we had Mother's Day brunch here. we've been here two years previously and it was great. we went today and were disappointed. the food in the chaffing dishes was cold. the dessert table was empty and not refilled. they ran out of the beef and though they said it was coming out it never did. they did have omelets made to order and a nice salad bar they also had ham. First timers at Friday Fish Fry & were beyond pleased!! The breading on the fish is so light and tasty! The clam chowder was delicious. The hush puppies were yummy. Jen is a fixture that we were grateful enough Tj have be our server tonight. She gave us a lot of history, since she is a 4th generation family member of the original owners. Anyways we went here on a Saturday night for dinner and drinks, crazy enough we have lived less than a mile from here for 17 years and never had dinner here mainly because one time we stopped for a drink and the previous owner basically told us he doesn't cater to locals just the individuals who visit from out of town. Regardless there are new owners so we decided to give it a try. The drinks were fantastic and the bartenders were amazing as for dinner it was ok, I opted for the fish tacos which the fish was fried a bit too long and the tortilla chips were stale my husband had the prime rib which he liked but there was no au juice. I'm completely willing to go here again especially for drinks since the new owner was such a sweetheart. I heard the Tuesday night cookout is fantastic so I think we will try that read more

NO NO NO!! I thought new owners would make some good changes but not seeing it after 2 seasons. Hope they take the winter to work in each cabin, fix what's broken and clean like mad! Address mold snd bug issues & sagging floors. Beach needs raked everyday, as well as, in front of all cabins. Who wants to step on beer caps, cig butts, trash, etc. On the upside I hope next year is a better year for the owners. I really do want them to succeed! read more

This place is an all inclusive resort. Great food, great bar with a golf course across the street. But the best thing about this resort are the people. The owners are hands on and help drive the fun part. The staff is attentive and there is something going on every night of the week. With the lake front beach, plenty of areas to walk and the restaurant with a great menu, come for the week and you never have to leave. Highly recommend and very reasonably priced. read more

Receptionist very professional. Patrick the bartender made excellent drinks, and a very nice, bright guy. The fish fry was good. The golf course across the road was excellent. The locals all very warm, friendly and mostly drunk, but cool. That's the good news. The Bad news: Cabins are dirty, run down, broken furniture, sinking couch, broken chair in bedroom, chest drawers were also broken, filthy blanket with dog hair stuck to it. Carpets stained, deck covered in mold, towel rack in bathroom fell down. Holes in wall poorly patched and painted. Just no upkeep at all. Badly needs some of the revenue put back into the maintenance of the units. They need a good qualified maintenance guy. My favorite part: The fans blowing "fresh" air into the kitchen are blowing in from the peacock cage, so the fans are clogged with peacock crap and feathers. If we had known that before we ate in the restaurant, we would NEVER have eaten there. I think the owner is a real tosser drunkenly who brags about stupid crap, like his car, the walleye he caught, etc. He has no idea how to manage the place. I would promote the receptionist and Patrick the bartender, and fire the owner. Then I would drastically improve the quality of the cabins, their furnishings, the walls, the paint, etc. Then I would revamp the menu with simple, hot, delicious menu items. (One of our group ordered the chicken parm, and could not eat it.) We had a great time, golfing, drinking, drinking some more, but boy, does this place need to spruce itself up!! I would say it was good value, but not based on the condition of the accommodations. All of the staff members seemed like their hearts were in it, except for the wanker owner. read more

This resort is a diamond in the rough! The rooms were dated but had all the needed amenities. We stayed with a large group and the new owners we SO accommodating! Excellent food, a clean beach and live music in the evening. We will definitely be back. read more

Visited towards the end of the tourist season in August. Worst fish fry I've ever had. Nearly inedible. We had a party of 6, all ordered the fish fry. They brought us out a bowl sized like you might have at home to serve mashed potatoes in. It had french fries on top, fish on the bottom. We had to wait several minutes to ask for more fish. By the time everyone got fish, we were filled up on french fries. I think every person got one, maybe two pieces of fish. Both fries and fish were soggy and nearly inedible. I was very embarrassed, as I brought everyone to this place thinking that it would be as wonderful as a prior visit was earlier in the summer. Throwing everything together in one big greasy bowl is an incredibly stupid idea. It would be nice if the plates and silverware matched, as well....they did at our earlier visit in May. As with most seasonal resorts, I think the trick is, if you're going to eat there, to hit them early in the season after they open in the Spring....definitely before the 4th of July. As the tourist season ages, the amount of 'give a shit' that the staff seems to have wanes. By the time of our visit in mid-August, it was clear that no one gave a shit about anything but waiting for the end of summer. Of course, Scharenbergs are hardly alone in this attitude. Half of Door County operates like this as well. It's a pity. A tip to those who operate seasonal resorts -- Don't bother opening if you aren't going to commit to a full season worth of effort, and don't be pennywise and dollar foolish. It's a beautiful old resort. But I won't be back...to eat, anyway. read more

The owners have little interest in customer feedback, and are more willing to tell you why you are wrong, then devote any effort into turning their reviews around. I have been here on a handful of occasions at the urging of other people. It is obvious that if you go here and have a good experience, it is the exception, rather than the rule. My number one issue with this place (though I have many) is child safety. While eating at a picnic table in front of our cabin the top of the table detached from the base and nearly flipped over onto a small child in our party. If not for the quick reaction of an adult the child would have been badly injured. We also found numerous pieces of rusted metal and other sharp debris on the kids beach. Likewise, a pregnant person in our party unwittingly spent a night under an air conditioner that was spewing out black mold. In each case, the problem would have been prevented by good old fashioned effort and maintenance. But the management here seem to have convinced themselves that by calling their resort "rustic" they avoid any need to keep the place up. Don't be fooled. Bottom line: eventually someone will be badly hurt here. Don't let it be your kid. read more

The restaurant food is terrible. The cabins are run down and poorly maintained/equipped. Make sure to check if your cabin has air conditioning before booking in the warm months, or better yet, book somewhere else. I am all for nostalgic trips back to the old family summer getaways of the past, but unfriendly and unprofessional staff (in my experience) combined with a lack of proper upkeep and has left this retro "resort" in the dirt. read more

Good for Friday fish fry. They have corn fritters that come with the all-you-can-eat fish fry that you must try. Their clam chowder is pretty delicious and the fish was juicy and battered to perfection. Perfect example of WI fish fry in a place that you might never know existed. It's a pretty cool atmosphere, especially in the summer, as they sit right on White Lake with peacocks roaming the premises (yes, peacocks... incubated and bred right there... and no, they are not on the menu). Don't know about the golf or resort as I have never stayed there. read more

I went to White Lake as a little girl growing up in Princeton in the 90's. We came nearly weekly in the summer for dinner on Wednesday nights. Always fond memories. Fast forward 20 years and I was on the hunt for a casual wedding location where we could have everything at our finger tips, including meals, lodging, golf, beach, etc, while not breaking the bank. I stumbled back on White Lake Resort. Truth be told, didn't look much different, and that was the best part. All I wanted was a fun weekend party - no stuffy sit down dinners, no grand march or wedding DJ's chicken songs. Just good food, dancing music, and a place to call home for a couple of days. Sarah and PJ saw my vision, and delivered 2000%. Sarah and I communicated weekly, as she quickly answered my questions and accommodated my requests. We had guests from Thursday to Sunday. They set up karaoke for us Friday night, which was beyond fun. Saturday was better than I could have expected. Twinkle lights, self serve beer and wine, beautiful beach back drop, awhile PJ served up an amazing array of food bars (think tacos, sliders, potatoes, German bar of pretzels and pickles... I heard the fish tacos were the star of the show). Everything was on point, and executed wonderfully. PJ and Sarah's staff were there all weekend, day and night, from maintenance, to bar-tending, to cleaning crew, to ensure a smooth process. I can't thank these folks enough for the great memories we now hold, and for the fun wedding weekend we had. Its not the Osthoff, or even Heidel House, but if you are looking for down to earth, true Wisconsin hospitality, come no further. read more

Our family rented a pontoon boat for a family reunion weekend. We aren't fancy people, but this boat was in terrible shape. Besides being dirty with webs and bottle caps everywhere, it had a cracked rail, and no ladder for entry into the water. The key to the boat broke in half, and the rope to the anchor was so frayed and worn that we lost the anchor. On top of it all, when we went to return the boat we were charged for the key and the anchor. If you rent from these folks, be sure to inspect everything first and note things that might not be in great condition. Or, you could be on the hook for items not well-maintained... read more

Worst place I've ever stayed. Bugs in the bed and shower. Mold all over the place. Linens seemed like they were washed, but there was other people's hair all over sheets, pillows, pillow covers and blankets. The pillows were stained yellow. Stains on ever piece of furniture and the flooring. The smell of the place ruined it from the start. Smelled rotten and like pee. The same staff that cleans is the also the waitress staff. Honestly, the food/restaurant and bar were great, but they seriously need to hire a professional contractor and cleaning crew to fix everything that's broken and "actually" clean. The second night we were there the ac the water causing a vibration that sounded like a small engine going off in our room. Most of the places don't have ac so we were supposedly lucky. All and all, a pretty crappy place. Went there for a weekend with my girlfriend and a group of her friends for a steampunk gathering of sorts. The bungalows are pretty beat up and trashy. They are dirty, almost everything is broken or looks like it has been badly abused for decades, and the kind of old, filthy furniture that they have, people in Chicago throw out in the alley. When I walked into the restaurant to grab a cup of coffee in the morning, I was greeted with the stench that can only come from a kitchen that hasn't been cleaned in a really long time. Not to mention, the coffee was so watered down, it looked more like a tea. The replacement was a but south of lukewarm. The culmination of this hellish experience came when later in the evening I entered the bar, while accompanied by my trained medical assistance dog. She was wearing her service vest, yet the owner, PJ Shultz (a guy with quite the negative reputation online) told me in a pretty angry way that my dog can't be there even before I had made it to the bar. I told him that she is a service dog and that according to the Americans with Disabilities Act is allowed everywhere I go. His response was to tell me that this is his place, that he makes the rules, and he is kicking me out, and I need to leave. I told him he was wrong in responding this way, and that it's not even me, but the ADA that says that my dog is allowed to be with me. I even added a chuckle, trying to diffuse the situation. His wife joined him in the passing match, grabbed my face with her hand, turned it her way so she can yell at me that this is their place and they make rules. I will spare you the details of how degrading and humiliating this experience was, as well as the lies the owner told my girlfriend who went to talk to him (mind you, she knows him, and the event we attended is an annual one, always drawing the same crowd). But in a few words, a despicable human like this has absolutely no place in the hospitality industry. read more

I have been coming here for twenty years!! I don't stay at the resort, we have a house here. The food has always been mediocre. This year we decided to try again. There was no one in the restaurant I thought maybe it was a sign to leave. We stayed and I am glad we did. The chefs special was excellent. I could not get over how great it was. We're avid fishermen, and occasional duffers, the place is gold. The lake never goes bad due to weather changes, and the course is about as tough as you need. Was looking for a vacation cabin resort where my family of four could spend a week every year. Would like to give the kids some memories like we have from my grandpartents cabin. I thought I knew what to ecpect given that cabin cost $800 for 7 nights, has lake swimming (Nice clean lake!), boat rentals, restaurant/bar and game room. These all take money for up keep. My husband and I were both expecting an outdated cabin with older funature, appliances and bathroom. We stayed in "Golfview 2" as it has A/C and we could bring the dog. (Didn't have to spend more money to board the dog somewhere and temps this summer have been 90+). What we did not expect was the dirty apprearance we were met with. I am allergic to large amounts of dust and mold. I sat on the couch, with the A/c on, for 5 minutes as my eyes watered, sneezing, coughing and blowing my nose all night. In the morning asked the office to vacuum furnature, A/C wall unit was covered in dust, shower faucet trim plate and towel bar falling off wall. THEY JUMPED RIGHT ON IT - GREAT! We went to the beach & symptoms so much better upon return. The things we asked for were fixed. However, this was supposedly the second time housekeeping had cleaned this place in 24 hours and they still missed cob webs in a couple coners of floors and ceilings. During our stay we had so many things that made our stay uncomfortable. Kitchen table legs ready to fall off, bathroom and kitchen faucet handles cruddy with mold/mildew, gease splattered all over kitchen and other walls, holes in a couple walls, rust or food caked on outside of refigerator, the game room covered in spider webs, feathers and dead bugs, I could go on and on. In fact, I didn't want to simply complain about things. I wanted to enjoy my vacation. I made a list of the things that disappointed /reasons we would not return in hopes that they could fix some things and make someone else's stay better than ours. Who else would do this? I presented this list upon early check out. We were told they could have fixed anything we needed if we would have just asked. Aren't you supposed to clean the room and make it inviting before we get there? We were told the maint. man had a medical appointment the day we checked in so he wasn't able to swing through our cabin the day we checked in. Come on, you're telling me the last guests went through and removed screws, checked out, waited for housekeeping to be done, broke in and filled the place with dust? We left 2 days early as we spent as much time as possible away from this cabin. We did not patronize the restaurant nor did we rent any boats because, frankly, we didn't want to give them any more money. There really isn't anything to do execpt swim for you 6 & 10 yr olds. The 2 surrounding towns are very small (found a movie theater and a city park, but no mini-golf or anything). Traveled to Wisc. Dells one day - this we could have done anytime. The peacocks that roam the property are cute, but if you grill out several gather around the grill and food. One of the other reviews has a response from the maint. man and it's from about a year ago. The response mentions this guest waiting a long while to review, but it sounds just like our cabin so, clearly, nothing has changed. read more
