dog, however. Our visit was during midday.

Oh, what a fancy rest stop....

Yes, I'm reviewing a rest stop. More accurately called the Chambers County Safety Rest Area, I prefer to call it the Best Little Outhouse in Texas. While passionate lovers of Buc-ee's might disagree, JTW might be the Best Little Outhouse in the U.S.A. At Milepost 815 on Interstate 10, on the long road somewhere betwixt Houston and Beaumont, is a much-needed rest area. Hell, I'm not going to even call it a rest stop ... it's more like an oasis: the lobby is filled with the cool breeze of air conditioning; a big picnic area; a really spiffy playground; a beautiful historical marker and plaque commemorating James Taylor White; covered porches; separate truck and car parking areas; high-quality vending machines; an interactive historical display; and two ... count 'em two ... sets of men's and women's bathrooms, clean and mural-covered. In the end, calling it a "Safety Rest Area" isn't lip service. You can't help leaving refreshed and sharper as you leave again for the open road.

The BEST place for a stop! This little gem is on the Eastbound side of I-10 between Houston and Beaumont. It is just about halfway between the two cities. This place is a very modern and is a clean place to stop & take a look around. It is air conditioned inside. There are displays to look at and places to sit. They have a plug in for you to charge your electronic devices. The Women's Restroom has ample room for a wheelchair to access. I especially love the tile mural in the restroom. Such a nice touch! Outside, there is a neat fenced in playground for the little ones to use up some energy with little fear of them running off. They will be safe from the vehicles coming and going while they play. There are also paths for taking walks around the area. The surrounding area is so lush and green and a serene place to take a nature walk. Any traveler passing through this part of Texas should stop here and take a look, at the very least!

Awesome rest stop with air-conditioned building and clean rest rooms. The nature walkways are beautiful with points of interest for the kids as well as a playground for them. Obey the signs! Avoid poison oak and rattlesnakes!

They charged $150/night for a king bed, mini fridge, and microwave. From the outside, I had my reservations, but nothing prepared me for when we opened that door. The smell was horrid. Can't put my finger on it, but it was like a chemical mixed with body odor smell is the closest thing to describe it. The light beside the bed was just a bulb crewed into socket. There was a phone jack pulled out the wall just hanging there. The smoke alarm was just for show because you could clearly see it wasn't connected. The vanity area, and I use that term lightly, had a plug in that was broken and didn't work. I opened a drawer and they had a dead roach and roach eggs and dirt, didnt open any other drawers after that to see their nastiness. Husband and I both took showers and both times, the floor flooded so don't know what was up with that. The entrance door, when closed, had at least a half in crack around entire door. I had a slice of cheese still in wrapper on the table and next thing I know a roach was crawling on it. I am so glad we had lysol wipes, germ x, and spray with us. No sleep that night because we were scared/disgusted to touch anything. My husband and I made the choice that night to just head back home and hope the hurricane spares us. Also, there is literally nothing but a gas station near. Anything else you need or want such as a place to eat, you have to get back on the interstate. In my opinion, this place needs to be shut down. Some may say that it is better than having to sleep in your vehicle... NO! NO ITS NOT! I do have photos, but not sure if I can post them here.

This might be a long rant, but please save yourself from this "hotel"…read more Stayed here passing through on our way to another state. Pulled in pretty late at night, about 2 am. We booked the room through a third party app and requested one king size bed, non-smoking, pet friendly for 2 adults. When I checked in I was asked if I had pets, I said I had two small dogs and paid the additional $15 dollars for having dogs. That must've triggered them to change our room because we then got what I imagine was a "pet friendly" room. But it was more like an abandoned room. The entire place smelled like an ash tray. It had to have been a smoking room despite the "no smoking" sign outside. Everything, the walls, the beds, curtains, furniture, shower curtain smelled like cigarette smoke. And it wasn't the smell you get used to after about 30 minutes, it penetrated your nostrils and lingered. We then start looking around and there's gunk on the walls, stains on the corners of the room, mold on lamp shades, drywall chunks missing, trash under the beds, cigarette burns on all the bedding and what looked like dry blood on the comforter. The damage to the walls and stains on the lower portions of the walls must've come from previous dogs that I'm sure stayed there and were left unattended. But everything else, it was from lack of caring for the cleanliness of this room. I've attached photos of everything I could capture. Needless to say, I feel robbed of $85 dollars. We would've been better off sleeping in our car. When my spouse let the front desk know the room was filthy, they said they would let the room service personnel know, but at this point the room just needs to be burned down. The ONE positive note is we left there without bed bugs. Gotta look at the bright side. Stay away from this place if you can. This isn't a hotel, or a motel for that matter.

Another rundown motel. My non smoking room smelled like an ash tray. Everything is very old and…read moremusty in the room. Relatively clean except for the coffee maker that has never been cleaned.
