I am new to Beverly, MA. There are no black or Dominican Salons that I could find. Someone told me…read morego to Union Street so I googled it and found Jay's Beauty Salon. I called because new town, new culture. In NYC, Dominican salons do only walk-ins. Not here. I made an appointment and I was set. For a Saturday appointment, I was ready to spend the whole day here because that is what I have always experienced but NOPE. I walked right into a chair with my stylist, Petronila. Don't steal my stylist but she is AWESOME. But as I look around, I think I would have been fine with anyone here. Everyone speaks English here, which wasn't the case in NYC all my years getting my hair done. For me, this makes my experience more personal. In NYC, Dominican Salons are like immersing in a culture. I am polite and learn the rules. But there isn't anything to learn here. It's just easy. My hair is washed, my scalp is so clean! It feels great. The shampoo chair is a recliner. I love recliners! I try to keep from falling asleep. When I get a deep conditioner, they place me under a steamer! This is a game changer. I believe using a steamer at home during the pandemic added the moisture that made my hair grow inches. This is a first for me in a salon. And of course I got my hair roller set and under the dryer. I am going to cut to the chase. My hair looks FABULOUS when I left. UPDATE: I have gone back weekly for a while now and this is my salon! I went natural so I could get coloring, balayage to be exact. Maybe I will now.

I purchased the livingsocial.com deal for a wash, cut, blowdry. I had never been to this salon…read morebefore and I'm desperate to find a new stylist that I can be loyal to :-) I have had some scary experiences (I think a few of them are on yelp!). When I first walked in, I was a little confused. There wasn't a receptionist so I just took a seat, someone came over a few minutes later to greet me. I then waited a few more minutes and a woman came and said she was going to wash my hair and I could have a seat at the wash station. A few initial observations - this place is very small. VERY small. They are also VERY busy so all the chairs were occupied with stylist behind them making things very tight. There are two wash bowls in the middle of the salon. I sat and waited. It was a little awkward. I almost wish she had just let me wait in the seating area. I had my hair washed - very relaxing and nice and then I had to go back over to the seating area and wait for my stylist..it was only a couple of minutes. Jess was my stylist and she didn't introduce herself, I only knew her name because when I made the appointment they said it would be with Jess. So needless to say, we were off to a rocky start. I wasn't feeling super welcome or super comfortable. However, once Jess started talking to me and we had a good conversation going, it was very nice. She was very warm and I was happy feeling I was in good hands. Overall, I was happy with my hair cut. I will be back to see Jess. A few notes about the salon. It was very warm (temperature wise) in there. I was sweating..eww. Also, it's very "swampscott-ish" - meaning the other clients walk around like they own the place and I wouldn't go in there and share "what you heard last night over dinner" because I guarantee someone in there knows someone you are talking about. That would be the only reason I wouldn't go back - which is a shame because I did like my hair, I just didn't necessarily love the environment which is not really the fault of the salon. I'm not sure how you would resolve that..but if you want a good cut I would recommend Jess.
