They not only cared for my child medically, but they also gave us reassurance and comfort during one of the most difficult moments of our lives. And the nurses--WOW! I had an 8 am appointment and I was seen almost immediately after being checked in. The ultrasound technician who works with me was Rebecca - I believe. She was so incredibly patient with me and explained every step of the process. I was nervous and they made sure to ask me if I was okay, if I was comfortable and I really needed that that day! The facility was clean and the waiting room had coffee and tea for the patients who were waiting. There was also a tv, magazines and lockers to stow your belongings.

He has violent outbursts and tells my sister and I that he's in a prison and a lot of other horrible things. I will say this is a predominantly African American patient facility and my father is older and has asked if there were any other people he could have a room with that were like him, which we understood his meaning. Unfortunately there are not, and they put him in another room with a man who doesn't speak because he is dying. It's a sad place to be, and most people are very ill. We feel for our father but I have to say since I called to complain about a lot of things, they have made some serious effort in attempt to make our father happier. The problem is my father will never be happy again. He was an alcoholic for 60 years who is now sober and he has brain damage from a hemorrhage about 8 months ago and it's only made matters worse for him and my sister. I don't wish anyone to go through this with their parents, because it's taking a massive toll on my sister's health back home. I'm in California and the calls I get have been crazy, and not very accurate. After coming to realize and talk with several helpful and very polite staff members, that what I was being told months ago wasn't altogether accurate. This is a facility where you come to rely on because you have Medicare and Medicaid. They helped our father get Medicaid, too. We don't have private health insurance, and this is one of the few places that take in patients with limited financial resources. We spend a lot on his other needs, like the diapers he likes, razors he wants, Fixodent, mouthwash, food he loves, and taking him out once in a while which adds up. But it's a facility that does their best with the budget they have and the people are actually very nice.

I simply called to verify that the order had been received before making the trip to the laboratory. Instead of receiving a straightforward answer, I was met with a patronizing response: "Listen, I know you work here, but..." Whether I work for the hospital or not is irrelevant. As a patient, I was calling with a legitimate question and expected to be treated with the same courtesy, professionalism, and respect afforded to every other patient. A simple confirmation of whether the order had been received would have been sufficient. I hope this feedback is taken constructively so that future interactions reflect the level of professionalism patients should expect from the laboratory staff. Over four days nobody cleaned the…read morepatient's room and trash was allowed to pile up, until I finally moved it outside the room where it sat in plain view of staff for hours --"not my job" they must all be thinking--so much for worrying about germs. At one point a tech arrived unscheduled to take some kind of a test. The patient had just moved from the bed to a chair to eat dinner and asked if the tech could come back in a few minutes. "Well, I'm here now" was the answer. We then we explained it would difficult for my mom to get back into bed for the test he replied , "I guess I will come back in a few days" and left. So what is the point of the test of it can be done in a few days? Also, how about some warning of the time it is planned so the patient and family can prepare and be ready? Not at HUMC. Way understaffed and apparently poorly trained. Here is some advice to the staff sitting at desks typing into terminals or looking at their phones--if you see a problem and you can fix it--do it, even if it isn't your job. A patient family member comes out and asks for help, don't say, "I'll find her nurse," ask these questions, "what is the problem? is there something I can help you with". And if you can do it, don't pass the buck. That is not how patient care is done. If you have to go to a hospital look at other options or make sure you have a friend or family member there to watch over you, otherwise you may spend half a day looking at trash in your room waiting for someone to respond to your call button for help. Run, don't walk away.
