Maine is lucky to have several drive-ins. It's really all a matter of preference and geography (and maybe what movies are being offered; sometimes Saco really comes out with an impressive line-up!). But, I'll echo what a couple other folks have said already: PRO: $20 for a double feature for a whole carload of people is unbeatable! CON: We were in a Honda HRV (not a huge SUV) and tried to park in the third row where other vehicles our size were parked. A man came (literally) running after us to tell us we needed to move back a row because we were "too big." The fourth row was almost exclusively enormous pickup trucks. Fortunately, the ground in the fourth row had a bit of a bump, so we were able to position our vehicle on an incline and it offered fantastic views of the screen. Also, people weren't parking near the outdated microphone stands (which are spaced out for a reason), and instead we had someone park (their mega truck) so close to us that we couldn't even open our passenger door. Tried to park my small Toyota RAV4 (hatchback) in the 3rd row. Was told I needed to move my vehicle back one row yet there are multiple hatchbacks in the first, second and third row......my kids can't see the screen from where we are parked but we're not allowed to move up ONE row. So you pay for tickets and aren't allowed to park where you want? I could understand if I had a lifted truck but a small hatchback? will stick to prides corner in Westbrook from now on. Update a vehicle the same exact size as mine parked right in front of me and opened their trunk. Nothing was said to them. Bouncy house for kids! This place is still cool after all these years and they won a new projector last year. The snack bar is still old school and the line can get backed up. There is ample parking and I love how people pop seats out of cars or bring lawn chairs with them. This is a very friendly place and good for families. Liked this spot, but didn't love it. Of all the drive-ins I've had the good fortune of visiting this ranks lowest, but hey, it's an operating drive-in so there's that. The cash register girl gave me the wrong change twice when I bought the special which was a couple of hot dogs and a drink, service and price otherwise good. This place is awesome! They charge by the carload. Even with only 2 people its still cheaper than all the drive-ins in my area, nevermind the prices regal charges. The screen is big and the picture is great. And they reserve the first three rows for cars only, so everyone can see! Make sure you support this place so they are around for a long time. My first memory of going to the drive-in was when I saw "A Hard Days Night" with my sisters and parents all piled into the car. Being the youngest, I got to stand on the "hump" on the floor of the back seat so that I could see the screen. I remember I would wear my PJs so that if I fell asleep, I could be carried to bed once we got home. As teens, my friends and I would go to the drive-in to see Cheech and Chong movies and horror flicks. Great times. Now my wife and I go to see whatever sounds worth seeing. The drive-in experience is a retro thing that a normal movie theater can't compare with. The whole experience is wonderful fun! The Saco drive-in is a great place to go and should be on everyone's list. I applaud the guys who are now running the business and wish them great success. read more

I went for the first time this weekend, and it was a fun experience. I wasn't totally prepared for the drive-in, so we didn't bring chairs or anything like many others did, so we sat in the car. GREAT experience!!! A drive-in theater. WOW I did not know that these exist anymore. It's a personal movie experience within a space filled with many other movie goers. We brought our own snacks (but there is a snack bar available), the fee was a mere $20.00 total for (4) people. This fee includes admission to (2) current (up to date) movies. Also, a good public restroom is hard to come by BUT Saco Drive-in restrooms were spotless & clean. I even allowed my 7 year old to use this restroom, that says a lot about the cleanliness. I've been coming to Maine my entire life & now live here & last nite was the first time I went to the drive-in. We saw IT. Does not get better than seeing Steven King's IT in Maine at a drive-in! It was fabulous. I can't speak for the bathrooms or snack bar as I did not use either but the movie experience was great. If I do go back I'd bring my own snacks so I don't have to deal with the snack bar. People sit outside their cars w/ snacks, sandwiches, meals, you name it. I have been going to the Saco Drive-In Theatre since I was 5. It's a great place to bring the family OR a date. All ages are welcomed and the snack bar isn't the greatest but it gets you through the movie. I love it but i'm not sure you all will. I defiently would recommend going there. Wow allot has changed since last year, first off the drive in is just about open for the new year/summer. While everything was clean in the area the picture was sort of darker then what I remember it to be. Now lets move onto the snack bar, the food selection was lower then the previous year. The hot dogs and burgers look unappealing more like cafeteria burgers and hot dogs, they looked bleh. The hot dog with is the one I got with a side of fries. Was bland and unappealing they only had ketchup and mustard, wheres the other condiments! The fries where the better part defiantly better then the crinkle fries though I do miss the cheese fries they had. The served our buttered popcorn in a paper Bag! who friggin does that in a tourest/profesonal environment, sure at a church you can get away with it. But this is a theater you need proper pop corn bags! Ill probably be sticking to the actual theater and there over priced snack. I love the drive-in! LOVE IT! Watching movies outside at night in the summer is one of the most fantastic things. And the Saco Drive-In Theatre is pretty sweet. It's cheap ($15 for 3 people or $20 for 4 or more -- that's for TWO movies!). People are generally courteous. There are snacks. The bathrooms are clean. And even if you don't have your own car radio, they have little speakers for the sound, as well. Here is how to drive-in at the Saco Drive-In Theatre: 1. Bring snacks. And bug spray. 2. If you are an adult, bring booze. But don't be a jerk about it and act like a drunken idiot. 3. Bring a blanket. And camp chairs. 4. Bring your dog. Dogs like movies, too. You could also take your kids but I think that dogs are better. So leave your kids at home and take the dogs. 5. Arrive in plenty of time to get a good spot. If the gate is at 7:30, arrive at 7:45. Everyone who came at 7:30 will be through the gate but you'll still get a good spot. 6. If you drive an SUV, back in to your spot and sit in the back with the door open. This provides you a nice vantage point and protects you from rain. Also you can lay down if you get tired. If you drive a car, camp chairs are handy. Or you can lay on the hood. With your blankets and your dog and your snacks and booze. 7. Turn your ignition to "ACC" to run your radio. Don't turn it to "ON" unless you want a jump at the end of the night. There is usually someone there who will give you a jump, though. 8. Go to the snack bar after the movie starts but before anything good starts to happen. There is always a crazy stupid line before the first movie. The snack bar closes shortly after the second movie starts. 9. Go to the bathroom before the first movie ends or after the second movie starts. Trust me, DO NOT go to the bathroom between movies. 10. Don't turn your lights on if the movie is still going. Likewise, do not set off your alarm. Everyone will be justified in their hatred of you. Bonus - A lot of people leave after the first movie so you can move your car closer if you didn't get a good spot at the start. read more

We went to the Saco drive in during our recent vacation to Old Orchard Beach. It's only $15 a car and you get two movies! It's a cute little place, and I heard you can even bring your well behaved dog!! If you have daytime running lights on your car (like we do) a nice little trick to know is: put your emergency break on before starting your car. This will override the lights and they won't come on while you are enjoying the movie :). I wish we had known this in the past!! read more

The three college juniors that ran the place this year did a poor job compared to the people who ran it before them. The grass was not cut and the shrubs were grown up onto the screen & got in the way of the picture. Also, the washrooms were dirty & smelly. The times I went, there were no paper towels. Also the snack bar only had a few selections. Not very good. They served buttered popcorn in a brown paper bag. I got butter on my clothes because it was not in a regular movie theater cup. These guys strike me a being greedy & cheap. The films I saw looked defective or something, so I talked to the camera man there, who was very nice. He said the bulb in the projector was old and they weren't getting a new one. One of the movies I saw was R rated and had nudity in it, but they still let cars come in that had young kids, which was very inappropriate! Could barely see the movie because the screen was so dark. The snack bar is a joke. The line takes forever and the system they have in place ensures that you will miss half the movie just waiting to get a bag of popcorn. I grew up with one of my 1st movie experience at the drive-in. The "Duncan yoyo" experts came to the movie theatre, and root beer floats were at A&W, with outdoor delivery. In high school, we would smuggle in a friend in the trunk, because we had no money. There was a great adventure to walk to the snack bar in the dark, and count the change to see how you could maximize your food. It was a social event where you made new friends, and checked out the girls. We never left with the same people in the car. The grandparent and parents today are re-introducing the kids to the drive-in experience because 3 young college students want to keep this great tradition going, and perhaps make it better. My money is that they will if those of us who loved the experience, start going again with our families and tell the kids our stories...Well..not all of them..Johnny Mathias ring a bell. AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember going to the drive-in when I was a child and remembered loving it throughout high school and again in college. Since I moved to the city-there are no drive ins and I sadly miss them. Three adults saw Kung Fo Panda and Indiana Jones for $17 and we were able to smuggle in any refreshments that we wanted to bring with us-did I mention that we brought our baby with us?? Holy Ghetto REDNECK!! We went this evening to see Fast and Furious 7. Before the movie we went to use that bathroom, I was amazed by the amount of camo that you can jam in to a place like that. It was like all the redneck boys were taking their sisters out for a date. There was a pleather of inbreeding that was going to take place that night after the lights went out. The men's room....yuck.....there is a large pee troth...barf...and the place smelled like straight dirty dick. The movie was good till about 20 min before the end when the screen went blank, they later restarted it but it was much further ahead than where we left off causing it to be rewound and we already basically saw the end... Very little appears to have been put back into this drive over the years. Of the half dozen drive ins I have been to this is probably the most run down. The movie selection isn't great and the management is rude and un-predictable. Even after people in the area showed a tremendous amount of support to help them go digital management is ruder than ever. Oh we started the movie early and didn't tell you before selling you the ticket? Too bad thats your problem no discount no upfront the movie is 1/4 over before taking your money.... If there was any other drive in within an extra ten minutes than this place I would go there. read more

Only thing I would change would b wanting fresh popcorn. You could tell the popcorn we had was sitting out a while but I guess that's par for the course for every theater these days. Listen. I completely respect and understand the change in policy because of Covid-19. But tonight (August 13) I took my cousins and sister to go see spongebob. As we first arrived, we parked in the second row with a Subaru hatchback. And the man in the red shirt directing parking nicely asked us to move back. We packed up our things and respectfully moved back to the sixth row as asked. Once we arrived, we unloaded the car, got situated, ate dinner, and played pass with a football. During this time which was about 45 minutes, the man watched us and saw where we were parked and how long we were there for. Once more cars arrived, he approached us again and rudely told us to move back one more row. Keep in mind, there are many pick up trucks taller than my car in the third and fifth rows right in front of us. As I'd usually respect policy and move back, we had already been at this spot for almost an hour and never got told to move. This man saw where we parked and waited until there was limited space to ask us to move. When I politely said "I just wish you had asked us to move sooner" he was rude in response. "You made the policy look stupid" he said to us. I'm very disappointed as I've come to the drive in for as long as I can remember. This was a negative experience for my whole family and I sincerely hope it doesn't happen again. read more

waited in line for almost an hour, and then the place was filling up. the problem I have with this is that everybody was cutting in. went up to talk to the guy and he said he didn't care because he's a business owner. so basically, don't wait, just fight your way in. who cares about everybody else. and if you have an issue, don't try to talk to the guy up front, he'll just tell you he doesn't care, and you don't know how to ruin a business. part of the issue is that they're taking credit card payments on an ipad, taking up to 3 minutes per transaction. another problem is only one guy is taking money. there should be two lines. if somebody would start taking money an hour before and place a ticket on each windshield, getting in would be smoother and people cutting in could just pull off to the side. second, I can understand why they must accept credit cards but that slows everything down. everybody in line was getting frustrated, people were leaving. the excuse he used for letting people cut is that the: police want people off the street faster. all it does is cause ongoing back up. it doesn't solve anything. further more, for somebody who knows so much about running a business, then why be so aggressive and rude? I left and happily went over to Prides corner, and a worker there told me he has had several people come over recently saying there were fights in line, people fed up in general, and other dissatisfied patrons. good luck with that attitude, doesn't seem to get you very far! read more

My family and I went to the Saco drive in for the first time is past Saturday. We had a great time for the most part. The biggest issue was people with no manners. The people in front of us kept opening the hatch of their car all night and they took up three spots. They didn't move until someone almost got in a fight with them. We went to see TMNT and Guardians of he Galaxy. I want impressed with either movie and we left about 30 minutes into the second movie. Mostly because we were tired and had a long drive. There are some improvements to be made. The snack bar was sooooo slow. I was told an hour, yes an hour for fried dough!!! I canceled my order because I wanted to actually see the movies I paid to see. They served a limited amount of beer and wine. Very expensive, $6.50ish for a small glass of wine. I know that is how they make profit so I was willing to pay. Still a steep price for a glass of wine that costs about the same price as the whole bottle! The biggest issue was that the bounce house they have costs $5 for 4 minutes or $7 for unlimited time. I thought it would be free. I saw countless people disappoint their kids because they couldn't afford it, especially people that had multiple children. Overall, we will go back. It's nice to give our son a chance to experience simple, old school pleasures that don't require a wi-if connection. read more
