Brian at Heal Hop is teaching the theory of flow & meditation using rowing & music…read more The rowing focuses on balancing the body & calming the mind. You must pull & push with equal force for the rowing to become easy or 'effortless'. Brian is teaching how the body gets into 'flow'. When in flow, the rowers mind becomes calm & is open to accept & process new ideas & theories. This is where meditation begins. Brian explains concepts of mindfulness in ways that are understandable & relatable for anyone open to learn. His approach is kind, as you never feel like he is judging you or talking down to you. These traits are essential to why his process is successful. My journey with Heal Hop & Brian has been life saving. I came to Brian after experiencing trauma. I had seen several 'traditional' therapist & got little to no healing, & lots of medication prescribed. A lifetime of prescriptions & no relief from the core issue was not what I wanted. I reached out to Brian with no meditation experience & no rowing experience. I just wanted to process the trauma & feel better. Brian is helping with both those needs, & many, many more added benefits I had never even considered. The benefits of 8 classes, so far, are immeasurable. Every part of my life has been positively touched by what Brian is teaching me. My wish is everyone on the planet would experience what Brian is teaching, & that starts here in Arizona.

Brian is a great teacher and is knowledgeable in many fitness areas. Each class can be much more than just rowing. My workout mix has included Qigong, ski and bike machines, and boxing. Always a heavy emphasis on stretching pre and post workout! Brian also tracks your progress so you can see how far you've come.

Having studied under Buddhist monks in Nepal and being involved in contemplative practices for over…read morea decade, it only took one session of observing her behavior and listening to her expansion of the dharma to never come back. The combination of unceasing negative affect and an elementary capability of expanding on the dharma was humorous to observe, although a waste of an evening. Jane gets it right: "Genevieve was very negative towards many of the participants. She would regularly cut them off, say they were doing (some negative meditation term - ones I didn't understand until I started learning after quitting the class). She would ask a question or someone would want to share something and she just shot them down. Half the class never talked and by the time I left the entire class just stopped asking questions or bringing up something, instead just trying to give Genevieve the answers she wanted instead of really discussing what was going on." If you really have no other options and can endure her misbehavior, I suppose that would be fine. If you've been in contemplative spaces long enough, figures like Genevieve are not uncommon, even if an unfortunate symptom of the subculture. If anything you should pity her, as her life's work is a vanity project of a deeply incompetent, seemingly troubled person. Oh, well.

I haven't been at Bodi since the beginning but I have been a member for over 5 years and I definitely love that place! There are multiple options of classes that incorporate strength and cardio, yoga, heated mat Pilates and boxing (now Hyrox based class and straight lifting classes). They have expanded to 3 studios to offer all those classes, which is amazing! There's always a variety of exercises to hit the main muscles groups and the accessory muscle groups. The recovery room is super convenient to use after a class or on a rest day. Variety of class times to meet a large range of schedules. They truly value their members and community and are constantly finding ways to benefit the members even more. It can always be a little intimidating trying a new gym or class but I think they do a great job at trying to make everyone feel welcome & it's generally easy to follow along if feeling lost during a workout. The coaches bring so much energy & fun to the classes as well. Bodi is very affordable in comparison to other gyms (especially if you catch one of their sales around holidays). Class pass is another great way to experience some bodi classes. Definitely worth it to try at least once!!

I also love the layout of the gym it's clean, well spaced out, and the equipment is great. My only con so far is that, in my experience, the trainers haven't been very engaged with the class or offered much guidance on form. One of the things I love most about group fitness is when instructors hype up the room & shouting out members, offering motivation, or demoing the moves alongside the class instead of just in the beginning and I haven't really seen that yet. That said, the staff are all super friendly, the gym offers so much more than just strength training (which I'm excited to explore), and the playlists are a solid 10/10. If you're in Scottsdale or just want to try a new gym I highly recommend this one!
