Hands down one of the best parks in Bergen County…read more The Wild Duck Pond Area part of Saddle River County Park is not huge by any imagination, but it's definitely one of the nicest and more peaceful parks with the duck pond and its fountains. And, if you're a resident of the county, then you'll clearly know that no playground compares to Van Saun's, but this park's playground is relatively larger than most and quite clean. On our most recent visit on a super gorgeous Spring Saturday afternoon, it was busy, but not overly crowded. Besides the pond and playground, there are multiple picnic tables on the park grounds for those looking to have a nice picnic or small gathering. Like I said, it's one of the nicer parks and playgrounds in the area and worth the trip if you're looking for a low-key, yet nice playground for your kids to play at.

New Overpeck Park 40 Fort Lee Rd…read more Leonia, NJ 07605 This 811-acre park does not compare to the liveliness and energy of other large parks such as Central Park or Van Cortlandt Park, but there are still many ways to stay occupied. The trails are on wide, level black pavement. It's a perfect time to take a stroll either individually, with family or friends, or with a domestic pet. While walking, I highly recommend wearing sunscreen and/or a hat. Drink plenty of water because there are minimal trees leading to no shade on the trail. If you want to get your heart rate up, go for a jog or bicycle ride. Multiple benches are stationed throughout the trails. Or, you can always bring your own lounge chair or blanket to find a quiet spot to sit and chill. It's a great place to set up a picnic while admiring breathing taking views of the Manhattan Skyline. During the warmer seasons, the Overpeck Park Kayak Center is open. Feel free to rent a canoe or kayak and paddle the Overpeck Creek. In addition to boats, the Kayak Center also rents out fishing rods for prospective anglers. However, a valid NJ freshwater fishing license is required. To avoid any fees, all visitors have the option to bring their own equipment. A fairly large playground is on site for younger children. They may play on the jungle gym, swing set, climbing webs, and slides. There are multiple parking lots available throughout the park. Some of them have an EV charging station for electric automobiles. It's a fun way to spend a summer afternoon, even if you aren't experienced. The waters are pretty calm, and it's a good upper body work out. If there's not parking nearby, there are other lots. So depending on what you're looking for outdoors, this is a nice oasis for the otherwise very urban areas in North Jersey.

The center features both an indoor and outdoor experience. The outdoor experience offers well maintained nature trails which circumvent a large duck pond where you wild find swans, turtles, waterlillies and other wildlife. A beautiful gazebo overlooks the pond and is surrounded by flowerbeds. Hiking along the lake trail will take you to a two story observation deck. Many people use the paved entrance road to walk or jog. It is a one mile go-around with many joggers the day I visited. For those interested in an up close look at a red-tailed hawk, owls, pigeons and a red fox, the center has caged environments especially for that purpose. The indoor environmental center is a good sized facility designed to educate visitors about native fauna and flora. There are two main rooms. The room off the looby has a variety of fis tanks displaying turtles, snakes, frogs, etc.. Educational displays feature charts, photos, taxidermy and artifacts. I particularly liked the bear display. Adjacent to this room is the observatory room. Large windows give you an opportunity to view the duck pond and wildlife. This room has displays ranging from bats, bees, trees, etc.. Well maintained restrooms are available. In summary. While this is not comparable to a large zoo. it has many things to look at and experience for a well spent morning or afternoon. If you have young children, this is a great pond to introduce them to fishing. A simple worm on a hook is almost guaranteed to catch sunnies. If you're a little more skilled (or lucky), there are bass here too. One thing I appreciate is that there aren't nuisance snapping turtles like you'll find at some other local ponds. Pack some sandwiches, bring the family dog, and spend a few hours here. It's a peaceful park that's rarely crowded. Park in the main lot off Grotke Road. The main pond is just a short walk down the path, where you'll see a fountain spraying from the middle. There's also a small office building by the parking lot with restrooms. Beyond the pond, the park has a ball field, courts, a practice wall, hiking trails, a playground, and a large open field. A stream winds along much of the outer edge of the park and makes for a peaceful walk. Just keep an eye out for poison ivy... it's everywhere. And one last piece of advice...take lots of pictures of your little ones. One day, they might be the ones bringing their own kids back here.
