This district knows how to teach! The schools are safe and well maintained by the operations staff. When I go by campuses now, I see HVAC workers on the roofs and custodians cleaning classrooms in preparation for the school year. It's good to know that there are people actively workin g behind the scenes to help facilitate the safety of our children.

San Juan Unified's interest is money and not the students. They are desperate because their…read moreenrollment is low and students are leaving the district. The district hires and retains inexperienced, rude, unmotivated, privileged teachers set in their ways, racist staff, and have discriminatory practices. I am a parent of 4 students who attended schools in the district since 2008 and it has only gotten worse. My youngest is at Rio Americano and the culture is toxic and dysfunctional. His counselor Sydnee Butcher needs training and support as an academic guidance counselor. Doesn't surprise me being trained by Elizabeth Irwin. When Sydnee first appeared last year, she was very vocal about change and supporting students. She stated she once was a student there and her experience there allowed her to identify areas of improvement. My experience with her is that is far from the truth. Sydnee doesn't perform any research nor does she fact check. She just blindly regurgitates what Elizabeth feeds her. My son is in a unique position and has aspirations for which he has set goals. While trying to reach those goals, Sydnee and Elizabeth have only worked to hold him back with hard stops. They are not helpful at all. You would think your academic guidance counselor wants students to succeed and instead of delivering hard stops, they will use their discretion (they have levels of discretion) to find ways and create opportunities to support students success. If you are able to get your children into a different district. Please do so. You will not regret it. If you are not able, please listen to your children, the teachers and staff lack integrity.

We noted that their alternate language training was to provide them with a Rosetta Stone account and...well that was it. No follow up or guaranteed exposure in class. Then they moved to the new campus ...and OMG We would here 'Mrs Kim's' voice mails every night on the phone "Good evening Carmichael Parents...I am the good fairy princess..". They have reorganized their parking loops and traffic flows 8-10 times in the time that we have been there. They even began controlling the way you exit the parking lot...yes redirecting traffic on public roads. The administrators cordened off all parking spots for themselves...forcing parents to park a block away if they want to walk there younger child in. They even started making the kids wait in the cold, out in the breezeways until 10 minutes prior to class so that their 'facilitators' had preparation time. Yes...facilitators...not teachers. My daughter was one of 30+ kids in a single class from three different grades, and not one was on the same lesson. The one teacher never had one on one time with her, and very little time to speak to even her grade as a whole. Essentially, the way they have organized it there, is that your kid is in a correspondence course, and with a bit of luck they get a visit from a teacher. They say it works for some.

On our daughters very first day of school, her teachers, Ms. Serena and Ms. Malih were so caring and thoughtful with her. She was nervous to be there and didn't want us to leave in the morning. Ms. Serena took her by the hand and spoke gently with her, and made her feel more comfortable. We knew we were leaving our daughter in good hands that morning, and the positive experiences continued on until our last day of school. The office staff is very friendly, and always makes me feel as if I'm part of the MCS family when I talk to them on the phone, or see them in person in the office. Whenever I stop by the office with my daughter, Ms. Galina goes out of her way to say hi to her and often gives her a warm hug and sometimes a sticker =) I would highly recommend Montessori Childrens School to my anyone I know that I is looking for a wonderful, caring place for the children to go to school / daycare, or anyone that plans to continue with the Montessori teaching philosophy.

I can not speak about morning traffic because we are there early before traffic starts to develop. Everyone has been very friendly and helpful. They have a class dojo for the class/ school that updates you with important information. I really appreciate that. I was able to ask the teacher about early dismissal for parent conference day and I clarified it was all week. This information would've been nice the week before. Finding alternative transportation is very important and to rearrange the schedules. They had a great resource for the parents and community. Face mobile provides food and diapers and technology information free WiFi tons and tons of information and resources. it sounds like a catch all it is mobile and at different locations. One thing I have noticed the payment is not updated. Paying cash is sometimes not convenient and the school will lose profit. We went to the book fair and the scholastic register was having trouble. I brought cash because of the past experiences but others were having trouble and the line was very long and the wait was at least 30 minutes. I don't know if some people walked out because they couldn't wait and they were directly to the site. Having a square to have the transactions accountable I'm sure they could figure something that was more effective. The employee seemed frazzled under the pressure. Another person to help with the transactions would've been very helpful. We at our first trimester of the school and we are happy. I have open communication with our teacher. And it's made the experience great.

My step-son is brilliant but undisciplined and he was allowed to "graduate" sixth grade without doing any work at all and only getting "1's" and "2's" his whole career there. My oldest step-child would've succeeded anywhere anyhow and still does..... My fifth grade daughter has had much the same experience as my son until this year. This year I've been heavily involved and her teacher is very communicative and the difference has been huge. The school goes on wonderful field trips in every grade. The music program is awesome, my daughter has class for 30min 3x's/week and is learning quickly. The office staff are typically rude. The parking lot ( pickup / drop off ) is well managed and there is a great focus on child safety and using crosswalks. There's also a crossing guard and a " lighted?" Crosswalk just for school goers. P.E. is not a large focus but I believe funding is gone for health at most elementry schools. The children do have a large field, two playgrounds, ball courts, basketball courts and a basebal / kickball backstop. The surrounding area is typical for the city except that there is an outpatient psychiatric facility about 1 mile up mission avenue. There are people often in the area that " act weird " but I've heard of nothing harmful from them. I would rather my daughter been in a different school for all previous years but I am happy with her, her teacher and myself right. I wouldn't choose to enroll another child in this school but I'm alright with my daughter finishing out this year there.
