A Heartfelt Thank You to Hackensack Hospital and the PICU Team From the moment we arrived at Hackensack Hospital, I knew we were in caring hands. What we were going through was incredibly scary and overwhelming, but the doctors, nurses, PCAs, and entire PICU team made an experience that was so frightening feel a little easier for our family. I cannot fully express how grateful I am for Dr. Ali and his entire team. The compassion, professionalism, patience, and dedication they showed us meant more than words can say. They not only cared for my child medically, but they also gave us reassurance and comfort during one of the most difficult moments of our lives. And the nurses--WOW! I want to give a very special thank-you to Claire, Thalia, Mia, and Joan. Your kindness, compassion, and the way you cared for us will never be forgotten. You made us feel heard, supported, and safe when we needed it most. I also want to recognize the PCAs, including Ari and Ktis. You welcomed us with such warmth and kindness and made us feel like we were not alone. Every little act of kindness made a difference. The PICU team was truly amazing. There are honestly no words that can fully express how thankful I am for every person who played a part in our care. Each doctor, nurse, PCA, and staff member contributed to making an incredibly difficult experience more bearable. Most importantly, I thank GOD for bringing each and every one of these individuals into our path. I prayed for strength, guidance, and healing, and I am so grateful for the people God placed around us during this journey. To everyone at Hackensack Hospital: THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. I will forever be grateful for the care, compassion, patience, and love you showed my child and our family. You didn't just take care of a patient--you took care of a family during a moment when we were scared and vulnerable. For that, I will always be thankful. May God bless every doctor, nurse, PCA, and staff member who cared for us. You are truly appreciated, and you will never be forgotten. With heartfelt gratitude, Nunnally Family read more

In 2010, Hackensack University Medical Center is where I had my fibroids removed with the, "DaVinci machine which is a robotic-assisted surgical system that is used to perform complex procedures with greater precision through small incisions. It works by giving the surgeon a magnified, 3D high-definition view of the surgical site while they control robotic arms with instruments from a console." Dr Michael Pitter (RIP) was my Doctor who performed this masterful work. The nursing staff was simply divine with their TLC, compassion and professionalism kindness towards me. I was preparing to have my Mammogram and Ultrasound done. However, I was informed by my scheduler at Columbia Doctors that I needed my images from my last mammogram (2014) with Hackensack University Medical Center. Today, nothing has changed with the remarkable, caring, positive staffers, that give TLC as their standard. A professional body of heartwarming staff at Hackensack University Medical Center. I called and requested my images. They returned the call the next day, and my images and report were ready. I drove to NJ, got my ticket stamped for free parking from the Breast Cancer Screening Center. Dropped off my images to Columbia Doctors on West 51st Street in the heart of Rockefeller Center and Radio City Music Hall (so cool). At the end of the movie, it was a joyous experience that made me feel truly gratefully happy and cared for by Hackensack University Medical Center and Columbia Doctors/NY Presbyterian Hospital. The great news is that my Mammogram and Ultrasound was negative. AMEN read more

After a grueling 10 hours in the ER hallway I was moved upstairs to a hallway bed for two days. There were ample discharges yet they still did not move me into a room. I absolutely give 5 stars to the day time nurses I had during my time in 3LW. The night shift I cannot say the same. I felt avoided and ignored entirely at night other than them waking me up for blood work and vitals roughly. For two days I dealt with nonsense and excuses just waiting for an MRI brain scan. Finally one of the APNs was able to escalate my MRI up about 8 hours earlier. I came to Hackensack because they're supposed to have an amazing triage process and broad range of care. I had seen and witnessed so many patients with non emergency issues coming to the hospital and passing me over for things they should be going to an urgent care or their normal PCP for. After 3 days I left with zero diagnosis or information about my condition. A complete waste of my time coming here. read more

We had to take our daughter HUMC Pediatric ER couple of times (2020 and 2024) in early AM hours due to high fever. Both times we were so glad to have this facility near us. The check-in process was fast. Doctors and nurses were on duty. Both times she got treated within an hour. We returned home within few hours fully relieved. The parking lot is within the campus. Free parking for patients. Valet service available as well. Security personnel are at the entrance for patient safety. read more

I found their ER ok, but I was sent to their academic practice, which I found to be severely lacking intellectual honesty & integrity. I was seen by a resident, who verbally stated that there are a couple of physical issue and "it can get serious". The resident said straight out that she was going to order labs, but B4 doing so, she "had to discuss it with her supervisor" they came in decided not do labs (so they won't see anything abnormal); and twisted objective medical issues onto pysch. Findings of more than 1 experienced specialist were also disregarded. There is no doubt that there are people in this hospital, and other hospitals too, that have medical conditions overlooked and blamed on pysch instead. (It's important for the public to know that while pysch may help a handful of patients, it can also be very damaging. This is bc baseline EEG are left out and medications often create imbalances -followed w false diagnosis, and more meds while people lose their credability, ability to self advocate, and receive proper medical care; while the patient starts to believe their is something wrong w them (aka nocebo). Meds r forced when people r not hurting themselves or others, messing with their nuerotransmittors - often while a medical condition goes undiagnosed. I am certain that their are people locked up (false imprisonment) and chemically restrained here for medical conditions undiagnosed, or caused by meds they were forced which created the issue). The academic practice at Hackensack CHOSE to PURPOSELY close their eyes to some potentially "serious"medical conditions and twist things at the expense and harm of patients! Hackensack UMC enables ab.use while being mandatory reporters! They promised to first do no harm - yet KNOWINGLY teaches residents to do the opposite. There is something deeply wrong here if a resident knows she/he has to run intellectual honesty by a supervisor. If you come, expect some sort of made up pysch diagnosis - which is often followed by meds to justify lazy care- while whats underlying medically will not be investigated. Truth will not be found here, bc it doesn't want to be seen here. Hackensack UMC academic practice, you have a legal responsibility and moral obligation to choose to do better; to put patients before legal abuse; to look for the truth vs close your eyes to the truth, to keep your promise of "first do no harm" and to encourage your residents to practice with integrity. Your resident saw the truth initially, but was encouraged to close an eye and twist things. No-one should have to run intellectual honesty by a supervisor. Your academic practice chooses to throw patients under the bus and ignore and twist severe and potentially "serious" medical conditions. This "supervisor" Bawa now sees pediatrics - and will very likely do this to children! Hackensack MC, what are you doing about this? What are you going to do for your other patients that are abused, medically neglected, and locked up? I hope you choose ethical and moral behavior. This practice is not a safe place for a patient to be, they will slowly walk you to your death. read more

I would give this hospital's ER zero stars if it were not for the kindness and attentiveness of Dr. Jeffrey, the Surgical residents and the CT technologists who cared for my partner. I brought my partner to the ER for evaluation of abdominal pain. After some testing they identified the cause, the medical team recommended that he remain overnight for observation. Because the inpatient floors were full, he had to stay in the ER throughout the night, During the night, no nurses rounded on him. The surgical team evaluated him during morning rounds and agreed that he could be discharged. Several hours passed without anyone checking on him or updating us about the discharge. I repeatedly asked to speak with his nurse and the doctor but received no meaningful response. When he was finally getting discharged, we asked whether he needed any lifting restrictions because of his injury and the physical demands of his job. Another nurse contacted the provider for clarification, and to my surprise, I overheard this red hair nurse--who was not even his primary nurse--mocking my partner's reasonable question while speaking with the provider. She then told us that the doctor did not believe restrictions were necessary. Regardless of the provider's decision, mocking a patient's legitimate concern is disrespectful and completely unprofessional. Unfortunately, our experience with some of the nursing staff was disappointing. Patients deserve regular assessments, timely communication, appropriate pain management, and respectful treatment--especially while they are sick, in pain, and depending on the staff for care. read less read more

Honestly, I would've given them a perfect score. If it wasn't for one Doctor Who on Labor Day weekend caused my mother to OD and called me to say come say goodbye at 5:30 in the morning after my mom ended up on a ventilator because of his mistake, but I will deal with that later. My mom has been going back-and-forth between Hackensack Medical Center and their cancer center. The doctors have been amazing. They communicate and treat my mom with so much compassion and are so respectful. They take the time to answer any question I can think of and a lot of the employees have given me their private cell phone numbers to reach out when I need help or have questions needed to be answered . No one wants to be in the hospital, but if you have to be in one, this is the one I would trust. I also want to give a huge applause to anyone in the front desk staff. We became close after I had to visit my mom every single day for almost 2 months they treated me like part of a family And showed me so much kindness. I will never forget them. read more

I was a patient at Hackensack and experienced a serious billing and privacy issue. I am 35 years old, yet my father was billed for part of my visit while I was billed for the other part. There is no reason my father should have received any billing related to my medical care. I called to address this, explained that this is a HIPAA violation, and was told a supervisor would call me to resolve it. Instead of contacting me, Hackensack sent another bill to my father, this time noting that payment was required to avoid collections. This demonstrates a complete lack of regard for patient privacy and basic billing accuracy. Rather than correcting the error, they escalated it in a way that could have serious consequences. The impression left is that billing takes priority over legality and patient rights. I would strongly caution others to closely monitor billing and privacy practices here. read more

This was, without question, the most deeply disappointing and disturbing experience I have ever had at a hospital in North Jersey. I'm giving one star solely due to the efforts of a few individuals who showed genuine compassion and professionalism--without them, this would be a zero. In December, I brought my fiancé to the emergency room due to heart complications and severe difficulty breathing. From the very beginning, the conduct of the staff was deeply troubling. A male nurse who initially saw my fiancé recognized his dangerously elevated heart rate and immediately noted the seriousness of the situation. However, another female nurse dismissed his condition, saying, "He's too young to have a heart attack." That kind of negligent attitude was our first red flag. After waiting an hour to be taken into triage, my fiancé--who has a documented fear of needles--expressed his anxiety. I could clearly hear the nurse outside the room mock him, saying, "Well, you have tattoos, so it's not that bad. Stop being a baby." She proceeded to draw blood without further regard, causing him to faint. She then shook him awake and held an alcohol pad under his nose. When he regained consciousness and realized I was no longer in the room, he asked repeatedly for me to be brought in. The nurse glanced at me, then silently closed the curtain in my face, while he continued struggling with heart issues and labored breathing. That was the second deeply unacceptable moment of the night. Once we were moved to a room, a group of doctors came in to assess him. He was physically unable to speak due to a swollen mouth, so I answered on his behalf. As we were talking, his heart rate suddenly spiked to 190 BPM, and a crash cart was brought in. The situation was terrifying. One staff member, Hector, stood out during this time for his calm demeanor and professionalism--he was a rare positive presence in an otherwise chaotic experience. However, the hospital lost his blood samples more than once, requiring repeated draws. When I voiced concern, another nurse responded dismissively, saying, "Well, it's not our fault we have to take more blood." It was, in fact, entirely the hospital's fault--and this level of accountability is absolutely unacceptable. To make matters worse, aside from the initial check-in and eventual discharge, we saw a doctor exactly twice over the course of seven hours. No one came in to explain the results of his bloodwork, nor was any meaningful communication provided. When he was discharged, he was given no clear diagnosis, no answers, no documentation, and yet a massive bill to follow. This hospital failed us at nearly every point of care. If you have the option, I strongly advise you to avoid Hackensack. Seek care elsewhere--somewhere where your health, concerns, and dignity will be taken seriously. This was not just poor service; it was an appalling breakdown in basic human decency and medical responsibility. read more

I was taken to HUMC in an emergency on Aug. 8. As nurse removed my cervical collar we realized that I still had my gold necklace on. It was very valuable to me because it held little figures of my 8 beloved grandchildren. and had been given to me when I survived Ovarian cancer. The nurse told me she would give it to my family in waiting room (my Sister and my Daughter. They never received said jewelry. My family reported this and nothing has been done since. I was released from hospital in a few day and sent to a nursing home for rehab of which I received about 15 minutes of. I thought at this rate I would never walk again. Few weeks later I was back in HUMC with blood clots on my lungs . In intensive care, they were great. When I was brought to my room which I had to share with another lady. I noticed there was a dog in the bed next to me. I saw it and I smelled it. The roommate indicated it was a service dog. She was up and around all day, with a young man who was strangely dressed. I know t hat doesn't indicated much but his manner of dress was rather bizarre more like a costume or something he could just throw together . I was totally incapacitated with fracture of foot and femur, but i went to sleep feeling very comfortable Woke up at 4 AM with three snoring sounds in the next bed. curtain was closed but I could tell by the smell that there was a dog sleeping in the bed next to me. I do have a picture of the man that came out of that room at 9 a.m. HUMC HAS 24 HOUR VISITING PRIVILEGES. This man came thru my space while I was sleeping. I feel I was at risk. A stranger, strangely dressed, coming to sleep not just to visit. He had a dog and a 7 or 8 foot pole with him at all times. He came in for a sleepover not just a visit. I have been traumatized. I fell asleep feeling save and secure and my well being was in jeopardy. No nurse ever came in to check. I emailed women in charge of patient relations and she never responded. That was my great experience in HUMC, Hope I never have to go back again, but will ask for a private room, if they still insist on 24 hour visiting. I have a picture of this person coming out of that room at 9 a.m. will post it privately if need be. read more

My experience on the oncology floor was genuinely remarkable, distinguished by the exceptional quality of care provided by the staff. Each interaction we had made a positive impact. My husband, who is in the end stages of pancreatic and liver cancer, was understandably anxious about entering another hospital for another bile obstruction. From the outset, Anna, our first nurse, demonstrated extraordinary kindness. She took the time to comfort my husband with warm blankets and pillows, instantly easing some of his fears. When her shift ended, we felt a sense of anxiety, but we were pleasantly surprised as Rachael stepped in, exhibiting the same warmth and friendliness. It was reassuring to see this level of consistency with each shift change. Amanda's arrival further solidified our confidence in the care we were receiving. She not only expressed genuine concern for my husband but also took the time to check in on me. Her encouragement to prioritize my own well-being was both thoughtful and empowering. The support I received from her felt like that of a compassionate friend, which was incredibly comforting during such a challenging time. I want to express my gratitude to all the staff--Lourdes, Anna, Rachael, Amanda, Antonia, Brianna, and Jose--who worked diligently to ensure our stay at Hackensack Meridian was as comfortable as possible. Their professionalism and empathy made a significant difference, creating an environment where patients and families feel supported and cared for. Lastly, I want to thank Kerry Conboy, the Nurse Manager. Kerry, you have an outstanding team of nurses who go above and beyond their duties. They deserve much more praise than I can express in this review, and I wish you all continued success. My husband, Daniel, and I sincerely thank you from the bottom of our hearts. I would like to recognize the exceptional medical staff and MSK team, particularly Erin Brady, APN, Anne Sienruckos, APN, and Dr. Ghrewati. I was truly impressed by their bedside manner. They took the time to explain all available options and encouraged our feedback. We engaged in a respectful dialogue, which was crucial given the circumstances. My rating will stay as previously posted and this update is more based on the food than care. Due to privacy I will stick to general observations. Amazing attention to patients in the W&C ward. Sadly if you have a habit of falling asleep very late at night, be warned you will be woken up daily prior to 6am. Bit overwhelming to see so many staff members throughout most of your early morning and afternoon daily. Constantly changing yet prior faces do show. Ironically, food is quite good here! lol Breakfast a bust, but lunch and dinner is, dare I say, restaurant quality?! Sometimes a good meal helps you heal and temporarily takes your mind from concentrating on your ailment. I couldn't get into the most restricted diet as it just was totally worthy of pushing away and doing without instead. Lol Once given the normal menu, go for the Tuscan chicken sandwich with a huge grilled flavorful chicken cutlet with fresh basil, tomato, fresh melted mozzarella, and a basil pesto spread on a crusty hero bread. Any shrimp dish seemed to burst with the perfect mix of flavors. The burger was quite delicious as well! Broccolini? What?! Yes please perfectly steamed! Dessert- go for the brownie. It's from David's and is huge and tasty. Granted I did not devour anything because I couldn't, but it was enough to make me realize the food was something I look forwarded to for a temporary moment of painless happiness during a real crappy moment. (Note: not every ward shares the same menu) read more

Hackensack Hospital is a dumpster fire. Their disgraceful ER has people stacked up like cordwood, well over 100% capacity, probably approaching 200%. As far as I am concerned they killed my mother when she contracted sepsis in that hell hole. Now they are working to kill my father in law. Today they promise him a rapid admission. After sitting in the ER - why he had to go through the overpacked, overcrowded, understaffed ER is still a mystery - for 7 hours, choaking on his own bile, with no breathing treatments, no food, and the one doctor we managed to find blew us off. The cancer "doctor" who promised "rapid admission" is no where to be found, doesn't answer his phone, still has not called back. And probably all the doctor had to do was pick up a phone to speed the admissions process along. And pain treatment? Well they come in with a few pills of dilauded. Lot of good that will do when the man is on a frickin feeding tube. Maybe read the chart? But what about cronic care? Seems to me the "doctors" have only one priority: covering their rears. They have delayed and rescheduled his operations until the cancer had spread too far to operate. IF the man sneezes they cancel all treatment and schedule another several weeks of tests. They wouldn't even feed the man without permission, probably in triplicate. They have repeatedly failed to call in prescriptions and called in the wrong prescriptions. The doctors have been unreachable weeks at a time. The cardiologist and the It almost feels as if they decided that Dave, my father in law, will die and they are just giving us the run around until that time comes. Hackensack Hospital has devolved into an absolute disaster. IF you are sick, for the Love of God, stay the HELL away from Hackensack Hospital. read more

The children's emergency department sucks. The intake staff is super snotty. I had to go here for mammogram. No I didn't mail anything anywhere and I wasn't given a geometrical diagram to demonstrate where my talents and energy would be best used.... I had to squeeze my boob in scientific panini machine to take a picture! (The perks of aging). I parked in the garage and they validate parking so don't worry about paying. I spoke with a financial advisor prior to testing who reviewed my plan with me and discussed what my out of pocket cost may be which I really appreciate because no one likes a surprise bill. The facility is modern and beautiful and everyone was extremely nice. What I like most about getting this screening done at this facility is that if they see anything, they same something: moreover they get to the bottom of it on the same day because they have all the equipment and the staff to do so. This is great because it saves you from sleepless nights and self diagnosing from the internet. Which, good people of Yelp, is always a BAD idea because you end up diagnosing yourself with some crazy disease that only like 50,000 ever got! I will always go to this facility if I remain a resident in the tristate area because of their transparency, compassion and professionalism with such delicate situations. One less thing to feel anxious about. I recommend this facility for breast screening hands down! read more

I was there last week for major surgery. Surgery performed at around 7:30 am (amazing dr). Brought up to my room around 11 am and it all went downhill from there. My nurse - not too sure if it was her first day on the job but she was really awful. I had the option to spend the night there - dr came up at 5 and told me if I was up to it I could leave. Told my nurse - she said she didn't get my discharge papers yet. Ok At 7 pm I ask again only to be told "sorry my shift is over" Then she changes her tune a bit and tries to rush me out. Goes over discharge papers in the dark (they couldn't find the veins of the woman in the other bed and had the lights off with a flashlight) she then pull out my iV - blood squirting all over - I then ask about any prescription for pain meds - she replies Nope none left so just take Tylenol. THEN she says " you don't need a wheelchair do you?" and points me to the elevator. I only gave 3 stars because the nurses, nurse's aides, and physical therapy staff are absolutely wonderful. They actually deserve 5 stars, but the hospital is ridiculous and deserves 1 star. First, there are NOT ENOUGH handicap parking spots in any of their parking garages. For example, the garage near the helena theurer pavilion has about 15 handicap spots. For that entire large parking garage. I don't know why they didn't add more, it's probably too expensive for them so they don't want to be bothered. People who need handicap spots cannot find one and have to park where ever they can find an empty spot. That's not right for the elderly or disabled. Next, when my relative was admitted there last week there was a day where their entire phone system for the dietary dept went down. No patient was able to order any breakfast/lunch. Things happen and systems go down, but a HOSPITAL should have some type of backup plan for things like this. They brought my diabetic relative a house breakfast (since no one could call and order anything for hours and hours) which had one (!!) piece of french toast and syrup with milk. People are admitted because they're sick and need to get better, they need proper nutrition too. Finally, the doctors do not communicate with each other at all. One doctor told the relative that he would be discharged on Wednesday. Then another came in and said it'll be Thursday, once he shows he can walk a certain distance. Once he walked the distance they wanted, then another doctor said it'll be Friday, once they get home care set up. They could not figure out how to reach anyone at his insurance, so they had him call the insurance company and home care agency on 3 way call (with his own phone!) and verify his benefits. I have never heard of the patient having to do this task. You're supposed to be there getting better, not doing phone calls that they should be able to handle. Why are they adding tasks/extra stress on the patient? When Friday comes, another doctor says he still cannot be discharged and it'll be sometime the next week. At that point, he said he's going to sign himself out because he's tired of this nonsense they're doing. BTW, if you have commercial insurance, there are benefit$$ for the hospital to delay your discharge for as long as possible, until the insurance finally says they won't pay anymore. They also made up pain levels for him. He always reports pain level between 6-8. They had it as 3 one day, then 0, then 10. I don't know why they were doing that. If you have any preplanned or elective procedure, I would not recommend HUMC. I would only recommend them if it's an emergency and that's the closest hospital. read more

The billing department at this hospital engages in unethical practices. Despite having a payment plan set up with the billing department and making regular and timely payments, they sold debt to a collection agency without any forewarning or notice of such. For a hospital I count on for my healthcare, it's extremely disturbing they would engage in such poor conduct and actively try to negatively impact their patients. read more
