Dealing with the staff was easy (via phone or in person) - super friendly folks with all the answers to our questions. They have a nice little practice green, and a great driving range. The whole facility is well kept. The course is in really good shape. Probably the fastest greens I've played all season. We didn't notice many (any?) weeds. The greens were clean, and the immediate rough around greens and fairway were pretty decent. The layout is fairly basic - just par 3s and 4s (for the primary 9 at least - we didn't hit holes 10, 11 or 12). The most "character" you'll find is a picturesque tee shot over a mid-fairway fountain. No dog-legs are bends on this course - all straight shots. Along with straight shots - accuracy is required as most holes are pretty tight. There's not a lot of forgiveness if you're not in the fairway. You'll be in the woods, prairie grass or, on the more "open" holes, punching out from under a tree. I'd consider playing here again. Would I pay rack rate? Probably not when I could find a round at a full par-72 course for a couple more bucks. But getting a deal helps (see various golf deal websites) If I lived close, I'd consider a membership as it's fairly affordable for what you get.

I have golfed several courses at Brandon Dunes and, minus the ocean, there were a lot of similarities. The complex is beautiful. We walked the public trail that surrounds the course prior to golfing so we could see a few of the holes. We also ate $1 tacos at Craig's Porch for lunch which is open to the public as well. We golfed the Sand Valley course. The course is well maintained as you must walk it (no carts). We used a caddie and David was excellent. Great to chat with and provided sound advice throughout the day. Now if I could only execute consistently on his advice.... They just opened the new practice facility so we hit some balls at the range prior to our round. I have a cart ready golf bag so I had to switch out to one with legs. I golfed green silver which is listed as 5087 yards which is a good distance. There are several combo options so you really can choose a distance that is just right for you. The sand is all waste bunkers so no need to worry about club placement and raking. We played in just over 4 hours with two in our group. We waited on most holes for the group in front of us to clear. Not a lot of women on the course, if that intimidates anyone. I had a few pars so I think I held my own. Really a great experience. I hope to come back to golf the other courses.

The golf courses are fabulous and, for lack of a better word, big. Sand Valley is the signature and is challenging, Mammoth is a bit more kind to an average golfer. The Commons is a twelve hole course and probably the easiest of the group; Sedge Valley is a par 68, also pretty forgiving. There's also 17 holes of par 3 (mostly chip/putt) that is there for fun; many folks play in bare feet. Lido is the one that most normal people can't get on...rumored to be, like Sand Valley, a real challenge. The golf is terrific. The client service -- everywhere we turned --- was also outstanding, from caddies, to starters, to rangers, to servers...clearly a client service culture. The are on-course food/bev "gimmicks" -- one dollar brats, one dollar Italian beefs, etc. The ice cream sandwich is celebrated (ad made in Iowa!). The drinks are very reasonably priced; water is complimentary. Unimpressed by the food and bev at the restaurants -- pretty predictable fare; I'd have hoped there would be some form of fine or at least finER dining available. Only so many burgers and chicken sandwiches and cheese curds and chicken wings one can have. Also had a DREADFUL service challenge at their pizza place at the Sedge Valley course -- took forever to get our apps and entrees...two of us ended up not even eating ours because we were out of time. Two points of bone disappointment. The first --- temporary -- is that the practice facility is massively too small for this size and quality of resort. I gather that's being addressed and that a new, large facility should open soon. The second came when our group went to shower after 18 holes in sweltering heat. The locker room and showers at the main lodge are embarrassingly small, not well kept up, and otherwise unworthy of a facility of this caliber and price point. Several hundred dollars for a round was ok --- but I'd have hoped for something a lot better than what was basically a YMCA gym for a place to clean up.

I've been golfing Deer Valley for many years, and I love it there - it's my "go to" course,…read moreespecially when I can't find a great deal on something else. First, Deer Valley is an affordable course. I love to golf, but can't afford to shell out top-shelf prices for a round. HOWEVER, Deer Valley isn't exactly a cheap "hacker's course". There's a wide variety of hole styles to keep your attention, highlighted by their signature par-3 #5 that takes you 120 yards out, but straight down to a soft green. The view is intimidating, but it's a hole you could shoot at for hours. Immediately after #5, you're challenged to drive over the rocky, steep face that you just came down. There are holes with blind tee shots over hills, hard dog-leg turns, and plenty of terrain to navigate. I haven't even mentioned hole #1 - a long par 5 up a big hill (and almost always into the wind). Once you get past that hole, the rest doesn't feel too bad. Deer Valley is extremely scenic with tee boxes overlooking vast valleys. In the fall, the colors are breathtaking. Being removed from the big city, it's one of the most peaceful courses I've been on. Keep an eye on your ball, but don't forget to take in the scenic views and watch for wildlife! It's beautiful there! The new "Valley" nine is nice, but I still like the Ridge and Prairie best. Valley is a little tighter and most of the holes run in, you guessed it, the valley... Definitely a course worth hitting. If you're a prude and want to be addressed as "Mister", have your clubs cleaned by some high school boy working for tips, go somewhere else. If you're looking for a course that is great bang for the buck, to hang out with some friends and have a great time - hit Deer Valley.

Today, I had a reason to be in that area, so I grabbed me a tee time. My start was a little awkward. With the pandemic in full swing, you can tell that folks up in that area really don't give a rip. The guy working the clubhouse was wearing a mask, but nobody golfing there did (while inside the office). Actually, just one did (out of the 25+ people I saw that morning). That probably feathers into the "small town" course vibe as well as everyone pretty much knowing everyone else that golfs there. Except for me. Anyway, that was just disappointing, and I did not let that affect my review of the course itself. Tee times were wide open (online), yet I found the place to be quite busy. I let a large group (league??) finish going out ahead of me (and my pre-booked tee time) as I didn't want to be stuck in the middle of the "in crowd". And that was fine. More groups came in after us - it was a full slate. I assume it was mostly locals just showing up, as I stated that online tee times were wide open. The course played decent for the most part. There were some interesting doglegs, some narrow fairways, and challenging greens. Did I forget where I was and I think I was at a swanky Wisconsin Dells course? No. But, I was having a nice time and the course played well. Some of the off-fairway areas were a bit dry and sparse, causing some shots off of hard dirt (shame on me for being there, I guess!). Nicer courses don't have that so much, but hey - you get what you pay for. We hit the course on a Monday because we thought it wouldn't be busy. But their $23 Monday special (18 w/cart) is obviously quite the draw for the retired golf community there. I can't blame them! Would I golf here again? Yeah, probably - if I had another reason to be up in that neck of the woods. I'm not sure I'd pay rack rate here when I have better options closer to home. It's a decent golf course that serves its local community very well. The "clubhouse" was quite small - just an counter with a few things for sale. To get food and drink after your round, you'll need to head next door to the Northshore Restaurant (also where the bathrooms are).

You can almost got on with short notice and even fees during peak times are not bad. The course is pretty well maintained and good for beginner and intermediate play. And although the driving range is out of the way, you can get a token and a glass of wine on the cheap However, there are some super annoying things. I don't love teeing off on a par 3. There are not a lot of water hazards. But the most bothersome thing is the lax standards for a country club. People in jeans, t-shirts, spandex leggings and tank tops. You see groups of 5 and 6 frequently. People have their kids hanging on to the back of the cart and driving around. It's just not classy. And we got paired with some moron with a Trump towel and crap on his bag. Leave your nonsense at home. Baraboo already has a garbage reputation - no need to reinforce it.

The course has a lot of character with mature trees and lots of elevation changes. Watch out for #8! It feels like a whole they wedged into the middle of the course and it doesn't quite fit right. A good tee shot might give you a good look through a narrow opening in the trees to an uphill approach to the green. Figure on a drive, pitch, then long club to get to the green. It is what it is. Other holes shorten your tee shot with a creek, ravine, or other feature. If you like to let the big dog eat, you'll have to wait a few holes. I don't think we hit driver until #5. There are plenty of scenic views as it sits at the foot of the hills of Baraboo. It's quite beautiful, especially with the fall colors in full swing. Watch for the deals and hit this course when you get a chance. A few memorable holes will stick in your head and make you want to come back for another round!
